The Catholic Church rejects the doctrine of Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) as a later human tradition rather than a biblical principle, arguing that the Bible itself does not teach that Scripture alone is the sole rule of faith; instead, the Church teaches that the true rule of faith consists of three interconnected authorities: Scripture (the written word of God), Tradition (the oral word of God), and the Church (the magisterium or teaching authority), which together form a three-legged stool where removing any one leg causes the entire structure to collapse.

Does the Bible Teach Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura)?Added:
No one's going to repair.
All right, let's begin with the prayer.
Okay, so that's a prayer on the screen there. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
>> Amen.
>> Heavenly Father, we thank you for gathering us together today. Send your holy spirit upon us. We reflect and the faith handed down through the apostles. Open our minds to understand the truth open our hearts to receive it with humility and strengthen us to leave it with courage and love. May these session uses Jesus Christ >> and our appreciation >> for the gift of scripture, tradition and your church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
>> Welcome back. So, it's a very interesting topic on the Bible. So, the title does the teach scripture alone in Latin it is solar scriptura.
Before we understand this title, let's first understand the history. Okay. So, how it got originated from where? And so, we go back to the so-called 16th century, the founder of uh Protestant Reformation in 16th century. And so, Martin Luther was an Augustian Catholic religious religious person.
And so he had a sharp uh conflict or difference in in his approach. And so he had so-called felt and thought is that the some of the Catholic teachings and the practices are contrary to the scripture.
And so to justify his stand he has to have a another authority higher than the church authority authority he found it in the bible the written word of god so that's his principle the solar scriptura right so that is what he promoted in the 16th century is that the church practicing whatever beliefs and the teachings are not explicitly ly mentioned in the Bible.
So that was his principle the doctrine of solar scriptura which means bible alone which means we don't need any other authorities any other teaching because bible itself is enough for us because in the pages of the bible there is enough of truth for our salvation teaching and how to live a life a relig life. Okay. So the faith life, faithful life and all that we need is there enough in the Bible. So we don't need any other sources and church authority and so for him is like all the ancient liturgies and the early church fathers writing and the creed it's obsolate is there is no need because Bible itself contains everything.
So what the church has to say?
The Catholic Church says no the Bible is not the sole authority. Yes, Bible is the authority.
Bible is the inspired word of God. But to say that Bible alone is enough for us. No. Then that that that that begs a question is that whether the same Bible is teaching us the Bible alone is the sole rule of faith.
So nowhere in the Bible Bible itself teaches that Bible alone so soal the word alone is added by Martin Luther and all all.
So that's what it is. So the the teaching of the church is very clear. We say no it is not the sole authorities okay it is an authority scripture is an authority it's inspired word of god yes we agree but it is not for us for Christian for Catholic for us the true role of faith is both combination of scripture what we call it and tradition scripture the written word of god and the oral word of god before the written word of god came into existence there was the oral word of god So we will come to that you know it took four centuries to really to get the Bible the written word of God with 73 books the protestation has 66 books that cannon of books in the Bible that came later on.
So the church was existing. So the combination of this what we call the word of God which is a scripture written word of God oral word of God. So who will call the whole thing of manifesting expression or guided by the church the teaching authority of the church what we call it the magisterium to the magisterium to the church was handed over entrusted the so-called the oral teaching of Jesus and the apostle and to the church the authority to interpret the scripture so that what what we are saying the true rule of faith is scripture the tradition the world of god are and the church it's like a three-legged stool you remove one leg it collapses and that's what we are here to show that so whatever the Martin Luther presented proposed this but it is not supported by the scripture bible itself this is what the church says that it is a three-pillar authority for us as a Christian as a Catholic what it is. So but one thing is that we agree with the other brothers and sisters the Christians the Protestant and what we say it is the scripture is the inspired word of God and also it's inspired the divinely inspired word of God. We are not saying that it is less inspired. No it is inspired by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. And also we are saying this so-called the scripture the Bible it is inherent in the s is it is without any error as far as the teaching is concerned about the salvation of our soul.
The Bible has that truth without any error about the salvation our salvation.
