This chilling case exposes a terrifying moral vacuum where digital clout outweighs human life, turning a senseless tragedy into a self-documented indictment of juvenile nihilism. It serves as a grim reminder that when violence becomes a performance, the perpetrators effectively script their own legal downfall.

Police Hunt Down 4 Kids After They Kill Stranger For Fun
Added:At this very moment, four young kids have just crashed a car into the store.
As they rob everything in sight, they are about to spend the rest of the night driving stolen cars and terrorizing Albuquerque until their crime-fueled joyride spirals out of control.
>> Are you guys going to We're going to start popping it.
>> Just bump in, bro. Like 15, 20.
>> Because in the moments following this, they would run this man over all for the sake of having fun. Now, it would become a race against the clock to catch these four monsters before they take another life.
>> Oh my god, I don't want to watch this.
>> You guys are watching us.
>> They tried to get to the little money You drove it around. You crashed into Mr. Habermehl and killed him.
>> Well, I didn't know the guy had died.
>> Law enforcement in Albuquerque, New Mexico were alerted to a shocking scene on May 29th, 2024.
It was the lifeless body of 63-year-old Scott Dwight Habermehl. Beside him was his bike, which was badly damaged.
Scott worked at the Sandia National Laboratory and was heading there in the early morning to start his shift. Though he stuck to the dedicated bike lane and had sufficient lighting to show where he would have been even in the dark.
So, what happened to him?
Investigators believe that he must have been struck by a vehicle. If it was an accident, then whoever was driving clearly fled the scene.
Police were confident that it may have been tied with a recent car theft where it was reported that four kids had been stealing cars and going on joyrides together.
In fact, they used one of the stolen cars they had jacked from a struggling mother to crash into a store, jump the counters, and steal cigarettes and alcohol.
>> [music] >> One such vehicle, a blue Hyundai, was found abandoned with significant damage to its front later that day.
However, it proved to be quite a difficult case to crack as there was not enough evidence that could have revealed who exactly the suspects were. All they had to go by was a video image of the car, which was recorded by a security camera at a nearby church.
In February 2025, 9 months after the homicide, the authorities were tipped off about a video on Instagram featuring four kids acting like gangsters as they drove a car into a cyclist, knocking him off it completely.
In it, they deliberately encouraged the driver to charge into Scott. The tip also included the name of the account owner.
>> [music] >> Are you ready >> Yeah.
>> On my soul.
>> You ready to start popping it?
>> Hurry up and let that [ __ ] start it.
>> They going to hit him hell hard.
Just bump him, bruh.
>> Like you just like bump him?
>> Yeah, just bump him. Go like Go like 15, 20.
>> Finally, after all this time, the police reached a breakthrough in the case.
Two of the suspects were identified as 15-year-old William Garcia and 11-year-old Jonathan Overbay.
Both of them were on the police's database from a separate investigation in June 2024. After checking both of their phones, they were promptly arrested by police.
In an interrogation room, Jonathan is the first to be questioned.
>> [music] >> Sitting beside his mother, Tina, he has a chance to share his side of the story and talk about why he would have taken part in such a terrible crime that resulted in an innocent man's death.
>> Do you understand your rights?
>> Yes.
>> Okay.
Knowing these rights, would you like to talk with me now?
>> No.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> Okay.
>> Okay, so I'm going to kind of switch over to that since we were just talking about this. Um I'm not making any promises or anything like that.
Um the question is do you have anything else you want to let me know about what transpired?
Is there a question about what we have?
>> Yeah.
>> But oh my god, I don't want to go to jail.
>> You guys know what I'm talking about.
>> Sorry.
It's like a glitch.
>> Oh my gosh.
He said somebody got hit and then they ended up dying.
>> All right.
>> And then I guess I don't know if he said you were there or what.
>> Like that's what they trying to give me before.
>> Yeah, but >> I was just trying to explain to you what I seen.
>> Thank god it just stopped. Thank god cuz I didn't want to see that.
If it was Oh my gosh.
>> He said what he saw that it was a natural reaction. So the bad connection.
