Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) can spread between dairy farms, often without showing clinical signs in infected cows, necessitating mandatory weekly testing and quarantine protocols to prevent further transmission; however, consuming pasteurized dairy products poses no public health risk as the virus is killed during the pasteurization process.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza found in Utah dairyAdded:
news today a sample from a Cache County Dairy has tested positive for bird flu.
The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food says it has begun mandatory weekly testing for dairies in Cache County. If a dairy test positive, it'll be put under quarantine and no lactating cows will be allowed to leave because the virus tends to spread from dairy to dairy.
>> Some of these dairies have had it before and so they're not going to show those clinical signs. They may not be aware that they have it and so we want to do weekly testing just to make sure that that we identify it as soon as possible and can take steps to control it.
>> Now as far as we know, there's only one positive case in the state. We're told all testing costs will be covered by the federal government. UDAF says there's no risk to the public as long as you're eating and drinking pasteurized dairy products.
