I'm going to drive that car into the earth's crust, and I'm going to sleep good, cuz who going to check me, boo? Because looking rich and being stable are not always the same thing. Some people got extra luxury purses and extra panic attacks, too. A luxury apartment and overdraft notifications. A fridge full of sparkling water and absolutely no emergency funds popping in all the wrong ways. And listen, I'm not saying don't enjoy your life. I enjoy a little luxury moment from time to time, just like the next moisturized woman. But somewhere along the line, people started confusing consumption with success. And as a licensed psychologist, though, I got thoughts. Now, if you're new here, hey y'all. I'm Dr. Nina, licensed psychologist, full professor, wife, and mama. Baby, I'm also a professional overthinker. And apparently, I was the friend back in the day that would take you to Ross, give you $10, and I'll show you how to ball. Because a lot of people are not spending to enjoy life. They're spending to soo themselves, to prove themselves, to perform a version of success that they hope nobody questions.

[00:01:00]Meanwhile, some of the wealthiest people that I've met, even in academia, multi-millionaires, tenured, published, powerful, verifiable degrees. And some of them were walking around with the same old tide new balances from the Bush administration.

[00:01:14]And they did not care. Why? Because people with real security, they often don't need to audition financially for strangers. Now, let me be clear though.

[00:01:23]We're not about to cosplay struggle over here. This is about freedom, peace, options, and building a life that actually feels good off camera, too.

[00:01:30]Because I watched my mama start out raising me with just $15,000 a year.

[00:01:34]Facts. And somehow, we still had joy. We still had dignity. We still had peace.

[00:01:38]And baby, I never felt poor. In fact, people would report I was the apple of my mother's eye and very spoiled. And even now, I've intentionally lived below my means in my adult life. Thank you, mama. That's a part of how I survived academia, even public service. I got my student loans forgiven and I've built a life that actually lets me breathe. I owe barely nobody nothing. I don't I don't like to. Okay, baby. I like my bags and I like to keep them. So, today we're getting into what I call my poor me confessions, the habits, the mindset shifts, the system, and the reasons I intentionally stopped trying to look rich so I could actually build a rich life. And I'm doing that for my baby, too. Okay, Hunter needs to ball out. [00:02:46]Poor me. Confession one. Looking rich is a full-time bill. Now, the first thing I had to realize is that looking rich, baby, that's a subscription service. And some of us stay enrolled on the platinum package. And y'all know they always taking the cost up inflation because one expensive thing usually comes with seven emotional support purchases attached to it. You buy the designer shoes. Now suddenly that bag feels dusty. Now your coat feels tied. Your nails need to match. You need a soft life brunch. You need the aesthetic living in the apartment. And you need the luxury gym membership because apparently treadmills need a social class now. And before you know it, your life is an entire giant maintenance bill. That's why some people look expensive. But they're one inconvenience away from a collapse. And psychologically, this makes sense because once people attach their identity to looking successful, every downgrade feels like a threat to their self-esteem. And that's why lifestyle inflation is sneaky. It doesn't happen all at once. It happens little by little. You get a raise, so now you deserve a nicer car, then a nicer apartment, better furniture, premium groceries, wardrobe upgrades, luxury skincare, and 12 streaming services you forgot you even have. Go check that bill. Mhm. Meanwhile, your paycheck went up, but your piece didn't. And one thing about me, I learned early that I wanted my life to feel good instead of just looking expensive because I've met people with all the luxury things and a lot of stress hives, too. And I told you I'm not anti- nice things, but I am anti- financial cosplay. There's a difference. I believe in having a signature style. I believe in quality. I even believe in looking polished and put together. Y'all know that. But I also believe in not turning your life into a never-ending invoice. And this is why I tell people all the time, stop buying the lifestyle you have to financially recover from every month. that part because if your entire life depends on keeping up appearances, your nervous system never gets to rest. And practical tip, this changed my whole relationship with money. Pick one or two categories where you genuinely care. Maybe it's handbags, maybe it's fragrance, maybe it's skincare, or maybe it's travel.

[00:04:38]Cool. But everything does not need to be luxury at the same dang time. And another thing, repeat your looks. Mix, match, remix, do whatever. Wear it again. Rich women repeat coats. Stable women repeat handbags. Grown women buy things that survive multiple seasons.

The real flex is low monthly expenses. Now, this is the confession that changed me forever. The sexiest thing in this dusty economy is options. Not a $900 candle collection. options. The ability to leave a toxic job, the ability to rest or pivot, the ability to survive an emergency without your eyes twitching.

