Something Big May Be About To Happen For Type-1 Diabetes

[00:00:12]Now, over the next few days, which is this weekend, some of the biggest names in Type [music] 1 Diabetes research are about to take center stage and for people with Type 1 Diabetes like you and I, this weekend could feel a little bit different. Because for the first time in a long time, there is a real momentum building behind something bigger than just [music] insulin, something bigger than insulin pumps, something bigger than better glucose sensors. [music] The conversation is beginning to shift towards something people with Type 1 Diabetes have dreamed about for, you know, decades basically, restoring [music] natural insulin production. And this weekend at ADA 2026, >> [music] >> we may be getting a clearer picture of where science is taking us, in the direction of finding an absolute cure for T1D. [music] Now, to be clear, nobody knows exactly what is going to be revealed [music] this weekend and really that's part of what makes this so intriguing and so exciting. Right now, different companies are racing [music] toward the same goal and they're using some different strategies in order to get there.

[00:01:21]>> [music] >> Some are trying to replace insulin-producing cells that have been destroyed by Type 1 Diabetes, others are trying to protect those very cells from the immune system and of course, some are attempting to do both at the same time. We've covered all of [music] this kind of stuff on this channel.

[00:01:38]But after years of really slow progress, it suddenly feels like everything is starting to accelerate. Don't you agree?

[00:01:46]I mean, just look at how far we've [music] come so far. You know that Vertex showed the world that stem cell-derived [music] islet cells can restore insulin production people who already have Type 1 diabetes like [music] you and I.

[00:01:59]Now, that alone changed the conversation. You know, for years this this felt very distant, but now it actually feels realistic. And then there's our friends over at Semma Biotechnology. They've been working on something that [music] sounds downright futuristic. And that is creating insulin-producing cells designed [music] to survive without being attacked by your own immune system.

[00:02:24]Now, if that approach continues to improve, it could fundamentally change the way this therapy [music] looks.

[00:02:30]Probably in the very near future. Well, you know, they're not alone across the type 1 diabetes [music] research landscape.

[00:02:37]Multiple companies are pursuing different paths toward the same destination.

[00:02:43]Vertex is advancing stem cell-derived eyelid treatments. [music] Our old buddies over at Semma Biotechnology are busy developing a hypoimmune [music] cells designed to evade the immune attack, basically making them invisible.

[00:02:57]Sernova continues refining its cell pouch platform [music] to support long-term cell survival, and researchers are working with Tiago Bubar based [music] transplant approaches, exploring new ways to protect transplanted cells [music] with less immune system suppression. So, different companies, different [music] technologies, different strategies, but they all have one thing in common.

[00:03:20]They're trying to reach the [music] same goal, and that is helping people with type 1 diabetes restore [music] natural insulin production.

[00:03:30]Some groups are focused on protective [music] devices, others are exploring immune therapies, encapsulation systems, gene editing, and [music] the entirely new ways to help transplanted cells survive for the long term. And [music] many, many people will be watching very closely to see if the next big step [music] is about to emerge toward a cure for type 1 diabetes. Is longer-lasting cell survival, [music] maybe it's stronger and more consistent insulin production, or it could be a breakthrough in immune production.

Cuz sometimes the best and biggest moments arrive very quietly, and then everybody realizes the [music] entire field has changed once again.
