Wilson effectively demystifies gospel harmony by focusing on functional logic rather than rote memorization. His approach successfully transforms a technical breakdown into a masterclass on ear training and the necessity of a growth mindset.

Figuring Out Revelation 19:1 Together | Live Chord Breakdown + Improv (Live Song Challenge)Added:
All right.
This is a tutorial video for the song Hallelujah Salvation and Glory.
It's going to be done in three parts. I want to shout out the participants, the people who attempted to find the chords to this song.
>> [music] >> Particularly the section in the middle.
You have some crazy chords there. I want to show you guys what those chords are in the video. I'm also going to teach you the whole song.
You're in for a treat.
And then I'm also going to show you some harmony stuff with some improv. So, we're going to go through a lot today.
So, the first thing I want to do, the first thing I want to do is thank all of you for participating. [music] This is the process that builds your ear. The process of building your ear is not listening to to listening to me and doing a tutorial. [music] The process of building your ear is when you try to figure out things on your own.
Your ear grows that way. The ear is like a muscle and it grows the more you use it.
You're using this video to test how well you did. [music] This was for our May challenge.
I'm sending this video out to everybody.
So, if you did not um you may not understand what's [music] happening right now.
Cuz I want you to also see the process that I take with the members to help them to grow their ears.
>> [music] >> So, these are a couple people who um participated in this. I want to shout out Oliver. Want to shout out Trina.
Want to shout out Dorian, Martin, Edward, man. You guys amazing. Cordell, [music] Jonas, you made it, man. And um Colenis. I got to shout out Colenis though >> [music] >> in particular because she is somebody who's an extreme beginner and she said something that to me was so profound and it it I want you to listen to what she says.
>> Okay.
I can't Sorry, I can't play the music while we recording.
But I just These are some lyrics and it may not be sound good. It may not be perfect. It may not might be hit or miss, but I just want to show that I have been working on this.
Uh so, here we go.
>> So, listen.
>> [cheering] >> That's all I want, man. That's all I want. That's all I want.
One of the mantras that I have on my website and for the people that I'm teaching is you have to get out of the mindset that you have to be perfect.
You want to have a growth mindset, but you do not want a perfection mindset. A perfection mindset for a musician will kill you because you'll never feel like you're ready. You'll never feel like you're there and you won't do anything and you just won't You You You You You just You kind of retreat in a shell and you won't grow.
So, part of the prob- part of the problem that I solve with the musicians who join my website is not just chords, okay? It's confidence.
So, if you're already on my website and you're listening to this, we're here for you. We're not going to judge your ability. I'm not going to say you should be here. You should know this already.
Those who know, those who have done lessons with me, you guys know this already that I don't I don't judge your abilities. I only want to know where you at right now and where you probably need to be next week or next month. That's the only thing that matters. Don't don't judge yourself.
>> [snorts] >> So, each of you who participated in this process, um you're going to get a what I call a confidence badge and that's going to show um so the other people can see um what that you've done. That's So, you see all these badges?
Hey, these people are getting badges because of um because of the work that you've put in.
So, I want to thank you again. Let's start from the top. Let's go ahead and figure this song out together and I want to get to it.
>> Oh.
>> [music] >> Okay, so let's get by our pianos. What I want you to do is play these when you're learning songs, don't overthink. Just play the chords that we tell you. It's simple, it's that simple. Right here, I have a I have a chart for you and you it's going to be in the email, too, so you can follow the chart.
But if you are on the website, um I would recommend you look at uh another chart that's going to teach you how to improv because on this chart, you're going to actually have a song lab.
And the song lab is going to is going to go through each thing. It's going to tell you some improv stuff. It's going to tell you you can do on each of these lyrics that can actually help to to um you know, to know how to make the song more colorful. But right now, we're just kind of focusing on the chords and I'll probably get to some improv stuff as I'm talking. So, your first chord is hallelujah. It's going to be a D flat chord >> [music] >> over B.
Then you're going to go to a a G flat chord over B flat. Hallelujah.
Salvation, the word salvation is an A major chord.
This is very important. The glory chord is very important cuz it's going to it's going to set us up for the improv that we need to do.
So, glory is a B flat I'm sorry, F sus 4.
And then this B flat goes down to here to an A.
Honor, that's going to be a B flat minor [music] like this.
Honor and power, on the power, you hit an E flat minor.
Unto the Lord our God.
>> [music] >> A-flat chord there.
God is a D-flat major.
If you're [music] still struggling with how to name chords because some of you some of you are like, "Well, Sean, I you know, I came from a different background. I do not know how to name chords yet." So, if you're on my website, you would just go to road maps.
