Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition causing abnormal thickening of heart muscles that can lead to fatal arrhythmias during exercise, often without prior symptoms; athletes with family history of sudden cardiac death or personal history of fainting during exercise should get an EKG screening before participating in sports.

Sudden Death In Athletes #doctorexplains #fyp #shorts #athlete #hearthealth #cardiacarrest #doctorAñadido:
Why is it that a young healthy athlete can suddenly collapse and die? Well, this is something that's often called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a genetic abnormality that causes an atypical enlargement of the heart muscles, which can lead to a blocked blood flow or fatal arrhythmia that most often occurs during exercise or exertion. Unfortunately, most patients are asymptomatic until this event occurs. So, how would somebody know that they have this? Well, if there's a family history of sudden cardiac arrest or the patient has had prior episodes of passing out or syncope during exercise or exertion. The screening for this would be an EKG. That's why there's been a push for EKGs in young people who are starting sports. If you ever have a history of passing out during exercise or a family history of sudden cardiac arrest, I highly recommend getting an EKG before you start sports.