[00:05:28]Y'all know what I'm talking about. Don't act brand new. That's luxury to me.

[00:05:31]Because one thing people don't talk about is how expensive lifestyles actually trap people. That big car note, now you can't slow down. My car been paid off for 6 years, I think, y'all. 6 years. That tell you how old my car is.

[00:05:44]I I don't care. It It works. It looks good. Every time I go in, it has good diagnostics. Whatever. Who going to check me? Boo. Like I said, and the difference is I can afford a new one.

[00:05:54]But do I need it? Mm- You know, you go get a luxury apartment, now you can't take career risks. That constant spending habit now every paycheck already has assignments before you even get it. As a licensed psychologist, I noticed that some people don't even realize just how much chronic anxiety is attached to overextension. The entire nervous system is surviving their bills.

[00:06:13]And I've been there in smaller ways. And that's why I've been intentionally building my life differently. Even as my income increased, I did not upgrade every part of my life because I've watched too many people make more money while somehow becoming broker emotionally and financially. But literally, I've worked around people with real money, very powerful people.

[00:06:31]And the things that they had, even if they weren't the best, there was no shame, there was no performance, and there was no panic. So, a mantra that I keep and I try to say, I don't care about looking rich. I care about being hard to shake. That's the goal. I want breathing room. I want margin. I want to be able to say, "Nope, I'm not doing that without my lights blinking in Morris code." In a practical grown woman tip, even in a drought like right now, lower your recurring expenses first.

[00:06:54]That's where your expenses live. Not the occasional treat, the recurring bills, because recurring expenses are sneaky little kidnappers, high car payments, subscriptions, luxury memberships, buy now pay later, CLA, y'all are corner it up. I sound like the old folk. storage units full of forgotten decisions, daily delivery habits, and constant upgrades.

[00:07:14]That stuff quietly steals your flexibility, and flexibility is actually peace. Even in a horrible and tough economy, I would rather drive my little reliable car straight on down into the earth's crust than try to impress people that it's not going to help me pay for the transmission anyway. And I know somebody in the bag needed permission to hear that. Poor me. Confession number three, my mama made 15K look like peace, so I never give myself excuses. So, I tell y'all a lot of my money mindset started with my mother and she watches my videos. So, hey mama. Because I watched her raise me intentionally and my sister and with me. She started out making only 15,000 a year. And when I say we never felt poor, baby, I always felt like I was given to. I had all kinds of experiences. I was classically trained in piano, played in the orchestra, viola, violin, and cello. I also sang, was in a drill team, did debutants. I mean, I didn't not do a whole lot and we didn't have endless luxury. That was okay. But we had cleanliness. We had structure. We had love, dignity, laughter. We had some Jesus, okay? Music playing in the house, meals together, and we had peace. And I think when I think back to that, it changed my relationship with money forever. Because now as an adult, I know that richness and consumption are just not the same. Some people have expensive lives and miserable homes. And my mother taught me without even trying that emotional safety is much better every day, much better than a performance.

[00:08:36]That's why now I try not to confuse peace with aesthetics. Because social media have you believe in a whole lot.

[00:08:42]Like if your pantry doesn't look like a Container Store sponsorship, if your bathroom doesn't look like a spa in Bali, if your Sunday reset routine doesn't consist of 17 matching jars. At some point, you're just failing.

[00:08:52]Meanwhile, you're trying to keep up and your nervous system is getting fried along the way. And no lie, y'all can ask some of the people I went to grad school with. I used to say, "Give me $10. I'll take you to Ross and show you how to ball. I'll have you looking employed, moisturized, and emotionally stable by lunchtime." [00:09:12]Some of y'all be acting like y'all scared to talk to me. I really do what I talk about. I'll be in Burlington. Okay, check my basket. Because style is not about constant consumption. A lot of times it's creativity and confidence, restraint, and even knowing yourself.

[00:09:26]And a practical tip, build rituals instead of dependencies. That changed everything for me. Candles, music, clean sheets, a good meal at home, fresh hair, a long shower, walking outside, coffee in your favorite mug. Baby piece has a texture and it doesn't always require a credit card swipe. Poor me. Confession number four. The girls are going broke trying to look soft. Now, let's go ahead and talk about it because some of the girls are not living a soft life.

