If we talk particularly about this poem, The Highwayman, it is one of his most famous poems and we can say that it is still popular today. Okay, this is about the poet. Now, let us talk about the poem The Highwayman. The Highwayman is a narrative poem, guys. It means it tells a story. Okay, The Highwayman is a narrative poem, which means it tells a story. It is the story of a Highwayman and a young girl named Bess. These are main characters. Who are two main characters? Highwayman and Bess. They love each other very much, guys. The poem is full of love, suspense, sacrifice, courage, and sadness, we can say. So, through this story, the poet teaches us that true love is loyal, selfless, and stronger than death. This is a little about the poem. Now, let us talk about the summary so that you can get the broader idea.
Guys, the poem begins on a dark and stormy night, okay? Here basically, we will be finding that wind is blowing strongly and the poem says that the moon shines through the clouds. Okay, how the night is? Night is dark, stormy, wind is blowing, and the moon is shining through the clouds. In this mysterious atmosphere, a handsome Highwayman rides his horse towards an old inn. Guys, now you would have a doubt what is inn. Inn is nothing but a hotel, we can say.
Okay, there is a handsome and brave Highwayman who is riding his horse towards an old inn. Old inn means old hotel, we can say. The Highwayman is described as brave, confident, and attractive, guys. He wears fine clothes and carries weapons. Basically, he's not going to the inn for business or adventure. It means he's not going to this portal for business deal or any adventure. He comes there because he wants to meet Bess. Who is Bess? Bess is the girl he loves deeply. Basically, the poet creates a beautiful picture of the night and makes readers curious about what will happen next. So, in this paragraph, it is all about the night highwayman coming to the inn in order to meet his love Bess.
So, yeah, this is about all the night and highwayman. Next guys, Bess is waiting for the highwayman at the window. She is happy and excited to see him. When they meet, they spend some time talking to each other. Okay, the highwayman tells Bess that he is going away to collect gold. So, before leaving, he promises that he will come back before morning. He also says that even if danger comes in his way, he will return to meet her. Basically guys, this conversation shows how much they trust and love each other. The relationship is based on loyalty and commitment, we can say. Okay, they met, they talked, they spent some time, and later highwayman promised that he will return back soon once he collect the gold.
Now, guys, while the two lovers are talking, highwayman and Bess are talking, Tim, the ostler. Ostler means you you would have a doubt again. What is ostler?
Ostler is also known as hostler. Okay, H can also be kept. It can be pronounced ostler or hostler. Hostler means the person who is employed at inn or the person who is employed at hotel. Okay, highwayman came to hotel, right, in order to meet meet the girl Bess. So, there in the hotel there is a person who is working there or there is a person who is employed there. That person name is Tim. So, Tim the ostler secretly listens to their conversation. Tim also loves Bess, but Bess does not love him.
Okay. So, when Tim sees Bess with the highwayman, he becomes jealous and unhappy. Guys, he cannot accept that Bess loves someone else. Although Tim does not openly say anything, his jealousy later becomes the reason for the tragedy, okay? This part of the poem shows how jealousy can create problems in people's lives, okay? I hope you understood.
Now, the next day the highwayman does not return. Bess waits for him and starts worrying about him. As evening comes, a group of soldiers called the redcoats arrives at the inn. Means redcoats or these soldiers, they come to the hotel. They are searching for the highwayman because they want to capture him. Guys, the soldiers know that the highwayman will return to meet Bess. Therefore, they tie Bess up and place guards around her room. They plan to use her as a trap, okay? So, this part creates suspense because readers know that highwayman is in great danger, right? He is in great danger.
Bess quickly understand the soldiers' plan, guys. She knows that if the highwayman comes to the inn, he will be killed. Even though she is tied up and unable to move freely, she does not think about herself, okay? Her only concern is saving the highwayman. So, she struggles for hours to free herself.
Her hands become painful, but she continues trying because her love and determination is true. Guys, this part shows Bess' bravery and selflessness, you know? She is not thinking about herself. She is thinking about her love, who is highwayman. She knows that if highwayman comes to the hotel, definitely this soldier will kill him.
So, she's trying very hard to move from there.
At midnight, Bess hears the sound of horse hoofs, guys. She knows that highwayman is returning exactly as he promised. She notices a loaded gun near her. With great difficulty, she reaches the trigger with her finger. When the highwayman comes close to the inn, Bess pulls the trigger. The gun fires loudly, and the sound warns the highwayman that danger is waiting ahead. Sadly, the gunshot kills Bess instantly. She gives up her own life to save the man she loves. This is the most emotional and important part of the poem, guys. Bess, she lost her life in order to save highwayman. Now, you just try to understand or just try to feel how pure Bess' love was towards highwayman or highwayman's love was towards Bess, okay?
Yeah, I hope you understood.
Next, the highwayman hears the gunshot and immediately realizes that something is wrong, guys. He quickly turns his horse around and escapes from the soldiers. Later, he learns the truth about what happened. Like, he discovers that Bess sacrificed her life to save him. When he hears this, he becomes heartbroken, guys. He feels deep sadness and anger. He cannot bear the loss of the woman he loved so much, okay?
Then, the highwayman decides to return to the inn. Means, he decides to come back to the hotel. He wants to face the soldiers and take revenge for Bess' death. As he rides towards the inn, the soldiers see him. They shoot him, and he falls dead on the road. Now, both Bess and the highwayman have lost their lives. Their love story ends in tragedy, we can say.
Uh and although the two lovers die, their love does not disappear, okay? The poem says that on cold and windy nights, people still see the ghost of the highwayman riding towards the old inn, towards the old hotel. They also see Bess waiting for him at the window. So, these images show that their love continues even after death. The story becomes a legend that people remember forever, okay? So, yes, this is about the complete summary. The Highwayman is a beautiful and emotional poem about true love, we can say. Bess sacrifices her life to save the Highwayman, and the Highwayman remains loyal to her until the end. So guys, the poem teaches us the value of love, courage, sacrifice, and devotion. Basically, it reminds us that true love is powerful and can never be destroyed even by death. So, this was the complete explanation, guys. As I said you, this is the brief understanding of the summary.
