OB-GYN physicians provide comprehensive women's healthcare including obstetric care (pregnancy, childbirth, and delivery) and gynecologic care (annual exams, cancer prevention, and surgical procedures), with a strong emphasis on preventative health measures to detect and treat cancers such as breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancers before they spread; physicians in this field often develop long-term patient relationships spanning from young adulthood through menopause, and career paths can include starting as a radiologic technologist while pursuing medical education.

Tama Franklin, MDHinzugefügt:
Hi, my name is Tamra Franklin. I work here at CoxHealth as a medical physician, an obstetrician gynecologist. I trained at the University of Missouri Columbia in Columbia, Missouri for my medical degree at the School of Medicine, and I finished my residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. I provide general OB-GYN care, obstetric and gynecologic care for women. Obstetrical care, of course, includes pregnant patients and taking care of them when they're pregnant and delivering them, be it a vaginal delivery or cesarean section.
In my gynecologic practice, I take care of women, do their annual exams, take care of any gynecologic problems, complete office procedures if needed, and do general GYN surgery. I really like that obstetrics and gynecology is a practice where we have a lot of preventative health care.
My heart is in preventing or detecting breast cancers, ovarian, cervical, uterine, cancers, vaginal, vulvar cancers prior to them being able to spread so we can diagnose those, get them to the correct physician for care for cancer care in hopes to cure them of that cancer. I chose OB-GYN because I love obstetrics and delivering babies. It's an honor to be able to deliver someone's child, and it's probably what I get the most joy out of is the obstetric practice. I love the gynecologic care because it makes my job so diverse. I love not being bored, so I do care for OB patients that are pregnant and deliveries and C-sections, but then I also get to take care of them as healthy women and provide them with their gynecologic care over the years from the teen years through the elderly patients, and I love that long-term relationship that I develop, usually from a young adulthood or maybe when they're pregnant through older middle age and menopausal type cares that are needed. I formed a relationship with CoxHealth when I was in high school because I did some research in radiation oncology.
At that time, I was interested in the sciences. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go into medical school or not, so I wanted to get more and more information about medical fields, jobs in the medical field. After high school, I chose to go to a radiology school, actually, because my sister was having her classmates finishing college but not having really great jobs out there, so I decided to go to a certificate program, which was a two-year program at Cox North, and did my radiology training at that time, quite a long time ago. I'm maybe a little older than I look.
So after I became a radiologic technologist, I did help put myself through medical school, taking X-rays and working at Cox North for about 11 years while I was completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry and then my medical degree at University of Missouri Columbia.
At that time, I was able to continue that particular job until I was a second-year medical student, and then at that time I became too busy to work.
After that time, I finished my residency, and then I came back to Cox because I wanted to come back to my roots and join back with CoxHealth and continue my care of patients in the region.
Well, I work a lot, but when I can get away, I really, really enjoy time at the lake. It's very relaxing to me, being on the water and being near the water and just getting away from normal, mundane house chores. It takes you away, it separates you from your life in the city. You get out and enjoy the weather and the sun. I also enjoy something we call family dinner every Wednesday evening.
We host about eight to 15 students that are college age and young adults, and we feed them dinner every week, and so my husband and I just love that, and it's something that we just have grown to love.