So in these two cases we agree with other Christian we don't agree with them when they saw it is a soul or alone we disagree with them we say yes Bible yes but but with the tradition and the church three together in authority in teaching us and guiding us so we will take one by one why so-cal the written word of god is not sole alone authorities because of number of reason that I'm putting forth. So this is what it is. So further we say there are why the church is saying that scripture is not alone the sole rule of faith is because of it is unscriptural.
The Bible itself doesn't support it. It is unhistoricical, illogical, inconsistent, improbable and impractical.
These are the number of six reason that that I'm putting forward. I'll explain to you one by one that we cannot accept and also even though Martin Luther promoted that put put forward the so-called the scripture is the sole rule of faith that the present modern Christian the other Christian has without any uncritically accepted the doctrine of Martin Luther and that Protestant reformation.
Okay.
Okay. So now to defend this so-called position that it is so-called solar scripturiz scripture alone is enough and that we don't need the church. We don't need the tradition. We don't need any other so-cal authorities. It's just like hindrance for us as a Christian. But then we asking the same question is that if the Bible is saying that you are is the sole authority then the Bible itself to tell us that Bible alone is a rule of faith but then in order to defend that they will quote number of put forward three scriptures which they think it is supporting their so-called the idea of this so-called scripture is sole rule of faith. The number one scripture that comes up is that from Timothy 2 Timothy 3:16-7.
Look at this scripture. They will say that Bible itself says in this to Timothy where St. Paul writes to Timothy all scripture is inspired by God and it is profitable for teaching for refu for correction for and for training in righteousness. For four thing that the man of God may be complete equipped for every good works. Now there is a problem with this scripture when you say it says scripture is inspired but the word alone is not there. But also the other thing is that all scripture but that does not give the least of scriptures.
What makes a Bible consist of 733 books according to the Catholic Church and 66 books according to the Protestant.
But that scripture the letter to Timothy does not say which book should be inspired, which book is not inspired. It just says all and there is no so-called index table of content to say that these are the books inspired and and now another problem with this scripture is that so-cal saint Paul is writing to Timothy and and Timothy at the time of when in St. Paul is writing to Timothy.
There was no scripture or Bible into existence as a real New Testament books were not composed in the first century. All the so-called 27 New Testament books were written were written in the first century but it was not so-called canonically established by the church. Again the church authority has to declare as to say that these are the book which are inspired and they rejected number of books gospel according to St. Thomas and the many other letters that they said no it is not inspired. So it took four centuries so at the time of so-called Paul writing to Timothy the new testament did not exist. So what scripture he was referring to?
He was referring to old testament when you go with that same logic when you say St. Paul says that all scriptures are inspired which means he's referring to the old testament by same logic by same argument if I say that only the old testament is inspired he was referring to old testament with the same argument we use that mean the old testament is inspired that means the new testament is not inspired because it was not there at all the problem with this scripture just quoting That is a big problem. That's what it is. So somehow this scripture is not supporting this doctrine or this principle of Protestant Reformation as Bible is the sole rule of faith. No. The another scripture that they bring up is the the the scripture from John chapter 20 verse 31. These signs are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ the son of God and that believing you may have life in his name.
Now this scripture John is writing in his gospel in the end of his gospel. So he says all these signs that he performed now it is put down for you. Now he's referring only to this gospel which means to say if I take this scripture passage he's referring only to his gospel and when he was writing he did not know there will be other writers will be writing about Jesus Christ and the gospel and the teaching with each one are writing different book different time it is only the church collected all the 20 so-called 27 new testament books and also included so-called 46 books of the Old Testament. Total 73 books. So if you take that scripture that means only John is referring to his book which means his book is enough.
Only John's gospel is enough for us to believe in Jesus. We don't need any other books of the New Testament. Can we conclude that that's a problem?
That's a second scripture.
Let's go to the third scripture which they bring up sometime to defend this doctrine the so-called the principle of solar scriptura. All right. So now here is this. You search the scripture because you think that in them you have eternal life and it is they that bear witness to me.
