In Colombian Spanish, 'miercoles' (Wednesday) is commonly used as a mild swear word or exclamation, similar to how English speakers might say 'shoot' or 'damn' when frustrated. The speaker explains that this euphemism allows Colombians to express frustration or annoyance in public settings while maintaining politeness, with the length of the word sometimes indicating the severity of the situation.

Why Colombians Say “Wednesday” When They’re Angry 😂本站添加:
I've been living in Bogota for 9 years.
And Colombians use Wednesday as a swear word.
Yes, let me explain.
Miercoles means Wednesday.
Sure.
But in Colombia, it's also a way to say something much worse.
You know, like when you hit your toe and instead of the real word, you say shoot in English or domedoga in Flemish or zut in French.
Same idea, but nicer words, right?
So, that's what miercoles is here. You drop your phone, miercoles.
Traffic is a disaster, miercoles.
Your tinto went cold, miercoles.
Clean, polite, but everybody knows exactly what you mean.
But then there is miercoles, the very long one that the A goes really long, no?
So, the shorter the miercoles, the less [snorts] problems you have. Losing your wallet is very miercoles.
But in Colombia, we use it for many, many times, so we have a lot of miercoles in Colombia.
Okay?
Um it's a way to keep it clean and not to swear too much in public, but everybody knows what you mean.
Um yeah, drop in the comments what miercoles or is in your language or what are you saying instead of not using the swear word all the time.
Drop it in the comments and I'm really curious about your miercoles.
Ciao.