So if it was still you guys would still watch it.
>> Since Jonathan is refusing to talk, the detective attempts to show a video of him and his friends hitting Scott on his bicycle. Likely in hopes that it will be enough to persuade him to open up about what happened.
Unfortunately, the video glitches out.
They will need a few moments to download the file in hopes of playing it without interruption.
Shortly afterwards, Jonathan makes an unexpected remark.
Before we continue, I'm about to reach 100,000 subscribers thanks to everyone's support. A subscription from you to help me reach my dream would mean the world.
>> So now cuz I called him right away and he was like >> Do you want to know?
>> No, he told me he's not going to say anything.
And then I don't know. You know what I mean?
Important things like that.
>> Why don't you just tell me right now cuz I'm going to tell you today.
>> And he said um that he's sorry that if he would have known he didn't really know he said it was at the last minute. It just popped up. He just popped up.
He said sorry cuz he wish they he have warned you more and told you more before he did that.
But you're not after Scott anymore.
>> So, here you go.
So, this is the page that I wrote that you write on.
I wrote that you answered yes to all of these. You understood your rights and you did not wish to speak with me.
Go ahead and initial all of these numbers and then sign >> Jonathan casually claims that he was never there. Unfortunately for him, these detectives weren't born yesterday.
They are certain that he was likely the driver of the stolen vehicle that struck and killed Scott.
The police think replaying the video might be enough to get Jonathan to talk.
So, they play the footage a second time.
>> Can you imagine you have to go through this right now?
Um I would It just sucks not knowing too, you know?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay, here you go.
>> [snorts] >> Oh my gosh.
>> Maybe that's what he was searching.
>> Driver's my last name.
>> Yes, I know.
>> You got to write it down.
It's bumpy, right?
It was bumpy the whole way.
Sure.
>> Are you mad?
>> Freaking pizza falling everywhere. I got phones falling and everything.
>> Jeez.
You're mean.
>> Here you go.
>> Where are you planning to go?
>> You got to write it down.
It's bumpy, right?
Bumpy the whole way. Black 15 model.
>> Can we watch it again?
>> No, you can use your cell phone. You're going to be not using your cell phone and doing additional background checks on your cell phone.
>> And after watching the video a second time, Jonathan does not seem fazed at all. He seems perfectly unbothered by the sight of a man dying.
Nevertheless, it looks like the detectives' attempts at getting Jonathan to talk has failed. So, they wrap up the interview.
But, that doesn't stop his mother from trying to explain why she won't let her son speak any further.
>> That was like last year, right? That's when Brandon said >> I don't care.
Well, you probably won't find anyone as comfortable as you are with your phones.
>> Yeah. I just watched the video. It was all frustrating. The reason my personal phone is stressed I've been calling people but I even might put it on but I didn't do it.
So, I was frustrated cuz I didn't I didn't really know.
>> but you're making me nervous. I have I have anxiety.
>> Yeah.
>> But, it's okay. You know, thank you very >> So, you watched the video and you >> That's fine.
>> Um it will be a while because once Um like what we said, we're getting the warrant approved now.
And once that's approved, we will have a forensic specialist come out to collect your fingerprints and your DNA, okay?
So, it's going to be a little bit.
>> And do you know like how how long approximately like is a little bit?
>> Uh >> Like months?
>> No, like they're going to come today.
>> Oh, okay.
Oh, okay.
>> So, he he has to stay self-detained um while we get that taken care of.
>> So, but you guys are taking him to juvenile after? Like he has to go to juvenile?
>> And then the judge makes the determination. Okay.
>> Yeah, he's going to be in court Wednesday and then yeah, we'll see. We'll try to figure it out.
>> Um if we were ever to try to re-question you at that point, we have to wait out the 14 days.
Um then we have to re-interview you and that's what we would this entire thing over again.
But you have to have your attorney there and sign.
>> Um so like so just because we said no now, we don't have to do this again?
>> No.
>> Unless we choose to.
>> Yeah, it's your choice. That's how they and then booking everything right.
