We Built A GIANT LEGO Drilling Rig!

[00:03:28]>> He said he's almost through with that one. Not quite.

[00:03:30]>> So, you always got to tinker.

[00:03:31]>> Yeah. Not quite done yet.

[00:03:33]>> Okay. So, about 3 days ago, we were stuck in the house and they said they wanted to build Legos. So, we built Legos. We built this right here, which was >> night time.

[00:03:44]>> This was Kaden's birthday present. This is a 18-wheeler race car transporter. I just broke it. Oh, indile.

[00:03:50]>> That's okay. Doors pop open.

[00:03:52]>> But yeah, the doors pop open. You got these little indie cars right here. And so we built that.

[00:03:58]>> Yeah.

[00:03:58]>> And then Bubba wanted to build his little tractor. And so we built that and that's all we had. We had those two sets that we bought from the store. And then the next day they said, "We want to build Legos." I was like, "We already built Legos." And they said, "No, we want your Legos.

[00:04:13]>> Daddy's Legos."

[00:04:14]>> So I have a ton of Legos because growing up I was a Lego maniac. Like I have totes of just random collection of Legos. Like I have some sets that are like still organized and have all the pieces, but then we have like a grab bag. It's just pounds of Legos. And so I got my Legos out and we built this. This is a set that I had for when I was little. Me and Kaden built that. A little bit too advanced for Kaden, but he thinks it's cool to play with it, so he kind of watched me.

[00:04:42]>> And it's very durable. Like this one can stand up to a little four-year-old. uh dirt biking the heck out of it and it's it's taken some crashes and it still keeps on going. So, I like this one.

[00:04:54]>> All right. And after we done building this, Caleboo right here said she wanted a helicopter. And since I didn't have a pre-made helicopter, we made her this custom helicopter using all our imagination.

[00:05:06]Do you like it?

[00:05:07]>> Yep.

[00:05:07]>> What's your favorite part of the helicopter?

[00:05:10]>> The spinny part.

[00:05:11]>> Yeah. It's got two spinnies, right?

[00:05:14]>> Oh, yeah.

[00:05:16]And then Bubba said, "I want you to build me something." And he couldn't decide what he want me to build. So I decided to build >> two tractors, >> a zeroturn mower just like ours, except for this one is not orange. And it works.

[00:05:30]>> Complete with its own little arm.

[00:05:35]>> And then when I got done with that, Boba said that he wanted me to build him >> that matches the little one he has in the garage. So there we go. We got Boba and Daddy matching zero turns. And then Kayla built a couch so she could watch us work.

[00:05:47]>> Yep. As what did you build?

[00:05:48]>> I built a hospital.

[00:05:49]>> And Kayen found a horse. Uh >> oh.

[00:05:51]>> So, what did you build, girl?

[00:05:52]>> I built a hospital, but all the pieces are broken on the inside. These are all I could find. This is all I can find.

[00:05:57]>> She made all the beds for the hospital patient. She had uh pill bottles, computers, laptops.

[00:06:05]>> I'm not going to lie, some of your bed pieces went to uh the drilling rig when you weren't looking. We were borrowing.

[00:06:44]>> So, we built all of this. Some of it instructions, some of it by our imagination.

[00:06:49]>> And then the kids kind of lost interest.

[00:06:51]But then I had this giant mess that my wife was letting stay in the living room and she wasn't making me clean up. So, when they weren't interested anymore, I just started tinkering a little bit. I was like, I'm going to tinker with some things from my past in the oil field and see if I can make something.

[00:07:05]>> We are the Legos Builders. The Lego building family. We are the Lego builders. Are you a Lego builder?

[00:07:12]>> I'm a Lego cleaner upper. I don't necessarily get in on the builds. Uh I just like things to be clean and neat and organized as we're building. So that's my job. What's up?

[00:07:24]>> I hope you are a Lego builder. A master Lego builder. You do good. So I just have a question for everyone before you see the masterpiece.

[00:07:36]Just so you know, I'm 43 years old and she left me unsupervised for a couple hours.

[00:07:41]>> Yeah. A couple First off, a couple hours. Second off, no instruction book.

[00:07:46]Third off, no pictures, just what's in his brain of his. I told him if I had worked in a drilling rig all my life, if I had the most detailed instructions ever and I only had the pieces that could actually go to the kit to make it work, I probably still couldn't build what he built in literally less than a day. I mean, he tinkered on it a few different times and so I'm going to say it took a little bit over a day, but it's just cuz he's been adding things to it and making improvements. But I am definitely of the team. I can't build Legos. Even if I have an instruction book in front of me, my mind just doesn't see in pictures or be able to create things from nothing.

