The Rebellion Started Earlier Than You Think! | Annotating The Hunger Games | Chapter 5

[00:00:03][music] Hey guys, what's up? I'm CJ and welcome back to my galaxy. Today I am getting back into my series where I'm annotating the Hunger Games. Now, what we're up to today is chapter five, which is super exciting. We're really getting through the book. Now, if you don't know how this series works, basically what happens is that usually, if you guys don't know, I am going through annotations of the Hunger Games series on live, so you guys can see me do my annotations live as I'm thinking through it and analyzing the novel. But here, I'm going back through those annotations and basically doing a deep dive analysis of The Hunger Games. So, if you guys love a good literary analysis of the Hunger Games series, then this is the series for you. Like I said, we're up to chapter 5 today. We're so close to 5,000 subscribers. So, you should definitely subscribe. But without further ado, let's get into my annotations for chapter 5 of The Hunger Games. Okay, so like I said in the intro, we're doing chapter five today.

[00:01:40]So, I don't know how many pages this one is. I actually have not checked how many pages chapter 5 is, but we'll just we'll end up finding out eventually. So, I actually don't know remember where we left off. I think we Yeah, I think we're about to enter into meeting SA and Katniss with being styled essentially.

[00:02:00]Uh oh, yeah, Via, I think that's how you say her name. So, chapter 5 is essentially her getting styled and learning more about the capital people, capital life, sinner, all of that. Okay, let's get into this. I've highlighted quite a bit. I think I learned more about how I how to annotate by now. So, yeah. So, I have quite a few things highlighted and annotated in this section. RIP. I grip my teeth as Venia, a woman with aqua hair and gold tattoos above her eyebrows, yanks a strip of fabric from my leg, tearing out the hair beneath it. Sorry, she pipes in her silly capital accent. You're just so hairy. Imagine being told that as a teenager. My god, why do these people speak in such a high pitch? Why do their jaws barely open when they talk? Why do the ends of their sentences go up as if they're asking a question? Odd vows, clipped words, and always a hiss on the little letter S. No wonder it's impossible not to mimic them. Via makes what's supposed to be a sympathetic face. Good news though, this is the last one. Ready? I get a grip on the edges of the table I'm seated on and nod. The final swath of my leg hair is uprooted in a painful jerk. At least she like warns her that she's doing the wax strips. Um, I've highlighted this area, Venia, and her appearance essentially for her characterization. So, we know her appearance. I want to be drawn to how exactly Vineia looks. And I think I've done that. Yeah. For Octavian Flavius here. That's also why I've highlighted this. And I've highlighted capital accent because that's what Katniss refers to as an accent and the differences in accents depending on the district on District 12 compared to the capital. And then I've also highlighted the remake center because that's an area, a location within the Hunger Games world, so I wanted to be drawn to that specifically. I've been in the remake center for more than 3 hours and I still haven't met my stylist. Apparently, he has no interest in seeing me until Venia and other members of my prep team have addressed some obvious problems. This has included scrubbing down my body with gritty foam that has removed not only dirt but at least three layers of skin, turning my nails into uniform shapes and primarily ridding my body of hair. My legs, arms, torso, underarms, and parts of my eyebrows have been stripped of the stuff, leaving me like a plucked bird, ready for roasting. I don't like it. My skin feels sore and tingly and intensely vulnerable. But I have kept my side of the bargain with Hamish, and no objection has crossed my lips. This is really weird. I know a lot of people bring it up when they're talking about that like their their analysis of the Hunger Games when they strip them entirely of body hair that is very infantilizing of the women because mostly the boys are allowed to keep their body hair. So, it's an infantilizing the women in this way. And we already know previously that they are kind of weird around the tributes. And we don't know about Finnick's specific story at this point in the novel, but we do now knowing in hindsight what we know about Finnick, that it is they're insanely gross when it comes to infantilizing particular tributes and making sure they're rid of body hair, specifically the female tributes. So, it's to do with the way that they are portrayed as attractive to the capital citizens and how they sell them and traffic them. So, it's very unfortunate that they do this. It's supposed to be this beauty standard of infantilizing women and that's why they do that to the tributes. You're doing very well, says some guy named Flavius. He gives his orange corkstrew locks a shake and applies a fresh coat of purple lipstick to his mouth. If there's one thing we can't stand, it's a whiner. Grease her down, treating her as inferior as well.

[00:05:28]Grease her down is so funny. And they're they're not exactly treating her like an animal. Maybe here grease her down maybe a little bit, but it's definitely treating her as inferior. So they're like controlling what she's doing and how they're styling her and prepping her for the stylist sinner. Vinia and Octavia, a plump woman whose entire body has been dyed a pale shade of pea green, rubs down with a lotion that first things but then soothes my raw skin.

