Oil Markets Ignore Trump, Go Into Complete Chaos As Iran War 'Restarts', US Deal Talks Remain Stuck?Added:
Oil market confusion is now reportedly worsening as fears grow that the fragile US Iran crisis could spiral back toward open confrontation, triggering fresh concerns about another major global energy shock. Amid conflicting signals and uncertain reports surrounding a possible peace deal between Washington and Tran, global oil markets are swinging wildly as traders struggle to predict where the crisis is heading next. Across energy markets, traders are increasingly betting on diplomatic progress during the day, only to panic again at night over fears that the straight of hormuz could collapse into renewed disruption or conflict.
Oil prices ended the May 28th trading session mixed after another highly volatile day in global energy markets as investors reacted nervously to fastchanging developments surrounding possible US Iran ceasefire negotiations.
According to reports, Brent crude futures for July delivery closed down 0.6% 6% at $93.71 a barrel on May 28th, reflecting continued uncertainty over both diplomacy and global oil supply risks.
Reuters reported that the more actively traded August Brent crude futures actually moved higher later in the trading session, highlighting how sharply divided and unstable market expectations remain right now.
Meanwhile, US crude futures managed to end the May 28th session with marginal gains of around 0.3%.
Even as broader market sentiment remained extremely cautious and unpredictable throughout the day, global oil traders were seen reacting aggressively to conflicting reports about whether the United States and Iran are truly moving closer toward extending a possible ceasefire arrangement or drifting back toward escalation.
Energy markets overall continue to remain highly volatile as uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict, the future of the Strait of Hormuz, and the possibility of renewed regional confrontation keeps traders on edge.
Market analysts from Rita Bush and Associates told Reuters and I quote, "The complex continues to advance grudgingly on bullish developments out of Iran while plunging marketkedly on even the slightest suggestion of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz." This contrast in responses to bullish and bearish inputs could continue as long as the ceasefire remains intact. The oil market remains more sensitive to Middle East headlines despite another week of large declines in US stock piles.
Fresh Gulf tensions erupted after Iran claimed it shot down a trespassing American drone near the Busher region.
Iranian media said the drone was intercepted near the southern province that hosts Iran's sensitive nuclear infrastructure. Tasnim news agency cited military sources claiming Iran targeted the American drone with a missile strike on May 29. Fast news agency reported Iran's integrated air defense network immediately confronted the aircraft after detecting the alleged intrusion.
Officials said the operation involved air defense system stationed near Jam and Kangan inside Busher province.
Iranian media reports claimed search operations later began to locate debris from the reportedly downed American aircraft. However, the US military strongly denied Iranian claims that any American aircraft had been shot down near Busher. US Central Command stated all American air assets were fully accounted for following what it called false Iranian reports. The Busher region had previously faced attacks during earlier US-Israeli operations targeting Iranian military and nuclear linked infrastructure. Notably, Iran's Busher nuclear power plant is jointly linked to Russian and Iranian nuclear cooperation projects. The latest tension surfaced even as Washington and Thran reportedly discussed extending a fragile 60-day ceasefire arrangement.
Iran's IRGC says it has released a video showcasing its response to the May 27th attack launched by the US military using the footage to signal its readiness to retaliate. According to the IRGC, its forces struck a US air base in direct response to a reported American attack near Bondarbas framing the move as a calibrated counter blow. Taznim news agency reported that Tyrron described the strike as an answer to US aggression, portraying Iran's actions as defensive retaliation rather than escalation.
Press TV reported that the strike was announced in a statement published by the IRGC, which laid out the group's rationale and attempted to justify the action as a measured, intentional response rather than an impulsive escalation.
The IRGC said the attack took place at 4:50 a.m. and described it as a serious warning, using precise timing and stark language to emphasize the message was deliberate and meant to deter further actions.
Iran stated that the strike was retaliation for an earlier US military action near Bund Abbas, portraying the operation as part of a tit fortat cycle meant to punish what Thran called unlawful or provocative conduct. The IRGC warned that any further US aggression would be met with a stronger response, signaling a commitment to escalate proportionally if it perceives continued threats and underscoring the danger of a widening confrontation.
Tensions around the straight of Hormuz sharply escalated after Iran reportedly confronted suspicious vessels near the strategic waterway. Reports claimed missile launches from southern Iran were directed toward unspecified targets during rising Gulf tensions on May 28th.
Tasnim news agency reported warning fire exchanges erupted near the straight of Hormuz amid heightened regional military activity. Iran's military later confirmed warning shots were fired at four allegedly non-compliant vessels approaching the strategic maritime corridor. The IRGC Navy claimed the vessels attempted crossing Hormuz without prior coordination with Iranian maritime authorities. Thran has tightened restrictions around Hormuz following months of rising confrontation with Washington across Gulf waters and shipping routes. The latest incident surfaced just one day after Iran reportedly confronted a US- linked tanker near the straight of Hormuz.
Iranian media claimed the tanker attempted crossing Hormuz while disabling tracking systems and avoiding maritime coordination protocols. The IRGC Navy reportedly forced the vessel to retreat before US forces allegedly responded near Bundo Abbas.
Iran's lead negotiator Muhammad Bagghar Galabaf was also praised in a statement amid ongoing diplomatic engagement with Washington. This comes amid reports of differences between Majaba Kamee and Galabath over the conditions surrounding a possible peace agreement. Majaba Kamee said, and I quote, "The enemy's blind plan after the imposed war, economic pressure, and propaganda, and political siege is to create division and social fragmentation in order to compensate for its defeats on the battlefield and bring the nation to its knees. Those who care about Islam, the revolution, or Iran's independence should not turn unwarranted and even warranted differences into conflict and division. End quote.
Additionally, Majaba laid out a broader postwar road map for how Iran should rebuild after conflict with the US and Israel. He called for stronger economic stability while urging leaders to maintain firm positions against what he called arrogant global powers. Majaba Kamei said and I quote, "The seat of a representative is considered a frontline trench of transformation on the path of the country's progress. Priorities are reconstructing the country, resolving the people's concerns, especially economic and livelihood issues, boosting production and employment, advancing science and industry, elevating culture and ethics, fighting financial corruption, curbing inflation and high prices, and realizing total eradication of poverty. Parliamentary legislation must have a direct and visible relationship with the country's main issues and the needs of the people and must be oriented toward creating hope and building the country's future." End quote. Majaba also taunted the United States by invoking Iran's victory against what he once again called the great Satan. In the written address, he outlined what appeared to be Iran's next strategic posture against both Washington and Tel Aviv. Majaba said, and I quote, "Maintain courage and declare clear, uncompromising positions in the face of pressure from powerful foreign adversaries. Remain strategically focused on Iran's new role and influence across the region and the wider world. Protect national unity as one of the country's greatest political and strategic blessings. Preserve Iran's unmatched internal cohesion, which Machtaba described as central to victory against the great Satan.
