This video demonstrates the systematic approach to diagnosing and repairing a classic car's fuel system, including testing fuel injector pulses using a 12V light bulb, checking fuel pressure by inspecting the fuel rail, and identifying voltage issues (6.9V instead of the required 12.5V) that indicate wiring problems or poor ground connections. The presenter also shows the complete process of removing a seized smog pump and extracting a corroded fuel tank, highlighting the importance of checking fuel line condition and understanding that fuel pumps require proper voltage to operate correctly.

Barn Find 1991 Trans Am GTA Revival Part 4 Fuel Tank Out, Smog Pump Gone & New Sending Unit Arrives
Added:Oh, hey guys. You guys thought I forgot about this project, didn't you? No, no, no. We're good. So, today I'm going be putting the battery in and I'm going to be checking for some injector pulse. Uh, I want to make sure the injectors are doing what they're supposed to be doing.
So, I'm going to try to just crank it over. I believe the fuel pump is bad. I have a new f fuel pump already. Electric fuel pump. We'll put that right there.
Oh, a new fuel pressure regulator. New diaphragm for that. And this right here is some caps to cap off the smog system.
I knew I love pop-up headlights for a reason. It provides me a little bench to look at my list. So, we need to check injector pulse, check fuel pressure. I doubt it's going to have any pressure. I haven't heard the pump kick on yet. So, more than likely, no fuel pump.
Everybody I talked to, everybody on the comments section has said, "You need to change out the fuel pump." So, that's why we got the new fuel pump here. And I also bought a new sending unit and everything in case I need to replace that. Clean battery terminals. So I got new battery terminals for that. It just was having intermittent connection. A lot of corrosion on the terminals themselves. So I cleaned that all up and bought some new uh bolts cuz the other ones were the 8 mm are actually getting pretty rounded off on that, too. Remove the smog pump and check fuel pump fuse.
That's actually last on the list, but we'll work in reverse. Look at that.
Interior still looking immaculate. Still smells though. All right, let's see what we got underneath of here. Injector.
Injector. Okay, both of those are good.
So, I don't see a fuel pump one on here.
I don't know where a fuel pump fuse would be. I've seen some other videos where they're talking about it being up at the battery itself. I personally don't see a fuel pump fuse in here.
Okay, I'm going to put the new battery in. I can't find the fuse for the fuel pump. So, I'm just going to assume that everybody's right and it needs a new fuel pump. It would suck if I'm going to do all this work, drop the fuel tank, do all that stuff, only to find out that it was a fuse. So, anyways, I'm going to put our new bolts in and hook up the battery and I'm going to crank it over just to check the injectors first.
Oh, actually, I might have just now found the fuse pump. The fuel pump.
There's a screw right here. Let me show you guys. I think this is it. Watch it be popped.
Dang it. Okay, it fell out. Now I got to find it. Maybe it fell under the car.
Of course not. Why would it fall under the car? That would be nice. All right, I got to get it out because I got to see if it's blown. What if that's all it was?
>> A few moments later.
>> All right, now I'm going to use my billagege fingers. What do you guys call these in the Coast Guard? I used to call them billagege fingers.
I don't know what the rest of the world calls them. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. What's it going to be? What's it going to be? Is it going to be popped or not popped?
I'm going to go with not popped.
It is not popped. So, you know what that means? It's not the fuel pump. If that's the fuel pump fuse. I think it is. I saw another video where the guy was saying it should be right over here. So, mine's actually in the housing that it's supposed to be in, which is kind of cool. His was not. Okay, so the fuse is in there. Let's go ahead and drop the battery in.
I'm going put some dialectric grease on here.
All right, got a nice good tight connection. Nice good clean connection.
That's what I needed. All right, now we can move on to the back. Look at this.
I guess my daughter was in the car this afternoon messing with the reverse. I guess she left it in reverse.
>> All right, guys. I'mma go on it.
>> Oh, it's not that bad, actually.
>> It's great.
Look at that.
>> Can I move this?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Look at you. You look cool.
>> It's not shifting.
>> Oh, you got to turn the key on.
>> Where's the key?
>> It's where keys always are.
>> I'm just >> Oh my gosh.
>> A button.
>> This girl doesn't even know where keys are.
>> Wait, I'm asking. So, for real, where are the keys? You don't know where the key goes? It's traditionally where the keys have gone since the freaking Model T.
