When working with live electronics, always verify connections before using diagnostic tools like multimeters, as accidental shorting of voltage rails can cause catastrophic damage; the 5V rail on the BTT Kraken motherboard failed because the Z-probe was mis-pinned, connecting signal to ground and 5V, which grounded out the 5V rail and triggered the motherboard's safety feature.

The Spark That Killed a Kraken - PrintFixFriday 249
Added:And then all of a sudden, boom, and then smoke comes up. I'm like, "Ah." And then the 12-V LED starts flashing at me. I'm like, >> Now this is insult to injury.
>> game over." Yeah, I was like, "That's game over."
>> We finally got a hold of the ever effervescent Danny, aka Neo Koi Prince.
Like me, he too likes things a little bit spicy, but unfortunately, his spice came with a bit of a challenge.
Danny, I hear I hear you had a similar problem that I had. Turns out that motherboards are in fact not impervious to those of us that are below the Mason-Dixon.
>> I have to agree, unfortunately.
Um >> Did yours at least let the smoke out?
>> It did. It did, in full 4K.
>> [laughter] >> I got it on video and everything.
>> Okay, good, cuz I need that video, cuz I burned up an Octopus live, but it didn't release any smoke.
>> What's the fun in that?
>> Exactly.
>> The sparks were bad on mine. The sparks scared me. Like, legitimately scared me, but I wasn't expecting it to happen. I guess nobody does, you know what I mean?
Like, nobody Nobody wants their their boards to blow up, especially a Kraken.
>> Yeah, cuz those aren't cheap.
>> Heck no, they're not cheap. And so, when I was in it and I'm I'm testing, and we can talk a little bit more about the what I was testing. And then all of a sudden, boom, and then smoke comes up.
I'm like, "Ah." And then the 12-V LED starts flashing at me. I'm like, >> Now this is insult to injury.
>> over." Yeah, I was like, "That's game over." So, >> Do you know what you burned up?
>> No. I can't I can't verify. I think I I blew up the entire 12-V rail, but I don't know if I blew up more than that, like below it, like 5-V and 3-V.
>> You know, I'm building the the tool changer, getting it up and running.
>> It's such a cool machine, but my god, I look at that and I'm like, "Bro, I struggled with a Trident, and you're doing this freaking stealth changer with six tool heads on it and like you need a ridiculous motherboard. You need you have to have a Kraken for this, right?
>> I mean I so originally I was on the Leviathan which is totally fine. I'll do the Leviathan. The reason that I went to Kraken is because 48 volt Z. So you can make those tool changes a lot faster along with the motion system all together. You know, for that reason it's just worth it and you know, I built it with a lot of guys from the stealth changer discord again without them that this build would not be possible. A lot of those guys have had a lot of input and help me along the way with this because this is my first 3D printer build in that it was, you know, the Leviathan the stock LDO kit didn't want to spend too much money in the beginning. It ended up being a little bit more than expected, but I mean I feel like most printer builds are >> Yeah. Scope creep happens.
>> Yeah. When has any of our printer builds ever been at or below budget?
>> like a lot of people jump into it without reading any documentation and then they're in that same spot.
>> Yeah, exactly. I mean if you believe >> I didn't do that with my Trident. No, yes, sir. I didn't read I I totally read the manual and saw that you're only supposed to use two colors even though I chose five because I thought five would be cool. I didn't read a damn thing and I paid the price for it.
>> I was elected to lead, not to read.
>> But hey, you know what? Trident R2 exists because of the problems that I had building the Trident. So I'm going to call it overall win for the community that my pain and suffering ends up being their benefit. So I'm going to call it overall a win.
>> Danny's a content creator as well. He makes both short form and long form. Of course, links are down below and like any good content creator, let me sure that we remind you to leave a like, get subscribed and leave a comment if you've ever done this too cuz we can't be the only ones, right? Your stealth changer content is just incredible.
>> The first time I saw one of your reels on it I'm like, he's going places. I mean, he might be going to needing a new therapist cuz he's going to end up going insane.
>> Going to therapy.
>> But walk me through what was going on in your head when that happened. So you were filming it. What were you filming it for?
>> All right. So you know I built the original stealth changer and the content that you're talking about the reals.
That was the original build and like the process of getting through it and all the headaches in its first iteration.
And now I'm working on a video where I'm upgrading every aspect of it to get prepared to put a box turtle on every single tool. There are a bunch of upgrades to support that that I'm working on or at least stuff that is super cool that I want to do before we get to that point because that's the end goal is 24 colors. Right now I was I'm upgrading the board in order to make Z faster like I was talking about and doing that have to go to Kraken to do that. We finally got it wired and turned on and for the first boot up the pie didn't turn on and the screen didn't turn on and you know this isn't my first time with turning on a printer for the first time and something not turning on.
With the micron build that I did the micron stealth changer that was the same story like I turned it on and like nothing powered on and I'm like oh no.
It start smelling [snorts] smelling for the smoke >> Anyone that's been around electronics long enough you know that smell. You know the look and you know the >> [laughter] >> What's what's going on? So you know I'm not new to this and so it was like okay so we have power on the Kraken but we don't have it on the pie and so this is weird and so it's like okay so we're missing 5 volt and we're missing 3.3.
