When exhaust pipes become severely corroded and thin (less than half a millimeter), complete rebuilding is more effective than patching; the process involves cutting out the damaged section, welding new pieces to join the front and rear sections, dressing up the joints for a neat appearance, and applying high-temperature paint for protection.

Exhaust Repair
Added:Hey guys, hope you're all well. Right, Honda, a bit of fabricating today on the exhaust. I'm going to sort that out because it's in a bit of a mess. Uh before I get started on that, I just wanted to address one thing. I've seen a comment or two about people wondering if I am moving everything to Patreon. No, absolutely not. Um I've spent a lot of time and hard work and years trying to build up this YouTube channel and I'm certainly not going to duck out of it now. No chance.
This will continue exactly as it always has done. No change whatsoever.
Weird and wonderful projects, silly little jobs, it'll all be the same. I've always had Patreon. It's only recently I've started putting videos on there.
Um, I've had Patreons that have been on board from the very beginning, which obviously I can't thank enough. So, I'm giving the patronons a little bit of something. It's extras going on there.
Yeah, some of it's bike related. Some of it won't be. Some of it could be just, I don't know, let's say bloky stuff.
Anything of interest, little ride outs in the evenings, uh finding places of interest. Uh the odd little thing on the BMW cuz you know, patrons have uh in theory helped build that bike. And without the patronons, I I've said it before, this would be impossible. I wouldn't be able to do it. So, to share a few videos of uh behind the scenes extras or whatever on there is a little bit of a return, you know, people come on board for as little as a dollar, which what's that 75 a month to watch the videos. Um, and some people are kind enough to do $2, $3, $4, $5 or whatever. And it it it's a bit of return from me just showing stuff outside the shed as well. Anything really, anything. The European road trip will be on here on the YouTube channel as always. Um, I don't know. I might do little extras while I'm out traveling on that European trip. Just little short things for the Patreon and stuff like that. But this channel's not going to change and it I'm going to continue to build it up and build it up. It's never going to be massive. I know that. It's never going to be a huge channel and it's never going to make me rich. I always also realize that. Uh, it's one of them. Not many people want to watch a silly old fat fall in a garden shed messing with motorbikes, but I enjoy it.
I could quite easily go off, well, probably not easily, go off and get a job that will give me far more than what this gives me, but I enjoy this and I'm sticking with it always with the fingers crossed that it will give me a little bit more to live on as time goes by and the channel grows. But the Patreon thing, it helps me out immensely.
I don't always shout off about it. I'm not I don't ram it down people's throats like some channels every single video.
Don't forget to like, subscribe, don't forget to go to Patreon. Some channels do it every single video. I don't like doing that. You know it's there. You know that by the coffee is there. You know where it all is. It's all in the comments. I don't need to keep ramming it down people's throats. Uh, I just appreciate all the extras, all the little bits of extra support because it helps keep me going and it certainly helps me continue with the YouTube channel trying to build it up a little bit more. Anyway, so yeah, it's going nowhere. Don't panic. This channel will be always here and the Patreon be always there. It'll be just silly little extras, interesting extras, whatever. It could be absolutely anything that goes on Patreon, but there will be bike stuff on there. It will be viral. Like I say, I've been putting some of the BMW stuff on there, the little shenanigans and ups and downs with that cuz the patrons have helped me build that bike basically.
Anyway, Honda exhaust repair. We'll have a look around it now because I've been I've been busy body doing a few bits on there. We've got the uh we got the casing back on.
Obviously, we didn't put that little thing in there. I've seen loads of people in the comments saying, "Leave it out." I totally agree. It's It seems to be a thing that failed.
We've got the decompressor up on the exhaust valve.
It'd be absolutely fine without that.
I've left the uh the cable lever on there just in case the guy decides to put one on.
Yeah, I'll just keep it simple. That's already there, ready to go. Anyway, I've been tidying the engine up a little bit, cleaning things. It's gradually getting better and better. Uh, as you can see, the exhaust still looks terrible because I need to get a repair done here. And then it'll all come off and it'll all get cleaned up.
And I've got some high temperature paint to paint all the exhaust pipe. But I've got to get the repair done first. We've got a new front sprocket on because the old one was absolutely worn out. The little retaining clip on the front there was completely worn out and the sprocket was Yeah, it was all wobbling like that. So, I've replaced all that. You can see we got the chain on. I got to go around and tighten everything up and set the back wheel and everything like that. Uh, I got to paint the footrest, get them on, but today I want to take care of the exhaust. Now, I was going to try and repair this. I've cut the bad bit out, as you can see, but it it really is like tissue paper. In fact, that bit there is not even half a mill.
So, my welder, it will just end up completely blowing that away. And it's extremely weak.
Anyway, I think it's this bit of the exhaust is way past itself by date. Yes, I could probably patch that up some way somehow, but who knows? You know, all this bit ain't sort of less than half a mill thick and due to rot out anytime soon. So, I've got some bends and I'm going to try and completely rebuild this section here. I've got to chop that flange off in a minute. And then we got to bolt that to our rear section here, our silencer. And then do whatever in this gap to join it all up. And obviously, it's going to look a lot better than trying to patch that bit up that's just completely rotted out. So, that's our little job for today. And when it's all done, I'm going to do it obviously weld all the tubes together so you can't see the joints or anything. It'll be a very neat job. Then we'll get it all off and get the entire exhaust all dressed up, cleaned up, and painted. That's today's job. Okay. We'll start with getting this uh flange off cuz we got, like I say, we got to bolt that to the silencer and then fill the gap up basically.