[00:05:55]Then they pull me from the table, removing the thin robe I've been allowed to wear off and on. Now this here as well, this is a very different look at how the tributes are uh prepped for the stylists. And we know that in Sunrise and the Reaping and the 50th Hunger Games, they actually spray them down with insecticides, which is a very different treatment that Katniss gets.

[00:06:15]She actually has a lot of like human body products in and hygiene products that aren't for treating animals. So that they're very much treating them less like animals, just as inferior people by this time, by Katniss's time, compared to Hamitch's time. I stand there completely naked as the three circle me, wielding tweezers to remove any last bits of hair. I know I should be embarrassed, but they're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if any if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet.

[00:06:48]Katniss does not see them as human. And I believe that I wrote that annotation as well after reading Sunrise on the Reaping. So we know that there's this thing where they treat the tributes as animals obviously as we know from Sunrise on the Reaping. And as I was saying before that they treat them as animals, but we see Katniss actually turning that around and treating the capital people like animals. She treats her stylist team actually as pets because she sees them beneath her as well. She sees them almost as animals, like giddy little pets, giddy little puppies, something like that. So, she has this she turns it back on like the oppression she experiences and turns it back on the capital themselves, which I find kind of ironic. I think that would be the word. There's an irony to that.

[00:07:31]The three step back and admire their work. Excellent. You're almost You almost look like a human being now, says Flavius. And they all laugh. Now, this in hindsight is quite interesting. You almost look like a human being now knowing that they have in the past been treated like animals. I think this though you can interpret this quite differently to what how you interpret it in sunrise on the reaping. Now they are very explicit with how they see them as animals but you almost like a look like a human being now is because she Katniss looks to them very scruffy like an animal but not in the way that she's still human in some sense. So, I think you can interpret it more like they're teasing her in a way that comes across wrong. I guess if you guys understand what I mean, that they're just teasing her and that's something you say to your like friends. Maybe you're a more tomboyish friend who dresses up for the first time and you're teasing them and it's something like that. And it's more to do with how the time period was when this was written back in 2008. So, I feel like it's more like that rather than animals or treating her as an animal. Um, but you can interpret it differently now with Sunrise and the Reaping. So, I wonder what you guys think of that as well. Like, do you how would you interpret this line, you almost look like a human being now? Is it because they're going into this thinking that Katniss actually doesn't look like a human or they see her as an animal or is it more like a teasing like when she was absolutely covered in hair?

[00:08:52]Is it because she's just more of this tomboy-ish character and they're teasing her? Is it in comparison to her being an inferior human or is it because they're comparing her actually to an animal? Let me know your thoughts. I force my lips up into a smile to show how grateful I am. Thank you, I say sweetly. We don't have much cause to look nice in District 12. This wins them over completely. Of course you don't, you poor darling, says Octavia, clasping her hands in distress for me. See is that's why I'm saying like more as an inferior person, like the more tomboyish character being dressed up. It's because Katniss and Octavia even agrees so that they think that Katniss doesn't have much reason to look nice in District 12. So, for the first time, she looks like a dressed up person. So, it's like less anim animalistic, more like an inferior person to me. That's at least how I'm reading it. Not necessarily animalistic.

[00:09:41]But don't worry, says Vinia. By the time SA is through with you, you're going to be absolutely gorgeous. We promise. You know, now that we've got rid of all the hair and filth, you're not horrible at all, says Flavius encouragingly. Let's call Sinner. See, they they think beforehand she seems horrible, like she's inferior to them. They dart out of the room. It's hard to hate my prep team. They're such total idiots. Now, that's Katniss really thinking of them as the um like the pets that she ends up thinking of them as. And yet, in an odd way, I know they're sincerely trying to help me because that's the way that they're brought up. That's the ideologies they're brought up with. I've also I have this annotation down here that I think is pertaining to what I've highlighted. Katniss's thoughts on her prep team reflect the capital and district divide. Katniss is turning the oppression back on her prep team, which is what I discussed earlier. I looked at the cold white walls and floor and resist the impulse to retrieve my robe.

[00:10:32]But this sinner, my stylist, will surely make me remove it at once. Instead, my hands go to my haido, the one area of my body my prep team had been told to leave alone. My fingers stroke the silky braids my mother so carefully arranged.

[00:10:44]My mother, I left her blue dress and shoes on the floor of my train car, never thinking about retrieving them of trying to hold on to a piece of her of home. Now I wish I had. That's very reflective. Oh, here it is. I what I immediately thought of as something I actually wrote down as an annotation.

[00:10:59]See, I'm thinking the same as my past self here. The opposite of Lucy Gay keeping her mother's dress. Now, she Lucy Gay keeps and wears her mother's reaping dress. Not her reaping dress, her dresses. And that's Lucy Gray's reaping dress. So, she has a connection to her mother. So, it's quite the opposite, but she's thinking that maybe she perhaps should have but kept it, especially since it's one of the things that her mother brought from her from the merchant class area. It's one of her old dresses. Okay, let's move on to the next paragraph. And I've highlighted a few things here. And I'm going to read this annotation here at the end of this paragraph. The door opens and a young man who must be SA enters. I'm taken aback by how normal he looks. Most of the stylists they interview on television are so dyed, stencled, and surgically altered they're grotesque.

