[00:01:32]You did not follow a smell you could not place. And you did not, under any circumstance, answer back to a knock you had not invited. He had been raised in a cedar plank house along the bend of the Trinity River, the youngest of four. His father had been a salmon fisherman and a maker of dugout canoes, and his mother had been a basket weaver, whose work the traders from the coast used to come up the river specifically to buy.

[00:02:00]Oo had grown up with the smell of split cedar and the sound of the river over the gravel beds, and he had begun walking the country alone with his father's permission while he was still very young. By the time he was a young man, he could read a deer trail from 40 paces. He could tell you which way a person had walked by looking at the bend of a single fern frond. By the age of 20, he had been hired by his first survey party out of the coast, and from then until the autumn we are speaking of, he had spent more nights of his life sleeping under the trees than under any roof. He had a wife by then. Her name was Kintaway. It was the two of them, no one else in the house, and they had built a small life together in a wood-frame house at the lower end of the valley, with a garden that Kintaway tended and a smokehouse that Oo kept stocked through the autumn runs.

[00:02:57]When he came home from a survey job, she would set out a bowl of fish stew and a piece of bread on the table, and she would not ask him any questions about where he had been. She had learned early in their marriage that he did not like to talk about the country until at least a day after he had come back into it. He needed time, he had told her once, to put his other life back on, the life with the door and the floor and the bed and the bowl on the table. Kentaway had understood she had given him the day. He had been hired that October by a timber company out of Eureka. They were scouting a stretch of old growth somewhere east of the bald hills, a parcel the company had bought on paper but had never actually walked. The foreman, a heavy set man named Auguran Brassel, needed someone who could read the country and tell him whether the trees were worth what had been paid for them. Auguran had been told by a man at the land office that there was only one tracker in three counties worth hiring for that kind of work. And that tracker was Oayo. The pay was $3 a day, good money, in 1923 for a man with a wife back home and a roof that had started to sag at the eaves. So Oo took the job. He told Kerway about it over supper the night before he left. She listened without saying much. When he had finished, she asked him only one question. She asked him which part of the country the timber company wanted surveyed. He told her.

[00:04:33]She thought for a moment and then she said, "You have not been east of the Bald Hills in many years." He said, "No, he had not." She said, "Your grandfather did not like that country." He said he knew. She said, "Your grandfather had reasons." He said, "Yes, his grandfather had reasons." She did not ask him not to go. She knew better than to ask him not to do work that they needed the money for. But she walked him to the door the next morning, and she put a hand against his cheek, and she said, "Come back the way you went." He told her he would.

[00:05:08]They went in on a Monday morning, the first week of October, just the two of them. Auguran carried the maps and a Winchester rifle he did not really know how to use. Oo carried a pack with seven days of food, a bed roll, a steel knife his father had given him, and a small leather pouch tied at his belt that he never explained and never opened in front of anyone. The country they entered that morning is hard to describe to anyone who has never stood inside it.

[00:05:39]You walk into a redwood grove, and the first thing that happens is the sound gets eaten. Whatever you were carrying in your ears from the world outside, the forest takes it. The wind goes flat.

[00:05:52]Your own breath sounds louder than your boots. The light comes down in green columns through the canopy, and the rest of the floor sits in a kind of permanent dusk, even at noon. The trees themselves are not what you've been told. They are bigger. They are older, and they hold a stillness that is not peaceful. It is watching. That is the only honest word for it. [00:07:21]There is something about knowing a voice is reaching a porch in Tennessee, a kitchen in Sa Paulo, a parked truck somewhere outside Vancouver that makes the telling of these things feel less lonely. So tell me where you are and then we'll keep going. On the third day, Oo woke before Augurin the way he always did and walked a small distance from camp to wash his face in the creek. The light was the pale gray of early morning, and the forest was doing what it always did at that hour, which is not very much. The ravens had not yet started. The deer had not yet moved.

[00:08:02]There was only the creek and the slow drip of dew from the higher branches. He knelt by the water, and he saw the print. It was on the soft bank of the creek, about 4 ft from where he had laid his hands, a single track pressed deep into the silt. The water had not yet risen to wash it away, which meant it was fresh, made sometime in the last hour, maybe less. The track was the shape of a foot, not a bear, not a man.