Good. It is referring to so-called scripture which is a witness. But when you look at the Bible, there are many other witnesses, not only the scripture, the magi came in search of Jesus, baby Jesus, star was a witness.
And when John writes in his letter, who are the other witnesses besides so-called the Jesus's works? The blood, the holy spirit. So there are scripture itself. There are many other witnesses not only the scripture.
This passage talks about the scripture but there are also other witnesses. So again the scripture is not in a way supporting so-called the doctrine or the principle of solar scriptura.
So scripture itself is not supporting.
That's a question we asking. Then the solar scriptur is unhistorical.
It suddenly came up in the 16th century.
It was not there. For that we need to see the first thing because Jesus commissioned the apostle to preach and not to write.
The question that we asking the Bible, how did Bible came into existence? Did Jesus did any word, any book, any letters?
He clearly said at the end of his ministry after the resurrection, as he was ascending, go out into the whole world, baptize them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. Preach the good news. He said preach, baptize them and I'm with you till the end of time.
So he said very clearly preach. He did not say right.
So the problem is that written word of God came later on.
But the church was faithful taking the words of Jesus seriously went about preaching and teaching.
So before really the Bible came into existence, the church was existing, preaching and teaching and bringing people to the Lord, baptizing them in the name of the father, son, and the holy spirit.
So the early apostles the the the the Christian early Christians were faithful to Jesus words. They went about preaching and teaching. Then there is some scripture passage where it says in John 14:26 in support of so-called doctrine they will say Jesus said the counselor the holy spirit which I will with God the father will send in my name will help you to teach whatever I've taught and also will help you to remember. So that scripture they sometime they quote now this is what it is John chapter 14 verse 26 where Jesus pro promise the counselor the holy spirit will father send in my name which will help you will help you to teach and to remember now when I and so this is what Jesus said and so the apostles were faithful and the promises they tried to fulfill the promise of Jesus through the holy spirit by putting down in writing. So this is a scripture they are quoting which I'm not mentioned there. But then they bring this in defense of this so-called doctrine. But the problem with this scripture again is that now this promise was given by Jesus to the 11 apostle.
Judas was not there. Later on the first book of the the actually of Ma Matias was appointed in place of Judas but now let's take the 11 apostle out of 11 apostle how the scripture not all if Jesus says this is the promise I'm giving you that the spirit will help you to put down in writing that not all fulfilled the promise of Jesus they did not write then there's a problem with the gospel you and me are reading gospel and the letters of the new testament which are not written by the so-called 11 apostles take for example the four gospel Luke Mark are they apostle no so they were not present when Jesus promised is this but still there are gospels we are right we are reading we are accepting as the gospel of Jesus Christ how and though those other go other apostles to whom Jesus gave this promise did they fail Jesus they did were they not faithful it doesn't make sense when you say that so-called the the scripture is the sole rule of faith everywhere it fails but then what we say is that so-cal the teaching of Jesus was there in the church in the oral form in the community and then some of them decided to put down in writing so it's from the community it's from the church but is oral tradition passed on from generation to generation So even before the written word of God came into existence, the church was existing. The gospel was preached faithful to Jesus's word.
So preach not to write down. Yes, the church the disciples of Jesus put down in writing for the good for the welf for for our good for the future Christian.
Second, because the church was fully functioning before the canon of the New Testament was determined in the 4th century.
Do you think that only the Christianity started believing and practicing after the written word of God came? Now it took four centuries.
But in that fourth century, we know what happened. Christianity spread like a wildfire. Even in the midst of all this persecution, killing happening, there was more miracle happening at that time.
Even in without the scripture, how is it possible that the so-called the believers were on fire spreading the word of God is without any fear of the Roman emperor killing them, torturing them. Where was the word of God? The word of God was there in their heart.
And some failed to put it down. They put it down in writing. But others went about preaching. The apostles and do you know that some of the apostle went about preaching. They left Jerusalem.
Peter and Simon. They went they went to Britain.
That Bartholomew went to Iran and then this one Thomas went to Iraq and India. There's a different apostle in different direction preaching.
So the church existed even without so-called the written word of God.
