When a wall is structurally compromised due to mortar failure and leaning, it can be safely demolished by removing support props, allowing it to collapse in a controlled manner, and then rebuilt using traditional lime mortar techniques with the original stones reused.

THE WALL NEARLY FELL DOWN ON ME!
Added:What are you doing?
>> I don't want you to come through here.
This is the start. This is going to be the start of something beautiful.
Absolutely beautiful. I'm going to show you. Do you know what?
>> I'm scared and excited.
>> This is my next big job. It's a good It's a good size job. So, as you can see, we've got a wall that was here and now it's there. It's on the floor. I don't know how it got there, but it's there and that's probably a big culprit, this big old edge.
But anyway, so the job. We are going to reduce the height from this little hole here, which is about 2.1 2.2.
Yeah, it's about It's about 2.2.
So, this little bit will stay in. I'll just take this off by hand. As you can see, it's blown in the wind. So, I'll just keep going. If I need to repoint some of this, it's just They just, you know, the customer wants to keep this up. It has to This wall has to stay. Um so, but obviously if it does go, it goes, isn't it? But we'll We're going to take this off by hand all the way down to the bottom and then I've got a digger man coming in. He's going to rip up this bit, dig out a new trench, rip out that hedge, and then from this point, we're going to It doesn't just end there. You think You thought it was all over. You thought it was all over. It's not. It is going to carry on going. So, literally to this point.
>> Don't fall in the pond.
>> about that. I've got to watch out for that. I've got to tell digger man that as well. So, you got three heights here.
That was the original height. That's a good height. That is a really good height. I think it was like near 3 m.
Just to the second height and then down.
So, we are basically going to be probably at the bottom of them coping stones on that middle section, but what I'm going to do here is I'm going to take out a chunk just so when digger man comes, he can just push that over. It is just going to get pushed over and I'll show you why in a minute. I could probably push it over by hand because it is literally leaning so much. So, anyway, it's from there all the way down to there. It's about 22 m approximately.
All depends where we stop. Um as long as we get down onto that second height, that's all that matters really, but I'll show you the other side. It's not looking very good.
But if you uh be careful, Mrs. Harvey.
If you look at this side bit here, pretty much if you put a level there, I reckon he'll be out a foot at least.
This is leaning over like an absolute Look at that. This is gone.
It is Yeah, and also, this is a thin wall.
You think Look, I'm size 12. It's not far off my feet.
You know what I mean? It's It's a >> It is really thin.
>> And also, look at the way this has fell down.
Where it's been sat there, all the mortar has just broke away. It's literally just like gone.
So, realistically, it's a lovely clean Look at it. These stones are lovely. What I have noticed as well, if you look, there's not lots of like through stones and that, but realistically, it's it's a failure of the base, isn't it? And obviously, the the old hedge hasn't helped. But anyway, let's quickly have a look at this side.
You can sort of see it. So, this bit's all done. So, it's going to be a hell of a journey. This is going to keep me busy for at least a month.
I am pretty much going to be on my own apart from We're coming into my little cave.
>> Oh, there is a little cave, isn't it?
>> I'm going to be pretty much on my own apart from obviously I've got I've got a digger man for 2 days. There you go. Look at that.
So, it is a bit, you know, squeaky squeaky bum hole, but um once we get it down, it's going to be safe. So, that's why I want to take down probably from this point.
I want to take down like a V just so once when we take this section down, it doesn't drag loads of the wall that here is actually quite flush. I've put a level off on that bit, and it's actually battering in, but the wall's battering in. So, that's how I'm going to rebuild it as well. It's going to be thicker at the bottom. But yeah, so that's my first job is just to take this bit down by hand.
And but look at these tops. They're absolutely lovely. Like these tops are actual the stone, the hand stone.
>> That's lovely.
>> Yeah, you like Yeah, it's it's it's a So, I really want to try and Well, that's another job. We're going to take the tops down by hand cuz obviously I want them to go back on the wall um at the end of the job. So, cuz they're all leaning this way, before we remove these, we can't really They're not really in a good >> As I say, please don't kick it.
