Furniture Stores are Closing All Over the Place..

[00:00:00]All right, everybody. We knew this was going to happen. You knew, I knew. Uh we've got a string of furniture stores, one going out of business here in 2026, but also many others still in business in general, but closing a lot of locations. Now, this is on the back of a massive slowdown in home sales. And furniture stores, of course, they depend on home sales and homes being turned over, new buyers, people furnishing their new homes. And it's just not happening. Add that on top of the just the debt levels that people are in right now. People are really being choosy and cautious about their spending. More people buying furniture at Target and Walmart versus furniture stores. And we're going to hear from a few people today and kind of see what's going on in different areas, but we've got a big uh surge in this and I think we're just at the beginning. I think we're going to see a lot more stores closing here uh in the very near future.

[00:00:57]Aside from just these stores going out of business, people losing their jobs, that's one thing, but people in some cases are buying furniture only to never get the furniture delivered because between the time these people bought those furniture items the store went out of business.

[00:01:16]So, the store knows they're going out of business, but they're still taking orders, taking people's money, and then people don't get their furniture delivered because the store goes out of business.

[00:01:24]Really unfortunate. Take a listen to this.

[00:01:29]Circle Furniture suddenly closed its doors days before Christmas with no explanation. Now, we've learned the company has filed for bankruptcy. Some customers told us they're out thousands of dollars. The bankruptcy filing shows Circle Furniture had declining revenues and made about $4 million less last year than in 2024. Customers told me the company cashed their checks or charged their credit cards and never delivered their orders. I paid for something that never got delivered. Um I feel cheated to some degree. So, will people get their deposits back? I reached out to the state attorney general's office to ask about this. The office says, "If you finance with Circle Furniture using a credit or debit card, loan servicer, or buy now, pay later lender, you are encouraged to contact directly that issuer if you didn't get the product you paid for. If you paid by cash or check, it's not clear if you'll see that money again." Mm. So, people that paid for cash or check they're out of luck, it sounds like. If you paid with a credit card, that's one good thing about using credit cards, you can dispute that charge, but a lot of people use the buy now, pay later programs that a lot of the stores have in house, in the store. They have their own finance company or they work with a finance company, rather.

[00:02:45]Sometimes both. And that's going to be on your credit report. That is debt that's on your credit report. And you can try to dispute it like a credit card charge, and from what I hear, if the company doesn't respond, you can probably get it taken off of your credit card report, but not always. So, a lot of people are going to be hurting from this financially. It's going to hurt their credit scores one if they don't pay it, and two, if they don't get it taken care of, they may not get their money back. Pretty shady, these stores going out of business, but still selling furniture, or really not selling it. They're taking the money for the furniture, but not giving the people their product. Very interesting.

[00:03:24]And another part of this is the rents that are rising on these retail locations. Landlords, just like they are for just residential real estate they're also raising the rents a lot uh on these retail locations here. Take a listen to this uh business here going out of business.

[00:03:43]>> [music] >> Hey, I'm Mama Lu's oldest daughter, and here's the story. We are closing the store. Basically, short story is that the landlord here has refused to fix the AC for the past, I don't know, 3 to 5 years, resulting in really, really hot summers inside the store. And now that we've asked them to fix it, they are jacking up the rent so high that Mama Lu's going to have to move.

[00:04:08]So, this means that we're shutting down the store. Everything you see here is going to be on clearance and going to be on sale. So, come check it out while you can.

[00:04:18]It's too bad they couldn't have just found a new location. Obviously, the landlords you know, very crappy.

[00:04:24]Not fixing the AC for several years. You ask them to fix the AC, they're going to raise the rents on you like crazy, so.

[00:04:30]Um it's pretty sad that, you know, especially mom-and-pop places like this.

[00:04:34]It sounds like a family-owned place.