[00:09:53]Oo, t-shirt time. And there is a difference. And don't get me wrong, I love femininity, beauty, and self-care.

[00:09:59]Y'all see it all the time. I love smelling edible, being moisturized, and emotionally unavailable to nonsense. But somewhere along the line, self-care stopped meaning care, and it started meaning constant consumption. Every week, there's a new mustave, holy grail, life-changing. You need this product.

[00:10:15]Oh, and the algorithm, it definitely knows how to trigger that emotional spending, especially for women because modern marketing has figured out if they can make women feel behind, undesirable, lazy, undisiplined, or not feminine enough, baby, they can sell you anything. Okay?

[00:10:46]Meanwhile, your savings account is fighting for its life. And psychologically, that's important because emotional spending usually gives us temporary relief, temporary control, and dopamine. But temporary dopamine is expensive as heck, especially when you're stressed, lonely, and overwhelmed. When you're burned out, or trying to reinvent yourself every three business days. And I ain't judging you because I've absolutely had moments where online shopping was emotionally healing me in my opinion. But now I really slow down before I buy things.

[00:11:12]And one system that has really helped me is that 72-hour rule. If I see something online and I feel like, "Oh my god, I need this." Baby, I wait 72 hours. No questions. Because half the time I didn't need the item, I needed stimulation, distraction, comfort, or even just a nap. And another grown woman rule, stop trying to become someone new every season. You don't need to refresh your identity every quarter. And you don't need a new aesthetic every time the internet discovers beige like it's a new color. Sometimes peace is just consistency. And honestly, the softest life I've created for myself is not an expensive one. It's the one where I stop panicking financially every month. I mean, if y'all can't tell, I've done a lot of life reflections and I've had to think back to times that I've spent money on things and people and time on things that I don't even like. And a lot of people do it. random people online, old classmates, women people are secretly competing with, and men whose opinion should never be near the thermostat of your self-esteem. And social media has made this bad. It has dragged us because now people feel the pressure to debut themselves constantly.

[00:14:04]New outfit, new hall, aesthetic, new identity, new face, new place, and new luxury purchases. At this point, some people are treating life like a rebrand every 6 weeks. And this gets expensive.

[00:14:15]Don't get it twisted. I love fashion. I love beauty. and I love a good look. But back in the day, I had to learn the difference between being stylish and financially performing because those two ain't the same. And one thing I've noticed around genuinely secure women, especially my good friends, they repeat their stuff unapologetically. Same coat, same watch, same handbags, same signature perfumes, and a very clean, polished energy. Because confidence is not busy screaming, "Look at me." A lot of times being confident is just being constant. And honestly, I think a lot of women are carrying a lot of unneeded emotional labor because they're constantly feeling pressured to look upgraded. And I started asking myself something quietly. Would I still want this if nobody saw it? M Oh, that question will humble you real quick.

[00:14:58]Because sometimes we don't want the thing, we want the reaction. And practical grown woman tip, build a uniform. Not boring, not lifeless, a uniform. A few silhouettes you love.

[00:15:07]Colors that flatter you. I love a good color vibe. Shoes that actually survive pavement and don't just look good. I'm getting out of the realm where they can hurt my feet. Baby, I need to be comfortable. Jewelry that works with everything. That's why I love a good gold moment and pieces that repeat beautifully. I'm not trying to look vastly different every single day. I'm trying to look good consistently. And honestly, the older I get, the more I'm realizing that the stablest women are the quieter ones. [00:15:42]Everything doesn't need an upgrade. This one right here freed up a stupid amount of money for me. Everything does not and cannot have an upgrade. Like social media has influenced us to think that something perfectly functional is embarrassing. A perfectly good couch suddenly outdated. A working coffee baker not aesthetic. And people now putting LED lights in matching jars like the strawberries are applying for residency. And don't get me started on these seasonal resets. Fall, winter, Sunday, Monday, a Mercury and retrograde reset. Jesus, baby. At this point, all of our wallets need a reset. And psychologically, this is connected to novelty chasing. Human beings naturally adapt to what they have. So, after a while, the new thing stops feeling exciting. And instead of sitting with ourselves, we chase another upgrade, another package, another makeover, another reinvention. And some of y'all are not shopping because you need things. You're shopping because your nervous system needs a hit. you need some stimulation. I know that one stung a little because I had to learn it, too.

[00:16:36]I know I mentioned my older car that I have right now, but I love the fact that when I drive it up to the dealership or when I take it to other places, people ask me like, "What year is that car?"