[00:08:30]It was wider than a man's foot by nearly half and longer by perhaps 4 in. The toes were clear. There were five of them. There was a heel deep and broad.

[00:08:40]The arch of the foot pressed firmly into the silt, the way a heavy body presses, the way a creature that has walked a long distance presses when it stops to drink. Oo did not move for a long time.

[00:08:57]He was a tracker, and a tracker does not feel before he understands. The depth of the print told him the creature was heavy, heavier than him. Heavier, he judged, than two of him. The angle of the toes told him it had been walking upright, not on all fours. The stride, when he stood and followed the prince back along the bank, told him it had not been running. It had been walking slowly as if it too had come down for water. He found seven prints in total before the trail turned uphill into the brush and was lost in a tangle of redwood roots.

[00:09:36]He sat back on his heels for a long while. Then he got up, walked back to camp, and woke Augura.

[00:09:44]He did not tell him what he had seen. He told him only that they should not survey the eastern side of the creek that day. He told him the ground was unstable there. He told him the company would not be happy if a foreman broke his leg on the third morning. Aguran grumbled but did not argue. He was a man who trusted his tracker, which was the only reason he had survived as a foreman as long as he had. They surveyed the western side of the creek that day, and that night around the fire, Oo did not sleep. There is a thing the Hoopa people speak of when they speak of it at all.

The Urak have their word, the Karuk have theirs, the Hoopa have theirs. They are not exactly the same beings, but they share a country, and they share a silence. Oo had heard the stories all his life. His grandfather, an old man named Tahanowit, had once told him that the wild ones were not animals. They were not spirits either.

A people, the grandfather had said, a people who had chosen the forest before any of the others did, and who had stayed in it long after the rest of the world had gone its noisy way. You do not hunt them, the grandfather had said. You do not follow them, and you do not, under any circumstance, look one in the eye, because if you do, it remembers you. and what it remembers it can find again. Oo had nodded politely at his grandfather.

[00:11:39]He had been a young man at the time. He had not believed a word of it. He had been a hunter then, and a hunter sees the world a certain way. The world to a hunter is full of things that bleed.

[00:11:52]When you cut them and run when you chase them, that is the entire world. There is no room in it for old men's warnings.

[00:11:59]But now he was 38, and he had seen the print by the creek, and he was sitting up by a small fire in a redwood grove in the dark, and he was beginning to understand his grandfather had not been talking nonsense.

[00:12:14]The second night passed without incident, the third night the same.

[00:12:18]Ogarini slept hard and snored and slept some more.

[00:12:23]Oo dozed in fragments and listened. He heard nothing he could not name. Owls, wind, a fox once, somewhere on the slope, the ordinary noises of a forest that was behaving the way a forest should. On the fifth morning they broke camp and moved deeper. The country east of the creek climbed steeply into a ridge that the maps named only with a number. And beyond the ridge was a valley the company had bought entirely on the strength of a single aerial photograph taken from a biplane two summers earlier.

[00:12:58]No one from the company had ever stood inside it. That was the parcel Auguran had been sent to evaluate. That was where the money was. They went up the ridge slowly. The redwoods on that climb were the biggest Oo had ever seen, and he had seen big ones. Several of them were broad enough at the base that a man on horseback could have ridden through a hollowedout one without ducking his hat.

[00:13:24]The light grew dimmer as they climbed the canopy. denser, the silence heavier.

[00:13:30]About halfway up, Oo stopped at a tree that had something he did not at first understand. At the height of his own chest, the bark of the redwood had been worn smooth in a patch about 3 ft wide.

[00:13:44]The patch was old. The wood underneath had darkened with weather. It was the kind of wear a deer makes when it rubs the velvet from its antlers. Except no deer in those woods stood as tall as this patch sat. And the patch was not on one side of the trunk the way a deer would rub. It went all the way around the tree as though something tall had walked past it many times on many ears, and the walking had been close enough to the trunk that whatever had walked past it had brushed against it casually. the way a man brushes a hand along a wall in a hallway he uses every day. Oo did not point the patch out to Ogiri. He let his hand rest on it for a moment, then took his hand off and walked on. Higher up he passed two more redwoods with the same kind of wear at the same kind of height.

