This 1900 Winton motor carriage uses a foot-operated throttle control system where pressing the foot button allows compressed air to escape, keeping the inlet valve fully open for full throttle, while lifting the foot increases air pressure around the valve spring, limiting the valve opening and reducing engine speed.

How does this ancient year old car work?!追加:
Heat. Heat.
When I was rebuilding the fuel feeder, some of you noticed that there was no way of controlling the how much air entered the engine. It looked like it would run at full throttle. To understand how it worked, I found the original patents were a great source of information. Alexander Winton created over a 100 automotive patents, although many were after the production of our Winton. He was full of ideas and open to sharing them. In 1901, he showed a certain Henry Ford how steering wheels could be made to work. He also gave away a a concept which revolutionized batteries, although this did also help the reliability of his motor carriages.
Anyway, back to engine control.
This is a patent diagram from 1898.
Like most engines of this era, there's no cam to open the inlet valve. It's an atmospheric valve. So, as the piston creates a vacuum, then the valve gets pushed down against a fairly weak spring. This lets the fuel air mix into the cylinder.
The engine also drives an air pump which pushes compressed air into pipes.
At the moment I have the foot operated valve fully open. The picture on the bottom of this diagram is just a larger illustration of the valve at the top.
With the foot button down, the engine's at full throttle. But if I lift my foot, then the button stops leaking air from the system and the pressure around the inlet valve spring increases. This limits the amount the inlet valve opens and so slows the engine.
Now let's see how that relates to the car. So here is the throttle valve and there it is on the car.
This is a slightly later patent diagram but from the same year. And you can quite clearly see the piston here which is exactly the same as we've got on the car.
Hey.