>> Hello.
>> It's right here on the side.
>> Oh, there it is.
>> So, you got to push it in and then turn it forward.
She don't know how to use a key.
>> Turn push it in.
>> Yep.
>> And then turn it forward.
>> Yeah.
>> How do I turn it this way?
>> Rotate it.
>> This is the hardest thing ever. Oh my gosh.
>> You do this, guys.
>> She doesn't even know how to do it.
>> Okay, push it forward. Push.
I don't think I'm doing it right. It's way too hard.
>> Oh, no. You're You're forward. It is now.
>> It won't do anything cuz I don't have a battery in it. So, now you got to push the button on the end. Uh-huh.
>> You might have to put your foot on the brake.
>> What is it? Break.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> Yeah. Got it.
You don't have to push it that hard.
Just got it.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Oh yeah. Hell yeah, brother. That was so cool.
>> That was nice of her.
All right. So now I want to check the injector pulses. So I was told that I could just put a 12volt lead to it, ground it out, and if you got voltage, you saw a spike or you saw a light, uh that would work. So, I'm going to do that now.
>> Okay. So, now I'm going to disconnect that fuel injector on the side there.
There we go. Okay. So, I got two plugs there. And so, apparently I can just put something in there like a little light and it'll flash. All right. All right. I have an old 194 bulb that I'm wondering if I can just unfold these like that.
Let's see if that would work.
Oh my gosh, that's perfect.
Literally perfect.
I think it will. Okay, so I'm going to leave that one there and I'm going to try to turn it and I'll let you guys get my reaction. Hopefully I can see a light flash. There she is right there. Let's see if I can see it flash. That would be cool. Okay, let me try to start this baby. Make sure it's in park. Okay, so now all I'm doing is watching to make sure those are flashing. No fuel pump.
Yes.
Yes. Oh gosh, it almost started, too.
Okay, so that's good. That means we got the injectors are trying to inject. We got power going to them. So that means we're just missing fuel. I don't know if it's worth it to check fuel pressure.
All right. So, everything I read, the fuel rail is over here. Oh, right back here. Oh, sweet. So, there's supposed to be a cap on it. So, let me just see.
I'll turn the key on. I'm going to press that down and see if any fuel sprays out. I doubt it does. Okay, so the key is on. So, it should be spraying fuel if I press this down.
Yep. So, fuel should be spraying out of there. And there's nothing. That's all right. It just means the fuel pump, which I kind of already knew. But while we're up here, I kind of want to go ahead and remove this smog pump. So, I'm going to take this out. I'm going to turn the key off and then work on taking this smog pump out cuz it's completely seized up and I ordered a new belt. So, at least that's already done. All right.
This is something that probably doesn't need to be done right now, but it's kind of in the way. And so, I'm just going to go ahead and remove this pipe out of here and then probably remove the smog punk. All it is is these two 10 mm bolts that hold this pipe on. And this pipe obviously doesn't have anything that it needs up here because it caught fire, I guess. So, I'm gonna eliminate all that crap. Luckily, I'm in a state that doesn't require emissions, so it's not a big deal. All right, there's one bolt out.
I don't know. I wonder if this smog pump was seized before or after, cuz if I put water in here, this is a direct pipe right down into that smog pump. So, I might have seized it. I don't know. I broke the connection on it. Broke the gasket and no water came out. So, it wasn't full of water.
Alrighty.
Dang it. Have to find that later.
So, now I got the bolts on the pulley.
Oh, look at that. I don't even need to Normally you got to hold this, but it ain't moving.
So now it's just this T40 Torx on the top and the bottom. I just got to take those out. If it was a T45. Oh yeah, T45.
Look at that. That's a big boy. Look at that thing.
That's like 10 in.
You sure about that? You sure about that?
Got it.
Oh, it's a littleer guy. So, you got the tall one for the top, small one for the bottom. Okay, so now it should rotate out of here. I think I need a persuader.
I think I should just be able to kind of put it in here and it kind of rolls out.
Oh, yeah.
Okay, I think we're out of here. Yes, sir.
That was easy.
This car is so easy to work on.
I don't know what all that is, but that's trash. We're making a hot rod here. We don't need no smog pump. All right, so now that's out of there. I'm going to hook up this fuel injector before I forget about that. I bet you guys are screaming that in the comments, weren't you? Don't forget to hook up the fuel injector.
