An Adventure in Space and Time (2013 Version) | Doctor Who ReactionAdded:
Hey guys, welcome back to the channel.
Today we're watching an adventure in time and space, a Doctor Who special.
Hey guys, welcome back to the channel.
Today we are watching an adventure in time and space, a 50th anniversary special for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. And I'm really excited cuz I don't This isn't an episode. This is either um a precursor to what I need to see or it is a refresher of things that I probably need to know going into some other parts of the 50th anniversary special.
Um yes, I am watching Night of the Doctor and the Last Day webisodes after this and then I will be watching the 50th anniversary special and then after that the Christmas special, Time of the Doctor. So, I have it and I know when to not watch certain things and to plug my ears or like avert my eyes until I hear a very specific line being said and then I can go back to watching it. So, um I'm This is like, you're you're hiding somebody from me and I'm onto you, but also thanks.
So, I'm really excited to get into this cuz I don't know what it's about.
Doctor Who.
What could be better? So guys, let's go.
This is the BBC. The following program is based on actual events. Mhm. It is important to remember, however, that you can't rewrite history, not one line.
Except perhaps when you embark on an adventure in space and time.
>> Yes, if you have a TARDIS, you kind of can. David Bradley. Okay, everyone was talking about I'd see him in something um Doctor Who related in the future.
Brian Cox, okay.
Written by Mark Gatiss.
I think everyone tells me I'm saying his last name wrong, too. It's fine.
I'm an American.
We mispronounce [ __ ] all the time.
Okay, 66.
Everything all right, sir?
Oh, it was an actual policeman coming out of a box. It wasn't a TARDIS.
You need to move along now, sir.
You're in the way.
Hello.
Mr. Halliday.
They're asking for you now.
Wasn't that the first Doctor, William Hartnell?
SHUT UP, WILL YOU? I'M NOT READY.
I NEED MORE TIME.
I don't know what's happening, and it's making me sad.
Oh. Look, a Cyberman.
Smoking.
Can I take my head off, mate? I'm boiling in here.
>> No, we're starting up again in a minute.
Why? What's the hold up? You know who.
Was Was he notoriously hard to work with, William Hartnell?
That console is so like 1950s looking.
Wow, look at it.
Okay, we're going back a couple years.
Can I see your pass, sir? Sydney Newman.
Who's in the name? Better than any Max Shaw.
>> Still need to see your pass, sir. To hell with it.
That's not the way we do things at the BBC, SIR. YOU DON'T SAY.
I DON'T KNOW WHO SYDNEY NEWMAN IS, but Frank Cox is always delightful.
So, we've got a great big thumbing audience for Grandstand, but we lose them for Jukebox Jury, right? Right. I've got a gap to plug. How about another Dickens?
How about another Dickens? Fustian, frowsty, and all less polite words beginning with F. I've got a word for you, though. Fun.
Fun. You heard of fun, Mervyn? We need stuff to keep the sports fans hooked, and the kids, too. Competitive tiddlywinks. You know what I'm talking about. Science fiction.
>> My favorite. It was last time I took a look. With juvenile boys, perhaps?
I like it. I mean, I like it, too.
So, we're we're literally seeing how Doctor Who came to be.
I love that.
What did they say? You're only a production assistant, dear. It's a bit of a leap.
Giving myself a year, Jackie. Get on in television or get out. Look, what do I know? I spend my time trying not to bump into the camera.
But don't pack in yet, Verity. Softly, softly, eh? Verity.
>> You've got a What? Redford. Oh, Redford.
I don't even know the history of it.
Just certain things. Oh, Lord, it's on, isn't it?
>> What? The space shot. The Soviets, Valentina what's-it. First woman in space. God, yes.
So interesting that the first woman to travel around the moon just got back.
She just got home.
Hello. Verity, Sydney. Hello, stranger.
We want to do a science fiction serial.
Legitimate stuff, though. No tin robots or BEMs.
BEMs? BEMs.
>> Bug-eyed monsters. You know, mutations and brains in a glass jar, that kind of crap. It's going to run all year long.
So, good-looking guy, good-looking gal.
Uh-huh.
Plus an older man, quirky. They travel about space and time.
>> That's a lovely idea. Very lovely idea.