[00:16:46]Cuz they're wondering why because it's so wellkept. I think even keeping things for a while and keeping them up helps you to teach the value or learn the value of putting back into what you already have. You know, eventually I will get a new car because I will have to. But I love this car and I take good care of it, so it's done well by me. Why do I need to replace it just so I can have the newest one off the lot? And this is especially after stressful weeks, busy weeks, emotionally draining ones. And this is why now I shop my house first. Use what you already own.

[00:17:16]Wear what you already bought. Finish the products you already opened. Cook the food you already have in your freezer.

[00:17:21]You know, instead of buying 17 new things from Costco that could feed a whole nation. And honestly, once I stopped constantly upgrading, life got calmer, less clutter, less chaos, less decision fatigue, and less financial guilt. Because everything in your house costs more than money. It cost attention, maintenance, cleaning, storage, mental energy, and baby, peace is expensive enough already. I don't need 47 throw pillows fighting me, too.

[00:17:44]Poor me. Confession number seven. Quiet wealth looks boring. Now, this this is where people get confused because quiet wealth often doesn't look all that catchy and and eye-catching. It's the same reliable car, the same quality clothes, the same watch for 10 years, meal prepping, investing automatically, saying no to nonsense purchases, and cooking at home more than people think wealthy people do. And honestly, that kind of life doesn't really photograph well. That's why don't always upload to Tik Tok and Instagram. To be honest, financial peace isn't always photogenic, but baby, it sleeps beautifully. I can show you a good picture of me sleeping.

Chaos looks exciting. Over consumption looks glamorous and constant spending looks aspirational. But meanwhile, real wealth is often deeply unsexy. It's consistency, patience, intentionality, and even restraint. It's a woman saying, "I don't need another bag or some new shoes and keeping the money." And to be honest, a lot of times that is how people are able to pull the wool over our heads. Sometimes when we're super impressed by those things anyway, you know, one thing is having stability. The other thing is to be able to buy expensive things at the drop of a hat.

[00:18:59]That person won't always provide you stability, okay? They might be looking for dopamine hits, too. Keep that in mind. One thing that I've learned in my life and and seeing different people and being around lots of different people is that the people with the loudest wealth signals are usually not the wealthiest.

[00:19:14]Meanwhile, the people with actual wealth are somewhere wearing orthopedic shoes and minding their business. And honestly, I continue to move towards that level of financial confidence. The level where you don't need external validation because your bills are paid, your future is funded, and your blood pressure is unclenched because health is wealth too. And practical tip, automate your boring. automate savings, investing, and bill pay because grown women don't need every financial decision to become an emotional event.

[00:19:41]And another thing, learn the difference between I can buy this and this makes sense for my life. Those ain't the same sentence because technically a lot of people can buy things on credit with stress and anxiety and with paycheck dependence, which in this economy, the paychecks ain't always coming. But that doesn't mean it supports the life that they actually want. And the older I get, I realize that quiet wealth is not about deprivation. It's about not needing to prove yourself every 5 minutes. Poor me.

[00:20:06]Confession number eight. I wanted freedom more than I wanted to look expensive. And this is the core of all of this, y'all. Bringing it home. I realized that I wanted freedom and stability more than I wanted to look expensive. Freedom lets you breathe. It lets you leave. It lets you rest. It lets you pivot. It lets you survive emergencies. Freedom lets you say, "Nope, that no longer works for me." And that became more attractive to me than impressing strangers. You know, I'm adopted. Okay? So, a level of thought process for me is I always need to feel the ability to breathe. I always need to know that there's a way to get away from a situation if necessary. I always need to feel stable also. And anything that rocks my stability, it got to go. Okay?

[00:20:46]And financial freedom gives you that ability because looking rich maybe impresses people for about 10 seconds.

[00:20:52]But financial peace, that changes your whole nervous system. that changes your sleep, your relationships, your stress levels, your choices, and your confidence. And I think especially as a woman, in my humble opinion, we have to stop tying our worth to visible consumption. You don't need to constantly upgrade yourself to deserve softness. You don't need to financially exhaust yourself to prove you're doing well. And you absolutely do not need to perform success every day of your life to be or feel valuable. Some of the richest seasons of my life did not look rich externally, but I had peace. I had options. And baby, I got breathing room.

[00:21:25]And honestly, that's the life that I want for me and my family. And I want it for y'all.