[00:08:27]>> In the old field, we call you a ground man. Someone's got to keep the people up there working and supply man. Yes, I'm I'm a ground man. I will supply you with all the Lego blocks in the world.

[00:08:36]They'll be pretty as you build. Uh but as far as creating things, no, that's not my forte. So, this kind of stuff literally amazes me. But what amazes me more is when I see it in our children.

[00:08:48]Like I can see it happening with them.

[00:08:51]Like they have your mind when it comes to this. So it's just interesting to see what they come up with and see what it could evolve into when you turn into a 43year-old unsupervised husband.

[00:09:02][laughter] >> First of all, he turned 43 yesterday.

[00:09:04]And second of all, he built all this while he was only 42.

[00:09:08]>> Oh. Oh, look at that. She gets that from you. Miss technicality.

[00:09:11]>> There is a technicality. Let's put in a little aster by it. He was 42 when he built this cuz he just turned 43 yesterday. So, I can't wait to see what 43 years on this earth gives us next after this massive build.

[00:09:26]>> Can I show them yet?

[00:09:27]>> Yes.

[00:09:28]>> Say, drum roll, please.

[00:09:29]>> Drum roll, please.

[00:09:32]>> Boom. So, here's our driller rig.

[00:09:44]That guy's name is Billy. Billy likes to hang it up here. And we got a flag. This originally started with just some Legos.

[00:09:52]Right now, this is connects and Legos.

[00:09:54]But originally, I was just trying to build a top drive. If you guys don't know what a top drive is, it's that made out of Legos. But in real life, they look very similar to that. It's what drills the hole in the ground. And that's what I made a lot of money working almost most of my life until these people came around and then I decided to, you know, not do that. So, I was just trying to build a Lego top drive just to see if I could. Well, obviously I could. And there it is. We even have elevators. We have bales. We have everything. I sure wish I could hang it in a Derek, but I don't have enough Legos to build a Derek. So, I put the Legos aside and we got my connects out. This is actually a connect roller coaster. If you guys don't know this, from like 1995, they had a giant roller coaster that did a loop-de-loop.

[00:10:40]Little Kevin had that and old Kevin still has that. So, we repurposed it and I started building this Derek right here and I kept building and eventually I got me a Derek that I could put my top drive in. It was a little complicated figuring out the hook adapter and the spacing for the fingerboard and all that to make it super realistic because if you're going to build it, it might as well be realistic, right? So, we built a top drive. We built our Derek. We have our crown. We have our people up here. We have our people on the fingerboard. And then I said, "Man, I wish it would work." So, I built a draw works that is powered by this DeWalt right here. Do you want to show them work? Here you go.

[00:11:20]You going up or down?

[00:11:21]>> Up.

[00:11:23]Up. You're going down. All right. Go up, girl. Here we go.

[00:11:32]All right.

[00:11:33]>> Now go down.

[00:11:34]>> You want to take them back down?

[00:11:35]>> I'll go down.

[00:11:35]>> No, I will. What?

[00:11:42]>> Y'all doing work?

[00:11:44]>> They are doing work.

[00:11:46]>> Did you already do it?

[00:11:48]>> You want to do it?

[00:11:48]>> Everybody get a turn.

[00:11:54]>> Who gets the fastest? I mean, who gets the closest to the >> Let's not Let's not crown out.

[00:12:07][screaming] All right, Bubba. You want to take it up? Take it for a spin, bub. And she already switched it for you.

[00:12:30]There's a lot of work going on up here if you can't tell. Everybody's got walkie-talkies are all important. Here.

[00:12:34]You want me to help you switch it, Bubba? It's kind There you go. That reverse is kind of hard. We don't use reverse in the oil field very much.

[00:12:42]Gravity.

[00:12:48]All right. So once we built our top drive and our Derek, we needed to add more Lego people to it, more equipment.

[00:12:54]So naturally, I had to build me an iron rough neck and it doesn't actually move. But there's our iron rough neck.

[00:13:04]It screws the pipe together. Just look it up. It's pretty close. And then of course, we had to build some workers. So we got a welder right here with this portable welding assembly. We got this guy right here who's in charge of the megaphone. We got a bunch of guys with walkie-talkies and one guy with the ranch. There's three guys watching this guy work. So, just like an oil field.

