Despite El Salvador being historically the most dangerous country in the world, its ghettos in cities like San Salvador and San Miguel now have a higher safety index than many larger American cities such as Los Angeles and Detroit, meaning visitors and residents often feel safer walking through Salvadoran ghetto streets than through American urban ghettos, even though income levels and housing conditions are significantly worse in El Salvador.

Which is safer, the ghettos in America or the ghettos in El Salvador? I went to El Salvador to find out what life is like in the ghettos. While life in the ghettos here is difficult and poverty exists, I immediately felt much safer walking through these streets than I ever would in the ghettos of Los Angeles or Detroit. Obviously, the income is far less here and the housing is worse, but the overall safety index just isn't comparable because most cities in the United States rank far lower in safety.
I never felt worried walking here, even as a foreigner. While I regularly watch my back in larger US cities. I'm curious, do any Salvadorans feel the same way?