But uh we're not We we We definitely are not avoiding any bug-eyed monsters.
So, what about the other man, the quirky character? He's a doctor. A doctor?
>> Mhm. Mhm. The doctor.
So, what do you think?
Doctor Who.
I don't want you to be my assistant again, kid. I want you to produce it.
Produce it?
>> Sure. We've never had a female producer here. Sit down.
>> Okay, well, that's nice. You're just what this place needs. Someone with piss and vinegar in their veins. Thanks.
I think. Yeah, I think.
>> a show called Pathfinders for ITV. We had an old guy as the hero.
Grumpy old guy. That's what we want here.
Is the doctor?
We want a zany grumpy old guy.
No one rung?
Not since you last asked.
>> You've only been out of work a couple of weeks.
>> Well, I'm not built for lazing around, am I? What about that play? Another Red Army part, no fear. It's all they ever offer me. Crooks and perishing sergeant majors. Oh, just wait. You're going to get a groundbreaking role soon.
My grandfather is a funny Don't do that.
He's got a face like a funny alien. Stop it.
Bloody rubbish. Bill, not in front of Judith. My grandfather is a funny I said stop it. Why are you always so grumpy, Grandpa? Yeah, why are you so mean?
Judith Pooty, darling, I can't you say Bill go after her. I told the girl once, what's wrong with her? Floppy ears.
And David Bradley is so good at making me not like him.
I'm legitimate legitimate character actor of the stage and film. This is variety.
I only asked. Hey, hey.
And an alcoholic apparently.
How about Leslie French? He didn't want this. He gave us a polite no. Cyril Cusack? A less polite no.
I think you're in my office. Rex Tucker, I'm looking after Doctor Who. Pending the appointment of the permanent producer. Mhm. Oh, is he with you? It's her.
>> at him. Yeah.
I keep coming back to Hugh David.
Not old enough for the doctor surely.
Well, we don't want Grandpa Moses, do we? We need someone who can play. You can kick him out if you want.
We need someone like Frank Morgan in The Wizard of Oz. He's dead and American.
>> I said like. Yeah, not not specifically that guy. Good grief.
Perhaps we should all sleep on it. After all, it took the months to find Scarlett O'Hara.
I didn't think it would they should be welcomed with open arms.
Is it right you were Sydney's production assistant on the other channel?
>> Yes. So, this is quite a promotion. You think?
>> Apparently.
Bound to ruffle a few feathers. If feathers don't ruffle, nothing flies.
Ooh.
Rex is going to act as a sort of mentor to you.
>> can't have two captains.
Sydney obviously thinks he's got the right person for the job. Someone with piss and vinegar in their veins. Did he say that? He's very blunt. He is.
Look, all I'm saying is dear look Yeah, don't call >> Verity Yeah, don't call her dear.
Experience is not a dirty word. Don't fight us. Don't fight us. warm beer in with your mixture just for the time being.
Well, he's going to set up a meeting. He says it's a smashing role.
The BBC? Yeah.
And it's for kiddies.
Oh, that's going to totally make him not want to take it.
As mean as he was to his granddaughter.
Imagine kids beloving the doctor and he just can't stand them.
It would really make me sad if I found out that the first doctor was like not a cool dude.
The caveman script is the only one worth you to go with.
>> Right. And where are we shooting?
We don't have locations.
>> Studio D. Oh god, not there.
We can't do anything there. It's a broom cupboard. It's smaller on the inside.
It's the wrong shape and the sprinklers go off when it gets hot.
Well, you'll make it brilliantly, won't you? Oh, I see. Simple as that. Yep, you got to make do. Never work.
It does. Spoiler alert.
When do we start?
Don't be fooled, Horace. Inside I'm shaking like a leaf. Oh, yeah. By the skin of my bloody teeth. First Indian director this place has ever had. So, we've got to stick together, haven't we?
>> Yes. Make our little show work. That'll teach them. Who? The old guard.
>> Yeah, be a success.
I overheard a couple of old Horace standing by the tea urn. They said, "Well, she didn't get here standing up, did she?" Of course, that's what they would say.
And how else could he get a promotion like this? A promotion like what? I'm trying to recreate the Stone Age with air fix glue and bloody baker foil.