[00:04:36]At the beginning of the video, she said she was the daughter the oldest daughter of the owners of the business. Uh and aside just the mom-and-pop ones, it's the the uh national chain ones also, like Value City and other big ones also shutting down locations. If they're not shutting down, if they're not shutting down completely, they're closing a lot of locations.

[00:04:59]Now, it's pretty interesting though because some of the sale prices are pretty interesting. Let's just watch this here. Take a listen. A birdie had told me Value City Furniture was going out of business, and I was like, "Ooh, I bought my couch from them 5 years ago, and we love her. So, let's go see what else I can find." Now, when I [music] walked up in there, I was shocked by how much stuff they still had, but as Now, she's saying the price cuts aren't that good.

[00:05:22]I was shocked by how much stuff they still had, but as I I mean, the price cuts look pretty big. That's like 25% right there. Now, when I walked up in there, I was shocked by how much stuff they still Original price $4,299.

[00:05:35]You paid $2,224.

[00:05:37]What's that? About 25% off. And they could have just raised the original price just to make it look like, "Oh, it's right there, 25% off." Um >> [laughter] >> They could have just raised the original price to make it look like it's on sale.

[00:05:50]Um Sit. How you going out of business, but only taking $2 off of everything? It's giving real Bed Bath & Beyond 2023 when they was going out of business. Anyway, for context, um Okay, 50% off. Original price $299 for that.

[00:06:09]Now, they're saying like $124. Does that look like it's worth $299, $300?

[00:06:13]>> The couch I bought from them 5 years What's this? A light that looks like a fan.

[00:06:21]$350. No wonder they went out of business. Now, it was on sale for $199.

[00:06:25]Would you pay $199 for this?

[00:06:28]First of all, what is it?

[00:06:30]Anyway, for context, um the couch I bought Looks like a fan, but it's got lights in it. from them 5 years ago was $999, and it's currently on sale [music] for $1,049. You do with that information what you will. Anyway, >> picture $200 on sale.

[00:06:47]Anyway, I was looking for an entryway table.

[00:06:50]Um and I was also looking for a really big art piece cuz I have like 15, maybe 18 ft ceilings. I don't know, girl. Girl math. Anyway, I just know I need a really big art piece, and I was really taken aback by the art because a lot of Wow, $4,490 um yeah, $4,499 now, $3,374, 25% off. So, it's the same >> like it was made by AI, and it just was not cute. Anyway, I wanted to give y'all a thorough look of the stuff that they had. I didn't really need a kitchen table, so I didn't look at that too much, but I did get some. Anyway, I will wait until everything is 50 to 70% off to go start spending your coins cuz these prices ain't priced like they supposed to.

[00:07:32]By the time everything's 50% off, they're not going to have much left, or What is going to be left is going to be the worst of the worst. It's going to be the stuff that nobody wanted. And here's kind of the full scope of things.

[00:07:41]Several major furniture retailers are closing, liquidating, or restructuring in early 2026, driven by a frozen housing market, high inflation, and rising costs.

[00:07:52]With major losses including Value City Furniture closing 89 stores, Weirs Furniture closing about 70 something stores, American Freight closing over 300, um Badcock Home Furniture & More closing between 370, 380 stores, um Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams closing all showroom stores.

[00:08:17]And some of these go back a couple years, but we're seeing things accelerate this year uh with the housing market still being frozen. And people's budgets on more limited uh incomes or stretched more because of the cost of living.

[00:08:32]And people getting their rents raised like the person we heard from. Uh even the big stores have to pay higher rents, and that's another part of the inflation picture that we're seeing.

[00:08:44]Consumers facing canceled orders from closing chains may need to file claims. And also, another big one. People that bought gift cards at these locations, the gift cards are not going to be good when the stores go out of business. So, you wasted money buying these gift cards, unfortunately.

[00:09:01]Um Dunk & Bright Furniture closing their South Carolina location, but keeping the other location open. So, it's just two locations. So, a lot of places have to choose between keeping one store open, closing a different one. Which one are you going to keep open?