Right, we'll give that a bit of a clean up on the wire wheel.
Right, I've got the the flange on there with just one bolt. I've now got to decide how much I'm going to trim off these.
And I'm going to weld them together cuz this this one's sort of set back into the bike more than this. So, it's basically got to sort of dog leg out and come to this pipe here.
I think I'm just going to basically chomp away at it a little bit.
Do it bit by bit.
Taking a bit off. Trying it. Taking a bit off and trying it till we've got something close enough to tack together.
Okay. I just uh wrapped a bit of tape around that so we can get an half decent cut line.
Okay, I've just had a quick look at that. I'm going to cut this one fairly short. I still might have to trim it back further into that bend. We will see.
Okay. So, we got that stumpy bit there.
Let's try and hold that there.
And we got to get it returned onto that bit somehow.
I think I'm just going to cut bits off it at a time because I I don't want to well try and not make a mistake cuz these bends are actually quite expensive. I went to a local place for these just for quickness and I was quite shocked at the price. But hey, I was there so I'll just add them.
I definitely don't want to scrap them out.
Oh yeah, we'll just chomp a bit away at a time till that fits in there.
Right, I've done a fair bit of messing about. I've got it about there, I think. I think I'm happy to get some TS on there and then uh see how we're looking then.
Right, let's check that out. Right, I've got enough tacks on there to hold it in place.
I think I'm happy with that.
It's all clear.
Yeah.
Okay, we got that off then. That's not too bad.
So, I'm going to get that welded up. I'm not going to film too much of that. So, I'm I'm trying to save the camera. Uh when we've welded that up, we'll get all this join dressed up. There's a bit of a step in it there.
kind of unavoidable, but I'll try and shape it up better. See the step?
That's the trouble with joining it on the uh on the bends cuz obviously when it's formed it it goes out of shape. So, we got to try and join that up a bit better than that.
And then I'm going to cut this off for our little exhaust guard to go on.
which bolts there.
Oh, we're getting there.
Just trying to get that slight mismasher shape.
Some get somewhere near That should do it actually. Right, I'll get that welded up and we'll dress it all back.
Right, that's a bit better.
Okay, I need to uh cut this out of here now.
I'm literally just going to cut it out as close as I can. I'll probably dress that back up on the lathe.
Then we can use it on our new bit.
Might grind that back a bit more. Then put it in the lathe. And that should do it.
Don't you just love it when that happens?
It's just fell straight off that chair.
Right.
I'm going to put that be in the lathe.
Now I'm going to ignore that's happened for 10 minutes.
Moving on.
I've just been going around it with the uh cut brush on the grinder now.
Just trying to get as clean as possible before I put some of the uh high temperature paint on. I mean, it's never going to be absolutely perfect, but we'll get it presentable.
I'm going to spend a bit of time going all over it now.
I've got the exhaust painted. Just scooted along a little bit. Got some new gaskets for here. Some copper ring gaskets.
Get that in there.
That's them sorted.
We got new exhaust collets as well.
Right, I'll just get the other side done and then we'll do all that up.
Right, that's all that nipped up. Now for our little guard get this on and then oops I'll tidy up the uh silencer and give that a coat of paint.
That's tidy enough, I think.
That's all right.
Okay.
Much later in the day now.
That's the uh the silencer cleaned up.
and had to go and have a shower. I don't know what was on that silencer as I was daing it all off. Oh, it's disgusting.
So, I uh went and cleansed myself.
Anyway, I'm not going to put that on till tomorrow now. I may as well leave it overnight to go properly dry and I'll get it on tomorrow. But that's definitely a big improvement.
I'm glad that job's done. I enjoy the metal work, but I'm glad that one's done cuz we're getting closer. Just basically getting on to the wiring.
Yeah, we're ticking away. I got to paint the uh foot rests, get them on. Just little jobs, and then the wiring.
We're nearly there. Yeah, I'll I'll get the silencer on tomorrow. I've uh just changed the mirrors on the BM as well, so it adds I I put some really posh mirrors on it that I had, which yeah, a bit too posh for it. If I fell off, I probably would have destroyed them if I fell off. When I fall off, I probably would have smashed them up. So, I've took them off.
So, these are going on eBay. These are roma. What are they?
Ain't got my glasses on. Apheric Roma mirrors. Yeah, they got a couple of I mean tiny tiny tiny marks have been on a bike at the end of the day, but general condition they're quite nice.
They are on eBay. They're about £240 a pair.
Crazy.
I I will say I didn't pay that for a I think I swapped them for something. I think I did. Anyway, let's have a quick look at the mirrors on the BM. They fold up out the way.
As you can see, it's getting dark out here. This camera picks up excellent light. So, yeah, they pivot there basically. So, if you fall off, they just go up like that out the road.
Got me little RAM camera mount there on that one. Yeah, they're really good.
any cheapo things, but they're they're all right.
Plotting through the patron names as well. It's a long process, but I'm getting there.
All the uh all the new patrons are going on as well. Everybody has joined recently. I'm getting you all uh cut out and stuck on the on the bike. And yeah, I'll chip away each evening at that.
Just a little bit. Eventually, you'll be all on there. Right, that'll do. It's late. I've got to clean this shed up ready for tomorrow.
Cheers for watching, guys. Take care.