We're trying. Yes. Yes.
>> Sorry.
Well, here's to us. The posh wank.
And the pushy Jewish bird.
Yeah, we could have our own series. We do. Yeah, as a matter of fact.
You're the director, son?
I'd rather have a cradle the pair of you. Right, let's That's great, though.
I'm not sure about this. Apart from anything else, I don't want to take on another long run. Would you like >> Weekly, bloody rep. Whiskey and soda, choppy choppy. Choppy choppy?
>> Whose idea was all this?
>> Sydney Newman, but so many people have been at the birth of the thing, we'd be here all day.
The music.
The scripts I need to see. Scripts.
>> They're going wonderfully. Wonderfully.
>> Oh, right in the trash can. So wonderfully.
They're throwing everything at it. State of the art facilities. How do they get it back? The flying saucer or something?
Ours is a space and time machine that can blend in with its background.
>> it's covered in invisible paint or something?
>> No, no, no, no. It adapts to suit its environment.
>> stuck in one shape. A police box. Police box? How gorgeous would that be? An ordinary 20th century object on the surface of an alien planet. Fantastic.
Fantastic.
And wait till you hear the music. We're using the latest technology.
The Tardis sound effect?
How'd they even come up with that?
Seriously?
It's what you do so well, Mr. Hartnell.
Stern and scary.
But with a twinkle. Yep, to his face.
It's HG Wells meets Father Christmas.
That's the Doctor.
>> Doctor Who? Exactly.
You're a brick for doing this.
Contractually obliged, darling.
>> No, no, I mean the show. Her hair is huge.
What do you make of him? Wonderful screen actor. He frightens the life out of me. I mean, me, too.
Are you okay? Scared to death. Me, too.
Goodbye, real world.
I mean, fair enough. You're in for an adventure in space and time.
Susan and I are cut off from our own people, but one day we shall get back.
Who's Susan?
My granddaughter. I'm your granddaughter.
Let her do lines with you.
I play a funny old man who lives inside a magic box. Like a jack-in-the-box, Grandpa. Well, a little like that, yes.
But this is a machine in disguise.
A time machine.
Do you know how to fly a time machine, Grandpa?
Oh, yes. Yes, of course I do.
>> See, this is better.
Off to distant planets where the doctor will have all kinds of adventures. The doctor? The doctor.
>> healed man I'm playing. Does he make people better? You hope.
Yeah, he's kind of like, I can't answer that.
The set for the machine, TARDIS, when is it arriving? There's uh been a delay.
It won't do. It just won't do. I I don't know how I'm expected to cope with all the technical gibberish I have to spout without the bloody set to work on. I I I need time to plot out all the buttons.
>> Yeah, no, I get him. I hear you.
All those switches and dials, I I need to know what they all do. What if I press something to open the doors and the next week I use it to blow us all up?
I like that, actually. Continuity.
They all we must discuss my character.
Was that twinkle you talked about, the thing that made me so so right for it?
Uh oh, Sydney. Now, let me introduce you to Mr. William Hartnell.
>> Right. A doctor. YOU WERE IN BRIGHTON ROCK. WOW, WHAT A PERFORMANCE. It should have led to much bigger and better things, you know, but um I wasn't blessed. What the hell are you talking about? Of course you're blessed. You're going to be Doctor Who, aren't you?
>> Yeah, I mean, he doesn't know yet though.
One day I came into ITV. I got an idea, I said, "The Avengers." "What's it about?" they said. "HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW?" I said. WHAT A TITLE.
POP, POP, POP. YOU, SIR, are going to make a huge impact with this character.
I am?
Only a movie star could do it. So nuanced.
So many layers.
>> Yeah, he's good. Sydney's good.
And these kids, you couldn't be in safer hands.
Pop, pop, pop.
Brilliant.
Thank you so much, Sydney. You've no idea what a difference it makes. Be a producer, Verity. Find a way to deal with this stuff.
Yeah, that's your job.
>> You're way out of your depth. Yeah, he did you a solid, but you got to figure this [ __ ] out.
You got this, girl.
Yeah, get him. What are you doing?
Being patient. You can't stay here.
>> Now, what shall we talk about? I've got all day.