And we're going to go to the section that's going to teach that. That would be on the beginner section here.
I'm trying to do a lot of things here with for you as I teach this. And you would go to the intro to the number system.
And during this time, this is when this is a very important lesson, especially if you're if you're coming from a sheet music background or you're coming from a background where you didn't learn chord names.
This is going to be a really important lesson for you. We're going to teach you all of that. We're going to teach you how to notate your song. So, you're going to take this as an entire course.
You want to go through that. And by the end of that, you'll have a good understanding of chords. I also recommend you do the stacking inversions and slash chords because a lot of these chords here are called slash chords, meaning you have a a chord at the top, which is a D-flat major, slash B, which means I have to play a B at the bottom.
So, we're going to we're going to take you through that process so that when you see this, you know what to play on the piano. It's very important.
So, that's the first part. Let's play that with them. And I'm going to show you how that goes here.
>> [music] >> A-flat major F sus 4 >> [music] >> B-flat minor E-flat major minor A-flat major [music] D-flat major >> [music] >> And now >> [music] >> Right now.
Let's talk about some of your improv [music] here.
Um that we can do. So, on the hallelujah, so that's the Instead of this A major, you can go you can go A major 7.
Look, this sounds really nice.
And the glory for this Fsus4, you can go >> [music] >> Instead of just going like this, you have this you have this B flat in the left hand.
This is moving in six cuz as a gospel musician move.
Hallelujah, salvation and glory.
And end on that inverted minor, coming out of that with that F chord or an E flat at the bottom.
And honor and power honor and power unto the Lord our God. That part there, we would what I would recommend is just um walk up those chords. You play a chord for each one. So, it sound like this.
So, A flat chord, G flat chord over B flat, another A flat chord over C, and then [music] God.
And then I went like this.
For the Lord our God is mighty. So, I'm doing So, what I did there is what's called an approach chord.
For the Lord our God what I used, let me go to my chart here.
I got I got a lot of things I'm uh dealing with right now in terms of trying to show you guys some different things here. So, this this approach chord was a tension chord in the red.
So, the remember chords move from left to right. So, since I was moving to this that's that's my target chord. So, to move there, I chose a tension chord. And the type of tension um I need to I need to add some of the more chords here cuz this this is not finished.
Uh yeah, this is not finished at the moment. But, it's a what's called a um sharp nine sharp five. I don't see that here yet, but this is a ongoing document. So, it will be here, but it is a type of tension chord there. All right. All right. Um is there anything else I want to say here with this sec- this is not the section I asked you guys to break down. So, I want to really get to this next one.
Let me just talk you through the before the before I Let me just actually just I taught you the chords. I spoke to you on some small improv, but let me just just talk freely here. So, Hallelujah. See how I'm building up this chord? Hallelujah.
>> [music] >> You right?
Um Right? Those are moving in six.
So, this is a D flat chord.
This is a D flat chord starting on a different notes. I'm using that over the Hallelujah.
>> [music] >> See, that's a D flat chord. Salvation and so there's a tension chord in the red section.
Glory. I can I can have that instead of doing this.
Some of the changes that we can make on the sus chord A lot of changes here.
They're all spelled out in my chart, actually.
Changes that we can make over an F sus 4 are are are shown here in the sus family. So, this is all these chords I can do here. So, I'm changing this to what's called a minor nine here.
So, instead of going salvation and glory which which sounds nice, too.
Remember this is Remember I told you when we get to the sus4, there's going to be a lot of changes here because sus voicings have a lot of changes you can make. One of the changes I can make is just having a F sus13.
So, that just means I have an E flat major uh seven in the right hand and in the left hand I have an F.
And what you could do is you could take these two notes and you could [music] bring those closer together like this.
So, hallelujah salvation [music] and glory.
Honor See, that's a nice little change.
But, instead of doing this, you can also you could also just make one change.
Change this F to a C.
Right?
Super cool. So, hallelujah salvation [music] and glory.
You can even walk this down.
Honor unto the Lord our God for the All right. So, now you know, see so all the stuff I'm doing here comes from this chart. It comes from all of these kind of improv things. But, I want to get to the part that I told you to break down because the the breakdown If you're watching this, man, just press the like on the video. That's how I know you're here.
The part I want you to break down was All praises be Let's listen to that part there.
Okay. So, those of you who tried to do that section, I can't wait to see This is where you test your ear to see how well [music] you did.
Let's do it.
>> [music] [music] >> Now, I want to just shout out, man.
Those of you guys who attempted this song, you killed this section. This is the part I said let's break down. This was our homework assignment for the month. And if you participated in it, you a lot of you got the chords. I would say most of you got those chords, right?
