[00:03:23]Hey Anna, tiny favor. Hey Anna, got 5 minutes?" And somehow 5 minutes turns into my entire evening.

[00:03:29]>> Okay, so this is about boundaries.

[00:03:32]>> Yes, Jake. Thank you for giving my panic a title.

[00:03:35]>> You're welcome. I mean, I feel bad saying no, so now I've accidentally created this whole fake sick person storyline.

[00:03:41]>> Wow. So, your master plan was to fake an illness and then hide in a coffee shop right across from his office.

[00:03:47]>> I didn't say it was a good plan.

[00:03:49]>> Yeah. No, it's kind of terrible.

[00:03:50]>> Are you helping me or judging me?

[00:03:53]>> A little bit of both, >> Jake.

[00:03:54]>> Fine. Fine. Let me think. Okay, new plan. We can go out the side door.

[00:04:52]>> Because in movies and series, people usually do not speak like a textbook.

[00:04:56]They panic, they joke, they interrupt, they hide things, they use expressions, and their words blend together.

[00:05:07]>> Not rush, not overload you, just one layer at a time.

[00:05:12]>> First the story, then the sounds, then the expressions, then the attitude behind the words. And later, we'll give you more movie style phrases, slang, idioms, and modern expressions you can listen for in movies and series, >> including one of my favorites. I didn't see it coming.

[00:05:34]>> So, first, let's understand the scene.

[00:05:36]>> Anna and I are in a coffee shop.

[00:05:39]Everything seems normal.

[00:05:40]>> I am relaxed. Jake has just arrived. We are about to talk.

[00:05:44]>> Then I see someone by the door, >> my old boss. And that becomes a problem because Anna told him she was sick.

[00:06:00]>> So, the story is simple. Anna wants to escape. I try to help, but I also judge her a little.

[00:06:10]>> So, now that you understand the situation, the English will become much easier. That is important. In movies, you do not need every word first. You need the situation.

[00:06:23]>> Where are they? What is happening? Who is nervous? Who is joking?

[00:06:28]>> Once you understand that, your brain can start predicting the meaning.

[00:06:34]>> Now, let's listen to the first fast line from the scene.

[00:07:06]>> You may know the words did and you, but your ears may not expect to hear did you. So, your English is not bad. Your ears are just learning a new sound pattern.

[00:07:23]>> Good. Just notice the shape of the sound.

[00:07:26]>> Another fast line was this.

[00:07:38]>> What are you talking about?

[00:07:40]>> What you talking about? In casual speech, what are you can become what you.

[00:09:26]>> Now let's move from sounds to expressions. The first expression is don't play innocent.

[00:09:33]>> Let's go back to that moment for a second.

[00:09:35]>> Come on, don't play innocent. That guy by the door, isn't that your old boss?

[00:09:39]Don't play innocent means do not pretend you do not know what I am talking about.

[00:09:44]>> So, it has a little attitude.

[00:09:46]>> Yes, it can sound playful. It can sound suspicious or it can sound a little accusing.

[00:09:51]>> Like if Jake eats the last piece of cake and then says, "What cake?" I can say, "Don't play innocent, Jake. I saw the plate.

[00:10:02]>> So, this is not formal English. It is natural conversational English.

[00:10:06]>> Very common in movies, friendships, arguments, and playful teasing. The next phrase is very natural.

[00:10:13]>> Let's hear how it sounded in the scene.

[00:10:15]I didn't want to get into the whole thing.

[00:10:17]>> The clean version is I did not want to get into the whole thing.

[00:10:22]>> And get into here means explain or discuss something in detail. So, Anna means I did not want to explain the full story.

[00:10:32]>> Maybe the story is too long.

[00:10:34]>> Maybe it is uncomfortable.

[00:10:36]>> Maybe it is awkward.

[00:10:38]>> Or maybe you lied about being sick and then went out for a cheesecake.

[00:10:45]>> That too.