The Old Curiosity Shop, the Roman Forum, Symphonies in Pencil and Ink. So, surely you can turn your hand to my teeny little time machine.
>> Yeah, get to it, buddy.
You are a very trying woman. Then I'll get out of your hair. It's literally your job, sir.
Maybe the muse will be with you.
Oh, he's coming up with it.
Very well.
Here's your bloody Tardis.
I mean, he got the console, right?
Wow.
Turned out rather well, isn't it? Too bloody big. Oh, even the walls.
He did that in 10 seconds. How annoying.
Could you pass me my script, please?
>> Oh, look at the light in there, though.
That's great. He says he won't have his teeth blacked out, though. Duggie, it's 100,000 BC.
>> He says he got them whitened to get onto the telly. Well, well, does it matter?
We only see his bloody shadow. I'll do it. I don't mind.
Yeah, let the guy who wants to do it.
God, it's hot in here.
Can we do something about the heat? I thought you'd be used to it.
Well, like but that like won't the power go out if they try to do anything about the heat?
Did they say it? It's bigger on the inside?
We're coming up on three.
It's kind of a mess. Did they block this out ahead of time?
Move the bloody camera. Oh, chaos. Oh, chaos.
I just like to I know this is absurd.
It's blue.
I made up TARDIS with initials, time and relative dimensions in space. I thought you'd both realize when you came inside and saw the different dimensions Woah. It's chaos. It's chaos.
Oh, [ __ ] This is not off to a great start.
It's normally the best stuff that struggles.
Wish I knew what bloody dimension I was in.
It feels like it's like really dark and angry, actually.
Not like the fun stuff that we have now.
In the beginning.
Let's go to lunch.
Let's go to lunch.
Did you like it? Did you hate it?
Oh boy, just waiting for Sydney to say something.
We should fire the Perry.
That good, huh?
Take out the reference to the future time they've come from. It's too specific. It's Doctor Who, remember? And yeah. The old guy's too nasty. He should be cuter, funnier. Uh-huh.
Did you like any of it? Not much. Hate the opening titles. No, just because it's new.
>> Hey, hey, I do new, remember? Uh-huh.
It's too scary for the kids.
I mean >> we were trying to scare the scared, not traumatize them. Change it. Over my dead body. Oh, there you go.
No, no, Verity, you stand up for it.
It'll cost, and they'll crucify me for it. What? Do the whole thing again.
Oh, wow.
Nothing was salvageable. I'm not right for the part. Just just not right for it. It It is me. You were right. We've made the Doctor too abrasive. Yeah. We need much more of you in him. Much more charm and warmth and twinkle. You knew it. I couldn't see it.
She's good. You sure you've got the right man? Of course I am.
I'm I'm I'm frightened, you see. I never really done anything like this before. Good. The pressure, the schedule, and all those ruddy words.
It's a good challenge to have.
I'm here for you, Bill.
Every step.
Right.
I've got to tell the others now. Time and tide wait for no man, eh? Time and space, Bill, and they wait for no woman, either.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to do that, either.
Okay, good. I'll tell them we can make the transmission date.
Ooh, okay.
Now, it's making me curious about that first episode. We're also trying one of Tony Hancock's writers, Terry Nation.
You got a script?
>> Yes, it's good.
>> What's it about?
>> Robots. No, no, they're not robots.
>> Rule one, Daleks are robots. Rule two, >> No bug-eyed monsters, I know, but >> Oh, they're coming, sir.
Send it straight up to me, then we'll see.
Is it Is it the Daleks?
This time in a few weeks, episode one will have aired.
Braveheart, darling, I think we'll be a smash. Fingers crossed, we could do with a bit of luck.
Seems like this is all running on bubblegum and toothpicks.
Hideous, machine-like creatures.
Lens on a flexible shaft.
Acts.
Oh my god.
Exterminate.
>> Exterminate.
Exterminate.
It is with deep regret that we announce that President Kennedy is dead. Mhm.
The identity of the assassin remains unconfirmed. I didn't think that that would play into this at all.
It was very good, Bill.
Did anybody watch it because of the news?
They'll all be watching the news. Yeah.
Horrible timing.
But spoilers, it works out completely fine.
Eventually.
