You are not your thoughts, body, or self-image, but rather the awareness in which these appear; the self-image is merely content that arises within awareness, and recognizing this distinction reveals that the true self is the unchanging awareness that witnesses all experiences without being affected by them.

YOU ARE NOT THE ONE READING THISAdded:
A few words sat on a screen.
And something turned toward them.
A short claim, almost like a provocation.
You are not the one reading this.
And in the instant those words were taken in, a familiar voice rose up to answer them.
Of course I am.
I am right here.
I am the one looking.
Stay with that voice because that voice is exactly what we are going to examine.
That claim is not a trick, and it is not an insult.
It is a precise statement about something almost no one ever stops to check.
When those words were taken in, a sense of being a particular person rose up to receive them.
A someone, a me. And that someone felt completely real, completely obvious, completely beyond question.
Today we are going to question it anyway, slowly and carefully, and see what is actually there.
Let us begin with the simplest fact, the one so close that it gets missed.
There is awareness happening right now.
Something is aware.
That much cannot be doubted because the doubting itself would have to be witnessed by the very awareness in question.
Awareness is the one thing that survives every attempt to deny it because the denial appears inside it.
Now, here is the move that changes [music] everything.
Most people assume that this awareness belongs to the person, >> [music] >> that there is a self, and the self is aware.
The self comes first, and awareness is one of the things it does. [music] We are going to turn that around and look at it the other way.
What if the person is something that appears in awareness rather than awareness being something the person has?
Hold the two of those side by side because the difference is the whole teaching.
In the first version, you are a self who happens to be conscious.
In the second version, you are consciousness and the self is one of the things showing up inside you.
The first feels obvious.
The second sounds strange.
And the strange one is closer to the truth.
Let us test it directly because this is meant to be checked not believed.
Right now, notice that there are thoughts.
Thoughts arrive on their own.
The last thought you had appeared before you could decide to think [music] it. It simply showed up, formed itself, and passed.
If you were truly the thinker, you would author the thought before it arrived. But the authoring would itself be a thought, which means another thought would have to author that one.
And the whole thing collapses into something that was never doing the thinking at all.
So watch what is actually happening.
Thoughts arise and something is aware of them arising.
The thoughts are the content.
The awareness is what they show up in and you have quietly assumed your whole life that you were the thoughts when the entire time you were the space they were appearing in.
If this is making something shift, like the video, let us hold the same mirror up to the body because the body feels even more like self than thought does.
There are sensations right now.
Pressure, temperature, the feeling of contact, a faint hum of being alive.
Notice that these are known.
They show up to awareness the same way thoughts do.
You are aware of the body.
And here is the quiet weight of that.
If you are aware of the body, then in some basic sense you are something the body is appearing to.
The known and the knower stand in different positions. [music] The body is known.
So, the knower is something else.
Something the body is showing up inside of.
This stays a full acknowledgement of the body.
The body is real and it matters.
It is simply a noticing that the body is a content of awareness, the same as everything else.
The body appears. Something is aware of its appearing.
And that something is closer to what you are than the body it is aware of.
Now, let us turn the mirror to the hardest one, the self-image, the sense of me.
This is the one that feels least like content and most like the bedrock of everything.
The me, the personality, the one with the history and the name and the preferences.
Surely that is you.
Surely that is the one to whom everything else appears.
So, look directly at it.
Where is the me right now?
Not the thought of me, the actual me.
When you look for it, what you find are more thoughts about yourself, more memories, more feelings, more sensations.
You find content. [music] You keep finding content.
The separate, solid thing called me >> [music] >> stays one step out of reach, always the thing being looked for, never the thing actually found.
The self-image is a particularly sticky piece of the known.
It is a recurring thought and feeling pattern that shows up so often and feels so familiar that it got mistaken for the one watching.
But it is still content. It still appears.
And whatever it appears to is what you actually are.
Comment the line in this you had to read twice.
Let us slow down because the mind will try to escape this in a particular way and the escape [music] is worth seeing.
The moment the self-image is questioned, the mind will say, "Fine, but there is still someone doing the questioning.
There is still a watcher." And it will quietly rebuild the self right there in the position of the watcher.
So, let us look at the watcher, too.
When you try to find the one who is aware, the one doing the watching, what do you find?
You find more awareness.
You find awareness itself with no separate owner standing behind it.
This is the turn the whole teaching rests on.
So, let us be precise.
There is awareness and there is content showing up in it.
The watcher you keep trying to find turns out to be the looking itself with no little self positioned behind it, running it, owning it, doing it.
The owner was always just another appearance.
The looking has no one inside it doing the looking.
So, when the words on that screen said you are not the one reading this.
Here is what they meant.
The one you took yourself to be, the me who rose up to receive those words, is content.
It is an appearance.
It belongs to the same category as every thought and feeling passing through.
What received those words at the deepest level was the awareness the person appears inside of.
And that awareness is what you are.
If you want more of this kind of work, subscribe.