[00:14:39]The patches were not signs. They were the marks of habit. The bark of those particular trees had been rubbed smooth by a body that walked the same path year after year, generation after generation, the way a creek wears a stone, smooth not by trying to, but by passing. He did not point those out either. They reached the top of the ridge a little before noon, and then they came down the other side. The valley below was a bowl, steep on three sides, gentler on the fourth, drained by a single thin creek that pulled at the bottom into something that was almost a small lake and not quite.

[00:15:20]The trees in that bowl were ancient, even by redwood standards, ancient. Oo had walked under trees that were 2,000 years old, and these were older. He could feel it. There is a quality to very old wood that a tracker learns to feel before he learns to name. The bowl was perfectly silent. No birds, no squirrels, no deer trails on the slopes, no fish rising in the pool, nothing.

[00:15:50]Joseo had walked into many silences in his life. The forest goes quiet for many reasons. a cougar in the area, a storm coming, a wildfire somewhere on the next ridge sending the animals down. He knew the silences and what they meant. This was not any of those silences. The animals had not fled this place. They had never been here. There were no old deer beds in the moss. There were no game trails coming down the slopes to drink. There were no claw marks on any redwood at the standard heights bears leave them. There was no scat anywhere on the forest floor. The bowl had been emptied of the things that normally filled a forest, and it had been emptied for a long time, years, maybe longer.

[00:16:37]Auguran did not notice. Auguran was already counting board feet in his head.

[00:16:42]Oo noticed. He stopped at the edge of the bowl and did not go further. Aguran walked 20 paces in and turned and called for him, and Oio said quietly that they would camp at the top of the ridge that night and come down in the morning.

[00:16:58]Aguran grumbled again, but again he did not argue. He turned and walked back up to where Oo stood, and they made camp on the lip of the bowl, not inside it. That was the night it began. I want to slow down here because what follows is the part that Oo never told anyone for the first 18 years after he came back. He did not tell his wife. He did not tell his cousins. He did not tell the company. He told the foreman eventually in a letter, but the foreman was an honest man and burned the letter after reading it because he understood what kind of story would ruin a man's life if it got loose in the wrong town. The story was finally written down in 1941 in a notebook kept by a folklorist out of Berkeley named Pelisand Row, who had spent two summers in the Hoopa Valley collecting accounts from elders who had begun to feel that some things ought not to die with them. Oo was 56 by then. He was tired. He had buried his wife the previous winter. He had begun to feel he told Pelisand that he did not want to be the last person on earth who remembered what had happened in the bowl. So he sat down at a kitchen table and he talked and Pelisand wrote and the notebook went into a university archive where it sat largely unread for half a century. This is from the notebook. The first sound came a little after full dark. They had eaten. The fire was low. Ogarin was already asleep on his bed roll, breathing the deep, even breath of a man who had walked all day, and felt nothing wrong with the world.

[00:18:42]Oo was lying on his back, looking up at the slivers of black sky between the redwood branches, when he heard it, a knock, one single deliberate knock from somewhere down in the bowl below them.

[00:18:55]The sound of something heavy striking the trunk of a tree. Wood on wood, solid and slow and unhurried, the way a man knocks on a door when he is not in a rush and knows the door will eventually open. Oo did not sit up. He did not move at all. He listened. A breath later, the knock came again from a different tree farther to the east, maybe a hundred yards from the first one. Then nothing.

[00:19:21]He lay there for what he later said felt like an hour, but was probably much less. He counted his own heartbeats and tried to keep them even. Ogarand slept on, oblivious. The fire popped once, settled, popped again, and then from a third location farther still, came a sound that was not a knock. It was a call. He could not, when he later tried to describe it to Pelisand, find the right words. It was not a howl. It was not a yell. It was not the bellow of a bull elk or the cough of a cougar. It was a vocalization, that is the closest word he could find, and it had something in it that no animal he had ever heard in those woods had ever made. It went up and then down. It held a note. It came from a chest larger than any chest Oo had ever measured. And then from a fourth location, even farther, something answered it. Two of them, maybe more. He lay there and counted. He thought he heard four distinct voices scattered across the bowl below him, calling to one another in long, slow exchanges. The calls came at intervals. They did not overlap. They were taking turns.

[00:20:38]Whatever they were saying, they were saying it to each other, and they were doing it in a pattern that had structure to it. The hairs on the back of his neck rose, he said. He had felt fear before.

