This video provides a sobering reality check by using historical data to expose the widening gap between agricultural returns and rising living costs. It effectively demonstrates that modern ranching requires sophisticated business strategy rather than just traditional intuition.

Can You Make MONEY In Today’s CATTLE Market? What Are Animals Worth?Added:
You could bid the first bid on them, but you can't bid the last bid. How's that?
>> To go get your doggy, unless you put it in the trunk of your car, which you could haul it back in the trunk, but it's going to be bigger.
Hello guys. Welcome back to the old Dodge. We're road tripping again. We're using the most important button in this truck, which is the exhaust brake.
We're headed to Cedar City with one steer and first calf heer that sloughed a calf. Not doing the best. She's alive.
We'll just get rid of her. Don't know what's wrong with her. That's why we keep extra heers so you can weed out the ones that just don't make the cut. That way you're not stuck with trash through your herd your whole life. So, it definitely pays off. Keep extra heers.
The Cedar Mountain is pretty steep. If you've ever been to Cedar, it's pretty steep. And the exhaust brake is very impressive. Four lbs of boost. Get your RPMs up, you can get six lbs of boost.
What's the old State Road doing? Just sweeping away.
We're going to drive around the dust cloud here.
So, let's go to Cedar to Cedar livestock auction. Duke or Dave will be auctioneering probably. Let's go unload load some animals and we'll probably spend some time in the cell ring. Maybe we'll go get lunch.
They got a market grill there. I usually eat breakfast there, but lunch is pretty good, too. What's their jalapeno burger?
It is jalapeno burger, right? Oh, it's that's about my favorite. Pretty delicious. Just hot enough. The flavor's there, but it's just hot enough. It's good. So, we're just about there now. So, let's pull into town, unload some stuff, and we're wearing out our equipment. We got a bunch of old equipment.
Our old calf table we've got now, I think we got the same year we got our farms.
So, we've had it 10 or more years, and it's wearing out on us. And the biggest problem is we move it.
We drag it in and out of stock trailers, move it to where we're branding or to where our calves are this spring or that spring, and it's just getting frustrating. So, we're going to go look for a new calf table, go to IFA, see what they've got, try to upgrade little equipment and see if we just can't keep keep this business rolling. You tear stuff up. It's wear and tear. You're always rebuilding. So come with us today and help us pick out a good calf table and have some good lunch. So we'll see you at the market and kick these animals out.
Just at the main light cedar turning left. The Maverick says 519 for fuel prices.
Feel like that's coming down a little bit. It was going way up. What's your guys' fuel prices again? And I was amazed and blown clear away. The last time I asked you, we had some people had 7, eight, like up to 12 bucks. Like it was insane.
This is a lot for here. But compared to you guys, I don't feel that bad about $5 anymore.
But it feels like we're trending back down. I hope hope things are going to stabilize.
The steer we have on is Charlay. kind of ugly.
And so it's really hard to compare prices because for one, he's not black and he's not not the most finished, sexiest looking steer. So it's hard to compare top numbers. I'm really curious what he goes for.
I had different plans for him, so I kept him home and those plans changed. Maybe we'll get our butts hammered today. I don't know.
Maybe maybe he's going to be worth keeping. That's just just the risk of the market. You never know who's going to be here to buy, who's bidden.
Let's see how it goes.
You about need a new sign, Duke. She's getting hard to read.
Looks like we are not the only ones here today.
>> It's like a full house.
>> We will just wait our happy butts in line. What do we got in front of us?
Horns. Oh, SJ rodeo cow.
>> SJ would want some bucket stock right there. SJ would be like, "Dad, we got to buy them." What do you think, Rat? Think SJ would like those horns?
>> Yeah.
>> He would like this black one.
>> He's been begging for some rope and stock.
>> God, I like that Yeti.
>> You like the red one?
>> Uh-huh. There was they were bucking some bowls in Panguage the other day. We went by.
>> I saw that the neighbor has a bucking shoot.
>> Neighbors had some bucking stock and SJ wanted dropped off so bad.
He was waving at me. He's a friendly guy. I waved at nobody. Anyways, yeah, we didn't drop him off, but he I was going to send you some pictures. That's funny. He noticed.
>> I like the two red ones.
>> You like the two red ones?
>> You're good.
>> We'll have room going home. Should we just trade them ours for theirs?
>> Yeah.
>> It's kind of how this works. Sell yours, buy theirs. Hey, Grandpa, look what we got.
>> No, we're good. We don't need >> You don't think we could We could have some marker pets. We could turn them loose and >> then you got to feed them, though.
>> Dad, the horns aren't chase them through the spots on, right?
>> You can't turn them into a pretty rug.
>> Dad, >> what?
>> Can I get them?
>> Can we get them?