Now, the mind has a question here, and it is a good one.
So, we should meet it honestly.
If I am this awareness, then why does the self feel so real?
Why does the me feel so solid, so continuous, so much like home?
Because attention keeps returning to it.
A pattern that receives constant attention becomes a world.
The self-image is rehearsed thousands of times a day.
Every memory references it. Every plan assumes it. Every feeling reports back to it.
It feels solid for the same reason a word repeated 10,000 times feels solid.
The repetition does the work that bedrock only seems to be doing.
The continuity runs the same way.
The self feels continuous, like one unbroken thread from childhood to now.
But look closely, and the thread is made of memory.
The past self is a present thought.
The future self is a present thought.
The continuity is stitched together right now out of memory and anticipation, both of which are appearing now in the awareness that is only thing actually present.
So, the self is real as an appearance and the kind of fiction as a separate owner.
There is genuinely a personality, a history, a set of patterns.
They appear.
They function.
But, they are weather, not sky. They move through and you are the sky they move through rather than any particular cloud.
Let us go further because there is something freeing waiting here that the mind almost always misses.
When a person believes they are the self-image, every threat to the self-image becomes a threat to their existence.
Criticism feels like annihilation.
Failure feels like death.
The loss of a role, a relationship, a reputation feels like the loss of being itself.
Because if you are the content, then when the content is threatened, >> [music] >> you are threatened along with it.
But, the awareness you actually are stands outside the reach of all of that.
It holds praise and insult the same way as things that show up and pass.
The criticism arrives is known and dissolves and the knowing of it stays whole. The one thing you truly are has moved through everything that ever happened to you without taking a single mark from it.
Stay with that [music] because it is not a small thing.
Everything that ever wounded you wounded the self-image.
The awareness that held the wound stayed uncut. It cannot be cut.
It is the one place in you that every painful thing has passed through leaving the place itself exactly as it was.
This is why the teaching is the opposite of bleak.
It sounds at first like it is taking something away.
You are not the one you thought you were.
That can land like a loss.
But what it removes is the fragile self that was always under threat.
And what it reveals is the one thing in you that nothing has ever been able to touch.
Let us be careful here though because there is a way to misunderstand this that makes people colder.
And that is the opposite of what this is.
Seeing that the self is an appearance does not turn the self into garbage or other people into illusions or your life into something to walk away from.
It runs the other direction.
When you stop being so identified with the self-image you stop spending all your energy defending it.
And that energy becomes available for actually living.
The person who knows they are the sky rather than the cloud can let the clouds move freely. They can feel more not less because they are no longer terrified of what the feeling might do to a self that was never really at stake.
The recognition does not turn you into a ghost.
It makes you spacious enough to hold your whole life without being crushed under it.
There is a common worry that comes up right about here.
So let us meet it.
If there is no separate self running things then who makes the choices?
Who lives the life?
Does everything just fall apart into drifting?
Look at how a choice actually happens though.
The options appear.
A weighing happens.
A decision arises.
An action follows.
All of that occurs beautifully, completely, on its own, the same way the heartbeat occurs and the breath occurs and the healing of a cut occurs. [music] The idea that a separate self was needed to push it along was always an extra story laid on top of a process that was running fine without it.
Life does not fall apart when the imaginary manager steps aside.
It keeps happening, often more cleanly, because there is no longer a frightened little self interrupting it, >> [music] >> second-guessing it, claiming credit and assigning blame.
The choices still get made.
They simply get made without the exhausting belief that someone separate has to make them.
Let us look at one more place this shows up, because it is where most of human suffering actually lives.
Almost all of it comes from the self-image defending itself.
The comparison, the resentment, the need to be right, the fear of being seen as less.
Every one of those is the content fighting to protect itself, mistaking its own survival for yours.
When you see, even for a moment, that you are the awareness and the self-image is just one more appearance, the defending loses its urgency.
The insult still arrives, but there is no longer a desperate need to repair the wound, because the one who was wounded is understood now as a passing shape rather than the whole of you.
The peace that follows is not something you build.
It is what was always there underneath the defending, finally allowed to show.
Let us return to the simple test one last time, because the whole teaching can collapse into a single moment of looking.
Right now, there is awareness.
In it, thoughts arise and pass.
Sensations arise and pass.
The sense of me arises and persists and feels solid.
And all of it, every bit of it, is showing up to something that is not itself showing up.
Something that is simply quietly already here, aware.
That is what you are. The thought passes through it.
The body passes through it.
The awareness, all of those are appearing inside of right now, exactly as it has been your whole life, waiting only to be noticed.
So, the words on that screen were never an insult after all.
They were an arrow pointed at the one place you have never thought to look.
Not outward at the world and not even at the self, but back at the awareness doing the looking.
The one who rose up to read the title was only a guest.
And the awareness that guest appeared in, the silent room that has held every thought and every face you have ever called yourself, was the host the whole time.
It was never reading anything.
It was simply >> [music] >> and effortlessly aware.