>> They're wooden, aren't they?
>> Aren't they?
>> But yeah, so we're trying to flick them off or we'll flick them into the digger.
You know what I mean? I don't really want to be this side, but once we take this away, um yeah, we are just going to push it over.
This is all sacrificial, basically. But yeah, she she's good, isn't she?
>> She's lovely.
>> to keep It's going to keep It's going to shut me up for a little bit, isn't it?
But yeah, anyway, to the other side quick.
We'll quickly do a summary.
Oh, can't wait to have me coffees in that bush, I'll tell you. I love having coffee in a >> I thought you were going to say something else then.
>> coffee in a bush. I love it.
>> [laughter] >> What else would I be doing at work?
>> Don't know.
>> In a bush?
>> I don't know.
>> I can't believe they're standing and they're quite they're quite strong.
>> You're quite strong. You just moved it.
>> You'll be all right, lovey.
But yeah, overall, I'm actually quite excited to get myself stuck into this one cuz it's I'm excited. You know, I've been on all these little jobs and I just want a nice big meaty job. Oh, so it's going to be lovely. Literally reuse all the stone, fresh lime mortar.
Beautiful, eh?
Beautiful.
Look at that. It's just junk.
>> [snorts] >> That trellis is pretty much holding up that.
And you look as well, a lot of the stones are upright as well. They're not like tiles in, so that's probably hasn't helped, but this it is a very old wall.
I will find out how old it is.
Um it's not listed, but we are going to rebuild it like like for like.
Um lime mortar pointed.
It's just a shame I can't I want to try and uh It'd be lovely to clean up the stones, wouldn't it?
Just you know what I mean? Just to get it back to its normal sort of whatever. Anyway, let's start taking down this wall baby.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Oh my days, literally all I'd done was undo the prop ups and she's gone.
Look at that.
That's done a job, isn't it?
It's actually moved out the way of the trench. That is amazing.
Wow.
Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe that.
I think that wall was ready to come down.
Literally, I've just moved it over there.
Next minute, I could hear creaking.
I literally just ran.
Wow.
God, that's a bit easier, isn't it?
Oh, no, the track's come off.
Ah, no, we were doing so well.
Doing so well.
Oh, you know. Anyway, we're going to crowbar it back on. Bad news.
We've had to call it a day.
Um we got the track sorted, which was an absolute pickle. Um cuz we literally had like one little crowbar, but we did manage to do it. And uh then we realized there was a diesel fuel leak. Um yeah, a little one of the fuel pipes was had a leak in it. It's just yeah, not what we wanted cuz bearing in mind we got this done in like 2 hours. It's like I don't know what it is now, about 11:00. It's about 11:00 or 1/2 11:00. So, we done well really. So, pretty much the wall was there.
Got all the way that fell down. I am going to reshow the time lapse right now. Oh.
Boom! And here he comes, look. Josh rising from the ashes.
How amazing is that wall, the way it fell? Literally, I was on the other side when I took the props away. I literally was like I could hear it creaking here.
So, I run to the other side of the garden, just literally stood there for about 20 seconds. Next minute, woof. So, that was a controlled explosion, but like I say, we were obviously very wary of it and we knew it was going to go, but and I just can't believe the way it's fell down. It's literally fell down better than this side.
But like I say really, for doing a couple of hours, we are pretty much on ground level here now. So, what we do when we return, which won't be till Monday, is that we'll just dig down about 300.
Obviously, I got some spray paint as well, so we'll paint out a line um from point to point cuz it does curve slightly. Um the wall was like that. Um so, we obviously want to straighten it out. So, we will be over this way a little bit more. Look at the way it's fell down. It's crazy.
All the mortar like literally that is a coarse stone and even all the mortar just broke away. So, all the all the stone is literally clean.
It's beautiful. Like I couldn't have asked for any better really, but we are literally going to stop there as well.
Um so, yeah. We will continue this. I am going to shoot off onto another job. So, what I'm going to do now is I'm going to quickly run over and do a quick patch point job. Um Uh nice and easy.