It is is the inspired word of God. It is an authority. We are saying the church is not denying that. But to say that the only the word of God the written word of God and that we reject the tradition and we reject the church that is not what the church what the scripture is saying.
So it was functioning the very well the church was existing.
The other thing about this the first Bible was printed in Gutenberg.
The printing machine we know came in that so-called around 15th 16th centuries. The first Bible was printed in that 16th. Before that people did not have a Bible in hand. Even if the Bible was composed or given by the church in the end of 4th century, not all the Christians, all the believers could have a Bible because most most of them were illiterate.
And even if they were literate they could not be able to buy the Bible because Bible was written in hand.
You start writing the Bible from first page to the last page and tell me how many days and how many months will take and imagine when you are writing the word of God be careful you don't make a mistake and tell me how much time it will take.
So how many copies you can write and it was written carefully and there was not many copies were available and it was very expensive for people to buy. Not everybody can afford to buy. But the church made sure that every church should have a Bible because from the pulpit of the word of God, the table of the word of God, the word was preached and proclaimed.
But not every individual person had the so-called the luxury of the Bible, of holding the Bible, having the Bible like you and me now have.
Even though we have a written word of God, how many of our really are reading the word of God daily on a daily basis?
And how many miracles are happening without Bible being there at that that time people were performing believing wonderful wonder wonderful work they were doing.
So the whole thing argument doesn't help in supporting the solar scriptura.
We are the point because the testimony of the early church fathers shows us that the scripture is not a exclusive authority and these are the great theologians the early believers their writings they testify is that they never ever mention that sole rule of faith is it was a foreign doctrine or principle never ever thought about in the early church even heretics Those people in early church there was a problem.
Some were telling promoting the idea that Jesus is not God and all that was happening in the early church. None of none of them even though they were heretics none of them said that that the Bible is a sole rule of faith. They use Bible quotation. They use Bible to support their argument and all that. But they never ever promoted that idea of sole rule of faith. It only came in the 16th century with Luther Martin Luther.
So here are the I put down few the the the writings of the some of the great people of the early church early church fathers what we call it. So we have the so-called Ianius of Leon. He was there in so-called the second century and this is what he write the church although she disseminated throughout the whole world yet guarded the faith who guarded the faith not the Bible the community guarded the faith as she occupied but one house for while the language of the world are diverse nevertheless the authority in the same so he speaks a tradition.
The early church writer in the second century talking about protecting the faith by one church of Christ. Let's take the second one. The origin is there in the early 3rd century. This is what the teaching of the church has indeed been handed down through an order of succession from the apostle passed on from generation to generation that alone is to be believed at the truth which is in no way at variance with the ecclesiastical and apostolic tradition. So it is not contradicting the church tradition religion whatever is passed on it is passed on in the body of Christ so-called the writer of the early third cent century and the third one I'm talking about is a St. Augustine at the 4th century and he was present in the so-called council of Epon cartage where they were finalizing the least of books to be included in the so-called bible and he writes very powerful and this is a very powerful words of St. Augustine.
I would not believe in the gospel myself if the authority of the Catholic Church did not influence me to do so. I would not believe unless the church tells me this is the inspired word of God.
Unless the church told me these are the 73 books are the inspired word of God.
Because the church told me I believe it's very clear St. Augustine tells us and those observances which derives not from the scripture but from the tradition and ordained to be kept very powerful words of St. Augustine in 4th century.
It is a church, the bride of Christ that was existing. Jesus founded the Bible, the church even before the Bible came into existence.
So church is like a mother giving birth to the baby. What we call it the Bible.
Don't put Bible first before the church.
Put the mother first and then come the children.
You ask the parents more about the children. So you ask the church to about the interpretation of the Bible, anything about the Bible, not the other way around.
That's what it is. The early writers historically we know this soal doctrine is not supported and it is illogical.
