Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719 by Daniel Defoe, established the foundational template for all survival literature by depicting a shipwreck survivor who transforms from a reckless adventurer into a resourceful islander through systematic problem-solving, psychological resilience, and gradual adaptation to extreme isolation, demonstrating that human beings possess remarkable capacity for endurance and self-reliance when stripped of familiar support systems.

Robinson Crusoe: The Original Survival StoryAdded:
Before survival shows, before desert island movies, there was Robinson Crusoe.
In 1719, Daniel Defoe published one of the most famous adventure [music] stories ever written.
But the story begins much earlier.
Robinson Crusoe is a young man from York, England. His father wants him to stay home, live [music] safely, and build a respectable life. But Crusoe does not want safety. He wants the sea.
In 1651, against his family's warnings, he leaves [music] home and boards a ship. Almost immediately, the sea answers him with danger. His first voyage nearly ends in disaster. But instead of turning [music] back for good, Crusoe keeps going. He is captured by pirates, he is enslaved, [music] he escapes, he reaches Brazil. For a while, he becomes a plantation owner.
>> [music] >> But the old hunger for risk returns.
Years later, Crusoe joins another voyage, this time across the Atlantic.
The ship is supposed to sail toward Africa, but a violent [music] storm drives it off course. In 1659, near the mouth of the Orinoco River, off the coast of South America, the ship runs aground. The waves break it apart. One by one, the men are lost. Crusoe is thrown toward shore by the sea.
>> [music] >> When he wakes, he is the only survivor.
No crew, no rescue, no way home, only an island, a wrecked ship, and the terrifying silence of being alone. At first, survival is simple. Fresh water, shelter, food, [music] fire. Crusoe swims back to the wreck and salvages what he can before the sea destroys it completely. [music] Tools, guns, powder, cloth, food, a bible. [music] Even the ship's dog and cat survive with him. Slowly, he begins to build a life. He digs into a cave, he makes a fenced [music] home, he marks the days on a wooden post so time does not disappear. He plants grain, [music] he raises goats, he learns to make pottery, he dries grapes into raisins, he turns the island into a strange little [music] kingdom of one.
But the real battle is not only against hunger or weather. It is against fear, regret, loneliness, and the voice in his own mind asking why he ever left home.
Then, after many years, Crusoe sees something in the sand, a footprint, not his own.
That single mark becomes one of the most famous moments in [music] adventure literature because it means he is not alone.
The island is no longer only a prison.
It is [music] a mystery. Later, Crusoe meets Friday, a man he rescues and brings into his life on the island.
>> [music] >> Together, they face dangers and the possibility of escape.
After 28 years away, Crusoe finally returns to England, but he does not return as the same man who left.
Robinson Crusoe became the original survival story because it gave [music] the world a pattern: the shipwreck, the island, the salvaged tools, the lonely years, the slow rebuilding of a life from almost nothing.
And beneath all [music] of it, one question remains: If everything familiar was taken from you, [music] what would be left? And what kind of person would you become?