[00:13:22]>> All right.

[00:13:23]>> It's just We got two guys working on the elevators and riding it up and down.

[00:13:27]It's against policy, but we like to get things done.

[00:13:29]>> We got this guy right here riding on top of the top drive. I kind of think we forgot he's there.

[00:13:34]>> Yeah, he's he's probably not supposed to be there.

[00:13:37]>> That mommy.

[00:13:38]>> That's mommy.

[00:13:39]>> That's mommy.

[00:13:40]>> Okay. And then we got five guys on the fingerboard and three of them have walkie-talkies and there's a broom.

[00:13:46]>> Lots of cheats. Lots >> lot. There's in the real world there's one guy up here, but offshore there's no guys up there. [laughter] >> And then we got Billy. Billy hangs out right here just chilling. And then we have these two dudes up here in a parrot on top of the crown watching the flag. A lot of walkie-talkies. Very few workers.

[00:14:04]>> Yes. And security. That's >> No, that's a security guy.

[00:14:08]>> Yeah.

[00:14:08]>> What's he securing? He's making sure everyone's safe. And there's one up there.

[00:14:12]>> Oh, okay.

[00:14:13]>> And there's one right here.

[00:14:15]>> And oh, security guards everywhere.

[00:14:16]>> Yeah.

[00:14:17]>> Are you sure those aren't just bosses, supervisors?

[00:14:19]>> Then we got this one.

[00:14:24]>> Oh.

[00:14:24]>> Oh, look at that. You ran right into the drilling rig.

[00:14:27]>> I was bringing workers. Where's my platform?

[00:14:30]>> It's usually over there.

[00:14:31]>> Oh, well, >> we don't fly near the Derek.

[00:14:34]>> We're checking it out. You want to fly?

[00:14:37]Go for it.

[00:14:41]And then I got real bored and decided I had enough blue pieces left over to make a mud pump. It's not the best mud pump because I'm running out of pieces now, but I made a mud pump as best I could out of Legos with the pieces I had left.

[00:14:53]>> Is that your shameless plug for everyone to send you their unused Legos so that we can just >> I need blues, reds, and yellows. Now I >> have a Lego party for all of his either too hot to work or too wet to work days.

[00:15:06]These are great offday activities.

[00:15:08]>> Bubba's still flying. Oh. Oh, boss man's here. Y'all better get Y'all better make hole. Boss man's here.

[00:15:13]>> Uhoh.

[00:15:13]>> You know, only the important guy shows up on the chopper >> all by himself.

[00:15:19]>> Big problems. Big >> big problem.

[00:15:21]>> Big problem.

[00:15:22]>> If if the boss man shows up flying his own helicopter, you got big problems.

[00:15:26]>> Big problems. That's hence all the people with the walkie-talkies. Now we get it. Now we get it.

[00:15:31]>> And then I decided to use my DeWalt to make it go up and down. I actually have it made to where I can have more lines on it and I strung it up with eight lines. You can see I got more pulleys there. Turns out my Lego top drive is not heavy enough to make it come down and I was backlashing the draw works.

[00:15:46]So, we had to go back down to two lines.

[00:15:48]So, until our top drive gets heavier, we can't run the full pulling capacity of this Derek.

[00:15:53]>> Whatever you say, sir. Just smile and nod, y'all. So, what started out as a extremely hot day that was too hot to go outside turned into tinkering with Legos turned into a grown man being unsupervised for long enough to create all this.

[00:16:08]And I've tinkered for about four different days making it better, doing some things to make it more realistic because if I'm going to build it, might as well build it right.

[00:16:17]>> Got to be structurally sound.

[00:16:18]>> Well, the other day I had to put a Derek extension in because I was crowning out before I could pick up the the pipe off the fingerboard. makes no sense to you.

[00:16:25]But for me, I was like, "The top drive should really go higher."

[00:16:27]>> As he's working, he's like, "Oh my gosh, so many things make sense of why they do this and this in real life because now I see with the weight what it's doing wrong." And I'm like, "Uh-huh. Whatever you say."

[00:16:37]>> What I actually said was, "Even Legos act like real life equipment."

[00:16:41]>> Yeah.

[00:16:41]>> Because that top drive wouldn't hang right.