So is that when you say that scripture itself says that scripture is inspired now that's not how it is the fundamental question that we asking what is scripture so whether the scripture the bible has the so-called list of list of books of content index where it said these are the so-called inspired word of god look at any gospel look at any scripture or letters doesn't say this is the inspired word of God this is inspired by the I'm writing with the because it is inspired word of God none of them are writing they do not know that letters or book will be included in the Bible who decided there has to be an authority outside the Bible to say this is the Bible and so this is what we call it circular reasoning problem is that you are saying the so-called the Bible is inspired is a circular you're going back to the because there is no outside authority what is scripture because the scripture is saying it is inspired what makes the scripture inspired because the scripture is saying inspired so it is like take for example a writer writes a book and he says that my book is inspired because he he writes his book is inspired So it becomes inspir in inspirational a simple logic.
There has to be an outside authority to say that this so-called Bible which consists of 73 books is the inspired word of God.
God has to use an authority outside and that authority we are saying the church which church not any other church it is a Catholic church but all other church was brother the church and now they have taken the Bible and they have rejected the mother the church how can you do that for example the book it's like a constitution And textbook is the book of the Christian. The believer only believer has to take the textbook.
It is not for the outsiders to say that this is my textbook. It is the textbook given to you as a believer the part of the community.
I take the Bible but I don't take the church. That's what other Christians are doing.
You can't take that.
take both.
So it's a circular reasoning and so it has to have an outside authority to tell us that's illogical. And the other thing that consistent is that what we we are saying is that we you reject the Catholic tradition or what we call the oral tradition. But then when you approach the Bible for interpretation, for reading, you don't approach Bible with a blank slate.
You approach Bible with your own tradition even though you don't accept it.
And that's the problem with this. In practice, there is no such thing as scripture alone. In practice you always approach the Bible with your own tradition whichever church tradition you hold on. And that's why I want to tell you about this some of the tradition which all the Christians are following. We all approach Bible with that so-called tradition which you they may let me tell you that Lutheran will have this called so-called statement of faith of statement of faith what called oberg confession Anglican approach the Bible with what we call the 39 articles and then Presbyterian approached the Bible with the West Minister Confession of 1967 congregationalists and Baptist approached the so-called Bible with the London confession.
This so-called statement of faith which they it's their tradition.
It's like a scripture that it's like an authority. So if they don't accept this so-called the statement of faith they will be excommunicated.
So even the Protestant even the Lutheran the early reformation they approach Bible with the so-called the prince principle in their mind is that solar scriptura which mean no other thing should be added only Bible alone is there so that's a tradition so each one has its own tradition and you talk about so-called the Catholic oh the Catholic is adding to the written word of God what we call human tradition but you have everyone has tradition. You call it whatever 16th century culture whatever want to call it tradition. If there is supernatural tradition that is also natural tradition. supernatural tradition what we call it through the Holy Spirit in the church the body of Christ that was passed down from the generation in the word of God the word of God and also the local tradition we have what we call it custom both so what we call it there is a c there is a tradition we are talking anybody has a everybody has approached Bible with our own tradition so processing also has his own tradition. Anglican has his own tradition. Lutheran has his own tradition.
So that so those who are promoting this solar scripture are not consistent.
They're pointing out somewhere else or no you have a world tradition but also you have our own tradition. It is improbable. We not we are not saying impossible but is improbable. is that for all 15th century the 15th century the church led by the Holy Spirit did not think about so-called new doctrine which suddenly Luther and the Protestant reformation thought about suddenly inspired by the holy spirit that the holy spirit guided them inspired them and then they started promoting what we call the solar scriptura Which mean you mean to say is that for 16th century the the spirit did not guided the church that did not think about that Bible is alone is the sole rule of faith sudden have been inspired either you say the spirit was not present or oh the spirit started becoming present now through you improbable you cannot ever think about that so that's a question that we are asking is that how is it possible solar scripture never thought about and and early believers they know they rejected all that even Calvin before Luther he promoted this idea but then the same the scholars of the Cambridge and the Oxford rejected that idea So some of these people uncritically accept doctrine. We have to critically see what whether it is supported by the scripture itself.
impractical and this is what has happened in that from the 16th cent till now this so-called one doctrine more than any other teaching has done damage to the body of Christ and more damage to the body of Christ this one doctrine is because the Bible is given to you go you don't need the church you don't need any other authority to interpret.