>> And it would make it easier to be able to, you know, speak and stuff, but it's just for in the moment it was off the wall and I think it's best that we release like things like that. That's a major charge, too, honestly.
>> It is.
>> Yes.
>> And um but and I don't know.
So the best thing I need to talk to a lawyer, too, you know what I mean? Just figure out what what's our rights, what's going on, type, you know, so.
So yeah.
>> So you are already ordered in this case.
Okay, you can sign here.
>> Okay.
>> Cool.
>> Yeah.
Please stop, okay?
Perfect.
>> Sure.
>> [snorts] >> Love you.
>> Cheers.
>> Perfect.
>> [clears throat] [snorts] >> Thank you. Bye.
>> Thank you.
>> With Jonathan sticking to his request for legal representation, his interview quickly comes to an end. Thankfully, the police have a plan B, his accomplice William Garcia.
Still, his attempts at asserting that he was never there was a clear indication that he does not want to take accountability for his involvement in the crime. [music] The detectives need more answers, especially in regards to where they got the vehicle, who exactly was involved, and why they would go so far as to knock a civilian off his bike.
Right now, their best bet is to turn their attention to William Garcia, who is believed to have been the one who recorded the incident on his phone. He is called into an interrogation room on March 9th, 2025, where he is given a chance to share his side of the story.
>> So, do you understand your rights?
>> Yeah, I understand.
>> Okay. And would you like to talk with us?
>> I would like a lawyer present.
>> Okay.
All right.
All right. So, what's going to happen now is we're going to put you back into that holding cell.
And I have a person that's going to come and they're going to take um your fingerprints.
And they're going to take photos of you and they're going to take um some DNA samples from you.
And the DNA sample is just real quick and easy. They put like Q-tips in your mouth and you rub them on your cheeks.
It's like almost like brushing your teeth. It's like Yeah.
>> That was like the COVID test.
>> I know.
>> [laughter] >> I would never do that to anybody. That's mean.
So, it's just like you're brushing your teeth. You can't just rub those cotton swabs in your cheeks. And um once that happens, then you'll get transported to the Juvenile Detention Center, okay?
>> Unfortunately for the detectives, since William is requesting legal support, the interview is brought to an abrupt end with no progress made.
As frustrating as it is, they will not be leaving empty-handed as they take a DNA sample from him.
The investigation would progress at an incredibly slow pace until more than a year later on March 13th, 2026, when William finally decides he is ready to share his recollection of events.
However, the detectives need to be careful here. He is willing to talk on a purely voluntary basis, so they need to make sure he is comfortable with speaking and they don't push too hard.
Because if he backs off a second time, it could take significantly longer to get a confession and bring Scott's killers to justice.
>> The vehicle that ran into Scott had a real uh William occupied in that vehicle.
>> Is that it?
>> Yes.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Was um Elijah Engelking in the vehicle with you? Yes. Where were you sitting and where was Elijah sitting?
>> We were both in the backseat. I was in the the right and he was in the left.
>> Okay. Were you videotaping?
>> Yes.
>> Uh did you say anything that's been I'm assuming you've you've you've seen the videotape.
Uh anything that's in the recording uh is any of that your voice?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. Is any of that Elijah's voice?
>> Yes.
>> Do you recall what what is it that Elijah is saying?
>> Um like what exactly did he say?
>> Or just general just generally.
>> Um >> There were statements about just bump him.
Do you recall that statement?
>> Yeah, I >> Who said that?
>> We both did.
>> Okay. You both said just bump him. Okay.
Um what else did he say that you didn't say?
>> Um he said go 15 to 20 and then he Before that he told him to not hit him fast.
>> Is there anything else that you said?
>> Um No. That's the last thing I said.
>> So far the questioning is off to a promising start. Not only does William confirm he was in the vehicle and was recording, but that he was indeed the one who suggested hitting Scott the cyclist.
He even mentions one of the other suspects in the case, Elijah Engelking.
If he continues to be open and honest with his responses, the detectives might be able to get the answers they so desperately need to crack it.
