Leviticus 19:32 commands believers to honor and respect the elderly, connecting this act to honoring God Himself; while society readily recognizes children's vulnerability, the elderly similarly face declining health, strength, and abilities, yet often receive less attention, making their wisdom and life experience valuable and deserving of care, patience, and dignity.

>> [music] [music] >> Hey everyone, this is your 5-minute daily devotional. Today's scripture verse is coming from Leviticus chapter 19 verse 32. It reads as follows. Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord. I was at the beach one day a year or two ago and I had just come in from sitting and relaxing on the beach and I was at my car in the parking lot. I was at the back of my car I was sort of sitting at the back of my car cleaning up. I wanted to take a walk on the beach so I was getting my sneakers and getting the sand off and just kind of taking my time. This large candy apple red pickup truck, like a 250 or maybe even a 350, I don't know, but it was a huge pickup truck pulled into the parking lot. The elderly man driving it must have zeroed in on me from afar because he drove that thing right next to me, parked that big truck right next to my car, hopped out with his elderly wife you know slowly following him and without so much as a hello pulled his phone out, kind of handed it to me and was like, "How do I work the app?" There are apps now for parking at the beach and it kind of made me chuckle a little bit because most of us know that those who are you know aging gracefully, maybe in the you know their 70s or 80s, they are not technology friendly. They don't like technology. It's just sort of not their thing. And so I you know very patiently kindly walked him through the app of how to park at the beach him and his wife you know they were good they were on their way to a restaurant to get something to eat. It's funny though I was like maybe you should put 2 hours in the app just so if you guys go over, you know, you're covered for the parking.
You won't get a ticket or anything." And he's like, "No, no, no. I'm only paying for an hour."
>> [laughter] >> He's like, "I'm only paying for an hour." So, we hooked him up for an hour.
He went his way, I went my way. I came back, they were gone. Years ago, I mean, like years ago, I learned this thought, or maybe this theory, if you want to call it that, called the arc of life, that kind of believes that babies and the elderly are nearest to eternity because, you know, babies have just entered this world and the elderly are about to go home. And I think it's interesting because I think a lot of times we have no problem believing that for kids. I mean, even if you don't believe in God, you recognize that kids are special. They're vulnerable. They need us. They're, you know, just they're very innocent. And so, for the most part, human nature, we take care of kids. We recognize that kids need us, that they are in a vulnerable state, that they can't do it without us. But if I can say this gently, I do sort of think that as a society, especially Western society, we don't do the same thing with the elderly. Don't get me wrong, kids are in a vulnerable state.
They do need us in taking care of them.
It's absolutely God's will, and it's a joy, and it's a pleasure, and it's a privilege. Their little bodies and brains are forming and changing, and they are in a very vulnerable state.
They absolutely need us. But I think we forget that it's also happening with the elderly. Their bodies and their brains are changing, and the older they get, the more vulnerable they get, the more they need us, too. Our verse today comes from what is sometimes known as the holiness code of the law, which we find in Leviticus chapter 17 through 26.
Leviticus 19 specifically sometimes called the ethical heart of the law because it deals with holiness and daily living. In that chapter, we find the very famous verse of scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself" in verse 18, but we also see our verse today that we are to honor our elders. And God actually connects it to honoring him. He says that if we honor and respect our elders, we are actually doing that to him. We are revering him. Friends, I think sometimes we forget about the elderly, not intentionally, but I think sometimes we're just not thinking about that particular group, and they are very important to God. They are in the unique position of having a lot of knowledge and wisdom because of life learned, because of lived experiences, what they've already been through in life that we actually probably haven't through yet. But they're also in the unique position of having all that knowledge, yet they're growing vulnerable perhaps in their health, in their strength, in their finances, and their abilities. Honor the elderly, friends. Be kind, cook a meal, pay a bill, help them with errands, take them to their appointments, mow the yard.
Just help, just be there with them. Help them with technology. Just be there for them. It honors them, and they deserve that honor for what they've lived through in this life, and that honors God. And also, God willing, guess what?
We also will be elderly one day, so we should keep that in mind. Let's pray.
Heavenly Father God, please help us to realize higher in the area of [music] just taking care of the elderly in our society, God, especially Western society, God. Help us to honor and bless our parents, our grandparents, Lord, [music] you know, great aunts and uncles, just you know, our neighbors, church members. Help us, Lord, in this area to do just little things that maybe they can't do, God, but that would bless them and honor them, God. You say [music] when we honor them, Lord, we honor you, God, and we always want to honor you, God. We also just want [music] to be good to people, Lord. Help us to love, Lord, and may you love through us, God, and may we not forget this group. We love you, God, and we thank you. In Jesus name.
