The process of renaming a street | Portlandia Clip

[00:00:01]We are here to discuss a proposal to rename Northeast 15th Avenue. Now, before we start, I need to run down a few criteria.

[00:00:08]Uh city streets may only be renamed after a prominent person. Such prominent person must be one, a person who's achieved prominence as a result of his or her significant positive contribution to the [music] United States of America and or the local community. Two, a real person, [music] and three, a person who has been deceased for at least 5 years. So, without further ado, I open the meeting up to suggestions.

[00:00:33]>> Homeowners in the area. Um what was the second piece of criteria that you had?

[00:00:38]>> Uh real person.

[00:00:40]>> So, it has to be a real person.

[00:00:41]>> Yeah.

[00:00:42]>> Okay, so I know that that person, but for 15th Avenue, which is is a beautiful street, I thought, what if we do film history Avenue?

[00:00:53]>> Well, didn't he just say >> It's a prominent person.

[00:00:57]>> But, there are real people who are in film history.

[00:00:59]>> Call me a traditionalist.

[00:01:04]Uh what I would like to do is go ahead and plan to vote on renaming the street after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

[00:01:12]>> I'm fine with it.

[00:01:14]>> do you Do you know we already have an MLK?

[00:01:16]>> It would be double the honor.

[00:01:18]>> I I think it's confusing.

[00:01:19]>> Is there a Martin Luther King, Sr. we could do instead?

[00:01:23]>> I was thinking more Mel Blanc or Ken Keyes.

[00:01:28]>> Can we do music street?

[00:01:31]>> What does this say?

[00:01:33]>> Real person.

[00:01:34]>> Thank you.

[00:01:35]>> So, we're not doing cartoon characters or anything in our imagination.

[00:01:57]>> And I really don't mean to throw cold water on your dib, but it's not a real person and that is within the parameters that we have to stay within.

[00:02:03]>> Uh there is one episode where all the kids come up to Coocoo Boo. They're like, "Coocoo Boo, you're not a real person." And he's [music] like, "Actually, I am."

[00:02:16]>> I have been reading Steve Jobs' biography. It talks about how he went to Reed College in Southeast Portland his freshman year.