All right, fuel injector's hooked back up. The next thing I want to do is I got these. It's something to do with the smug pump, I'm pretty sure. Maybe some type of valves. Anyways, I don't need them anymore. I'll save them, but I don't need them. And I've been worried about the wiring being in the way. So, I am going to get this wiring out of the way. Tie it off over here so it doesn't get caught up in the belt and get it out of the way right there.
So, now I just need to figure out where these I guess I need the valve for that, which I think I have, but I'll have to double check. make a thumbnail like this. Okay, so now I'm gonna cut the exhaust off. I already noticed there's a big old rotten hole in the catalytic converter. So, I'm gonna cut it off right behind the cat. Probably get rid of the cats, too, at some point. But at least right now, I'm going to get rid of it right behind there because there's a big hole already. And that'll help me.
I'm going to cut it in sections cuz the next step is to start lowering the muffler and getting the muffler out of there. But I'm going to need these on.
I'm not doing safety squints on this action. And I think I'll probably take this off. So, let me show you what I got underneath of here. So, that's a pile that I just made when I was trying to figure out what I was going to do underneath of here. And then right there, you can see that hole.
So, obviously, it's all corroded already.
I wanted to try to save the muffler, but I guess we'll have no muffler for a bit.
So, I'm going to cut that right at the back of the hanger. You can see a Y right there for the dual cats. So, I'll probably cut the other one.
I don't know. Right there. Get rid of those ugly ugly hangers. So, I'll cut that now.
All right. This thing just drooped out some. I don't know what that is. Look at that. I don't even know what the heck that could be. I'm going to see if I can just twist this thing off.
Oh gosh, it pulled right out of that hanger. Did not plan for that quite yet, but that works.
>> See if I can do the other side. That one's actually still intact, >> but it's old rubber. I think I'll just cut it.
now. Hopefully I can get it over the axle there.
Yeah. See, that's what I was afraid of.
I'm just going to cut this.
It's welded right here at this pinch point. That's crazy.
It's got to be the hardest freaking tack weld ever. This is ridiculous. Was this the factory exhaust setup or did somebody just throw an extra weld on there just a piss me off?
Finally.
Freaking finally.
Got to get my thumbnail photo. All right. So, this looks like the factory.
It might be the factory exhaust. It looks like it has I don't see Flowmaster or anything like that written on it. It almost looks like it has a number like 159197A.
I don't know. Might be the factory muffler, but it is full of crap. So, I'm gonna get it out of here.
>> All right. So, we got the exhaust out of the way. Don't mind that rust down there. So, now I got to take off these uh pan arm bars that go all the way across and then remove the straps and then undo all the hoses over there. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to pre-oak them with some open and shut. I should have already done this, but yeah.
All right, let's see if we can ug these off of here. pretty tight clearance under here. So, I'm going to jack it up a little bit. Hopefully, I don't push the unibody through the bottom of the car. I'm gonna use this 2x4 to hopefully distribute the load a little bit better so it's not concentrate on that one little puck from the jack. One of the people in the comments recommended that last time.
Okay, I think we're good now. Kind of. It's definitely sketchy, but I brought the jack stands underneath of the axle so that hopefully if the car gets pushed out, if it rusts away, hopefully the axle catches. So, let me show you guys what I got underneath of here. That's just the cover. I thought that shock was completely blown out.
How's there going to be metal left on this car? That didn't do nothing.
>> Now you got to break out the bigger uga.
Okay, that broke the head off of that one. That's not good.
And that one broke. All right. Actually, no. I don't think that one broke at all.
Actually, maybe the other one didn't either. Oh, yeah. I don't think the other one did either. So, just that one.
All right, that gets that loosened up.
So, now I can focus on these guys.
Got that one out. Now I need to get these two out.
I can't get those to budge. I'm going to use a little heat.
Got it.
Heck yeah.
>> Now I just need to get this one.
>> I could not get this thing out. I worked on it forever. Went through two batteries on my impact. put heat on it, penetrating fluid, and I just left it in place. It sucked, but it worked. All right, so I'm back here underneath the car getting ready to disconnect the fuel lines over here. And I'm thinking it's probably a prudent thing to check to make sure it's got voltage right here.