Still, the best thing to do now is to let him go back to the beginning and recall what supposedly happened starting off with who stole the vehicle in question.
>> I don't remember everything we did that night cuz it's it's a while ago.
And um I [clears throat] know I was with them when they got the car.
And um I think Jonathan got it.
I don't know who got it but um he got the car.
I was across the street and we got in.
And we were just driving around, really.
Weren't doing much.
And I know we picked up Elijah at one point.
And we were just driving around, recording videos, but I was driving and cracking up.
>> [clears throat] >> And most of the night, Jonathan was driving because he said, "Oh, like it's my car, right? I got it.
So."
He didn't let anyone else drive.
And then yeah, that's that's what we were doing before.
>> Okay.
Where did you guys get the car?
>> Um this somewhere near my house.
We snuck out of my my house like while my dad was sleeping.
And I don't remember exactly where we were.
But it was somebody's house. It was outside somebody's house.
>> Okay.
And it was close to your house?
>> Yeah, it was it was pretty close. I I don't remember how close. So, I don't remember like where it was, but it was it was near my house.
>> Okay. When you snuck out, um tell me about that.
>> Um I don't really remember how we snuck out.
I just remember like waiting until like later, like it was like 12:00 or 1:00, something like that.
And um like waiting until my dad fell asleep, and then I don't remember if we went out the front door or if we went out my balcony.
I don't know. I don't remember that part.
>> Okay.
Did [clears throat] you leave in a vehicle or did you leave on foot?
>> We left on foot.
>> Okay. And who was with you at that point?
>> [snorts] >> It was me, Jonathan >> Okay.
And were they at your house?
>> Yeah.
>> Like they were staying the night at your house?
And you all decided to leave together?
And why did you sneak out?
>> Cuz Jonathan was He was like, "Oh, let's go get a Let's go get a car."
And we agreed with him.
>> And so you guys walked to the area where the car was and that's why you know it was close to your house?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> William confirms that Jonathan was indeed present. In fact, William accuses him of coming up with the idea of stealing the blue Hyundai in the first place.
This is a major breakthrough in the case and it exposes Jonathan as a liar who was desperate to say anything to make the cops believe he was not involved.
During the interview, he confirms that a fourth suspect, 11-year-old Messiah Hayes, was involved as well.
Just days prior, Messiah was captured on a security camera robbing a liquor store.
In other words, the suspects were more than just troublemaking kids. They loved terrorizing others.
And his recollection of when they stole the vehicle pretty much proves that.
>> You said that you were across the street and Jonathan broke into the car and got it started?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> I Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was Jonathan.
>> Okay.
And I know that you said um that Jonathan was Did you say that he was the only one that drove it that night?
>> From what I remember.
I I Maybe I don't remember.
>> Okay.
>> I think I drove it once right after we left.
That That's probably it. I don't I I don't know. I think we all drove at one point.
But I don't I don't really remember.
>> All right.
Did you stop anywhere um in between stealing the car and picking up Elijah?
>> I I don't think so.
We were just driving around. I don't remember really.
I don't remember where we went to.
Yes.
I know we were driving like down the lanes.
We were driving next to the equal pools.
I don't really remember where we went from there.
>> Okay.
Did you stop and pick up anybody else that night?
>> No, just Elijah.
I I texted someone to ask if they wanted to get picked up, but um they didn't answer me.
So.
>> Who was that?
>> Um it was my older brother's friend uh Xavier.
>> Okay.
Xavier?
>> Yeah.
>> And what time or about what time did you pick up Elijah?
>> I I don't remember.
I don't remember when we picked him up.
I just know like I was texting him and I was like I don't remember exactly what I texted.
I just remember like I asked him if he wanted to get in the car and he wasn't answering for a little bit and then I think he woke up or something like that.
We picked him up.
>> Did um where did you pick him up from?
>> From his house.
>> So, you pick up a Okay, pick up Elijah.
And who's in the car with you at this point?
>> Um me, Elijah, and Jonathan.
>> Okay. And you said that Jonathan was probably driving at that point?