[00:11:44]But S's close cropped hair appears to be its natural shade of brown. He's in a simple black shirt and trousers. The only concession to self alteration seems to be metallic gold eyeliner that has been applied with a light hand. It brings out the flexcks of gold in his green eyes. And despite my discuss with the capital and their hideous fashions, I can't help thinking how attractive he looks. Now, what I've written here is this humanizes people. Suddenly, they aren't so different. Since SA hasn't actually altered himself as much as the rest of the capital people, suddenly Katniss begins to see that not all of them actually are so grotesque. and so weird looking, so different from how her lifestyle is. Suddenly, they're human in the same way that Katniss is human because of their simply because of their appearance. "Hello, Katniss. I'm SA, your stylist," he says in a quiet voice, somewhat lacking in the capital's affections. "Hello," I venture cautiously. "Just give me a moment, all right?" he asks. He walks around my naked body, not touching me, but taking in every centimeter of it with his eyes.

[00:12:45]I resist the impulse to cross my arms over my chest. "Who did your hair?" I find it all very very weird though that Cace is naked so much in this chapter and there's so many eyes on her that she isn't embarrassed. She mentions it that she should be embarrassed but she sees them as non-human. So she it's I do find it very weird that she's naked at this point and not clothed. She does have a robe, but at the same time, like he's look, it's not necessarily weird in the way that like Susan Collins has written it in the specific way that to make you uncomfortable, but at the same time saying they they're the kind of sees these people as non-human. So, it's different, but she's built up this world to be like make you uncomfortable, but at the same time, it's to world build on what their culture is and how their culture is used to maybe nudity in different ways than like it's not they're not censoring it. So, nudity is seen more as a fashion statement, but at the same time, as we know with Finick Story, it is still at the same time very very weird. Just personally, that's what I think. I think a lot of people will also agree with me on that one. Did I read the last line there? No, I don't.

[00:13:55]Oh, I said, "Who did your hair?" I for a second I was like, "What? I can't remember the last line." "My mother," I say. It's beautiful, classic, really.

[00:14:04]And in almost perfect balance with your profile. She has very clever fingers. He says SA here is essentially taking in like Kis's figure and as well at the same time he's trying to he has to fit her outfit perfectly to her as well and style it in that way. I had expected someone flamboyant, someone older trying desperately to look young, someone who viewed me as a piece of meat to be prepared for platter. Sena has met none of these expectations. See, that's that's another way like they're stripping them down to the blank canvas, which is why she's there's so much nudity in this section of the novel.

[00:14:39]It's still to me it's like so weird that the capital does that, but it makes sense with the characterization and the world building of the capital. You're new, aren't you? I don't think I've seen you before. I say also with the prepared piece of like a piece of meat being prepared. It's still like you're you're presenting Katniss is not only inferior as a human but also almost anim animalistic. Most of the stylists are familiar constants in the everchanging pool of tributes. Some have been around my whole life. Yes, this is my first year in the game says Sinner and I think I've highlighted this for world building purposes so I want to be drawn to it and that's like characterization for SA. So they gave you district 12. I say newcomers generally end up with us the least desirable district. I asked for district 12, he says without further explan explanation. Why don't you put on your robe and we'll have a chat? And then I have an annotation here. The first sign of S's agenda and dislike for capitals, the capital's oppression. Now the reason I've written that is because we can understand that SA chose the smallest district, the most undesirable because they are one of the most oppressed districts. They're the ones that are so small and need help rebelling. So SA saw potential in District 12, and we know he would have asked for it because he had ulterior motives in line with the rebellion.

[00:15:54]Pulling on my robe, I follow him through a door into a sitting room. Two red couches face each other over a low table. Three walls are blank. The fourth is entirely glass, providing a window to the city. I can see by the light that it must be around noon, although the sunny sky has turned overcast. Sinner invites me to sit on one of the couches and takes his place across from me. He presses a button on the side of the table. The top splits and from below rises a second tabletop that holds lunch. And this is where I end up starting to highlight every time that food is mentioned in some way as the double meaning for the Hunger Games because a you'll find that in each of the of the chapters food is mentioned so so much because there is an abundance of food in the capital and Katniss also is starving and in poverty in district 12.

[00:16:45]So there's a very big difference of food and what they have in terms of resources within the capital and the districts in Panama. So Susan Collins is trying to point that out to us by mentioning food so many times. Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly white grain. Tiny green peas and onions rolls in shapes like flowers. And for dessert a pudding the color of honey. Now I've written an annotation I think to do with the food.