[00:10:46]>> But notice how natural this phrase is.

[00:10:48]People use it when they do not want to explain everything. I wanted to tell her what happened, but I didn't want to get into the whole thing at work.

[00:10:58]>> Nice. That sounds very real.

[00:11:00]>> Now, one of the most useful expressions from the scene.

[00:11:04]>> Don't even get me started.

[00:11:06]>> Now, listen to how I used it in the scene. Don't even get me started.

[00:11:11]>> This means I have a lot to say about this. Usually because I am annoyed, frustrated, or emotional. It's like saying, "Please do not open this topic because I may complain for a long time."

[00:11:24]>> Sometimes for 20 minutes, >> sometimes longer.

[00:11:28]>> You can say, "Don't even get me started on traffic."

[00:11:33]>> Or, "Don't even get me started on people who say quick question and then give you a whole project."

[00:11:40]>> That one was personal.

[00:11:42]>> Very personal. But notice how this expression is useful because it carries emotion. It's not just information.

[00:11:50]>> It tells the listener, "I have feelings about this."

[00:11:54]>> Now, let's talk about sarcasm.

[00:11:56]>> This is a huge part of movie English.

[00:11:59]Let's hear a short exchange from the scene.

[00:12:02]>> Yeah. No, it's kind of terrible.

[00:12:04]>> This line can confuse learners because Jake says, "Yeah," first, >> right? But in this kind of sentence, yeah. No usually means no.

[00:12:13]>> So you were not agreeing with me.

[00:12:16]>> Not even close.

[00:12:17]>> You were judging my plan >> with friendship.

[00:12:21]>> So the real meaning is no, Anna, that plan is actually bad.

[00:12:26]>> But because I say it with a dry teasing tone, it sounds funny instead of cruel.

[00:12:31]>> And that is important.

[00:12:33]>> In movies, meaning often comes from tone. The words say one thing, the voice tells you the real feeling. Another funny line was when Jake made a plan.

[00:12:43]>> Here's that moment from the scene. Okay, new plan. We can go out the side door.

[00:12:48]>> There's a side door?

[00:12:49]>> I don't know. I just said it with confidence.

[00:12:52]>> This is funny because Jake sounds like he knows what he's doing, >> but I absolutely do not.

[00:12:58]>> So, the joke is the gap between your confident voice and your actual knowledge.

[00:13:03]>> Confident voice, empty information. That should be on a t-shirt.

[00:13:08]>> This is called hidden meaning. The sentence is simple, but the humor is underneath it.

[00:13:13]>> And movies use this all the time.

[00:13:15]>> Characters often say something simple, but the real meaning comes from the situation, the tone, and what we already know.

[00:13:22]>> Now, let's look at one tiny moment.

[00:13:25]>> Anna says my name. Let's replay that little moment.

[00:13:29]>> Jake.

[00:13:29]>> Fine. Fine. Let me think. That is only one word >> but it carries a whole message.

[00:13:35]>> It can mean stop joking, help me. I am serious. Do something now.

[00:13:42]>> Same word, different tone, different meaning.

[00:13:45]>> Let's try it slowly.

[00:13:47]>> Jake, >> that sounds friendly.

[00:13:50]>> Jake, >> that sounds dangerous.

[00:13:52]>> Jake, >> that means help me right now.

[00:13:55]>> So, when you watch movies, listen to the emotion, not only the vocabulary.

[00:14:00]Sometimes one word gives you the whole mood of the scene. Now let's talk about small words >> like okay, so fine and I mean.

[00:14:10]>> Yes, these words look easy but they carry a lot of attitude in spoken English.

[00:14:16]>> For example, I said I mean I feel bad saying no.

[00:14:20]>> I mean gives Anna a moment to explain herself. It softens what she is saying.

[00:14:26]>> You said fine fine let me think. That means I am giving in >> finally.

[00:14:32]>> Yes, I was joking before, but now I'm trying to help.