[00:20:50]This was not fear. This was something older than fear. This was the body remembering a thing the mind had forgotten. He stayed very still. There is a particular quality, he later told Pelisand, to lying on your back in a forest at night and knowing that the silence around you is not empty. A forest at night is normally full of small sounds, the shift of leaves, the settling of small animals into their burrows, the creek of a branch finding its night position. Even when you cannot hear any one of those sounds clearly, you can feel them around you. the way you can feel a crowd in a room you have just entered with your eyes closed. The bowl had none of those sounds. The bowl had only the calls and the spaces between them. The spaces were not empty.

[00:21:41]The spaces were full of listening. He could feel from where he lay on his bed roll the attention of several bodies somewhere out in the dark, holding their breath between each exchange, listening for the next one the same way he was. He could not see them. There was no fire light reaching that far down into the bowl. There were no eyes glinting back.

[00:22:04]There was nothing visible at all. There was only the certainty, which sat in his chest like a swallowed stone, that he was lying inside an arrangement that had been made before he arrived. The calls went on for nearly 20 minutes by his count, and then they stopped. The bowl returned to its perfect listening silence. Ogarin had not stirred. The fire had burned down to coals. Oo did not sleep that night. He sat up. He kept the small leather pouch at his belt where his hand could find it. He waited for dawn. Let me take a breath here before what comes next. [00:23:02]Let's go back to the story. Dawn came late under those trees. The light that filtered down to the camp was the colorless gray that the redwoods make in October when even the sun has trouble convincing the canopy to let it through.

[00:23:17]Algurin woke and stretched and built up the fire and asked Oo if he had slept well. Oo said he had slept fine. He did not mention the knocks. He did not mention the calls. He had already decided hours earlier that Ogarin was the kind of man who would refuse to leave the bowl if he knew. Auguran would want to see them. Auguran would want at the very least to walk down with the rifle and prove to himself that whatever it was could be made afraid of him. Oo had no intention of letting that happen.

[00:23:52]He told Ugarin over breakfast that the bowl was no good for timber. He said the trees were too far gone. He said the soil was rotten under them and the roots were unstable and the company would lose more in men and equipment than they would ever recover in lumber. None of that was true. The trees were perfect.

[00:24:12]The trees were the finest stand of old growth Oo had ever stood inside. But Oo had made his decision somewhere between the third knock and the first call. And his decision was that the bull was not for cutting. Augur did not believe him.

[00:24:28]Augur was no fool. He had worked with Oo on three previous surveys, and he knew when his tracker was telling him the truth, and when his tracker was telling him something else. He looked at Oo across the fire that morning for a long, quiet moment, and then he said in a voice that was not unkind that he would like to walk down into the bowl himself before they left, just to see. He would not mark a single tree. He just wanted to stand inside it. Oo said no. Aguran said he was the foreman and the foreman walked where he wanted to walk. Oo said very quietly that he would not go down with him. They argued for the better part of an hour. Oo did not raise his voice. He never raised his voice. He simply repeated in slightly different ways that the bowl was not a place for them to be and that he would not go into it and that if Auguran went into it, he would go alone. Auguran in the end went alone. He took the rifle. He took his maps. He took a canteen and a knife and a measuring chain. He left his pack at the camp. He told Oo he would be back by midday and that the two of them would have a long conversation about the future of their working relationship once he was. Then he started down the slope into the bowl. Joseo watched him go. He sat at the edge of the lip, and he watched Algare's red wool coat moving down through the green columns of the trees, getting smaller and smaller, until the coat went around the trunk of a particularly large redwood, and did not come out the other side. Oo waited.

[00:26:13]For the first hour, he simply sat. He kept his eyes on the place where Ogaran had disappeared. He listened. The bowl was as silent as it had been the night before when the calls had finally stopped. He did not hear a rifle shot.

[00:26:29]He did not hear a man's voice. He did not hear a man's boots on dry leaves or a man's pack swinging against a man's back or any other sound a man makes when he is walking through a forest and counting trees. In the second hour, he stood up and walked the lip of the bowl.

[00:26:48]He went a 100 paces north and then he came back. And he went a 100 paces south and then he came back again.

