need to march they didn't need some giant government campaign telling them what to do nope they just quietly moved their money and now American industries are starting to admit something uncomfortable the Canadian boycott is no longer symbolic it is starting to hurt US alcohol exports to Canada have collapsed by roughly 63 to 70% after provinces pulled American products from the shelves Canadian travel to the United States has declined month after month border states are feeling it tourism boards are offering deals American lobbyists are asking Washington for help which is amazing because apparently the plan was to threaten Canada insult Canada talk about Annex in Canada and then keep expecting Canadians to buy Bourbon like nothing happened that is not how customers work people that's not how trust works and that's definitely not how Canadians work once they've quietly decided that they are done today's verdict is simple the Canadian boycott is real it is economic and the United States badly misread the mood of our country let's start with the booze because this is where the numbers are really hard to ignore before all of this Canada was not some tiny side market for the United States Canada bought about 35% of all US wine exports more than 15% of US beer exports and around 13% of US spirit exports that's not pocket change people that is one of the American alcohol industry's most important customers changing behavior then came the terrorists the threats the annexation talk the insults the constant instability and provincial liquor boards started pulling American products off the shelves Ontario alone changes the equation because the LCBO is one of the biggest alcohol buyers in the world when Ontario pulls products suppliers they notice it's not symbolic here that's a major buyer closing the door slamming it shut and once that emotional shift happens the economics follow and that's the part that Washington does not seem to understand they can't get it through their heads you did not lose 60 to 70% of a market because people were mildly annoyed you lose it because the customer has decided the relationship has changed and it's over and the industry is feeling it some Kentucky Bourbon producers are pausing production downsizing or warning about layoffs as exports to Canada collapse Jim Beam's flagship Kentucky distillery is halting production through 2026 among falling demand over supply and trade uncertainty and the US Distilled Spirits Council says the industry has lost near only 1,000 jobs over the past year alone with smaller craft distilleries they're struggling just to survive so when people ask does a boycott really matter this is the answer not everywhere not all at once but in targeted sectors where Canadians were valuable customers yes it matters and the American lobbyists now calling this a trade problem well they're missing the point this became personal for Canadians it's not just about trade no because this was never just about a bottle of Bourbon it was about being told by our closest neighbor that our economy could be threatened our sovereignty could be mocked or our country could be treated like an acquisition target and once people make that emotional switch well they won't come back cause we're mad we're angry and we want everyone to know that and that's the real danger for American brands right Canadians didn't simply pause many of them discovered alternatives Canadian whiskey Niagara wine European wine local distilleries products that were already there but suddenly had way more shelf space and more attention and once people find something they like well the old habit does not automatically return just because someone in Washington decides to act normal for 10 minutes that's why this is so much bigger than alcohol the booze numbers are just the clearest proof that something deeper has changed between Canadians and the United States and you can see that same shift in travel right there yeah Canadian travel to the United States has declined for 14 consecutive months month after month in March alone transporter traffic dropped yet another 7% over the year meanwhile we're out there we're still traveling we're just traveling differently domestic passenger traffic at major Canadian airports they have surged Halifax was up Toronto Pearson was up Calgary was up Canadians they're still booking trips we're still packing bags and we're still spending money they're just not automatically handing that money to the US and that matters here because Canadians are one of the most valuable international travel markets for America we cross often we stay longer and we spend a lot of money for decades Canadians were the reliable customer the winter traveler the snowbirds the family going to Florida the couple heading for a Vegas weekend the weekend visitor driving just to a border state to look around and now that reliable customer is drying up Las Vegas has seen Canadian tourism completely fall border states are struggling some tourism businesses are offering Canadians discounts deals heck and even at par exchange rates to lower them back this is where the US made a serious mistake it assumed that Canadian loyalty was automatic and it would always be there haha but it's not automatic it was built on comfort trust habit proximity and a sense that the relationship was stable once that stability disappears the habit weakens and once that habit weakens well the money exits Canada may be smaller than the United States nobody's pretending otherwise but Canada we're not economically irrelevant yeah listen the US exported more than $336 billion in goods to Canada last year Canada remains one of America's largest export markets so when Canadians redirect even a part of that spending people notice and the bigger lesson here is this is about trust you can survive a terror for a while you can survive a rough news cycle but if your customers decide that they no longer trust the relationship that's much harder to repair and that's what makes this so dangerous long term the problem is not just that Canadians bought less alcohol this year or cross the borders less this year it's the problem that many Canadians have discovered alternatives and they're not going back and that's the shift that Washington didn't count on Canadians were told for years that we had no leverage that we were too dependent that we could not push back that the United States held all the cards well hahaha they were wrong because leverage doesn't always look like a dramatic government announcement sometimes it just looks like millions of people making small decisions at the same time in the same direction buying Canadian skipping US liquor travelling somewhere else choosing a local business or booking a trip inside Canada that's sending a message without needing a microphone and that kind of pressure from Canada is harder to attack because it's voluntary we can't order Canadians to trust the US again that doesn't work and this is why the American lobby response is so revealing and so tone deaf they're asking Washington to pressure Canada but pressure is what caused the problem in the first place more pressure won't rebuild trust it will remind Canadians why they started moving their money in the first place it's not about hating Americans here we always like to reinforce that we're talking about something that is called boundaries here Canadians are saying that if you threaten our economy mock our sovereignty and and destabilize our trade we're not obligated to keep rewarding that behavior it's not hostility at all it's having self respect and frankly it's long overdue yet for too long Canada was treated like the polite neighbor who would absorb the insult take the economic hit and then show up the next morning like nothing happened but that Assumption has broken as Carney said there's a rupture and Canadians are realizing they have choices we're doing it one bottle at a time one trip at a time one booking at a time heck one purchase at a time it may sound small until millions of people do it together Danny stops being
