How George Floyd is being remembered, 6 years laterAdded:
Today marks six years since police killed George Floyd in Minneapolis and sent a shock wave around the world. As Esme Murphy reports, people have been gathering all day at 38th in Chicago to remember and celebrate Floyd's life.
The somber remembrance was sprinkled with joy as a community came together to honor George Floyd, who lost his life at this intersection of 38th in Chicago, now known as George Floyd Square.
Floyd's uncle, Selwin Jones, got the news the next morning.
>> I've basically been going back through the time because when I heard what happened to my nephew on the 26th, my whole life changed. The whole world changed.
>> George Floyd's girlfriend, Courtney Ross, delivered books to one of the many stands that held memorabilia about a man whose death changed a city and a nation.
>> Floyd would like it like this. Floyd would want everybody celebrating like he never liked to see tears in anybody's eyes. And I tell people all the time whenever he saw anybody in need, he would take his big arm, you know, and wrap it around them.
>> Just the aftermath of things over there on Lake Street.
>> There are a few new businesses here like this photo studio where King Demetrius Pendleton displays his work focusing on the killing and destructive aftermath.
And I'm asking that people just don't come out on this particular day, but come out all particular times because this community needs their help.
>> Among those who live the trauma, one of the Minneapolis firefighters who helped save the city from burning.
>> I feel that there's a tremendous amount of growth that can take place here. A tremendous amount of uh healing still has to come forward.
>> The future of what George Floyd Square will eventually look like remains unresolved. Council President Elliot Payne tells me that one proposal will go before a council committee and the full council in early June. But for now, this remains a place where people will gather and remember. with photojournalist Mike Durburger, Esme Murphy, WCCCO News, George Floyd