[00:17:12]Cace often does not recognize the food she is eating. She lacks food security and luxury. Susan Collins has multiple meanings for the Hunger Games. And that's the first time I really started understanding the multiple meanings of the Hunger Games and how to annotate and how I wanted to annotate in this specific book and how I wanted to highlight all of the food that's mentioned. And it's particularly interesting in this section because there's this pearly white grain that Katniss doesn't know is rice.

[00:17:37]Eventually, she does actually refer to rice because she learns what it is later in the books. or maybe in Catching Fire she perhaps says it's rice. Either way, we'll come across it later when she actually starts referring to these pearly white grains as rice because she's never seen these types of foods before. So, she doesn't understand what it is exactly. So, she has her own ways of describing things because food and different kinds of food the capital has is actually completely a luxury that Katniss doesn't have. I try to imagine assembling this meal myself back home.

[00:18:10]I've highlighted this for emphasis because Katniss doesn't quite understand like the abundance or she does understand the abundance the capital has and this is her referring to it here but she doesn't quite understand like the what is the equivalent to what she what she's looking at because she has her own idea. This is legit Susan Colin saying like what is Kenneth's idea of this food? There are things in her world that makes more sense to her because she doesn't she has food that is in her world regularly. Like pearly white grain isn't in her world regularly. So she makes a comparison of what food security she has which is almost none. But she does have like regular foods come across her that is like the not the luxurious food she comes across in the capital.

[00:18:53]Chickens are too expensive but I could make do with a wild turkey. I'd need to shoot a second turkey to trade for an orange. Goats milk would have to substitute for cream. We can grow peas in the garden. I'd have to get wild onions from the woods. I don't recognize the grain. Our own tester rations cooks down to an unattractive brown mush.

[00:19:12]Fancy rolls would mean another trade with the baker perhaps for a two or three squirrels. As for the pudding, I can't even guess what's in it. Days of hunting and gathering for this one meal.

[00:19:21]And even then, it would be a poor substitute for the capitals version.

[00:19:25]Even if she had all the money as well for from being a victor, she'd still wouldn't have these foods in District 12 because they simply don't have foods that look like that or like they chickens are very expensive. She doesn't have like milk for cream. Goats milk would have to be due for green cream, but she also doesn't have rice. She's never come across rice before. So even in District 12, they even if she could afford to buy rice, she's never seen it before and she can't access it in District 12. What it must be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button. And I think that I find that sentence very powerful, so I've highlighted it there.

[00:20:02]How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by? What do they do all day, these people in the capital, besides decorating their bodies and waiting around for a new shipment of tributes to roll in and die for their entertainment? Well, they don't do much, I guess. Like a lot of people, I would say people who aren't of the capital elite don't always have as much wealth as some of the capitals. Like we see with the battle of Songbirds and Snakes, Snow is a part of the capital elite because of his social status, but he doesn't have the finances after the war.

[00:20:32]So, not all the capital people like have all the finances in the world as the ultra rich like the Heavensby and the Snows and all of the other capital elites. So there's still quite a disparity in the capital, but they still have the ability to climb the ladder in the capital, and they don't necessarily have it at the press of a button, but at the same time, they have the ability to eventually get there when Katniss does not have that opportunity. I look up and find S's eyes trained of mine. How despicable we must seem to you, he says.

[00:21:01]Has he seen this in my face or somehow read my thoughts? He's right, though.

[00:21:05]The whole run lot of them is despicable.

[00:21:08]No matter says sinner. So Katniss about your costume for the opening ceremonies.

[00:21:12]My partner Porsche is the stylist for your fellow tribute Peter and our current thought is to dress you in a complimentary costumes. As you know it's customary to reflect the flavor of the district. For the opening ceremonies, you're supposed to wear something that suggests your district principal industry. Now I have highlighted this part as this is a part of how the games work and I want to be drawn to it once again. A lot of the highlighting that I've done are things that I want to be drawn to to do with world building and characterizations. All of that thing, all of that. District 11, agriculture.

[00:21:44]District 4, fishing. District 3, factories. This means that coming from district 12, Peter and I will be in some kind of coal miners. Get up. Since the baggy miners jumpsuits are not particularly becoming, our attributes usually end up in skimpy outfits and hats with headlamps. And I've said down here to do with this highlighting the capital once again exploiting children's bodies, skimpy outfits is so gross that they would h they would do that with children. So it just it doesn't it's the way the capital is and everything to do with fashion is completely disgusting.

[00:22:17]And SA and Porsche go with something completely different because SA has a different agenda and he doesn't follow along with the weird skimpy outfits that they do in the capital with the tributes. One year, our tributes were stark, naked, and covered in black powder to represent coal dust. It's always dreadful and does nothing to win favor with the crowd. I prepare myself for the worst. All of this is so gross and it sucks. The fact that the capital is and the culture is exactly like this.

