Elderly Black Veteran Attacked by Bigot at His Front Door

[00:00:00]A Florida man attacks an 80-year-old black male. Now, he's charged with a hate crime. Put it up full mast. Very sad story.

[00:00:10]37-year-old Kyle Parish is accused of attacking an 80-year-old man, a veteran named Dr. Otis Lane. Dr. Lane was outside of his home last month when this happened. Authorities say Kyle knocked on the door of Dr. Otis uh and his home is in the Villages and was captured on a doorbell camera. Lane told Fox 35 he thought Kyle was a maintenance worker and went outside where he was confronted and assaulted.

[00:00:47]At that time, quote, there are words that can't explain why a person would come to your house, target you, ring your doorbell, lure you outside, and attack you.

[00:01:01]Dr. Lane said, quote, he was very angry and told me that he didn't want my kind living here and I had better leave.

[00:01:16]Quote, I struggled to understand him and asked him to explain. End quote.

[00:01:23]That's according to an affidavit obtained by Fox 35 News.

[00:01:27]Parish punched Dr. Lane in the face.

[00:01:30]Quote, he stepped out in front of me and he hit me so quickly. I didn't have an option to defend myself or to respond. End quote. Dr. Lane told Fox 35 News. He told Villages News he never had a cross word with Mr. Parish or his father who was a maintenance worker.

[00:01:52]Atlanta Black Star confirmed Kyle Parish, 37, He now in the Sumter County jail with no bond as of Thursday.

[00:02:03]He has been there since April 30th, days after authorities say he attacked the 80-year-old Dr. Lane.

[00:02:14]It appears that Parish was granted a $20,000 bond. However, that has since been revoked after the incident was classified as a hate crime.

[00:02:25]Quote, "Listen, I was born in the South under Jim Crow laws.

[00:02:30]And I've had to deal with racism all my life," Dr. Lane reflected.

[00:02:35]Quote, "I didn't get to be Dr. Otis C.

[00:02:38]Lane by accident.

[00:02:40]It was through sweat and tears.

[00:02:42]And in some cases, I was made to feel degraded as a second-class citizen.

[00:02:48]And I reached this level in my life.

[00:02:51]The last thing I would think would be a young man, a young white man, who would come into my development and target me and assault me."

[00:03:02]End quote. Villages News reported that Dr. Lane is not only a veteran, but he's also a retired educator, who is active in leadership at his church, and other organizations. Keep his picture up for a moment.

[00:03:24]You had a random act of violence that's [clears throat] not so random after all. It is targeted. It is specific. It is built on the idea that somehow the guy who attacked him is superior to the victim who was attacked.

[00:03:48]But the reality is there's only one inferior person in this equation.

[00:03:55]That's the individual who believes at any point that their humanity is more important than the man next to them.

[00:04:12]We have another menace to society. We have another angry white man lashing out for God knows what. How many chances are these angry white men going to get?

[00:04:22]According to reports, he had been menacing towards his own family. He created he he completed a pre-trial intervention to drop domestic battery charges. He had to go to parenting counseling. So, this is a person who has been troubled, who has been violent, according to reports, previously, but has been given chance after chance to inflict harm on others. And so, I hope that this time he's actually held to account, but it is inexcusable and it is inexplicable. The anger and rage that people like him have when this country has never been more positioned in recent generations than to catapult and ensure that people like him get ahead, whether they deserve to or not. That's right.