[00:16:44]>> I had to figure out >> why. It was the same reasons why it wouldn't hang right in real life. It's the same things. It's just little. We've used almost We've used all the good pieces. Like I told Alicia, all the good pieces are gone. Now I'm trying to make things with what's left over. It's actually kind of interesting to see if you can create things with what you got as opposed to following the directions.

[00:17:03]>> Yeah. Some 20 plus year old or no, how old are these Legos?

[00:17:06]>> Well, these are from the '9s.

[00:17:08]>> Yeah. So, Legos and connects from the '9s. And he used quite a bit. Like our pile was huge and now it's just a little pile on the rug in the living room floor.

[00:17:17]>> But all the good pieces are here.

[00:17:18]>> All the good pieces are here. I don't know if I can build any more of this because we don't have any more good pieces.

[00:17:23]>> Yeah, I said uh we need to ask you guys what should he build next. But he has to be okay disassembling this first. So, this might live with us for a little bit until the kids are disabled.

[00:17:33]>> And then maybe we have a drilling rig accident.

[00:17:35]>> Oh, then we have an accident. We got to tear her down.

[00:17:37]>> Maybe it falls over. [laughter] >> Oh gosh.

[00:17:39]>> Maybe we maybe we have a blowout and things get real. You going to do it too?

[00:17:43]Uhoh.

[00:17:44]>> I'm going go faster.

[00:17:45]>> Don't Don't mess that. Stop.

[00:17:48]You see how nervous I make him?

[00:18:13]We also had no way of telling the top driver to thron rough neck there so they can run over each other too.

[00:18:18]I got tied to the walkie-talkie crew.

[00:18:24]>> We need like a draw bridge where they can walk.

[00:18:27]>> So funny story. Ash asked me, did guys used to ride this? And I said, actually back in the day before we got got feelings and and all that stuff, when these guys had to get up here, they didn't climb the ladder. They jumped on the elevators. That's why they're called the elevators. They rode up to the top.

[00:18:40]The guy kicked him out. He stepped off.

[00:18:43]Other guy stepped on, rode back down.

[00:18:45]>> And probably did it without any stop in motion. Just >> And no harnesses either.

[00:18:49]>> Yeah. Just quickly up and down.

[00:18:50]>> Back when men were men.

[00:18:52]>> Back when things weren't so regulated.

[00:18:55]>> So now they're doing it because it's Legos and no one's going to report us.

[00:18:58]But in real life, if you try to do that, you would you also a helicopter ride home.

[00:19:05]>> Get it all cleaned up.

[00:19:06]>> You should mow around this rig, man. You know how that company man gets. M my pretty flowers over.

[00:19:10]>> Anyway, guys, this is our drilling rig in our backyard, and it's probably going to be the drilling rig in our living room for the next at least month.

[00:19:17]Probably at least until school starts again. I'll leave it up. But we need to tear it down at some point and build something else. So, what should we build next?

[00:20:28]>> Oh, Billy on the zipline. What if Billy had a zipline? You know, the drilling rigs have the escape line that runs from up there all the way out here. So, if there's a fire, he jumps on it and escapes.

[00:20:40]>> Another All I need is some string right now. We can make that happen right now.

[00:20:44]>> We have string right here.

[00:20:45]>> I know. No, >> this is real life.

[00:20:47]>> In real life, there is there is a Dono line. They call it Dono line from right here on the fingerboard to the ground.

[00:20:54]If there's a problem down there, he doesn't want to climb down the ladder into the problem. So, he has a thing right here. He just goes whoop.

[00:21:00]>> There's so many safety things I learn after you're done working in this industry that I'm just like, is that really really? Y'all are okay with Hey, if things get real, just zipline across. It's fine. We're in the ocean. No big deal. Just >> No, no, this is this land rig.

[00:21:37]>> Do you know Do you know the worst accident I was ever involved in? I was on the rig floor. And this thing right here, the guy didn't set the brakes right. And this thing full speed until it piled up in the on the bottom of the floor right there.

I was this far away from it when it hit >> and I was so scared but at the same time I couldn't take my eyes off I just wanted to see the carnage [laughter] like the amount of after it hitot >> after it hit I was like okay it's over no stuff fell for like 20 more minutes things kept falling out of the derek >> so we couldn't leave either because we were hiding in something so we couldn't leave because things were still falling >> oh my gosh yeah not cool >> and then when I called my boss I was like hey man top drive fell on the floor he's like okay cool what do you need I was like a new and new.

[00:22:25]>> And he goes, "No, no, no. For real." And I sent him a picture of it piled up and he goes, >> "On the way."