She's way over budget. I'm afraid Miss Lambert doesn't know what she's doing. I don't think that's the case.
Now, these silly robots.
She's not writing the scripts.
Kill it, Sydney.
Kill Doctor Who.
I know it doesn't happen, but it still hurts.
Sydney wants to see you, Verity.
Oh, boy. Do an episode of going back to try to save John F. Kennedy.
Blame it on the Daleks.
It's my fault. I promoted you too soon.
That's not true.
God damn caveman. And then these Daleks.
Daleks.
>> Exactly what I wanted to avoid. Cheap trash.
>> read the scripts?
>> Yes. Really? Well, enough to know garbage when I see it. Jesus, Daleks.
Daleks. Whatever. Oh, boy.
All they know how to do is lash out. The Doctor and his friends turn up and try to make them see differently. To understand other people and make PEACE.
IT'S GOOD STUFF.
>> It is good stuff.
>> It's strong stuff, Sydney, and I really, truly believe in it. Good for you, Verity.
Well, I wanted someone with piss and vinegar. You sure did.
I think we've got something really special here, Sydney. A knockout. We've just got to hold our nerve.
Okay.
I'll talk to the higher-ups. Okay.
Thanks.
And I want to repeat repeat episode 1 before episode 2. No one was watching because of the assassination. Oh, I see.
>> Yes. This is Kennedy's fault. No, Lee Harvey Oswald.
You better be right about these Daleks.
Oh, she's right about Daleks. Let me be very clear, young lady. Your neck's on the block.
Ah.
>> Yeah, come on. Got to move on. It's like a rabbit hutch in here.
He's inside.
This building already feels like it's on fire. I can't even imagine how hot it is in there.
What the hell is that?
Monster for the next story.
What's in Quindragon egg was they can't take over the universe might be able to whip up a decent omelette.
Is that what you envision, girl? Ooh.
Roads are in court. They look great. I mean they made them with whatever they could find. I totally get that.
Now without move our hands off us and follow my directions.
Immediate claim. I throw them all. I'm so giddy right now.
I sent IMMEDIATE CLAIM FIRE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY USED TO KILL PEOPLE. I'm used to them being zapped and seeing their skeleton.
Well, everyone, meet the Daleks.
Terrifying. I love it.
Yeah. Really creepy.
Perfect.
Yeah, girl. I'm with you, but also you believe in it.
You and your companions need a drug to stay alive. We have no gloves.
Drugs. You said gloves. Yeah, they have to be able to edit that stuff out.
Because the Daleks are nasty and you must need to have special gloves to touch them.
Yes.
You know things like that because you're Doctor Who.
Yeah, it's just anytime you make a mistake, just try to play along as though it was supposed to happen.
You won't would what I saw on the bus this morning. It's thrilling. Sydney wants you, Verity.
Uh-oh.
What'd she do wrong now?
Too successful?
What did you think of the Daleks?
10 million viewers for your bug-eyed monsters.
That's great.
10 million.
Wait, that's really good, right? So?
What do I know about it?
WELL DONE, KID. YAY!
WHAT A DELIGHT FOR HER TO see kids pretending to be Daleks the very next day. What were you doing on the bus?
Getting in touch with our audience. Our great, big, enormous, bloody audience.
Yay! Don't fall, please, dear god.
Quickly, Charles, and check the fornicator.
Fornicator?
Okay, I think we better hold it there, please.
Back to positions again.
Are you having fun?
Just look at this.
General de Gaulle Daleks.
No, no, no.
We've really got something here. Pop culture. They love us. Mhm.
Something the matter, Bill? You should be more careful, sweetheart, throwing your money around like that. This is an insecure profession, you know. We should all bear that in mind. Splashing out on your togs all the time, you don't know you're really born. I'm not a child.
I'll spend it how I like.
Yeah.
Grumpy old man.
You're right, of course, Bill. None of us knows how long this is going to last.
No one's irreplaceable.
So, I wonder was Bill replaced because he wasn't getting the lines correct?
Aw.
Oh, Jesus.
Here, thank you so much for the flowers.
Aw.
Sorry to see you go, son. So, what's next for you? I've been offered a passage to India. One way?
Bill, I hope you never change.
Sure you won't stay? Do some more with us? Past is new. He's leaving already.