[00:26:56]From every angle the bowl looked the same. The trees stood in their silent columns. The thin creek pulled at the bottom. The light came down green and cold. There was no movement. In the third hour he sat down again. He took out a piece of dried meat from his pack and he ate it. Because a tracker eats when he can, not when he is hungry. He drank from his canteen. He waited.

[00:27:23]Midday came. Our did not come back. The afternoon wore on. The light shifted.

[00:27:29]The shadows grew longer. The bull below was as silent as it had been at dawn. No knocks, no calls, nothing. By late afternoon, Oo had made another decision.

[00:27:41]He had decided that he would go down after Agaria, not because he wanted to.

[00:27:47]He did not want to. He had said he would not, and he had meant it. But Agarin had a wife and two grown sons in Eureka, and Oo could not walk back out of that country alone without at least having tried. He left his pack at the camp. He took his knife. He took the small leather pouch at his belt. He did not take a rifle because he did not own one.

[00:28:11]He started down into the bowl. The first thing he noticed as he descended was the smell. It had not been there in the morning. He was sure of that. It was a smell he had encountered once before in his life when he was 19 years old and had come across the carcass of a black bear that had died of an infected wound and been left to lie for a week in summer heat. It was a smell that the body recognizes before the mind names it. But this smell was not coming from a carcass. He checked. He walked slowly and he checked. There was no body. There was no kill. There was only the smell, and it was everywhere in the bowl, hanging in the still air between the redwoods. Thicker the deeper he went. It was a living smell, he said. That was the phrase he used when he finally told it. A living smell. as if something very large with a body that did not wash and a diet that was not clean had passed through every part of that bowl and left its presence behind in the air. There was something else in the smell, too, not just the rankness of an unwashed body and a meateater's breath. There was an undertone of damp earth. The way a den smells in the spring when the snow is gone, and the things that lived in it through the winter have started to come and go again. There was an undertone of cedar smoke, faint and old, as though something far down in the bowl somewhere out of sight, had used a fire at some point, although not recently, and there was an undertone he could not place at all. something that did not belong to any animal he had ever tracked, and that did not belong to any human village he had ever stood inside. Something its own. He found Ojaran's first footprint about 200 yd down. He followed it.

[00:30:08]Ogaran had walked carefully and slowly, which was good. The trail was easy to read. He had stopped several times, presumably to look at trees, and Oo could see where his boots had pivoted in the soft earth. About 400 yards in, the footprints stopped. They did not gradually fade out. They did not turn back. They stopped midstride.

[00:30:34]As if Ogaran had taken a step forward, set his boot down, and then never taken another step in any direction.

[00:30:41]crouched at the last print and looked around. There was no second set of tracks. There was no struggle in the earth. There was no blood. There was no torn cloth. There was nothing on any tree. There was nothing in any bush. The forest around the last footprint was as undisturbed as the forest 20 ft away from it. Agurin had simply, by all evidence, been there and then not been there. Oo stood up very slowly and as he stood he became aware with the awareness that a tracker has and other men do not that he was being watched. He did not turn his head. He did not look around.

[00:31:21]He kept his eyes on the ground on the last footprint and he stood as still as he could. The watching, he later said, came from a single point slightly behind him, slightly to his right, slightly elevated, as if something large were standing in the undergrowth, or perhaps on a low rise of root, no more than 15 or 20 paces away. He could feel the weight of its attention on the back of his neck. He could hear very faintly the slow, even sound of its breathing. He thought in that moment about his grandfather Tanowit and the warning the old man had given him a long time ago.

[00:32:02]Do not look one in the eye because what it remembers it can find again. Oo did not look. He stood at the last footprint for what he later estimated was perhaps 3 minutes. The breathing behind him did not change. It did not come closer. It did not move away. It simply continued, slow and even, the breath of something that was not in any hurry. He noticed, as the minutes passed, that other things had started to clarify themselves. The smell had grown stronger, because whatever was breathing was the source of it, and the source was very close. He could feel the warmth of its body, not as heat exactly, but as a kind of pressure on the air behind him, the way a person can sense with eyes closed when someone has come to stand near a doorway. He could hear beneath the breathing the small sound of weight shifting on the forest floor, a foot adjusting, a hand perhaps resting on a branch, some tiny considered movement that meant the thing was alive and aware and choosing moment by moment not to come any closer. That was the part that stayed with him, the choosing. The thing behind him was making a choice. It could have closed the distance between them in two strides. It could have done whatever it wished. It was not doing anything. It was breathing and it was watching and it was waiting to see what Oo would do.