You could bid the first bid on them, but you can't bid the last bid. How's that?
>> Make sure you don't buy them.
>> I ought to buy them.
>> It's probably a good thing we didn't bring SJ today. But this is fun. This is agriculture. This is life. This is kind of how things roll. Everybody hits green grass, hits pastures, runs out of hay.
Everything hits at different times. So, luckily once a week you can come to Duke's auction over here and try to make some money. So, let's get them unloaded.

356 branch of 7. 356 branch of 7.
Thanks, guys. All right, look at the steers right here.
>> All right, you just watched these sell in the ring and I tried to film just some odds and ends. Just different stuff so you can get a feel for what the market is. Different colors, different weights, different sizes, how old they are, how fleshy they are. There's a lot of variables and it's really hard to say if a number is necessarily good or bad because because it all depends on if she was sick, if if they were bred there.
There's a lot going on. The steer, what did you guys figure that steer weight? I should have videoed loading this morning, but that daylight Doug helped me and it was a wreck for a minute, but we got him. had plans of keeping him and feeding him out and some people backed out. So he was $775 and he sold for 356.
After charges we made 266972.
So, one one silver Charlay steer uh 775 today's market in Cedar City 2600 and we'll round up to $70.
So, I don't know if that is comparable to where you guys live or not. The young young heer that sloughed her calf sick.
She weighed $850, but you could tell she didn't look good. People weren't that interested in her. She got a buck 80, $1,480.
So, big difference there. We'll talk more about these numbers when we get home cuz there's some different things we want to touch up on for a minute, but we've got to go do some shopping.
So, we'll get out of the big city of Cedar, get out of this windy hole, get home, and we'll sit down at a table and kind of talk about these a little bit and wrap this up there. So, we'll do some shopping. See you in a minute. All right, guys. So, we made it home. It's the next day. Let's go over some paperwork and decide if we made any money or not. This seems kind of weird, but I I just kind of want to be an advocate for the younger generation, the youth growing up, that if if livestock is something you want to do, then you should do it. You should find somebody's backyard that has grass in it. Go buy some doggy. It'll be $1,000. Doggies are I mean, it's crazy. day olds are a,000 bucks. But but you can feed that thing on your grandma's back lawn all summer long, put some weight on them, go sell them and make some money. If you want to build a family ranch one day, the only way to do it is to get to work. And you know what? If it's one doggy at a time, then eventually you will get there. Me and my friend Kaden visit all the time about doing this. Like this is a little unheard of. My in-laws helped us a lot, but us being able to buy our own farm ground, our own a lotments, and make our own family business is pretty unheard of. A lot of people will take over one that's already established, but building it, it's it's a different ballgame. It's hard to do. So, don't give up. If that's your dream, go for it. Let's talk about this one steer we sold today. One head at 775 lbs. Was he a pretty steer, Dusty?
>> He was pretty average.
>> He was the wrong color. Silver steer, but he was solid. He He sold really well. 775 lbs.
Okay. After he sold, after the total charges, uh 266972.
So, one head brought almost $2,670.
That That's huge. That's a game changer.
From how many years ago, Dusty, when we first got married, you was not seeing those prices 15 years ago. Okay. What we want to get into now is did we make any money? $2,670.
Did we make That's a lot of money. But did we make any money or does that just cover bills? And here we are skipping through lunches, waiting for dinner again. Let's jump back in time. Let's go to the 70s. I feel like the 70s was a good year. They had great cars, great food. Your average new truck price 1970 to72 Oh, this is for Fords was $2500 to $3,000.
That's for the F100.
75 to 79 was 4,000 to 6,300. That's for the F-150. All right. Now, we're going to the 80s.
8,000 to 12,000. The '9s 13,000 to 20,000. See, I remember those numbers.
2000 you had 22,000 to 30,000.
2010 30 to 45. 2020 to 2024 was 45 to 55,000.
2026, that's 2 years later. Like we was jumping 10 years there. We jumped two years.
46 to $84,000.
Good night. Let's talk about a house.
What do you guys pay for rent? How much how much is your apartment? How much is your mortgage? How much of that $2,670 is going to your rent that month? Median house prices in 1970 was $17,000 to $27,000.
From 1970 to the '90s, $79,000 to $120,000. Woo, that is a jump. Okay.
1990 to 2008 $257,000.
That's posts stock market crash. 2018 374,000.
2020 $453,000 and now 2425 golly $650,000 to $700,000.
required income. By March 2026, an estimated hourly pay of approximately $57 was required to afford a medium home, compared to $3.60 in 1970. Can you believe that? That's hard to read. Let's read that again. In 1970, the approximate wage was $3.60 to be able to own a median average home.
Today, your hourly wage needs to be $57 to be able to afford a median average home.
