Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD), characterized by profound regression in language, skills, and self-regulation after a period of normal development, was subsumed into the autism spectrum in DSM-5, effectively erasing it as a distinct diagnostic category and halting research into this condition's unique characteristics and treatment needs.

ErasureAdded:
At 4 and 1/2, he stopped talking, and he started hurting himself. He lost himself. And he was terrified. That's not a shade on the spectrum that's equal to all others. That's childhood disintegrative disorder, and the DSM erased it. It was subsumed into the autism spectrum, and everyone's moved on. So, now nobody knows it exists.
Nobody's researching it, and the kids like my son who can't advocate for themselves are left with a diagnosis that doesn't tell the whole story. And we're told to just accept that research isn't even being conducted for late age regression now because it's no longer distinct in the diagnostic manual.
Acceptance without awareness isn't acceptance. It's erasure.