[00:33:34]Then very slowly Oo did three things.

[00:33:38]First he reached for the small leather pouch at his belt and he opened it.

[00:33:44]Inside the pouch was a small handful of tobacco that his grandfather had given him before the old man died with instructions that it was to be used only once and only when Oo was certain that he needed it. The grandfather had not specified what kind of need Oo had asked at the time. The old man had looked at him for a long moment and then said simply, "You will know." He had pressed the pouch into Oo's palm, and he had closed OO's fingers around it, and he had said nothing more about it. That had been 21 years before the autumn of 1923.

[00:34:21]The pouch had ridden on Oo's belt every day of those 21 years, in the woods, and in the town, at his wedding, and at his father's funeral, and he had never once had cause to open it. He took the tobacco out and he laid it carefully on the ground at the last footprint beside where Ojaran's boot had pressed into the earth. Second, he spoke in hoopa a few words that Pelisand later asked him to translate and which Oo politely refused to translate. He said only that the words were a recognition, a courtesy, the kind of thing one says to a neighbor when one has wandered onto his land without meaning to and wishes to leave without giving offense. Third, he turned very slowly and he walked back the way he had come. He did not run. Running, he later said, would have been the worst thing he could have done. A tracker knows that you do not run from a thing that has decided not to follow you. You walk. You walk like a man who has remembered an errand and is going home to attend to it. You walk like you have business elsewhere, and the business is more interesting than anything behind you. He walked. The breathing behind him did not follow. He climbed back up to the lip of the bowl. He reached the camp. He shouldered his pack and Auguran's pack, and he started back along the ridge the way they had come.

[00:35:47]He did not stop walking until he was three miles away. He camped that night on a small rise where he could see the sky in every direction. He did not build a fire. He sat with his back against a fallen log, and he watched the dark, and he did not sleep. The forest around him that night, the ordinary forest, the forest that was not the bowl, sounded the way a forest should sound. An owl called twice from somewhere down the slope. A small animal moved through the brush behind him at one point, and he could tell from the sound of it that it was a fox or a martin, no larger. The wind came up at some point in the small hours, and shifted the higher branches, and the redwoods, which can creek softly when they sway, did their slow creaking above him. He listened to all of it gratefully. It was the first ordinary forest sound he had heard since the morning he had found the print by the creek. He had not until that moment fully understood how much weight he had been carrying simply by being inside a quiet that was wrong. The ordinary sounds came back over him like warm water. He sat in them and let them rinse him and did not sleep. The next morning he came down out of the country and he walked all day. And at sundown he reached the road. And at midnight he reached the town. And at dawn he was in the office of the timber company in Eureka telling Auggurin superiors that the foreman had been lost in a fall and that the body could not be recovered. He gave them the maps. He gave them the rifle. He gave them Augguran's canteen and his pack. He told them very carefully that he had searched and could not find a trace. He said that the country east of the ridge was unsafe and should not be entered by any company crew. He said this in the same flat voice he used to tell them that he would not be available for any further survey work that season. They paid him the $3 a day he was owed. They tried to pay him more as a condolence for the foreman. He refused the extra money. He went home to his wife in the Hoopa Valley, and he did not speak of the bowl for 18 years.

[00:38:06]Kintaway met him at the door the way she always met him. She had a bowl of stew already on the table. She did not ask him about the survey. She did not ask him about the foreman, whose name had not yet reached the valley. She set the bread down beside the bowl, and she sat across from him, and she watched him eat. And after he had eaten, she ran a hand over the back of his head, the way she used to do when they were younger, and she said, "You came back tired." He said, "Yes." She said, "You came back different." He looked up at her. He did not answer for a long time. Then he said, "Yes." and he did not say anything more about it that night or the next or in any of the nights that followed for the next 18 years.

[00:38:52]Kintaway, who had been raised by women who knew how to wait, did not press him.