Literally little I don't know what it is. No square meter or something. Going to quickly go bang that out anyway. And then I'm going to do like a lucky dip cuz I've got so many little jobs now.
I've got about like 30 nearly 35 sort of like odd day jobs, half day jobs, etc. Which people willing to wait, which is absolutely beautiful cuz they're great filler jobs. So, I'm just going to put my hand into my little magical hat and then pick out something to do tomorrow.
Then I might even treat myself and take Sunday off. But um and then we'll be back on here Monday. And then uh hopefully we can just get that trench done in the morning and then try and get concrete base in as well. So, we will just see.
Um but like I say, it's uh at least it's down now. At least it's safe. But anyway, come with me. Let's go over to the other job and uh see what's going on there.
So, I want to just get spend a couple of hours, well, an hour raking this out and get it all ready. Tomorrow morning, if the weather lets me, I'll come back and get it pointed. But yeah, as you can see, it's just it's just absolutely it's just gone.
It's just You know what I mean? It's just totally totally gone.
It's been suffering with the old suffering with the old uh cement. Look at that, eh? Look, just literally slopped on.
Right. So, we've got it raked out. I drenched it all yesterday to let it all sort of dry out a little bit more. I've got a few stones to reset. Um as you can see. But like I say, what I'll do now is I'll just give it a brush out and just get rid of all the loose bits that didn't survive the the blowout. But yeah, so like I say, I've got a mix on the go. Nice easy mix this one, so uh she's just mixing up to my uh I want it like sticky but not obviously wet, you know what I mean? But uh yeah, like I say, going to give this a little brush out and then get pointing, baby.
I've saved a load of stones here as well to use as pins. I've got a few gaps to fill as well. Um you know, so yeah, like I say, just get this patch done. Lovely jubbly.
Please, please, come on, just give me a break. Right, I'm all ready to go, literally ready to go, and look what's happened, but I think over there it's starting to brighten up a little bit, so fingers crossed. But it's all right, it's a good excuse to have a coffee and uh yeah, once this sort of gets a little bit lighter, we can crack on. Right.
Get some in there.
Chucking it in.
So, I like to get all the little stone replacements done first.
How did that go in?
It's like that.
Oh, it could have been like that.
Oh, it was like that, wasn't it? Yeah.
All right, let's hide this up quickly.
Now, I like doing all the um stone replacements first for some reason, I don't know why.
I actually don't know how this is going now.
Oh, it was like that, wasn't it?
That one.
Yeah, cuz he pokes in there.
Too much in there.
All right, it was up in the map here.
I'm going to try and get rid of that.
There you go.
All right.
Him in like that.
Get some hard bits of stone up there.
So we can poke it all in.
>> Poke it all in.
I think this stone was actually connected to this stone. It was one long stone, but I've cut it in half basically cuz if not we're going to have loads of cracked stone.
So, just took a little bit off of it and then we set it like All right.
Should be some mortar there.
This mortar is from a local supplier.
Um it's non-hydraulic. It's like a lime putty basically with the added aggregate and some hamstone dust to see that buffness.
Um it's just nice and easy for small little jobs basically.
Um But, yeah. Basically, it's just a lime putty with um aggregate added.
All right, let's get some of that in there.
Just to get some bulk in there.
I like it like this. It's like it's sort of really firm, but it's like sort of wet just wet to touch basically.
I don't want to squeeze it too hard.
Sort of like press it in.
Sort of the less you play with it the better really, but get your thinner one.
I don't want to push it down too much cuz all you do is squeeze the moisture out.
Just shape it in there. That's why I use my hand a lot. People always say to me, "Oh, you don't use a hawk." I do use a hawk, but depends on the style of stonework.
And also, just use what you like.
As long as you're not squeezing it, you know what I mean? So, like I've got like a longer bit there. So, all I do is just drag it down a little bit and then get look get the shape I need.
All right, I'm just going to take this up a little bit more.
Let's get it loaded in there.
Cuz they're quite deep joints. So, I'll pin it.
All right, let me get it from there.
Nice. There.
What you doing there? Good job.