[00:22:47]So, I'll be in a coal miner outfit, I ask, hoping it won't be indecent. Not exactly. You see, Porsha and I think that coal miners things very overdone.

[00:22:57]No one will remember you in that way.

[00:22:58]And we both see it as our job to make the District 12 tributes unforgettable, says S. I'll be naked for sure, I think.

[00:23:05]And I wonder if SA also, we know that he expresses himself through his art, through his fashion, and that's how Katniss ends up as the mocking jay. I wonder if SA also chose District 12 specifically to make them unforgettable because he saw so much potential that if he made them unforgettable, would District 12 alongside their oppression be able to have this moment with like have their face of the rebellion come out of District 12? Because he knows they have so much potential to rebel.

[00:23:33]They just don't have the population to do so. They don't have the proper people around them to make them unforgettable.

[00:23:40]So he goes towards district 12 knowing that there's so much potential for a rebellion there. If he could just come in with his archestry and enable them to be unforgettable and therefore enable the face of the rebellion to come up and begin the rebellion and just make everyone unforgettable because District 12 has that massive amounts of potential. So rather than focus on the coal mining itself, we're going to focus on the coal, says SA, naked and covered in black dust, I think. And what do we do with coal? We burn it, says SA. You're not afraid of fire, are you, Katniss? He sees my expression and grins. Katniss obviously pulls her face in this section, and I find it very funny because this is the very, very, very beginning of the girl who was on fire and SA being a little bit cheeky with his expression towards Katniss and with his idea. A few hours later, I'm dressed in what will either be the most sensational or the deadliest costume in the opening ceremonies. I'm in a simple black uniard that covers me from ankle to neck. Shiny leather boots laced up to my knees, but it's the fluttering cape made of streams of orange, yellow, and red, and the matching headpiece that define this costume. SA plans to set them on fire just before a chariot a chariot rolls into the streets. I've highlighted this section because I wanted kind of to just have a reference of what exactly this outfit canonically looks like just with book cannon, not with movie cannon. The movie cannon actually changes it a little bit. We don't have the streamers of Orange, Yellow, and Red. They simply CGI that in because that is what they set a flame in the book. So, they don't necessarily need to put that in as the as streamers in the movie. So, they have translated it quite well onto screen, but it does look a little bit different. They don't have the headdresses. I believe they put headdresses on them as well in a moment.

[00:25:29]It's not real flame, of course, just a little synthetic fire Porsche and I came up with. You'll be perfectly safe, he says. But I'm not convinced I won't be perfectly barbecued by the time we reach the city's center. My face is relatively clear of makeup. Just a bit of highlighting here and there. My hair has been brushed out and then braided down my back in my usual style. I want the audience to recognize you when you're in the arena, says Sarah Dreamly. Katniss, the girl who was on fire. Now, that's the first instance of the nickname, the girl who was on fire. The girl on fire, Katniss. So, that's the very first instance where they've actually mentioned it. SA is the first person to say it, obviously, because it's his idea. It crosses my mind that S's calm and normal demeanor masks a complete madman. Despite this morning's revelations about Peter's character, I'm actually relieved when he shows up dressed in an identical costume. I think that I've highlighted that pertain because it pertains to Peter and Cannis' relationship and how it's developing over time. He should know about fire being a baker's son and all. His stylist Porsche and her team accompany him and everyone is absolutely giddy with excitement over what a splash will make except SA. He just seems a bit wary as he accepts congratulations. Now I wonder why he's wary because he doesn't think it'll actually work or he knows the kind of rebellion he's inciting by making District 12 unforgettable. We're whisked down to the bottom level of the remake center, which is essentially a gigantic stable. Now, this remake center stays relatively the same, I believe, and it's a gigantic stable, which is utilized, I believe, in the 50th Hunger Games. We see the exact same thing, and it's described the exact same way in Sunrise and the Reaping. Uh, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I'm remembering, that it was essentially a stable that they brought to for the tribute parade. I think they're presenting it a little bit differently when it comes to uh the movie, but I think that's what is book cannon as well. It's just a gigantic staple. The opening ceremonies are about to start.

[00:27:24]Pairs of tributes are being loaded into chariots pulled by teams of four horses.

[00:27:28]Ours are coal black and that's also what I've highlighted to do with how the games work and how the uh tribute parade works and that they have black horses pertaining to the District 12 export and what the industry is. The animals are so well trained, no one even needs to guide their reigns. Well, as we know from Sunrise and the Reaping, they actually aren't that well trained. So, it's kind of ironic that Katniss thinks that and she trusts them that much when really it doesn't work out so well for Hamage and specifically Luella. So, let's move on.