[00:38:57]She had her own grandmother's way of knowing when a man had walked into something larger than himself, and her own grandmother's instructions for what to do about it, which were to feed him, and to let him sleep, and to keep her questions in a small box inside her chest until the day he was ready to open them. The day, as it turned out, never came in her lifetime. For the first month after he came back, Oo did not go into the woods at all. This was in itself a thing the people around him noticed. He worked on the smokehouse. He repaired the roof. He helped a neighbor re-shingle a barn. He took on small carpentry jobs in the lower valley. He spent his evenings on the porch looking up at the ridges to the east and saying nothing. Eventually he went back into the woods. He had to. The smokehouse needed wood and the river needed nets.

[00:39:54]and a man with his particular skills could not really live in the valley without spending some of his days in the country above it. But he chose his country carefully after that. He stayed near the river. He took work only in places he already knew. He turned down two more offers from timber companies in the years between 1923 and 1930, both of which would have paid him very well, and both of which would have taken him into parts of the country he had decided he would not enter again. Kintaway died in the winter of 1940 of a fever that came up out of nowhere in the second week of January and was gone with her by the end of the month. Oo buried her in the cemetery at the lower end of the valley beside her mother under a piece of cedar he carved himself. He stayed in the woodframe house through that spring alone and he sat on the porch in the evenings and looked up at the ridges to the east and he began slowly to feel that the silence inside him was no longer a thing he could carry the rest of the way by himself. The folklorist Pelisand Rowe came up the valley in the summer of 1941 looking for old men who would talk. She had been told by the postmaster at Hoopa that there was a tracker at the lower end of the valley who knew more than he had ever said. She came to his porch one morning with a kettle of coffee as a gift, and she sat with him for several hours, and she did not ask him about anything in particular. She told him about her own grandmother, who had been from a village in Britany, and had carried her own warnings about her own forests. She told him about the notebook she kept. She told him she was not in any hurry. He let her come back the next week and the week after, and by the end of August, he had begun slowly to tell her things. When she asked him finally in late September why he had agreed to let her write them down, Oo took a long time before he answered. He said that the timber company had gone bankrupt during the depression and had sold off all of its old parcels. He said that the bowl, as far as he knew, had never been logged. He said that he had walked back into that part of the country exactly once in the summer of 1936 with his cousin on a hunting trip. They had stayed well clear of the ridge, but on the second night of that trip, while they were camped a long way off, he had heard from somewhere east of them a single knock. The cousin's name was Want.

[00:42:44]He was four years younger than Oo, a wiry man with a quick laugh and a good rifle. He had been after Oo for years to come out hunting with him in the deep country, and Oo, in the summer of 36, had finally agreed. They had gone in for elk. They had picked a stretch of country well to the south of the ridge where Ogaren had been lost. Oo had drawn the route on the map himself and had given Want three different reasons why they would not be going north of a particular creek. Want had not pressed him. On the second night they had camped beside a small spring under a stand of ancient furs. Want had cooked. They had eaten. They had spoken in the easy way of men who have known each other since they were boys about wives and about weather and about the recent troubles in town.

[00:43:39]Want had gone to sleep around 10. Oo had lain awake as he always did the first nights out listening to the country settle into itself. The knock came a little after midnight. It came from the east from the long blue distance over the ridges from the country he had told War they were avoiding one slow and deliberate wood on wood the sound of something heavy striking the trunk of a tree. His cousin had not heard it. His cousin had been asleep. Oo had not mentioned it. They had finished the hunt and gone home. But that single knock, he told Pelisand, had told him something he had not known before. It had told him that whatever lived in that bowl had not forgotten him. It had recognized that he was back in its country, and it had marked his presence the way a neighbor marks the arrival of someone he has met before. One knock, not an alarm, not a threat, just a kind of acknowledgement.

He told Pelisand that he had decided to write the account down because he was getting older and because the foreman Augguran had had a wife and two grown sons, and those sons were by then men in their 40s with families of their own, and he had begun to feel that they deserved to know, even if they would never believe him. What had really happened to their father on the ridge above the bowl in the autumn of 1923.

In his last years, he passed the same warnings on to the younger men of his community. the way his grandfather had passed them to him. And he watched their faces, and he could see in their polite nods the same disbelief he had once worn himself. He did not press them. He understood.