But if you didn't get the chords, you attempted the song, which is more important to me than getting the chord right, is the fact that you uploaded, right? So that's that will be the first thing. That's why I was I said off rip, that's what I'm congratulating you for.
But I want to get these chords. So, all praises be. Now, what I'm going to have to do in order to show you these chords, before I show you the chords, I have to show you the actual chords. I have to show you what the song is. So, all all praises, that's going to be an A flat over D.
By the way, this this sound here, um for gospel, if you really want to make this a gospel sounding, this this would be like this.
>> [music] >> That that sound the the the the the right hand doesn't change. So, that's when I went um he is wonderful.
Watch this.
Hallelujah. So, that's that sound right there, that's a that's a that's a substitution that we could make instead of going >> [music] >> Right? There's that dissonance there.
Right?
Anyway, so all praises be. So, the the word be would be a G flat chord over >> [music] >> B flat. To the king, listen Look right here, it's on the chart. King's A flat.
[music] Of kings, now watch this.
They do something different, but the actual chord is >> [music] >> king, okay? So, that's very important cuz we have to know when they what are How are they going to change this up?
We're going to hear it. And the Lord, which [music] is a B flat minor chord, our God is a E flat minor. He is one.
>> [music] >> E flat wonderful.
Okay? But let's see the change they make. Let's see the change they're doing, man. Let's hear that.
>> [music] >> Okay.
Yeah. So, remember I said in my video in my in my ear video, I said I always listen for the bass note. The bass note will help you. So, here are the chords for that section.
All praise praises be to the king [music] of >> [snorts] >> kings >> [music] >> and the Lord [music] our God It's still It's still an E flat here.
These are just little changes.
He is one derful.
All right. So, that's the change.
And why does the change work? Because the change works because of this kings.
This kings changed from an F major to a G flat minor.
And so, we approach this G flat minor with a tension chord. The G flat minor would be in the green section because in the green section is nothing but majors and minors, okay?
So, we have this minor we have this minor nine, okay? So, you got that minor nine there. So, since we have this minor nine, okay? You can see minor nine.
We can approach that minor nine five above. So, we went 1 2 3 4 5.
It's going to be this. So, it's just going to be like a a F minor chord over a D and an F sharp.
And you see there where it says sharp nine flat five? Well, on the chart here you can see And where is it? Sharp sharp nine. Oh, we need to add this.
I see the sharp nine there, but I don't see the Yep, there it is.
Sharp nine flat five. This chord right here. That's a common alteration that you can use in this red section that goes to the green section.
Okay? So, that's the one one of the explanations on why that works.
And then >> [music] >> Let's play it.
Okay.
Oh, they changed that. Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
>> [music] >> Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
The the reason why this is important is because what's happening is that the top note is staying consistent. It's not changing. So, you have to see at the top.
You have to You have to see the top. [music] Hallelujah.
Hallelujah. So, it's it's kind of like you have to know This is a pretty advanced section here.
So, if you're able to pick this up, good um good luck.
Good work on that. Good effort because kind of hearing all of this complexity while the notes staying on top does does require you to have that vocabulary. So, if you're on the website, you definitely need to be kind of coming to these meetings, making sure that you're building your vocabulary because building your vocabulary is what's going to have the biggest influence on you being able to recognize chords and use them quickly in context. But, I think let me see if there's any other thing on the video. Let's do this.
>> [music] >> All right, I'm going to stop here cuz this video is getting 20 minutes long.
So, ha A major chord, B major chord, D flat major chord, uh hallelujah.
Hallelujah. Yeah, so a lot of changes there. So, congrats again to everybody who did this. I just getting super long. I didn't expect it to be this long just just doing it off the cuff here. Um but, I wanted to make sure I got this to you. So, let's let's just say this.
Number one, if you are not on my website, you still have the chords here. You can learn the song based on what I just said and on the chords and on the explanation. I'm giving you enough to be able to start the process of learning and you can actually go and play this song. So, I've given you enough to do that. And if you are are on the website, I would definitely recommend you participate in these challenges.
Um not only I don't want you to just say, "Oh, I'm coming on the website just because I want the you know, the song lab and I want to be able to see the song lab here with the chord breakdowns on what we can do on each lyric thing."
That's that's a good reason to join, but the real reason is to is for the accountability part because what musicians are missing many times is accountability.
Right? To you participate in the process of there's a song I need to learn and it's not for church, it's for my own growth and it's something that will help you and it grow you. That's what I want. I want you to focus on you.
Okay, so learning the songs for the church, that helps that church, but learning songs for yourself will help you, will help your vocabulary and will grow your own ear. Thanks again, everybody. We'll see you again uh next time.