>> Most likely.
>> Okay. And you were in the backseat.
>> [clears throat] >> And were you sitting behind the driver or behind the passenger?
>> Like when we picked him up?
>> Mhm.
>> I was behind the passenger because when Elijah got in he went through the other door.
>> So he was sitting behind the driver?
>> Most likely.
>> All right.
And what did you do once you picked up Elijah?
>> Um I don't I really don't remember what like what we did before all of it happened. I just remember we were driving around.
>> Do you remember how long approximately Elijah was with you guys before the crash?
>> At least an hour or two.
>> The group of teens continued driving around in the stolen vehicle with Jonathan behind the wheel, treating it like it was just a regular outing with friends.
The thing is, this is not the first time they have stolen a [music] vehicle as they have done it plenty of times in the past. But on this night in particular, they had brought with them a lot of illegal goods.
>> I don't know who all had it, but they all had like disposables.
>> Like cool.
>> pens >> Okay.
>> They were all smoking in the car.
>> All right. So each of you were smoking vapes?
>> Yeah.
>> Who else had a weapon?
>> Um No one.
No one had the gun.
>> Whose gun was that?
>> Um He I think [clears throat] while when the car he like right after we stole the car he told me that he got it out of a Kia he stole like a couple days before that.
>> So what do you know about that car?
>> The car?
>> That he stole the gun out of?
>> Um nothing he just told me that he stole it and then he stole the car the night before.
He said he stole a Kia but he didn't say like I don't know I don't know if he said like exactly what Kia it was but he just said he found it in a car that he stole.
>> And for the record when you guys said that you would steal Kias were they always Kias?
>> They were Kias and Hyundais but mostly Kias.
>> But even when you stole them all you would say that you would say that you stole a Kia.
>> Yeah basically.
>> Okay.
All right so I'm going you said that you did record a video of the homicide and crash.
And did you share that video?
>> Like after?
>> Mhm.
>> Um I shared it like like a year later from to It was it was in a folder with a bunch of other videos with us like driving new cars.
>> And how often would you go out with Jonathan and Elijah and steal cars?
>> Um >> [clears throat] >> before that I was with them like two, three times before that.
I mean, like that was like the like the second time I was with them.
Like and they actually stole the car.
And before that, they would like pick me up.
Or that was like four times.
>> And you would know that they were stolen cars that you were riding around in?
>> Yeah.
>> Controlled substances and a gun were in their possession when they stole the vehicle. The gun was apparently stolen from a different vehicle in a previous break-in that allegedly took place the night before.
Even worse still was the fact that Messiah, a literal child, was recorded waving the gun like it was a toy. It's clear that none of them cared about anyone's safety, not even their own, and that trying to look like a gangster was their sole priority.
What puzzles the detectives is the fact that the video of the incident was uploaded to the internet less than a year after it took place.
Was there any particular reason why they waited so long?
The detectives ask about this before going into further detail about the homicide itself.
>> So, you said that you shared the video about a year later.
And who did you share that with?
And how did you share that video?
>> On Instagram.
He asked me to like send him like old videos. And I was driving the the cars.
>> Mhm.
>> And uh I I just sent him the whole folder.
>> Okay.
So, um okay, tell me about um right before the homicide and and the homicide itself. Tell me about that time in the car.
>> So, I remember I don't know where we were going. I just know we were driving down I think it was a movie.
I think that's where we're driving.
And I was on my phone.
And I felt the car make a U-turn.
I think Jonathan and I were like talking about something and then he started recording.
And um started recording cuz like earlier that night we were making videos about somebody driving recklessly and stuff.
And then yeah, then the video and he's like, "Oh, are you recording?"
And Elijah was like, "Yeah."
And um yeah, I watched the video.
But I think Jonathan he was like, "Oh, I'm about to hit this N-word."
And yeah, we got pulled over and stuff, you know.
And we keep driving and then um I'm like, "Just Just bump him, bro, cuz he said he's going to hit him. I'm like I don't want him to hit him too hard.
