Coilover suspension systems, such as the BC Racing BR series demonstrated in this video, provide adjustable damping and ride height for improved vehicle handling and stance. These systems allow mechanics to customize suspension stiffness and ride height, with the dampening typically set to a middle position (around 30 clicks) for balanced performance. The installation process involves removing the original suspension components, lubricating bolts, and fitting the new coilovers while considering the vehicle's center of gravity, which is particularly important in dry sump engines like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage's 4.3L V8.

Prerequisite Knowledge
- Concept 01Basic principles of automotive suspension systems, including the roles of springs, shocks/dampers, and struts in maintaining tire contact and ride comfort.
- Concept 02Key vehicle dynamics concepts such as center of gravity, weight distribution, and their influence on handling and stability.
- Concept 03Fundamental terminology like ride height, damping (compression and rebound), and camber/pl Toe alignment.
- Concept 04Differences between OEM stock suspension and aftermarket performance upgrades.
Coilovers Compromise Ride Comfort and Daily Drivability for Street UseCounterpoint
While coilover systems like BC Racing BR series offer tunable damping and height for track-focused handling and aesthetics, critics argue they severely degrade ride quality on public roads. Stiff setups (even at mid-settings like 30 clicks) transmit road imperfections harshly, reducing tire contact patch on uneven surfaces and increasing fatigue for daily drivers. OEM suspensions in vehicles like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage are engineered for balance—integrating adaptive damping, precise geometry, and safety features optimized around the car's center of gravity and dry sump engine. Aftermarket coilovers often lack this integration, risking camber issues, accelerated wear, and suboptimal aerodynamics from extreme lowering. For non-track use, enthusiasts recommend retaining or upgrading OEM components for superior all-around performance, versatility, and longevity over 'stanced' compromises.
Where to go next
- Step 01Post-installation procedures including wheel alignment, corner balancing, and geometry checks.
- Step 02Advanced damping and preload tuning for specific applications like street, track, or autocross driving.
- Step 03Integration of coilovers with complementary mods such as sway bars, bushings, and brake upgrades.
- Step 04Vehicle-specific considerations for high-performance cars, e.g., dry sump systems and their impact on suspension setup.
- Step 05Safety, legal compliance, and maintenance best practices for modified suspensions in real-world use.

Lowering an Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Added:[laughter] >> Hey chicken.
Not many people modify these. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage manual.
>> [music] >> Already fitted spaces, refurb the wheels, new tires on.
The base is ready to go. Next thing, coil overs.
So, we've gone for the cheapest of the cheap of the BC brand.
The BC BR series.
Still pretty good coil over there.
So, these are single adjustment, like damping at top.
Height adjustment.
Spring justable there.
Pretty standard coil over. Troy, it's fitting time.
Let's get these fitted.
Right, whilst Troy is getting rid of his Nando's he had earlier, I'm going to go around the car and lubricate all the bolts ready to undo them.
20 year old rusty British bolts.
10:00 at night, but I'm fed, I'm bored, and I'm ready to go. I'll have a cup of tea in a minute.
Some biscuits.
I don't know what it's going to be like to do. Never done an Aston Martin coil over before. I really like these actually. I've always wanted one.
So, I look forward to seeing how this drives when it's not on 20 year old old suspension.
Steve's left me a whole toolbox. He's left us his whole toolbox ready in the area where we're working, full of tools.
Thank you very much, Stephen.
I'm currently sizing up everything.
That's a That's an 18.
I need an 18 on a gun.
>> I'll take knuckles or you thinking about a cheat?
>> I don't know.
>> Might be a cheat.
>> to undo first and see what what's loose.
>> small 3/8?
>> Uh big gun.
I need an 18 half inch.
Well, he has spent some cash on Snap-on, hasn't he?
Look at the Easter.
>> He's the money man.
>> Tears up.
>> he was an apprentice.
>> Yeah, when I was an apprentice, all I could afford was Halfords.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> Lovely, look at that.
I decided I'm going to just take this upper arm.