Couldn't have done it without you, darling.
Aw.
Darling.
Cute.
You will be Strike lightning. Only You will be annihilated.
And we have these. Man and boy, I've been at this lark, but I've never known anything like incredible.
No one's irreplaceable, eh?
Up this way, you'll be running the place.
Oh.
Maybe.
I have no idea. I don't know the story of Verity. Dear Uncle Who. Uncle Who?
Uncle Who?
I've got my physics O level coming up and I need your help. I don't know why they think I can help them. So, you think you're the doctor?
Doctor Who?
Can I please have your autograph?
Now then, what's this? Teacher said it'll be all right.
Thank you.
Please.
Doctor, when are them Daleks coming back? Daleks? Never.
>> over the ruddy world.
It's what they do best, isn't it?
Oh, wow.
Oh, goodness.
They all want to meet the doctor. That's so stinking cute.
>> all get back to the Tardis.
What's this What's this? Look out. LOOK OUT. RUN. EXTERMINATE.
FINALLY, something I adore David Bradley in.
It's not too late, you know. I've made up my mind. They can rewrite this stuff in the shop.
>> It's time to move on, Bill. There's lots of other things I want to do. Oh, she's leaving.
There's more to life than just screaming at nasty monsters. Let's not always talk about me. Yeah.
Aw.
Goodbye, Susan.
Goodbye, my dear.
And he just left her behind.
Doesn't like farewells, does he?
Just stepping off for a minute, Waris.
Waris?
Waris. He's been doing that a lot lately. Oh, his mind is going.
Come on, love. Why don't you get your head down? We can go through this in the morning. No, no. Got to get them in. Got you. What is he doing, running lines?
Maybe it's time you thought about moving on, love.
You're shattered all the time. I I can't, even if I wanted to. They're all relying on me. Hundreds of people, aren't they? And all those kiddies out there.
Aw. Are you?
You can't have Doctor Who without Doctor Who, can you?
So, that's how they came up with three generations.
Fortis, what galaxy is that in?
The Aesop galaxy, Chesterton.
I mean, I don't have a great memory, either, and I can't even imagine when I get older as to how awful it's going to be.
And he's all of a sudden saying crazy names and crazy lines and saying crazy things, and it's Wow.
To hear a Dalek saying that in that moment, that's crazy.
He was not very well.
You dear.
Nothing serious? Not in the short term.
It's um arteriosclerosis.
It's the hardening of the arteries.
He smokes too much.
Drinks too much. Mhm.
And these days, the only exercise he gets is walking the dog.
Plus doing Doctor Who virtually all year.
Do you think he should stop?
Yes.
He loves the program. He's so proud of it. And all of you, you should hear him.
If there's anything you can do to lift the burden from his shoulders, you know, let him slow down a little.
How how do they do that?
He's the lead of the show. I'll have a quiet word with my successor.
She's leaving.
Actually, I'm glad to have the chance to talk to you.
>> You're my rock, Verity. You You know that. You're my rock.
>> know about that.
Since that day you first started telling me about Doctor Who, I I've I've been spellbound. But look at us now, eh? Our asses are in butter.
What did you want to tell me? She can't tell him now.
Not after that.
Ladies and gentlemen, Verity, best goddamn appointment I've ever made.
>> Aw.
For she's a jolly good fellow.
And so say all of us.
Yeah, it's so hard when everybody else moves on.
Bill, I wanted to say thank you for everything you've done.
I'm in demand. It's all down to you.
>> Oh, nonsense. In no small measure, Bill, Doctor Who has made me.
Why does it have to change? Why do things always have to change? Why can't we just go on as we are?
I hate change, too.
Just like I hate goodbyes.
What am I going to do without you?
Till we meet again.
Aw.
So, at the beginning, was that his last day?
And then you flick the switch and the doors open. No, no. Can't do that. I'd have to move around to the other side.
That's where the uh door switch is. Does it matter? Of course, it matters. Yeah, I mean I agree with him. We'll work around it. You move where you like, Mr. Hartnell. Thank you. I will.
>> his TARDIS. Okay, top of the The glass cylinder should be going up and down.
The ship is in flight. Right. Yes, sorry. He'll tell you guys how to do this, okay? Just listen to him.