Like I was trying to, you know, minimize what he was trying to do.
And um Elijah was like, "Yeah, just bump him and go 15 20."
And then I think like hurry before he turns or something like that.
And then I think like before that, before I said just bump him, Elijah was like uh "Don't hit him hella fast."
Like before I said just bump him.
And then Jonathan speeds up instead of slows down.
He's going like 35 40 and then he hits him.
And after he hits him, I was pretty shocked cuz he had hit him pretty hard.
And that's in the video, I think.
And I think he turned, and then I was pretty upset right after cuz he didn't Like I told him to just bump him at a lower speed. I told him to slow down, and I was like, "Oh, you you hit too hard."
And um after that, I I wanted to go home.
And I don't really remember where he went after that.
Just know that we're like driving through the neighborhoods like where we turned.
And um I don't know how long after he hit him, but he was like driving back.
And um he We saw like ambu- ambulance lights where it was.
So, like the little car reversed and turned around.
>> William's recollection of events aligns with the recording of the hit-and-run.
Upon seeing Scott cycling beside the road, William tells Jonathan to just bump him at a lower speed. Yet, what is not immediately clear is the fact that according to William, Jonathan increased the speed before hitting Scott.
Though William claims he felt bad afterwards, it seems he did not feel guilty enough to do anything about it as he immediately joined his friends in stealing another car after damaging the blue Hyundai.
He may seem like he is sorry, but the investigators believe that his actions tell a much different story. And what better way to call him out on this contradiction than by replaying the footage of the homicide?
>> So, you were telling me that you were freaked out that he he hit him.
>> Yeah, right after.
>> Yeah, in that video, you continued to to record as you guys are making that turn.
>> Cuz after he hit him, I wanted to get it like to see like like what like how fast he did it.
Cuz after he hit him, I mean I was still recording.
So.
>> So, I just want to get kind of your thought process.
You didn't want him to be hit very hard because you were concerned about that.
>> Yeah, I didn't really know what they were talking about before, so and Jonathan, if he's going to do something, I didn't want him to do it.
>> Okay.
So, as you are recording and you all hit him, you're all in the car, you're all talking about it.
You hit this person on a bicycle.
You continue to record until you turn the corner.
And then you drive through the neighborhood for a while.
You steal another car after seeing that there's heavy damage to the windshield in the car that you just used to to hit the person.
And then after you steal a car, you say that you get dropped off at home.
But you don't tell anybody about what's happened and you don't try to get help for the person that's been hit.
>> Well, I didn't know the guy had died.
If I If I knew If I found out the next morning, I definitely would have said something.
>> Do you think that that person was hurt?
>> Yeah, I knew they were hurt, but I I didn't know they were hurt that bad.
I know like how old they were or anything. I just cuz Yeah, I've never really been in a situation like that before.
So, I like know how badly he was hurt.
>> A peculiar detail about the homicide was the fact that apparently the stolen vehicle had been going around 20 mph and then accelerated to around 40 mph after seeing the cyclist. Could William be lying about the vehicle speed in a vain attempt to protect his friend?
Whatever the truth may be, one thing is for certain. Once the vehicle was damaged, the teens decided to ditch it completely.
After they stole yet another vehicle on the same night, they would go on to ditch that, too.
Still, considering the severity of the crash, the investigators need to know why none of the suspects told anyone else about what happened.
>> So, you guys didn't call the police, right? Obviously.
Why didn't you call the police?
Because um Because >> I was Sorry, just for worrying in regards to hitting the guy after hitting the guy.
>> Um I was scared to get in trouble cuz we were in a stolen car, I guess, and I didn't want to call the police and and uh and Jonathan, they would definitely get mad if I called the police.
>> Those guys have threatened you in the past?
>> No.
But, they aren't that much sugar.
And they are They've done a lot of done stuff that I've heard about. Have they ever told you about doing anything um anything bad prior to that night?
Not like, you know, stealing cars or anything else like that kind of stuff.
>> I know Jonathan came in here higher before now because he shot at uh like a house or something like that.
