The NFL's expansion of international games from 8 to 10 starting in 2027, combined with the removal of teams' ability to protect home games, creates both opportunities and challenges for franchises like the Washington Commanders. The increased revenue from streaming platforms (Amazon, Netflix) will drive salary cap growth, which benefits teams by softening the financial impact of quarterback contract extensions, while also risking the loss of home crowd advantage for rivalry games played overseas.

The Washington Commanders Just Got GOOD & BAD NEWS From The NFL…Added:
Welcome into the Commander Report by Chat Sports, presented by Prize Picks.
I'm your host, Jack Sperry. And the Washington Commanders just got good and bad news from the National Football League. That's what we're going to be talking about on today's show. Now, before we get into what the good news is and what the bad news is today, make sure you guys always make sure it's sunny in DC on Commander Game Days, at least in your household, with this awesome t-shirt uh drawn up by our merch guy here at Chat Sports Arnold. Uh it's $24.99 on our website right now at chatsports.com/sy.
That link is down there in the comments and description of today's show. Of course, it's in reference to Sunny Styles with that double point celebration with the new commanders uniforms and helmets on there. I think it's a pretty sweet look. So, if you guys want to get yours today, just in time for the start of Commander OTAAS, which begin tomorrow, make sure you go to chatports.com/ssony and pick yours up today. All right, so now let's get into some schedule news for the National Football League here where the NE the league announced an expansion in international games, which will be beginning in the 2027 NFL season. And it's quite a big expansion here. Here you guys can see what Jeremy Fowler from ESPN had to say in his most recent article about it, saying the NFL on Tuesday approved the ability to play as many as 10 international games starting in 2027, up from eight previously. The league also voted to strip teams' ability to protect any home games from international play.
Previously, teams could pro protect two games. So, there's pros and cons to this announcement, guys. We're going to be breaking each one of those down here um throughout the course of today's show.
Uh, but we can really start with the pros when it comes to this. And that starts here with Brett Coleman, who is a big name on NFL YouTube. He does some stuff for the NFL on YouTube, but he also runs his own channels. He said this uh when this news came out a couple weeks ago. This move allows the league to put true marquee matchups and rivalry games overseas if they want. Those big-time matchups translates to the international package becoming unbelievably valuable. they might get 100 million per game from a streaming partner for it. Cap going up again.
Talking of course about the salary cap here in the National Football League.
And it sounds like the next step is the NFL is going to sell 12 to 15 uh uh international package uh international games uh to a streaming platform. Of course, we're moving up to 10. It's going to be in no time here where we have an international game pretty much every single week during the NFL schedule. probably maybe not week one uh in terms of well I'm sure the week one games are going to be here to say but probably the season finale probably won't have an international game but we could be coming to a world here where most of the weeks in the National Football League there's going to be an international game of some kind on Sunday mornings and whatever stream platform picks that up or whether it's a combination of different streaming packages here uh it's going to lead to another salary cap spike we've seen it over the course of the last several years in the National Football League ever since Neielson changed the way that they uh kind of measure their ratings uh to include streaming platforms. Uh and of course the ste the the NFL has been pairing with the with these streaming platforms on Amazon and on Netflix over the last several years. And as a result, we have seen uh the cap here in the National Football League go up exponentially since 2021. The last time the cap actually went down because of the COVID season in 2020 uh went from about 190 million to 182.5 million in 2021. But since then, a $25.7 million increase in 2022, $16.6 million increase in 2023, a $30.6 million increase in 2024, and then uh 23.8 and 22 million increases, respectively, over the last two seasons. And that that's only going to continue, guys, as these streaming platforms continue to get more and more games, includes uh these international games that they're going to be implementing in the years to come. Uh, so coming up next here, I'm going to be telling you why the cap spike here in the National Football League is good news for the Washington Commanders, and we'll also talk about some of the bad aspects of this and kind of both sides of the coin. But before we get into that, let's have a word from our sponsor here at Prize Picks, which is America's number one sports picks app. Playoff basketball is still here, guys, but it won't be around forever. And there's no better place to cash in during playoff season with our friends at Prize Picks.
The app is really easy to use. You just pick more than or less than on a few player stat projections and then lock in your lineup. And if basketball isn't your thing, they have a ton of other sports to choose from as well with a number of different stat projections in all of those different sports to truly customize your daily fantasy experience.
You can take a look here at this projection I have for next year's football season. You can look ahead to future seasons, uh, which is pretty cool on prize pick. So, I'm taking the more on Dak Prescott here, the more on Bill Crosky, Merritt, the more on Jaden Daniels, and the more on Terry McLuren.
I'm an optimistic guy, man. What can I say here? In this particular projection, I can come away with $200 if I put in a $20 entry fee and I get all four correct in what Prize Pix calls a power play.
So, download the Prize Pix app today.
Use code HMA when you play your first $5 lineup to receive $50 in lineups. That's code HMA when you play your first $5 lineup to get an extra $50 in lineups with our friends app, Prize Picks. So, the good news of this upcoming international package and the streaming platforms kind of bidding uh for the usage of those games is that the upcoming cap bite that's going to result from that is going to soften the blow for a potential extension for quarterback Jaden Daniels. And of course, Jaden's uh uh contract extension, he's going to be eligible here in just a few years. And if they want here, they could backload Jaden's contract uh to really extend that period in which Jaden's, you know, cap hit isn't as high and they can surround him with a bunch of talent on this roster.