Any Anybody know how to make it go? Oh, for Christ's sake, doesn't anyone know HOW TO DO ANYTHING?
OOH, GOSH.
Sorted it myself.
Aw.
True Doctor, he knows how to get the TARDIS started.
They've all gone.
None of them ever understood. Not even young Susan or or or over Vic Vic Vicky.
Chesterton Chesterton Oh, God.
Perhaps I should go back to my own time.
But I I can't.
I can't.
Oh, no.
I am Yeah, yeah, I hear you. I can't go on.
He's become so difficult to work with and he's lying.
>> I hear you.
Yeah, I mean just got to pull the band-aid off at that point.
So that's that, I suppose.
What do you mean? Well, we can't have Doctor Who without Doctor Who, can we?
You know about that, we could find a way to keep it going.
Oh, he's got an idea.
Now, pop, pop, pop.
I hope you don't think it's presumptuous of me to ask for this meeting, Sydney.
>> Presumptuous? Hell, no, Bill.
I was going to ask you to come in, as it happens.
Oh, yes?
Yeah.
Yeah. Okay, how are we going to handle this?
Things can't go on the way they are.
Exactly, Sydney. I'm I'm committed to Doctor Who, 100% committed, but well, I need more time off.
Bloody schedule would kill a man half my age.
>> Uh-huh. Yeah, that's not what he's doing. He's replacing you.
We're 100% committed to >> They're glad to hear it. But we're looking at ways of refreshing regenerating >> Oh, regenerating. Quite right. Oh, hell, Bill, there's no easy way of saying this.
I'm You're out.
We want Doctor Who to go on. Yes.
But not with you.
Like I said, things have got to change.
Perfect time to seize. Perfect time.
I see.
Who have you got in mind? You're a hard act to follow, Bill. And he first stops at Sydney. You know me better.
You approve? Oh, yes.
Great. Let me see.
Actually Trump. I don't know what he looks like. Actually Trump.
I'm so sorry, Bill.
Fortune, good night. Smile once more.
Turn thy wheel. Huh?
King Lear.
I did it once.
Has that committed to memory, huh?
It's crazy that he pulled up to a police box. And there's the police officer.
Where is Doctor Who?
Sorry. Very sorry, officer. You're a mean aunt, you? But you're Doctor Who.
Wait till I tell the kids. They'd love me, love you.
Well, it's uh been agreed by um by mutual consent that I should uh pack it in.
All right.
Give it up.
Just retire.
I don't know how you let go. I really don't.
I think it's for the best. You can't go on like this. And I've made my mark.
Shown everyone I can do it.
Mhm. I'm sure it leads to lots more interesting stuff.
Mhm?
Sure.
How do you tell him he's done?
He doesn't want to be done.
I I I don't want to go.
I don't want to go.
Well then, who's who?
I won't lie to you. I'm scared stiff.
You'll be fine. I told them, you know, there's only one man in England who can take over. Oh.
Couldn't get him?
One last time.
Okay, positions everyone, please.
And roll to record in 15. I hate regenerations. I really do.
Thank you, Sydney.
Oh, spitting image.
>> Man.
I want you to belong somewhere. Believe me, my dear, your future lies with David and not with a silly old buffer like me.
One day, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties.
Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.
Oh.
That cut right off.
Okay.
There's no credits or anything.
Husband did a really good job by cutting that right off.
Okay, let's talk about it.
Well, I'm incredibly happy that I watched that. Um definitely I I didn't know anything about how Doctor Who came to be and how hard it was for them to get it going.
And I especially didn't know anything about William Hartnell. And it's funny when everyone was just like, "Oh, you don't like David Bradley, huh?"
Like you're probably going to watch something that's going to change your mind. So, immediately when I saw his name pop up, I was like, "Okay." I was like, "I get to see David Bradley do something different." And when he's yelling at Judy, I'm just like, "Is Is he This man ever Does he ever ever roll where he's not yelling at somebody or he's like talking to the production people?" Like And but I will tell you like he made me care. He really did. And I really enjoyed his portrayal.
Um and you know, the I don't want to go.
Obviously you're reminding me of David.