>> Did he Did he or tell you about anything they did that they never got caught for? Stuff like anything bad?
>> They never told me like about any anything but in here I found out like a lot of stuff that they've done.
>> But not from them?
>> Not from them.
>> Um if that's okay. Um did uh threaten you with the gun that night that you guys were in the car?
>> He didn't threaten me but I trusted him with the I said that.
>> Um why didn't you tell your parents after this happened?
>> Because I didn't I didn't want to get in trouble.
And um I I thought the guy was okay.
I think he got like hurt that bad.
>> Did um did anyone in the vehicle know who this guy was before you guys ran this one?
>> No.
>> Okay. Good. Thanks for having to ask that.
Um is there anything just a general question, is there anything else about that night that was that was really odd to you that we haven't talked about?
>> Um >> The fact that other than what you know we happened to the stolen car. The fact that I had a gun cuz every time I was with him never had a gun.
So it was a little odd.
>> What conversations did you, Elijah, Jonathan have after the homicide about the homicide?
>> I know me and Elijah like weren't really happy about it at all cuz like he hit him way too hard and he was going way too fast.
Cuz Elijah [snorts] told him to slow down.
He never did.
So I was pretty mad, me and Elijah.
We were like, "Bro, that was stupid."
[clears throat] I was like I was like, "I can't believe you hit him that hard."
And um Yeah, that's it's really what I remember after right after right after.
I don't really remember what he said.
That's really what I remember.
>> Okay.
>> I was I just wanted to go home. I was just like, "Yeah."
>> It doesn't sound like William was coerced into not telling the truth to his family, friends, or even the police.
Perhaps he truly feared taking accountability for his involvement in the crime and did not want his friends to end up getting punished alongside him.
Now that he has been caught, however, he seems more than keen to shift the blame onto Jonathan, painting him like some sort of thrill-seeking lunatic.
But what if the whole incident might have been premeditated >> [music] >> and that they deliberately wanted to cause harm? After all, William was the one who actively encouraged Jonathan to bump into him with the car.
The detectives decide to float this question his way before wrapping things up.
>> When you said just bump him, what did you think would happen?
>> I >> [snorts] >> Like whenever I said, "Oh, yeah, just bump him." I thought he was just like going to like get close to him and just like knock him off the bike or something.
But, that's all we did after that. I thought Yeah, cuz I was going to I was going to just going to hit him and just bump him bump him off the bike.
>> So, when did you realize that Jonathan was going to hit him?
>> Like in the just like knock him off.
I realized that like when I restarted sped up right before you.
>> Yeah.
So, I'm wondering like at what point when Mason recorded it, did you know at the point when Mason recorded it that they were going to hit the cyclist?
>> Like basically like right after I started recording cuz like he was like, "Oh, my god. I'm going to hit this guy."
And um Yeah, so like I was like I was just I mean, that's whenever I found out that he was going to do it.
>> So, when you said just bump him, were you I mean, why did you say that?
>> Cuz Jonathan said [clears throat] he was going to like hit him.
And what I I didn't want him to hit him like hard.
I didn't want him to hit him hard or anything.
>> Okay, well, I just have a second.
Yeah, okay.
Okay, yes.
We'll we'll we'll we'll we'll talk about this.
Go ahead and spray him off. Okay, start it up.
>> Um It's like I said, he I knew he was going to like cuz he said, he's like, "I'm going to hit this guy."
And I was thinking in my head, I was like, "I don't want you to like kill the guy."
So, I told him to just bump him lightly.
Told him like to not hit him like hard.
Wanted like to knocked him off the bike.
>> Though William claims that he did not believe colliding with a cyclist would be potentially fatal, the detectives did not cut him or any of the others any slack. By all accounts, all of the boys were involved in the death of an innocent man, and there was nothing that they could say that would save them from the consequences.
Jonathan Overbay was ordered to stay in prison until he turns 21, while William Garcia's case remains pending in children's court. Messiah Hayes will be charged with first-degree murder. Elijah Engelkein pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and deliberately leaving the scene of an accident.