[00:28:02]SA and Porsche directs us into the chariot and carefully arrange our body positions, the drapes of our capes before moving off to consult with each other. What do you Think," I whispered to Peter about the fire. "I'll rip off your cape if you'll rip off mine," he says through gritted teeth. "Deal," I say. I have an annotation to do with this as well, and I think it's something to do with the Peter or Everlock banter.

[00:28:26]I love this interaction. Katniss's fear leads to asking for some support for Peter and their banter. I love Katniss and Peter's banter. I love how uh Peter also has really good banter and they actually develop their relationship through this because Peter is incredibly charismatic. So they actually, yeah, they develop their relationship because they're actually offered this opportunity through fear and they kind of have this like bond because of they're fearful of the ways they're being dragged through the Hunger Games.

[00:28:52]Maybe if we can get them off soon enough, we'll avoid the worst burns.

[00:28:56]It's bad though. They'll throw us into the arena no matter what condition we're in. I know we promised Hey Mitch we'd do exactly what they said, but I don't think he considered this angle. Oh, I for sure think they considered this angle that they potentially could die.

[00:29:08]So, because he definitely did now that we have Sunrise of the Reaping, he considered that it could go really bad, but he's like trying to just say if you go along with it, then maybe you won't get injured. You'll be less likely if you just go along with everything. And he probably also thinks that if something goes wrong during this tribute parade, then he can't do anything about it. I think he actually does is not appear at the end of this tribute parade, this one specifically. And in Catching Fire, he does appear at the end of it because we can assume that Hamitch didn't want to watch these two die in case something did go horribly wrong during the parade. Since he's trying to help both Peter and Katniss as much as possible when putting them into the arena, he's hoping that they don't die.

[00:29:49]But anything that he could mentor them in wouldn't prepare them for them possibly dying during the tribute parade. There's nothing he can do at this point. Where is Hamish anyway?

[00:29:58]Isn't he supposed to protect us from this sort of thing? Says Peter. Well, he can't. That's the thing. He literally cannot protect them because he knows from experience. With all that alcohol in him, it's probably not advisable to have him around open flame, I say. And suddenly, we're both laughing. And I guess we're both so nervous about the games and more pressingly petrified of being turned into human torches. We're not acting sensibly, which is more of their relationship developing and the banter between them as well. The opening music begins. It's easy to hear. Blasted around the capital, massive doors slide open, revealing the crowd lined streets.

[00:30:31]Now, I do wonder if this whole tribute parade is where Susan Collins looked back at her writing and went, "Oh, this is somewhere I can put a plot point for Sunrise and the Reaping that she had this idea a while ago that potentially something did happen with Hamage and his games and that's why he doesn't appear."

[00:30:46]She probably did have quite she added this line in the like where is Hamage anyway later on during an editing stage.

[00:30:52]I wouldn't be surprised if that happened when she brought up and like when she wrote out all the backgrounds of all her characters. So, I I wouldn't be surprised if she knew about that right when writing this and knew it could be a plot point in the future. The ride lasts about 20 minutes and ends up at the city circle where they will welcome us, play the anthem, and escort us into the training center, which will be our home/ prison until the games begin. And I've once again highlighted this section for emphasis on how the games exactly work.

[00:31:21]And I'm going to write read out this annotation. It's basically what I've already discussed. Hamish does not appear because he is avoiding the memory of Llewella's death. And like I said, Susan Collins probably knew about that.

[00:31:31]Added this line, "Where is Hamish?"

[00:31:33]Anyway, after she added the background of Hamage into like her notes somewhere and maybe she got the idea for Sunrise and the Reaping around when she was writing the scene or reediting this scene before it was published. The tributes from one ride out in a chariot pulled by snow white horses. They look so beautiful. Spray painted silver in tasteful tunics glittering with jewels.

[00:31:54]District 1 makes luxury items for the capital. You can hear the roar of the crowd. They are always favorites.

[00:32:01]District 2 gets into a position to follow them. In no time at all, we are approaching the door and I can see that between the overcast sky and evening hour, the light is turning gray. The tributes from district 11 are just rolling out when S appears with a lighted torch. And I wonder if this turning gray like Lucy Gray protecting them during the tribute parade. I don't know. It wasn't there on purpose. But I'm like, well, maybe now that we've had we have the ballot of song and snakes, maybe we can interpret it a little differently, but that's not what Susan Collins would have intended. But I'm just like, maybe it's a little bit of a tidbit. It's a fun thing that we can think about. Here we go then, he says.

[00:32:36]And before we can react, he sets our capes on fire. I gasp, waiting for the heat, but there is only a faint tickling sensation. SA climbs up before us and ignites our hairdressers. He lets out a sigh of relief. It works. No, he didn't.