And then seeing Matt there and like the passing of the baton and just I was not aware that the first episode aired the same day that John F. Kennedy was shot.
That literally could have killed momentum if they didn't replay it and then have the Dalek episode the next week because Daleks legit are in pop culture. Like as soon as they had the little cartoon at the top of the newspaper, lights out. Like it's it's a pop culture reference. Like yeah.
I love that I didn't realize that Verity was probably like the first female producer that at the BBC.
Um and that uh I didn't realize that Waris like was also probably the first Indian director for BBC television and like those two having groundbreaking, you know, roles in making Doctor Who is uh so apropos for Doctor Who, is it not?
Is it not?
Well, I'm happy that I watched that cuz definitely it brought on the tears for sure and great performances.
You know, not knowing anything about William Hartnell, I don't know if it was a great portrayal or not. Um I love that they had him at the end so I could see actually what that doctor was like.
It's quite a different show and I'm sure the doctors that watch it now, former doctors, are like couldn't even imagine where the show would go and I mean I love that that it evolved over time. It evolved with the audience and you know, it it's it was so cool. I can't believe black and white though. Kind of like irritates me cuz I know like I said like the TARDIS looked like it was 50s. It definitely looked like 1950s, 1960s, you know, uh machinery. But like that that they didn't have color back then because those sets were amazing and like everyone looked great and I mean it's imagine if it was in color. That would be wonderful.
Well, I'm very happy that I watched this. Uh everyone always tells me to bring tissues so I never really even know what that means now. Like, do they expect me to cry? Do most people cry? Or is it just like, yeah, it's Angela, she's probably going to cry. Oh, look, it's Doctor Who and I cried.
Another one. Another one.
You got me again. You got me again.
Uh I will be watching the two episodes that come after this before the 50th anniversary special, and I know to not look at the screen until a specific point. Uh I like have been trying to reiterate that because some of these people don't watch the intros and the outros, and I'm like, no, I'm sad and I don't But I just want everyone to like know that like Nathaniel has procured a very like he he he's told me exactly what I need to watch preparing for uh the 50th anniversary and I guess beyond because there's a Christmas episode after the 50th anniversary, which kind of sounds fun. Kind of excited about that. So, guys, if you want to watch my full reaction to this, it will be available on my Patreon. Uh in the meantime, like, subscribe, and leave a comment down below.
I mean, it depending on like what era you were from. If you were from New Who and watched this, like, I'm sure it like felt like an origin story, but like if you were somebody who was around for the beginning of Who, and like like did it feel like a nostalgia trip to you? And like just I don't know. Like I feel like different generations would feel differently about it. And and to me, it was like a little time capsule, as it were. You know, it just had this beautiful nugget of history and how hard it was to get it made, and yet how easy it was to design the TARDIS. It was like, all right, poke some holes here, here, here's this, that, there's your TARDIS.
Like, she waited with patience for that.
Hm.
Anyway.
That was great. Um I Who was the actress that played her?
Who played Verity?
Jessica Raine.
I feel like I know her from Don't anyone freak out. I'm not going to do Jessica Raine.
Uh yeah, she was in Hide. Okay, it was her. Yeah.
Uh she's a fantastic actress. I would great choice to play Verity. Um I think I don't know if I'm wanting to watch um any classic Who because of it.
But I do feel like um a part of my I mean cuz there's so much to watch. Just I still get people asking me if I'm going to watch Torchwood or The Sarah Jane Adventures.
And I can't possibly fathom finding time. But it Doctor Who is such an animal that like not having all of that information is kind of like you're you're you're in the dark a lot. So it was nice to kind of get that and you you know at least know who one doctor is. I know I'm expecting especially for a 50th anniversary to like see faces. Cuz even when they were in the last episode popping up I was like I don't know which one that is. I have no idea. So uh maybe I need flashcards or something.
Guess the Who. Who's Who?
He was right there. Anyway, guys come back here for the webisodes. Those will be free on my Patreon. Um and then we will have the uh 50th anniversary special after that, the Christmas special, and then a break. Cuz Nathaniel needs a break.
So do I. But it'll only be a week. But uh yeah, look look for the webisodes over on my Patreon and then uh come back here next week for the 50th anniversary special. And in the meantime guys, I'll see you.
