Baden's Powell masterful comping on Samba De Bênção (Samba Saravah). Chords/Vamps in Description.

[00:00:05][music] [music] >> Hi, today I'm presenting Samba Saravah, which is the famous Baden Powell's song, Samba de Ben Song, which appears in the soundtrack of Un homme et une femme by Claude Lelouch. I think it's a '50s or a '60s movie uh in which this song, quite a long version of this song appears, and Baden Powell is providing the guitar uh backing, basically, and it's very unusual in that uh Baden Powell is playing basically two chords, but he plays so many different versions of this vamp, this two-chord vamp, that uh I felt it was very interesting to present that sort of richness of playing over just simply two chords.

[00:01:03]So, let's dive in. Normally, in this song, actually Samba de Ben Song, it's played with uh some kind of D major chord [music] followed by an A7 chord. Okay, I play it in my other videos, I play four chords, actually.

[00:01:20]I play something like this.

[00:01:27]>> [music] >> Okay, so I've got a D major 7, D6, E minor 7, and uh this is an E [music] an A A9, okay?

[00:01:37]So, basically, D followed by E minor A7, [music] something like that, okay? Now, a lot of people play a very simple version.

[00:01:52]>> [music] >> Or [music] That's your D6 followed by some kind of E minor 7.

[00:02:07]Okay, with a B on the bass and and then A7.

[00:02:12]>> [music] >> Now, on Samba Saravah, this particular version, so Baden Powell plays these two chords uh in maybe 20 different ways.

[00:02:22]And that's what I'm hoping to present in this video. Okay. So, uh we said D major chord and then an A7 chord. But, what what are the different [clears throat] D major [music] versions or inversions that he does?

[00:02:38]Okay, this is one of them. [music] Okay. And this is basically a D6 chord.

[00:02:45]Uh >> [music] >> we took the F sharp and we put it at the bottom.

[00:02:50]And we end up [music] with a very nice sound actually with the nice bass, the F sharp on the bass, huh.

[00:02:56]Another version that he plays in this song is this D6. It looks like a B minor >> [music] >> 7, but let's take it as a D6 here with the B at the bottom.

[00:03:11]Okay. And you can hear it sounds quite similar.

[00:03:16]But, it's [music] not quite the same sound actually. So, we've got already two D6 chords which sound quite different, huh. [music] Okay. And then we move up here to this position where we've got uh This is a D 69, huh.

[00:03:37]>> [music] >> Now, this D69 Okay, this is a D major 9, D69.

[00:03:48]Is played sometimes you hear it like this.

[00:03:52]>> [music] >> I'm playing with three fingers at the bottom.

[00:03:57]And sometimes he plays it with four fingers [music] where you can hear this.

[00:04:05]So, sometimes [music] Okay? And sometimes And then we move to another shape. This is a D major seven.

[00:04:19]Sometimes he plays it here at the the bottom strings.

[00:04:24]And sometimes he plays the top strings.

[00:04:28]Okay?

[00:04:33]Okay. Now, I've added a little vamp, actually, in which I play this. This is like a D major nine.

[00:04:45]Okay? You will we'll talk about it later, but he plays mainly in [music] this position.

[00:04:56]>> [music] >> And then the last one is Okay? So, this is a D major six or a D six, but we have the D [music] on the bass.

[00:05:11]Or it can be played like this.

[00:05:14]>> [music] >> So, we can transit to another chords easily, okay?

[00:05:21]So, we've got, I think, seven different sounds of this D chord, D major chord.

[00:05:27]Uh never a triad always some kind of D six nine, D major seven, uh or something like that, okay?

[00:05:37]The D six actually comes back over and over.

[00:05:40]Now, we go to the A seven chord. Okay?

[00:05:43]So, [music] how many versions of that do we have? Lots, huh? So, uh the first one I'm going to do in this position is this Okay, so this is an [music] A13, so it's an A7 with a sixth, huh?

[00:05:57]So, it's an A13.

[00:06:00]>> [music] >> And you will often hear this sound.

[00:06:10]So, going from the [music] A13 to the A7. Now, you will see that when I play the vamp, sometimes I don't put the whole chord down, actually, because [music] I'm I'm playing the bass on the A, so there's no point. Sometimes, you don't really need to put all the fingers down, huh? So, don't [music] be confused by the fact that sometimes I play the Okay, this is the A7 chord, or the A13 to A7. [music] Another very interesting chord that you will hear a lot in this song.

[00:06:52]Your guitar has [music] to need to be tuned properly, actually, for this to work out, cuz you've got that B repeating [music] twice, huh?

[00:07:00]Okay.

[00:07:06]And so, this is an A9th, huh? So, you've got the [music] seventh here, and you've got that B, which is the ninth, actually, which is on two strings, huh?

[00:07:18]>> [music] >> And this chord is played a lot, actually, with some decorations.