>> Yeah, mate. Yeah.
>> That's a good point, isn't it?
>> Yeah, yeah. This is Well, it's all cement, you see.
>> Yeah, it looks nice though.
>> Yeah, so this is like proper lime, you know what I mean? But It smell really good.
>> You said, "Oh, yeah."
>> You smell like that. So, I was like, "Whoa."
>> Is that Is that new Lynx? The limited edition?
>> Oh, is it?
>> Yeah, mate. Vanilla or not.
>> I know.
Boom. We're done. Little section.
So, I'll get it wrapped up.
Come back to it tomorrow, maybe day after.
We shall see.
>> Boom, little baby done.
Right, it's a uh new day. I just picked myself up a lovely free coffee because if you use Confused for insurance and that, this isn't an ad. Um you get a free coffee um sort of like once a month. So, if you get all like different insurance policies. I don't know if they still do it, but obviously this one's I've had I've had I always keep forgetting about it. So, just grab myself a coffee. I've got about half an hour drive. I've got to go look at a job. Um so, yeah, see what's going on there.
Should get there about 9:00 and then I'm going to head on because in the next the village next to where I'm looking at the job is um a job which I think I did a few videos ago. It was when I was on like a ladder and that. Um just literally just constant walls everywhere that just need repair and we're just going to go around um and uh yeah, I'm just basically doing hits on it whenever I can. So, I just thought, you know what? I've got a day on nearby.
So, anyway, let's get on down and uh yeah, go look at one job and then head over to that job and see where today brings us. Anyway, cheers and let's crack on. Right, here we go. I'm just knocking up a 3.5 NHL 321 mix, very coarse, very nice. So, I don't know if you remember this, but I got I'll get a little bit closer.
Give me a second. What a beautiful day.
What an absolutely beautiful day. What a beautiful place.
So, last time I got to this corner in.
Let me come around here.
I got this corner in here.
We face some stones. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to concentrate on these holes and then I'm going to reset these tops cuz they've just slid forward for some reason. And then I don't know if you can see these shrubs on here I'm going to remove and then probably have to rebuild the top section of wall. We are just rolling in glitter. We're just trying to keep the wall up. Um but like I say, it's just they want the shrubs out really mainly and then eventually this will get repointed um filled in and that. But anyway, finish off that mix, get going on them and then crack on with this. Lovely jubbly. So hopefully not too much of that top section comes down with it.
But it is quite gone.
So, we shall see, eh? We shall see. All we can do is love, hope, and dream.
I've messed up.
I forgot trestles.
Somewhere back on the ladder. What a treat.
>> Right, so that's job number one done.
I've filled in all the gaps. So well, actually, it's not done. The whole thing needs rebuilding, but I filled the holes and I've pinned it all up as good as I can do for a minute.
So anyway, let's move on to job number two.
>> Let's get like a bit of wood, I think.
Bit of wood to make that straight.
We're back on the big end, baby. It's a beautiful morning. It's about 6:00, so I'm going to crack on and try and get ahead of Diggerman. He's coming in at 8:00. I'm going to start clearing this bit pretty much by hand, and also the end, and then when he comes in, I can literally just he can crack on with getting the trench out. And then, like I say, we might even be able to get some sort of base down, but uh realistically, I just to get a nice trench dug out. Um so, yeah, I'm going to just start hand balling some of this stuff back just to make it easier for the digger cuz we don't want no more tracks coming off. Um but anyway, I'm going to go finish me coffee because I need that morning coffee. Anyway, let's hopefully get this base sorted today and uh yeah, fingers crossed the weather behaves cuz it's supposed to be a little bit funky today.
So, anyway, let's crack on.
Absolute pickle.
We've got a uh where the where the tap is, the line actually goes under the wall, not this way. So, it's no one's fault. We were we were told it was this side. Nothing was near the wall, but anyway, I've got to run to the merchants and uh get like a either a tap or a stopper to put on that bit of pipe so it stops leaking.
Absolute nightmare.
Ah.
You never guess what.
Digger's broke down again.
Haha.
>> [laughter]