And so that was when I'm we were started diagnosing okay is the pie actually getting power? Started doing a continuity test on the wires. Are they good? Is there anything broken in the wires? They were good. Then it started one of my friends recommended checking the fan headers because you can put a jumper in for you know different voltage fans and he's like let's just see if you have 5 volts at the header. Now in hindsight hindsight's 20/20 the Kraken has an LED to let you know if you have 5 volts or not. It was not on so nothing was going to have 5 volts, but we know in the middle of it when you're in that that that anxiety moment of oh no, what is going on?
>> thinking clearly.
>> Yeah, you're not thinking of that.
You're not thinking of that. And keep in mind this is my first Kraken, so also was not really paying attention to it.
And so I'm I'm hitting it with the multimeter and accidentally jumped the 24 and 12-volt pins.
And immediately went up and just sparked and then smoke came out and I was like 12-volt LED starts flashing at me. I'm like, well, that's that's game over. And then later on found out when I got the new Kraken in, which was relatively recently, started one by one checking each connector making sure that everything was wired up correctly and found out that I pinned out the Z probe incorrectly. So I was running straight to ground and straight to 5-volt when I should have been running straight to signal and ground. And so when it was plugged in it was immediately grounding out 5-volt.
>> Which is why you didn't have 5 volts.
>> That's why I didn't have 5 volts. That's why I didn't have 3.3 as well. It was a safety feature. And so yeah, so the the first Kraken probably would have been fine if I hadn't have done that. If I would have just gone through with connectors, so you know, take that from me. Try that first before you start going around with the multimeter. Either or is fine. It's just, you know, one's probably going to have less issues than the other potential problems.
>> How are you not scared now?
>> Yeah, exactly. It's like when I was putting in the second board it was very like, all right, let's make sure that everything's okay.
>> Yeah, it's like you're just dripping sweat everywhere. You're shaking like crazy. Now how much are those Kraken boards? Is there like an octopus is like 30, 40 bucks?
>> They're like 130.
>> And it's how many stepper drivers?
>> They're built in. They're like under the heat sink.
>> Right, but how many of them are there?
>> Eight, I think. Yeah.
>> Got a lot of opportunity there.
>> I'm glad that we're past the point. You know what I'm saying? We're past that speed bump. I've had so many speed bumps in this build. Right now I'm dealing with Oh, so when you go from a one Kraken to a 1.1, There's actually quite a There's a insert card that they send you and they're like, "Hey, this is different. Oh no. You need to change your configs." When we first turned it on, it started moving it trying to get beacon working on it. When we were moving it around, you know, we would send it to home and when it would home, it would like just go like zigzag motion back. And so, it's just getting the wrong amperage. [music] >> not even close to being right. It's not like it's backwards. It zigzags like >> Well, we And we thought that it was a physical problem like there was an actual issue with it. And so, I'm like looking at it trying to see if there's any actual like belt tension's messed up or something along those lines.
>> Not a good sign.
>> and then I actually did find I did find a printed piece that was broken. That's very important. So, that's being replaced right now. I have the prints done on my U1.
>> Interesting.
>> It's unfortunate.
>> So, looking back at the error, when the smoke let out, did you instantly know what you did wrong or were you just like, "Crap"?
>> I First, it was an adrenaline rush. I knew what I was doing at the time and so, I had a Oh my god, what just happened? And then I watched it back and I was like, "Oh."
>> That's what happened.
>> what happened.
>> [laughter] >> So, it was uh I'm glad that I had it on film and that'll make my video. That's going to be my thumbnail.
>> Blowing up a board >> never fun. Never fun. Especially that board. But we'll I mean, we're getting through it. It's one of those things you just roll with the punches. Um I'm very much you just keep on keeping on.
>> Is there like a teachable moment here?
You're not the first and you won't be the last. So, what could be yours from this scenario?
>> Don't listen to your friends.
Don't listen to your friends in diagnosing.
>> Oh, okay. I didn't know if that was like don't listen to your friends and build a stealth changer.
>> No. No. [laughter] No, definitely build a stealth changer. Go to stealth stealthchanger.com if you want to do that. We didn't have to go to the fan headers to check if 5 V was there and we also could have noticed that the 5 V LED was turned off. So, I give him crap all the time about it. But um no, I mean, a real teachable moment is just probably live electronics. You probably just want to turn your printer off if you're going to try to diagnose where the issues lie, you know, it's just >> How else are you going to find the 5-V rail not working? Cuz when the whole printer is off, the LED is off then, too.
>> You know, in the heat of the moment, you know what I mean? And and also be more precise with your multimeter when you're when you're pin [laughter] just checking everything. Just be more precise in your movements. It's like a game of Operation.
>> If people want to follow the progress of not only the rebuild, but your future projects, where can they find you?
>> youtube.com/neilcoiprints.
Really anything.
linktr.ee/neilcoiprints.
I've got Instagram, Facebook, X, everything, TikTok. I do shorts to build up, and then I do a giant ending video as a wrap-up cuz I think that it's more fun to see short bites of a project on the way to the giant wrap-up. It's more fun for me to make those videos, and it's more fun to view.
>> And of course, you can find all those links to follow Danny down in that description. Well, car to his channel, so you guys go take a watch because these stealth changers, tap changers, any tool changer that you're building yourself, you thought tool changers were complicated? You ain't seen nothing yet.

>> Hey, how bloody tall is he?
>> Uh like 5'1, 5'2.
>> Give or take. No, 6'7.
>> [laughter] >> That was good.
>> Neither of us planned that. That was so well timed. Uh