[00:45:55]Some things he said, "You cannot tell a person until they have walked into them on their own, and he hoped very much that none of them ever would." There is one detail in the notebook I have not mentioned yet, and I want to mention it now because it is the detail I keep coming back to. When Oo described the breathing heard behind him at the last footprint, he told Pelisand that there was something familiar about it. He could not, for a long time, place what it was. He had spent the years between 1923 and 1941 turning the memory over in his mind, trying to find the right comparison. He finally found it. The breathing, he said, sounded like the breathing of a man who is very, very old. A man who is sitting in a chair by a fire, a man who has lived through too much and has nothing left to be in a hurry about. A man who breathes the way a man breathes when he is content. That was the thing. Oo said that he could not shake. Not the size of the print by the creek, not the calls in the bowl, not the empty midstride footprint of the foreman, not the smell, not even the watching. It was the breath. Because the breath, he said, did not belong to an animal. The breath belonged to someone, and someone is a much harder thing to walk away from than something.

[00:47:20]He told Pelisand near the end of their conversations that he had thought a great deal over the years about what the wild ones were. He had tried, the way a thoughtful man will try, to find a frame for them that he could put down on the kitchen table and live with. He had considered that they might be animals that had simply not been cataloged the way the great whales were not cataloged until somebody finally went out far enough into the sea to count them. He had considered that they might be spirits the way his grandfather had used the word, although his grandfather had not really meant spirits. His grandfather had meant something for which there was no English word. He had considered that they might be a kind of people, very old, who had chosen the deep country a long time ago, and had been allowed by the world to keep it. He had finally settled, he said, on the last of these. The Wild Ones were a people. They had their territory. They had their families. They had their nights of calling to one another across a quiet bowl in the redwoods on a schedule that meant something to them and was none of his business. And they had, at least one of them, the courtesy to stand quietly behind a man who had wandered into their country, breathing the breath of an old man who has nothing to be in a hurry about, and letting that man lay down a small offering of tobacco, and turn and walk home. The foreman, Joseo said, had not been killed. He had been kept. He did not say more than that, and Pelisand did not press. Whether the keeping was kind or whether it was something else was not a thing OO wanted to speculate about on the record. When the notebook was finally read in the late 1990s by a graduate student going through the row archive at Berkeley, the student tried to find the bowl. He had the maps. He had the descriptions. He had the general region. He spent three summers walking that country with permission from the tribe and a guide from Hoopa. and he could not find it. The ridge was there, the creek was there, but the bowl, the perfect bowl of ancient redwoods with the thin pooling creek at its bottom, did not seem to be where Oo had described it. The guide, an older Hoopa man, was not surprised. He told the student that some places in that country do not always sit in the same spot. He told the student that this was not a thing he expected the student to understand. He told the student gently that he might want to consider whether he really wanted to find the bowl or whether it would be enough to know that it was somewhere. The student left the redwoods at the end of that third summer and did not return. The notebook went back into the archive, and the bowl, wherever it is, presumably still holds its silence and its perfect old trees, and whatever else has chosen to live inside it for the length of time that something can choose to live inside a place like that. If you ever find yourself in the redwood country in the far northwest corner of California, and you walk a ridge above a bowl that the maps do not seem to remember, and the bowl below you is too quiet, and the air smells of something that should not be alive, but is. The advice I would give you is the advice grandfather gave him a long time ago. Do not whistle after sundown. Do not call out names that are not your own. Do not follow a smell you cannot place. And if you hear a knock from somewhere down among the trees, slow and deliberate, wood on wood, the sound of something heavy striking the trunk of a redwood that has stood there for 2,000 years. You do not answer it.

[00:51:37]The foreman Alguran Brassel was never found. His name appears in the Eureka Timber Company records as lost in the field October of that year. His sons grew up without him. The bowl, as far as anyone can verify, has never been logged. I think about Oo's account sometimes late at night when the wind is moving in the trees outside my own house. I think about the breath. I think about what it means that the thing he heard behind him chose deliberately not to close the last 15 paces of distance between them. I think about what it must have been like to stand at that last footprint with a small handful of his grandfather's tobacco in his hand, knowing that the choice belonged entirely to whoever was breathing behind him, and knowing that there was nothing he could do with a knife or a rifle or any tool he had ever owned. That would have made any difference at all if the choice had gone the other way. And I think about the courtesy of it. The strange, unmistakable courtesy of an old breath behind a man's shoulder choosing to let him walk home. That is a thing I do not have a name for. I do not think Oo did either. I do not think his grandfather did. I do not think the language for it has been invented yet in any of the languages I happen to know.