[00:32:49]He definitely didn't think that it would work. That's kind of unnerving that he lit lit up that fire without knowing for sure it did work. Uh and he if he didn't if it didn't work, he would definitely be punished for a disaster happening during the tribute parade. And like I said, they have headdresses. In the movies, they do not have headdresses. In the illustrated version, though, they do have they are presented with headdresses, which I think is a really nice little uh difference that they have there. I I like the idea of the headdresses, and in the illustrated version, it looks quite cool. Then he gently tucks a hand under my chin.

[00:33:24]Remember, heads high, smiles. They're going to love you. Sinner jumps off the chariot and has one last idea. He shouts something up at us, but the music drowns him out. He shouts again and gestures.

[00:33:34]What's he saying? I asked Peter for the first time. I look at him and realize that ablaze with the fake flames, he is dazzling. And I must be, too. I think he said for us to hold hands, says Peter.

[00:33:46]unites the districts against the capital. The rebellion is already plotting. SA definitely knew what he was doing. He was plotting for the rebellion and he was plotting to unite the districts one step at a time and this is when it starts. He grabs my right hand in his left and we look to SA for confirmation. He nods and gives a thumbs up and that's the last thing I see before we enter the city. This is also different in the movies. Peter is the one who decides for them to hold hands because it look good. uh and Peter's essentially the one doing the rebel act of uniting the districts but in this sense sinner is actually the person starting that rebel act of uniting the districts. So we see that from just a different character in the books compared to the movies. The crowd's initial alarm at our appearance quickly ch changes to cheers and shouts of district 12. Every head is turned our way pulling the focus from three chariots ahead of us. At first, I'm frozen, but then I catch sight of us on a large television screen, and I am flawed by how breathtaking we look. In the deepening twilight, the fire light illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire of the flowing capes. SA was right about the minimal makeup. We both look more attractive, but utterly recognizable. Now, um makeup represents when Katniss is acting her acting true to herself. So when she doesn't have makeup on, she's acting more like herself. When she does have makeup on, she has it like on her face.

[00:35:11]When they the capital is trying to conceal who she really is, trying to conceal the rebellion. Makeup is only really used when Katniss is trying they're trying to cover up who Katniss really is. We see that she actually has uh makeup on when she's in District 13 and they're originally shooting the propos that don't work before she ends up in District 8. and she has a full face of makeup on. And I think it's someone I don't remember which character. I think maybe it's Bogs in the movies, but it's not Bogs in the books. It says to get rid of the makeup on her face because she looks 30 when she's just like 17. So, um, and yeah, when when she's wearing makeup in this instance and in District 13, it's covering up who Katniss truly is and the rebel the rebellious nature that Cannice has. So, the fact that she doesn't have makeup on at this point is very indicative of the point of her being her true self and acting rebellious.

[00:35:59]Remember, heads high, smiles. They're going to love you. I hear Senn's voice in my head. I lift my chin a bit higher, put on my most winning smile and wave with my free hand. I'm glad now I have Peter to clutch for balance. He is so steady, solid as rock. As I gain confidence, I actually blow a few kisses to the crowd. The people of the capital are going nuts, sharing us with flowers, shouting our names, our first names, which they have bothered to find on the program. The pounding music, the cheers, the admiration work their way into my blood. And I can't suppress my excitement. Sinner has given me a great advantage. No one will forget me. Not my look, not my name. Katniss, the girl who was on fire. I've said the first appearance of the girl on fire. I'm actually a liar because it's not the first appearance of the girl on fire. I actually know that countness, the girl who was on fire, it was said by SA earlier. I'm obviously I've I've annotated wrong. I'm still like learning how to annotate. So that's what ends up happening. The first appearance of Girl on Fire, but it's at least the first point where Katniss refers to herself as the girl on fire as well. For the first time, I feel a flicker of hope rising up in me. Surely there must be one sponsor willing to take me on. And with a little extra help, some food, the right weapon, why should I count myself out of the games? And she has some hope, some hope of surviving, which SA has allowed her to have. Someone throws me a red rose, which is actually a very interesting reference to snow since it is white roses that he always uses, but as we know, like it's always white roses, but in the battle of Song Birds and Snakes, at times he actually has a red rose as well. I catch it, give it a delicate sniff, and blow a kiss back in the general direction of the giver. A hundred hands reach up to catch my kiss as if it were a real and tangible thing.