So we can pull it out like that and hopefully the coil over does whatever.
Jiggle out.
Just get this bolt out, innit? I think Oh, there's copper grease on this bolt.
Someone's been here before unless that's from when it was hand built in some English factory or else maybe he was having a cigar.
Oh, oh, look at that.
Jesus Christ, look at the [ __ ] room we've got now, Troy.
Uh so far so good, to be fair. Um that's quite nice to work on at this moment.
Please hopefully not have ruined that.
What do you think of the Aston Martin Troyer?
>> It's all right.
It's quite cool to see some bits being done to one.
Looking for your light on.
>> Well, got the 3/8 DeWalt gun out now.
Um Steve's tool again, yeah.
And I did not have the luxury of that when I was an apprentice, so I guess I'm paying him too much. Strut brace is off.
Lovely.
We're taking that out cuz it's not very nice and it's old and 20 years old and boring. It actually looks quite cool, but >> some good nick for its age.
>> Yeah, top mounts look nice. Are these the solid ones or the Oh, they're the rubber ones, which is nice.
It gives you so much horrible hard ride.
We're just going to set the the dampening to in the middle. I think about 30 clicks normally.
Put it to 15 and then the driver can do what they want with that.
Beep.
Yeah, so pretty cool V8 this. It's very low mounted because it's dry sump actually. Did you know? There's the uh oil tank there. Um obviously the benefit of that is so the engine sits lower so the lower of gravity center the center of gravity is lower.
But naturally aspirated 4.3 V8 big old intake good engine.
The strut brace is on as uh Cookie, Baldy, as a bit of an in joke guys really.
>> Cookie gives you the in there.
>> Yeah.
Two teas? No sugar?
>> One sugar.
>> No sugar.
>> One sugar.
>> Troy, what do you reckon? Should I put a bit of pre-workout in Troy's?
Don't tell him that and he'll watch the video.
When he finally watches the video he'll be like, "What?"
Excuse you.
>> It's the tiniest amount of pre-workout.
I don't think you'd even notice it in there.
>> Pre-workout.
>> A pre-workout tea.
>> A pre-workout tea.
>> I hoped you wouldn't notice it and then you'd see it in the video.
Oh my god. Typical English man in a that's been shopping with his duffel bag and his blue jeans.
>> And his Air Jordans.
>> I hate doing anything interior.
>> I hope not.
>> What the [ __ ] >> sealed in.
>> Oh my god.
Troy, there's definitely there's definitely no access in there.
It's not behind the It's not behind the arch liner or something, is it?
>> It's not a film.
Oh.
>> Oh, no.
>> Yes, it is.
>> Oh, no.
Why Why don't we take that? We got all the nobbins back in now.
Hey, it's [snorts] proper British, isn't it? Look.
That looks like a kit car.
Nice.
Exhaust valves up.
Taking the handbrake caliper off cuz the shock is up. It's still not coming out.
[ __ ] you now.
Fitting this to this, but not yet. So, I'm just giving this this just so I can get the camera.
>> Oh, what's taking the caliper off?
>> Don't shoot me, you little prick.
Look at him.
Look at HIM [ __ ] CHILL.
>> [laughter] >> WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT?
IT'S NICE, ISN'T IT? ALL IN.
>> How was it in the back ones?
>> Um really [ __ ] to be honest, mate.
Not as nice as the front, was it, Troy?
Is it, Troy?
Yeah, I mean >> pad?
>> Need new ones in there.
>> Where's the pads gone?
>> Yeah, well, yeah. Not good.
Um really nice on the front.
It's not that bad in the rear, just old bolts, and rusty screws, and arch liners.
But, it's probably cuz of the time of night.
What is it now? About midnight, so I think we've done pretty well considering we've never done it before.
Right, that is us for tonight.
I think we've done quite well. Not not 2 and a bit hours.
>> [snorts] >> whilst doing other bits and bobs.
The Aston Martin has now got BC coil overs on it.
So, let's drop it down and see what it looks like.