Of course, right now, Jaden is in that period on his rookie contract where he's not making a ton of money relative to the rest of the quarterbacks in the National Football League and they can surround him with a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. But that's going to run out eventually just because uh quarterbacks in the National Football League, you know, they command a lot of money. veteran ones that is. And it, you know, whenever that second deal comes for Jaden, you know, uh, you know, crossing our fingers that he earns it and he really, uh, you know, bounces back after a down se second season here in Washington, it's going to be lucrative, man. Somebody of his talent, somebody that brings as much value as he brings both as a passer and a rusher. By that point, he'll be the he'll be the leader of the locker room. And you know, plain and simply guys, like the the market for quarterbacks now is set at 60 million with Dak Prescott and that's only going to go up. Um, so you know, Jaden Daniels' contract is almost guaranteed to be at least $60 million a season. It could be more than that uh with the increases we are expecting to the cap here in the National Football League. So my advice to Adam Peters man is simple. Do not mess around when it comes to a Jaden Daniels contract extension. they should try and get this deal done as soon as they possibly can.
Obviously, they can't do it right now because he's not extension eligible, but once, you know, he gets to that final year of his current rookie contract, one year removed from his fifth year option when he becomes extension eligible, they have to do whatever they can to try and get him for the best possible price that they can at that point. And yeah, it's it's probably going to look lucrative when when the deal comes down, but I guarantee you, man, it's better than waiting and waiting for Caleb Williams and Drake May to get their deals and then you have to end up paying longer or or pay paying more uh than those quarterbacks. So, if I'm Adam Peters, I'm trying to learn from the Terry McLuren mistake, uh, waiting to pay him and end ending up having to pay him more. Um, when it comes to Jaden Daniels, you know, he's going to be your franchise quarterback or at least we have a strong feeling he will be. So once he's extension eligible, this team has to do whatever it can to try and get that deal done as soon as possible. So coming up here on the commander support, the downside to this new international deal. And yes, there is a pretty big downside here. But before we get into the bad news here, make sure you guys click that thumbs up icon if you appreciate our hard work that we put in here at the commander support to get you guys free commanders videos every single day on this channel. Um, we definitely put in a ton of manh hours here to get you guys the latest when it comes to the burgundy and gold. So, if you appreciate our efforts here, we'd appreciate it if you click that thumbs up icon. All right. So, now the bad news is is that the NFL can now put rivalry games like Commanders versus Cowboys, for example, overseas or Commanders versus Eagles or Commanders versus Giants. And they can even uh make that, you know, the Commanders' home game because obviously the Commanders play their rivals twice a year. uh they could make it so they have to play, let's say, the Eagles o overseas and that's their home game and then they have to travel to Philadelphia uh for their other game and that's going to put them at a big disadvantage obviously because you don't get that home crowd advantage against one of your rivals. Now hopefully the NFL will just stay away from rivalry games because you know unless they're going to have multiple international games and you're going to be away for one and then they're going to be home for one. It's just so complicated. I think it's just easier if the NFL just stays out of the business of trying to, you know, get rivalry games to be played overseas.
We're actually seeing the first one this year. I believe it's in in week one with the with the 49ers and the Rams in the season opener in Melbourne, uh, Australia. So, you know, it's I think this is just the beginning, guys. The NFL and these streaming platforms, they're going to be coughing up a lot of money. Um, and you know, the NFL knows that streamers can pay more than networks. That's why you're seeing Netflix and Amazon, you know, get these latest deals is because CBS, Fox, NBC, these guys cannot keep up uh with the with the money that Netflix and Amazon are throwing around right now. So, the way that it works, guys, is that if streamers want marquee matchups, if they want rivalry matchups, if they want special games and special prime time slots, they're going to get them because they're pwning up the dough. The NFL is a business. They're going to go with whoever pays them the most money and they're going to prioritize the people that give them the most money. So, you know, they're paying the big bucks here.
So, if they want Commanders versus Cowboys and they want to take away a home game for the Washington Commanders and uh what's really, you know, one of their biggest games of the year, they have the power to do that now. And that is the bad news here. And, you know, really the proof of that is that the schedules for Amazon are amazing on Thursday Night Football. I mean, back in the day when it was just NFL Network getting Thursday Night Football, it was like Jaguars, Titans, you know, the infamous, you know, color rush game, all that different stuff. Now, they're getting like rivalry matchups every single week. I mean, the Thursday Night Football matchup is is most of the time better than the Sunday night matchup.
All right? And the reason for that is Amazon is paying the National Football League a boatload of money uh to get those matchups. So, that's just the way that it's going to work. And you know, in terms of the fan experience and the fan perspective, it's just even more bad news here because not only can your team's home game against a rival be taken away and taken overseas, but also you have to be subscribed to all these different streaming services uh to watch uh you know, most if not all of NFL games in the future. I mean, pretty soon it's going to be pretty much all streaming platforms and no networks getting these games. All right? and that's just going to be the way of the world uh moving forward because obviously streaming is is the way of the future when it comes to television and movies and it's going to be the same when it comes to watching sports. So, um you know I think that there's mixed opinions on it and all that different stuff, but um I I I think you know it's certainly bad news that you have to pay for all these different things just to watch uh every single NFL game throughout the year. So, be honest with me down the down there in the comments section. Do you like international games? Do you think that they're good for the sport or do you like that American football is played on American soil? Give me a yes or a no down there in the comment section to let me know what you guys think. And that'll be it for today's edition of the Commander Report by Chat Sports. We're going to continue to get you guys great coverage throughout the week here on the Burgundy and Gold. And remember, tomorrow is the start of Commander OTAA. So, we'll get you guys the very latest uh from Ashurn as we get it. So, make sure you click that subscribe button if you haven't already. Till next time, guys. Go raise some hail.