[00:37:42]Katniss. Katniss. I can hear my name being called from all sides. Everyone wants my kisses. It's not until we enter the city circle that I realize I must have completely stopped the circulation in Peter's hand. That's how tightly I've been holding it. I look down at our linked fingers as I loosen my grasp, but he regains his grip on me. "No, don't let go of me," he says. The fire light flickers off his blue eyes. "Please, I might fall out of this thing." "Okay," I say. So, I keep holding on, but I can't help feeling strange about the way S has linked us together. It's not really fair to present us as a team and then lock us into the arena to kill each other. Then I've written an annotation about one of the highlighted parts. Peter is genuinely being emotional and vulnerable. Katniss and Peter swapping gender roles here that he's always a very emotional person and Katniss so much is not. And I think it's something that's very wellnown a part of the series is that they swap gender roles and it's a very it was very interesting for the time period. Not so much now since we know a lot about it. Nowadays that the trope is used quite often but this was very new for the time period during 2008 when we didn't see so much of like the gender swap roles that the emotionally uh the emotional person emotionally forward person is usually the woman but at this point it's Peter and then Katniss who was more of like the strength uh brute strength uh and not as as emotional as Peter. She it was that was typically at the time for the male role. The 12 chariots fill the loop of the city circle on the buildings that surround the circle. Every window is packed with the most prestigious citizens of the capital. Our horses pull our chariot right up to President Snow's mansion and we come to a halt. The music ends with a flourish. The president, a small thin man with paper white hair, gives the official welcome from a balcony above us. This is very interesting, this description of the president since I believe Oh no. So Snow actually is described in the Ballot of Songbirds and Snakes as his whole generation of people. His growth was stunted due to the lack of food during the Dark Days War. So they have like stunted growth. So the fact that he's small and thin, he looks quite different in the movie. So my like wires get crossed when it comes to his appearance.

[00:39:52]But he's a small thin man because his growth was stunted as a child. The president, a small thin man with paper white hair, gives the official welcome from a balcony above us. It is traditional to cut away to the faces of the tributes during the speech, but I can see on the screen that we are getting way more than our share of air time. The darker it becomes, the more difficult it is to take your eyes off our flickering. And then I have an annotation here as well. They're to taking attention away from the president. In dark times, Katniss and Peter are that flicker spark slash like a flicker slash spark of hope during the rebellion. So they're literally at this point representing that flicker of hope in in for the rebellion against the president. They're taking away attention from the president because that they're that flicker of hope that the districts needed this whole time. So it's the very beginning of the rebellion, this whole tribute parade. When the national anthem plays, they do make effort to do a quick cut around each pair of tributes, but the camera holds on District 12 charot as it parades around the circle one final time and disappears into the training center. The the doors have only just shut behind us when we're engulfed by the prep teams who are nearly unintelligible as they babble out praise. As I glance around, I notice a lot of the other tributes are shooting us dirty looks, which confirms what I've suspected. We've literally outshone them all. Then S and Porsche are there helping us down from the chariot, carefully removing our flaming capes and headdresses. Porsche extinguishes them with some kind of spray from a canister.

[00:41:19]Now, is this like literally an extinguisher? So, she's using that and Cace doesn't recognize it because she doesn't know what it was. She's never seen it before. I realize I'm still glued to Peter and force my stiff fingers to open. We both massage our hands. Thanks for keeping hold of me. I was getting a little shaky there, says Peter. I It didn't show. I tell him. I'm sure no one noticed. I'm sure they didn't notice anything but you. You should wear flames more often, he says.

[00:41:44]They suit you. That's him flirting.

[00:41:46]That's him actually genuinely complimenting Katniss. and she doesn't take it as a compliment, sufface to say.

[00:41:52]And then he gives me a smile that seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness. That unexpected warmth rushes through me. A warning bell goes off in my head. Don't be so stupid.

[00:42:01]Peter's planning how to kill you, I remind myself. No, because he likes you, Katniss. Oh my god, he is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is. But because two can play at this game, my god, Katniss. I stand on tiptoe and kiss his cheek right on his bruise. Peter is being genuine. Probably thinking about how Katniss kissed him on the cheek.

[00:42:22]He's probably going, "Oh my god, Katniss kissed me on the cheek." And this whole time Katniss is like, "Well, no, he's plotting to kill me. This wasn't genuine." And he's like, there's shyness here because she lit he literally is like flirting with Katniss, genuinely com complimenting her, and he's maybe not even flirting. He just likes her.

[00:42:39]And he's like, "You look you look nice.

[00:42:41]I think you look so pretty, Katniss."

[00:42:43]Katniss completely playing a different game because she is because she's so clueless that she doesn't know that he's genuinely complimenting her and that's so frustrating. Katniss, why do you have trust issues? But it's so cute that Peter actually ends up stating that he thinks that she looks nice. It suits her. He's genuinely complimenting her and Katniss is just like, "No, he's going to kill me." He's plotting. He's plotting. I wish I could read this for the first time and like I can't even remember. I was 9 years old when I read The Hungs for the first time. I don't remember what my initial reaction to all of this was and all the plot twist that um the plot twist that Peter actually ends up liking Katniss. I wonder if I read it for the first time at this age that I'd realize that he actually liked Katniss. I think I'd catch on pretty easy. But I I at least I like to think I'm that smart. And this this here such a cute little genuine compliment from Peter. And Katniss is like, "No, he's going to kill me." So yeah. Anyway, we're up to chapter 6 for next episode.
