Up to 30% of patients diagnosed with SIBO actually have Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIFO), meaning their symptoms are caused by Candida yeast rather than bacteria; since antibiotics only target bacteria and not yeast, these patients may experience no improvement or worsening symptoms when treated with standard SIBO antibiotic protocols, and treating the yeast instead has proven effective for many patients who haven't responded to antibiotics.

Why Your SIBO Antibiotics Aren’t Working: You May have Candida / Small Intestinal Fungal OvergrowthAdded:
You've had GI symptoms for years, but you finally get a diagnosis of SIBO. You think you're home free. You get home, you take the antibiotics, and nothing happens.
Here's what's actually going on.
So, this study showed that up to 30% of patients with SIBO also had yeast overgrowth, candida.
So, if you have symptoms of GI fermentation and it did not improve with antibiotics or even got worse with antibiotics, then ask your doctor to try treating the yeast. This is pretty common in my clinic, and this strategy works a great amount of the time uh for patients with SIBO who haven't responded to antibiotics.