This goes to the fuel pump. So, I'll disconnect that there. I'm going to test for voltage right there. I would assume something's going to have 12 volts with the key on. Let's see if I can put this so you guys can see it. Hopefully.
What?
How have I not seen any voltage yet? I had to have touched something. Are you kidding me?
It's got to be some voltage.
What does that say? I can't read it now.
Sorry. -6 6.9. Okay. What the heck is the battery at? Battery better not be at 6.9.
12.4 exactly. So why am I only getting 6 volts to the fuel pump?
Is that normal?
>> 12 volts. A Pontiac Firebird pump is designed to operate on 12 volts, specifically around 12.5 reading 6 to 9 volts. This is often caused by a short or high resistance in the wiring, often a poor ground or a corroded connection.
the pump will likely not run properly at this voltage.
>> That's still at 6 volts, which is concerning, but more than likely the fuel pump still needs to be replaced anyway. So, I'm going to keep trekking on with this mission. So, I'm going to disconnect these hoses now. Get these out of the way.
Well, that's not a great start.
>> KEEP OUR COMPOSURE. WE'VE COME TOO FAR.
>> ONE DOWN.
There's like no way I can use these fuel lines.
There's zero. There's zero chance there's not any crap inside there. These things are destroyed. I mean, I can't even get this tube off due to the corrosion. I feel like I'm just gonna have to cut this and replace all these lines.
All right, so all those are disconnected, I guess you could say. So, now I got to do that one up there. That one should come off. Whether or not it's still usable, that's probably debatable.
So, that's a 5/8. had to move you guys out of the way so I can actually see what I'm doing here.
Ah, yes.
Hard old ringing right there. Okay, I had to get a little break off my back.
That was that was rough under there. So, I got the fuel lines disconnected. all the fuel lines and I got the pin arm barred. The other sway bar, I don't know what that other one is. Obviously, I took the exhaust off. So, now I got to remove this contraption so that way the fuel neck filler can move around a little bit.
Oh, don't want to scratch my paint, bro.
All right, I got these three screws out.
I'm going to soak those in some evapo rust.
All right, while those soak, see if I can figure out how to get this out. Oh, there we go.
This is really tight clearances.
Okay, that metal I got to see now. Is this [applause] is this plastic?
It's got a plastic fuel door. That's crazy.
There's one more little screw right there, but I don't I can't see what that went to. It was an adjustment for the door, maybe. Cool. Now I can clean all this out. And now it's time to take off the straps for the fuel tank. The one side on the driver's side came off pretty easily. The one on the passenger side did not. I ended up having to switch out my ugas. But once I got that off, I just pulled the straps out. And then the straps had little pins and they were in little slots and I just slid the straps right out of the way. And then the challenge of trying to get this tank out begins.
>> Filler neck's bound up over here. So, I just need to pull it that way an inch.
Gosh, I can't get her out of there. Blew these babies out. Look at that.
Yes, finally.
Jeez.
Victory.
Got the tank out.
Got it.
Oh boy. What a mess. That was a nightmare.
And it's a good thing I got a whole midfuel sending unit cuz this is crappy.
Oh, damn. It's actually not bad in there. I put some new fuel in there myself. That's one of the most surprising things I think I've seen yet.
But jeez, it's really not in terrible condition. This is part four, you guys. So, if you made it to this series, that means you've probably watched the other ones, and I really appreciate you guys. My goal is to have out weekly videos every Friday or Saturday with significant improvements.
So, let's keep this trend going. I want to give a huge shout out to this guy, Raul Carillo. He has been so helpful.
Look at he's typing me something right now.
He's been the man on doing all this work on this car. I literally just use him.
It's been great. So, right now, I wanted to just do something kind of fun and see if I can just get 12 volts to this thing and see if it turns the pump on.
So, I just have a little small battery here and I'm just going to hook it up and see if it turns the pump on.
Nope.
It doesn't do nothing. Okay. Well, now we get the new fuel pump in.
>> Oh my gosh, it smells so bad and it hurts my eyes.
>> It's just a little gas and water.
>> Okay.
>> And why is there bubbles coming out of it?
>> I don't know.
>> Is it like a frog?
>> Okay. It smells horrible.
>> It's like a science experiment.
>> Why is there bubbles?
>> All right, so I'm just finishing up this video and the fuel sending unit didn't show up in time. Turns out it actually just showed up.
>> Here's your flu sending unit. Here's your fuel sending