[00:09:18]And this is just another symptom, folks, of what's happening in this economy, not just for consumers, but also for retailers.

[00:09:26]And here's another one going out of business. This is in a mall that I've been to. This is in Riverside, California, which is about 100 miles north of where I'm at, in the Tyler Mall in Riverside. Riverside, California.

[00:09:36]Tyler Mall. Furniture City will be closing.

[00:09:40]Feels like they've been closing now for 8 months, maybe even longer. So, who knows when this is actually going to happen, but what would you guys like to see it replaced with in the future?

[00:10:06]So, American Signature Furniture is closing. I believe they filed bankruptcy. And I have to admit, I'm a little sad about this. This has been my go-to uh furniture store since I've lived in the metro Atlanta area. I mean, for years I've gotten furniture from here. I just Where are we going to shop?

[00:10:23]There are no more stores left. It's like you have to get everything online. I hate buying furniture online. So, where are people shopping nowadays? Because this place used The store used to be so beautiful and it had such modern items and options for a reasonable price, you know? And it's like every time you look up, another store is closing. And I mean, they went through this store quickly cuz I just found out the other day that they were closing. So, me and my kids ran out here just to see what was left. And as you can see, pretty much nothing. So, if you are somebody who shops for furniture. I'm not shopping right now, but I do like to know where to go when I do need something. Drop a comment. [00:11:12]Um what I'm doing is looking at all different places. Uh everything from online to OfferUp. People getting rid of stuff. Uh sometimes you can even find people getting rid of furniture for free.

[00:11:26]Um thrift stores.

[00:11:29]Um even retailers that aren't that expensive. Like there's a furniture section at Walmart and Target. But out here in California, we have a a couple stores that I haven't really seen go out of business. Their prices aren't super low, but they're not bad. We have Ashley Furniture. We have Bob's Furniture.

[00:11:46]Um couple other ones I can't think of right now. Uh not really going out of business, but the thing that I'm uh thinking is going to happen is the more other stores go out of business, it's going to be more of a monopoly with just a few stores remaining open, right? Hopefully that doesn't happen. Hopefully new ones will open up to kind of offset that and still give consumers a choice, but uh we see this a lot in just business, right? When one business goes out or when one business buys another business, prices seem to rise even faster than they're already rising because you get rid of the competition or the competition goes out of business or you gobble up that business cuz you bought it out, right? A lot of big businesses buying smaller businesses, consolidation.

[00:12:28]It's always bigger price increases after that happens.

[00:12:33]So, uh also good place that I like to buy furniture is IKEA.

[00:12:38]Pretty much everything you have to put together though at IKEA, which is kind of a turn-off for a lot of people. It could take a lot of time. Some Some of those things take a few hours to assemble.

[00:12:46]Um but it does make it a little bit cheaper. So, if you can put in the work, get some you know, get some dirt on your fingers, elbow grease, whatever they call it. Um save a little money at IKEA. Uh IKEA is still pretty pretty reasonable. Prices have went up at IKEA in my neck of the woods here in San Diego, over in Friars Road.

[00:13:03]Um but uh compared to some of these other furniture stores like Ashley and these other ones, Bob's Furniture, they seem a little bit lower price. So, that's what I'm doing. Uh I've got some in-laws that are making really good money. 150,000, which is really not a lot here in California anymore. But they're making about 150,000 a year between both incomes. And they are all about buying stuff online. Um Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and getting some real nice stuff at really cheap prices.

[00:13:31]They got a pool table for like $180.

[00:13:33]Like a big full-size pool table that you would see at like a a pool hall or even a a bar or something.

[00:13:40]And uh originally it was like thousands of dollars, they said. So, pretty cool.

[00:13:44]Uh looking online, secondhand, I'm not above that. And then if you want to really save money and still have options, you got to maybe uh kind of explore these different options here.
