Researchers have developed crystalline membranes called 'POMbranes' with perfectly uniform 1-nanometer pores that self-assemble from ring-shaped building blocks, enabling precise molecular separation by forcing molecules through a single route and achieving 10 times better separation performance than traditional plastic filters while maintaining stability across harsh pH conditions, potentially revolutionizing water reuse in textiles and pharmaceutical industries by reducing energy consumption.

1-Nanometer Holes That Could Save Water
Added:A hole 1 nanometer wide could change how the world cleans water.
Most people think filtration is simple, but most membranes have messy pores that warp and clog over time.
So, factories fall back on distillation and evaporation.
That separation step eats about 40 to 50% of industrial energy.
Researchers copied biology. Think of aquaporins like a bouncer at a club.
Only the right size gets in.
They built crystalline membranes called pammbranes.
Each building block has a permanent perfect 1 nanometer hole.
Here's the wild part. On water, billions of these ring shapes spread out and self-assemble into an ultra-thin sheet.
That forces [music] molecules through one route only, straight through those identical nano holes. No shortcuts.
In tests, it separated molecules just 100 to 200 Daltons apart. That's extremely hard for plastic filters.
Here's the scary part. The membrane showed almost [music] 10 times better separation performance and stayed stable across harsh pH.
That could mean cleaner textile [music] dye wastewater and serious water reuse.
And cheaper drug purification with less energy burn.
According to a June 12, 2026 report from Science Daily, the study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
If a 1 nanometer hole can cut energy and recycle water, what else are we wasting right now?