[00:14:37]>> And you said, "So, your master plan was?"

[00:14:42]>> That little word so introduces a summary, >> but it also adds teasing.

[00:14:48]>> So, your master plan was to fake an illness and hide in a coffee shop.

[00:14:53]>> When you say it like that, it sounds worse.

[00:14:56]>> It was worse. This is why small words matter.

[00:15:00]>> In real English, small words often carry big feelings.

[00:15:05]>> Now, before we replay the scene, here is a simple movie listening skill.

[00:15:10]>> Do not try to translate every word while watching a movie >> because by the time you translate one sentence, the next three lines are already gone.

[00:15:20]>> Instead, listen in layers.

[00:15:23]>> First layer, catch the situation.

[00:15:25]>> Where are they? What is happening?

[00:15:28]>> Second layer, catch the emotion.

[00:15:30]>> Are they nervous, angry, joking, embarrassed, or confused?

[00:15:36]>> Third layer, catch key words.

[00:15:39]>> In our scene, words like boss, sick, side, door, plan, weird.

[00:15:45]>> Fourth layer, catch fast sounds.

[00:15:49]>> Did you, wa, gota, wanna, lemmy, don't know, gonna. You do not need to catch everything at once.

[00:15:58]>> Even strong listeners use context. They predict meaning from the situation.

[00:16:03]>> So when you watch a movie, don't only ask, "What did they say?"

[00:16:07]>> Also ask, "What is happening? What are they feeling? What are they trying to do?"

[00:16:13]>> That changes the way you listen.

[00:16:16]>> Before we replay the scene, let's give you a few more movie style phrases. Yes, these are common in modern conversations, movies, and series.

[00:16:25]>> You do not need to memorize all of them today. Just start noticing them.

[00:16:30]>> Think of this as a little phrase bank for your ears.

[00:16:33]>> First, I didn't see it coming.

[00:16:36]>> This means something surprised you. You did not expect it.

[00:16:40]>> When he quit his job suddenly, I didn't see it coming. In movies, characters say this after a surprise, betrayal, plot twist, or unexpected problem. Another similar phrase is that came out of nowhere.

[00:16:55]>> It means something happened suddenly without warning.

[00:16:59]>> That argument came out of nowhere.

[00:17:01]>> Very useful for dramatic scenes. Next, you've lost me.

[00:17:06]>> That does not mean I physically lost you. No, it means I do not understand what you are saying anymore.

[00:17:14]>> Wait, you've lost me. Start from the beginning. Next. I'm not buying it.

[00:17:19]>> This means I do not believe you.

[00:17:22]>> You said you were sick, but you're eating cheesecake in a coffee shop.

[00:17:27]Yeah, I'm not buying it.

[00:17:29]>> That hurts because it is accurate.

[00:17:32]Another useful one. That's not the point.

[00:17:35]>> You say this when someone focuses on the wrong detail. Yes, the cheesecake was good, but that's not the point.

[00:17:42]>> The point is I was supposed to be sick.

[00:17:45]Next. Don't twist my words.

[00:17:49]>> This means do not change what I said to make it sound different.

[00:17:53]>> I said I was tired. I didn't say I hated the party. Don't twist my words.

[00:17:59]>> Next. I'm not in the mood.

[00:18:02]>> This means I do not feel like doing something right now. I'm not in the mood to argue.

[00:18:08]>> Very common in emotional scenes. Next.

[00:18:12]Cut me some slack.

[00:18:14]>> This means please be less hard on me.

[00:18:17]>> Jake, cut me some slack. I panicked.

[00:18:20]>> I gave you a little slack. Not too much.

[00:18:23]Next. Let's not make this a thing.

[00:18:26]>> This means let's not turn this into a big issue.

[00:18:30]>> I was 5 minutes late. Let's not make this a thing. depends how often you are 5 minutes late. And finally, we'll figure it out.

[00:18:44]>> It is calm, reassuring, and very common in movies when people are stressed.