[00:07:24]>> [music] >> Even some very fancy. [music] >> Even you know with the [music] or This is one vamp one of many vamps and you can make up your own actually. This is the interesting thing is that these positions you can use to make up your own vamp.

[00:08:06]>> [music] >> Okay, so we've got to this chord. First one is this one.

[00:08:11]>> [music] >> With lots of different decorations, okay?

[00:08:16]And then we've got this one.

[00:08:19]Okay, this is quite a standard [music] like A7 chord.

[00:08:24]Okay, you can play it like this as well with the little bar here.

[00:08:31]Okay, [music] this is the same as this chord here.

[00:08:36]Now why play the chord that if you can play it here why play it here?

[00:08:40]>> [music] >> The interesting here actually is you've got nice staccato you can actually mute the strings quite [music] easily here which you might want to do that.

[00:08:53]>> [music] >> Same applies to this chord.

[00:09:04]Okay, so we we looked at the uh A this is one the A9. This is an A7. This is an A13 [music] just like this one.

[00:09:18]Okay, now we've got similar here.

[00:09:24]This is another chord.

[00:09:25]This is a ninth, [music] huh?

[00:09:28]This A9.

[00:09:30]Back to A7 >> [music] >> but this time we're playing the top strings.

[00:09:39]>> [music] >> Okay.

[00:09:45]>> [music] >> That's another vamp, okay?

[00:09:53]Uh do we stop here for the I think this is all the >> [music] >> A7 chords. Now, I've added one at the end.

[00:10:04]Uh >> [music] >> because I wanted to go up to the top of the the fretboard, actually. I thought it was interesting to go [music] This is an A9.

[00:10:14]And this is like an A 13th, huh?

[00:10:18]>> [music] >> I added the fingers, so that could be in >> [music] >> So, I've added this vamp at the end to complete the series because we've got vamps covering all sorts of positions, but perhaps not the top position here on the fretboard.

[00:10:39]So, let's look at some of these vamps.

[00:10:41]So, the the the song starts with this vamp, actually.

[00:10:49]>> [music] [music] >> Okay, so we go from this one.

[00:11:03]And you can hear the melody.

[00:11:07]>> [music] >> And then he switches to a similar vamp, but he doesn't play the full uh D69 chord. Now, he plays [music] just part of it.

[00:11:32]So, we've got a different melody here.

[00:11:36]>> [music] >> Okay?

[00:11:48]And the vamp goes like this.

[00:11:55]>> [music] >> So, this is the other A7 or A9 chord here. [music] So, he's mix- he's beginning to mix now different vamps, if you want.

[00:12:23]Uh and then we have things that are fairly simple like >> [music] >> Okay?

[00:12:35]>> [music] >> Dmaj7 A13th vamp.

[00:12:44]Then we have things like >> [music] >> And of course, these vamps can be enriched by doing something like that.

[00:13:09]>> [music] >> And at some point we go from these vamps here. [music] I think he comes back to this one occasionally.

[00:13:28]>> [music] >> And then we go to Okay, you >> [music] >> can see this shape to an A9 shape.

[00:13:45]>> [music] >> See, this is very nice, huh?

[00:14:01]Okay, and now I'm going to join two vamps together. The new one is this.

[00:14:08]>> [music] >> Now, this is actually something new, huh? Because now he's playing two chords on the D.

[00:14:21]D6, another D6.

[00:14:24]And this time he's actually introducing E minor. This is the only place where rather than go straight to the A7, he plays an E minor [music] 7.

[00:14:35]Is it an E minor 7? I think it's an E minor, actually, huh? There's [music] no D here.

[00:14:41]Before going to the A13, huh? And I think this is one of the nicest vamps here.

[00:14:55]Especially if you play it after this one.

[00:15:03]>> [music] [music] >> And this vamp can be [music] you can play it in a different way, actually.

[00:15:37]>> [music] [music] >> So, this was quite a long one, huh? So, I've chained together several of these vamps uh to make it interesting. So, the the last vamp I play is uh goes like this.

[00:16:14]Okay, so I'm playing >> [music] [music] >> Okay, so this is quite a difficult one, huh? Because we're playing quite uh a lot of different things >> [music] >> uh back to back, huh? Okay, and I've added uh vamp um I think I've added a couple of vamps, actually. Let me try this.

[00:17:41]I thought it sounded [music] quite nice and I've added another vamp.

[00:17:48]>> [music] >> Okay, so I lost count actually of the number of vamps that I've introduced here. I'm sorry about that, but you can see that you can do quite a lot with just these chords. So you've got about six different D chords and you've got about six or seven different A chords and you can mix and match and do all sorts of embellishments and decorations of on virtually each one of these chords and do something really nice if you're improvising or even if you're playing this song and sing singing this song. Uh but this is mainly actually for for improvising uh and making these two chords go quite a long way by using all these vamps and different inversions, huh?