And that's where each one of us took the Bible in hand. The Holy Spirit is there with me and I started interpreting my own doctrine, my own way of worship, my own way of doing all that.
And that's where if you Google it, if you Google it, check how many Christian denomination is there in the world. Any guess?
45,000 to 50,000 denominations.
What a scandal.
What a scandal. The one Christ, one body of Christ, the Christ Jesus wanted that unity.
What is more given damage more than any other thing is that so-called solar scriptura the Bible alone for the last so-cal 500 years let me give a few example of that why we have divided because of soul internet now just giving example that the fruit of the solar scripture is division each church is in a way having a problem in understanding understanding the the so-cal the teaching. Now for example, let me tell you the when is the second coming? We all believe that Jesus came, he died, he rose and he will come again.
But when is that second coming now?
So there are number of books written second coming. So they differ in this so-al second coming. That's a doctrinal problem. Then there is sacrament. Some churches accept seven sacrament like church catholic church or but others say only two sacraments based on what? Bible.
I have authority. I have the holy spirit.
So there is a division because of the sacraments. Now morals divorce abortion.
Some churches agree, some churches don't agree.
Homosexuality big problem to see what in the morality each one can decide what is right, what is wrong, what is good, what is bad because I have the Bible, the written word of God because that was the doctrine promoted.
Oh yes. See the confusion because of solar scriptura then so-called governing the church governing look at some of this church governing the episcopal church governing who are this who are following this Lutheran and the Anglican then so-called the presbyterial perpicial church governing is is by Presbyterian and reformed churches then there is a congregational church governing is by the Baptist church a Pentecostal independent church.
There again there is a problem how to run the church different governing. So can you imagine is that solar scriptor caused more damage to the body of rejected so-called the oral tradition and the church authority.
But now just to give example if every country the founding fathers of every country gave a constitution.
Now suppose they have written down the written so-al constitution the laws and told the people the citizen that oh here is the constitution go our spirit is there with you.
Imagine what would have happened to every country if there was only constitution given.
But they were so wise people. They know that what we need to run the ch run the country is that three bodies legislative, executive and judicial bodies.
Every age, every n when the issue comes before the government, it goes to the judicial the calledal the court the judges and all that thing they take up the case and they interpret the so-called their conution the laws every country has that you think that Jesus is not wise enough to think about all that so that's why in the church we should have we should need so so-al magisterium the church teaching authority what we call did the church and it is a church who said this 73 books is the so-called inspired word of God.
The Bible on its own cannot decide, cannot speak, cannot open its mouth.
It has to be told from outside the authority. And that's why we say in conclusion that so-called solar scriptura is a blueprint to failure in the fruits of the solar scriptura.
The Catholic Church from the day one the faith is handed down by Jesus to the body of Christ to the church.
The church has to the church will do everything when the wrong teaching comes up. Church has to defend has to teach what is right, what is wrong, what to believe, what not to believe.
And that's the analogy of the constitution I gave you.
And so the our so-cal model, the Catholic model is is the right model.
What do we say? The rule of faith. The true rule of faith is not a lone scripture.
It's a scripture combination of scripture. The written word of God and the oral word of God. Both together is a word of God. But then we say the real word of God is Jesus. John's gospel. In the beginning of the word, the word was with God and the word is Jesus. So Jesus is and that is is the word of God. And that word of God is is there in a two form and oral. And this so-called two word both the written oral word was interested to the church the magistium teaching authority and the church interpret as I said in the beginning the bible is the baby like a baby. So if you want to know more about the baby you have to ask the parent the mother. And so anything the interpretation of the word of God, the written word of God, we need to look up to the church and that the church drawing from the truth from the scripture develops beliefs and teachings what to believe what not to believe. That's why the church what Jesus found it first the written word of God came later.
Clear? The the scripture is not the soul rule of faith. It's an authority. It's a w inspired word of God. But yes, it is authority but not soul authority. It is scripture, tradition, and the church. The three-legged stool of our faith. Amen.