Wow. Like, I'm not a huge stats and statistic guy, but we should have been born in the 70s.
Dusty, do you want to do the same thing with gas?
How much is gas today? $5 and what? $6, $8? No way. 1970 was 33.
1980 it was 56.
80 to 90 it was $135.
20 years we jumped a dollar. 2001 to 2010 $153.
That means I remember those prices. You remember it under a dollar. That's wild.
Man, it's weird to read these numbers.
Okay. 2011 to 2020 358.
Going to think we'd be glad for that today. 2021 to present. So 2021 is 311, 22 is 4, 23 is 363, 20, 2025 is 342, which is actually lower than 11 to 20.
Cattle market year average prices, we have beef cows, steers, and heers.
So this could fluctuate a little bit. So the 70s $2810.
So is that for 100 lb steer?
>> Yep. was $28, right? So from 70 to 80 we jump 6580 90 7720 8580 2010 was $106. That's as far as we go 2010. I should have printed off one more page.
$106 per 100.
And the 70s was $28.
It's not as big as everything else, is it? 2010 we go $16. To 2026, we go 3.56.
And that's probably average. I mean, it's not top of the line classy, but it's not trash either. So, that's a huge jump from $28 to 356.
Our gain, our differences from 28 to 356 and our fuel cost. We'll see if everything is climbing equally real quick. Okay. Hey, you're going to love this. Listen up, okay? Beef prices from the '7s, all of this is from the '7s to present. Beef today is 12.7 times higher than it was in the '7s. Trucks or vehicles, 27 times higher. Houses, any guess it on this one?
38 times higher. Gas prices today to the 70s 12.7 times higher.
So gas and beef are equal. Those playing fields are equal. Your housing market is stupid high and trucks are stupid high.
So that makes sense why everybody still drives old trucks and doesn't have brand new houses.
If that made you wonder, the house market is stupid expensive. It's no wonder people could afford to live and just flat out be happy because you could go to work and just make a living and get by and be happy. Man, how would that be? You didn't have eight jobs and never slept and side hustles. Side hustle probably wasn't a word back then. So, can a person make money selling beef, selling cattle, raising doggies in your grandma's backyard?
Well, let's jump back to 2670.
times that by 100.
That's a big number.
How much do you spend on fuel costs for one doggy? How much do you spend on fuel cost for 100 head, 200 head? 1,000 head.
Back here in the drought area, we have acres per cows. You lucky guys in the green wetlands, you have cows per acre.
So, it depends on where you live.
There's lots of variables. you can probably make way more money back east.
If I'm just saying, there's probably way more grass and it's a lot easier. It's a lot less work. So, if you live in that area, if you live anywhere, I would recommend it. If you love agriculture, go for it. Just go to work. Just find something. Just be an advocate. Just do what you want to do. Make yourself happy. Your life will never change if you don't make a step forward.
Okay. What do you guys pay for an AUM?
An animal unit per month. What do you pay for AUMum?
$30, $40, $60. What's 12* 30? $360 that it cost you to rent your grandma's backyard for 12 months and her neighbors cuz you only got 6 months out of each backyard.
So, there's that cost. You had to hire someone to go get your doggy unless you put it in the trunk of your car, which you could haul it back in the trunk, but it's going to be bigger. You've got feed cost, fuel cost, your salt. You got to have salt for them and minerals. That's going to cost. They got out, tore your fence down. You had to rebuild the fence. You had to haul water to them cuz your grandma doesn't have a water spet.
So, you had to haul water. You have buckets of water. Of the $2,670, did you make 500 bucks? Did you make a,000 bucks? Everybody's numbers are different, but there's money to be made and definitely money to be lost. So, you can lose a lot of money in a hurry. If you want to go broke, just get some cows. You can lose money in a hurry. You can acquire a lot of stuff, a lot of broke down stuff, a lot of equipment that doesn't work, and you'll be smiling about it. You'll sleep good at night.
Life will be great. This was just kind of a thought process I had of my love for agriculture and just being an advocate. If you guys want to get into agriculture, go for it.
There's there's lots of people doing it and the cattle numbers are the lowest they've been ever historically long times. So, you guys need to help out with that. Go raise some cattle. Put steaks in your freezer. I got some freezers with steaks in them. And then you can share with your family because your family's going to want them anyways. So, uh, let me know in the comments. Was this dumb? Did you love it? Was it good? Do your kids want cows now? They sell mini cows that are cuter than dogs. If you have dogs, get rid of the dogs. Go get some mini cows. We'll catch you guys next time. But this was a fun video. So, thanks for tagging along.
Thanks, Uncle Duke at Cedar Livestock Market. Thanks for letting us come hang out for the day and harass Hadley while he was trying to unload us. We'll catch you guys next time. Thanks.
