British pubs serve as essential community gathering spaces that have historically been integral to local social life, providing affordable entertainment, social interaction, and a sense of community identity. The video demonstrates this through a comprehensive pub crawl across Deeside, showcasing various types of establishments including traditional village pubs, gastro taverns, social clubs, and sports bars, each contributing uniquely to the social fabric of their communities. The presenter emphasizes that these spaces are 'ingrained in our very fabric' of British society and should be protected at all costs, as losing them means losing an important part of community identity and social cohesion.

A Mega Pub Crawl Around Deeside (Connah's Quay, Shotton, Ewloe, Hawarden, Mancott, Sandycroft)Added:
[music] [music] [music] [music] >> Howdy, howdy. Welcome back. Right, it is the final day on the road. It is Saturday.
So, three great days on the Fylde Coast.
And today, I have made it back to North Wales, uh Deeside area, at a little place called Northop Hall to kick things off today. And I'm going to get round with my buddy Eddie.
Going to get round as many pubs in the Deeside area as we can. I mean, I don't really know what the plan is. I've let let Eddie sort that out. So, it's a case of get round what we can. And the uh the man himself is here already. Wearing a very cool-looking T-shirt, if I do say so myself. So, yeah, let's uh let's make a plan. Let's go, mate. Pub number one of the day is this. So, it's pub one of the day. It's a Marston's.
It's called the Top Monkey. And again, I don't know if I've done a Top Monkey.
Anyway, that's another Marston's.
But this one, yeah, Top Monkey. So, it's just here in uh in this little village.
Northop Hall, I think the village is called. So, let's go into the Top Monkey. It's a very nice-looking little pub to kick a start the day in, actually. I said there, you know, I said I'm not Yeah, I'm not Marston's biggest believer or fan, but they I will say, credit where credit's due, they do have some uh some gorgeous-looking little buildings.
And this is certainly one of those uh gorgeous-looking little buildings. Got a nice uh nice little bit of history up on the wall and things, which is always nice. All the old licensees and a few old pictures. I I like it when a pub embraces its history. So, that's a that's a plus point. But it's a lovely-looking little place. Car's going on one of the Marston's own ones, a Wainwright's.
But it's uh it's very nicely decked out in here.
Very sweet-looking little place.
It's got crisp ancestry.
It's got yeah, it's got all that history.
Up on the wall and stuff which I think is I think it's cool. A nice little touch. I don't know about it. Feels like a a proper little village proper little village local.
It's fine.
Nothing wrong with a nothing wrong with a little village local, is there?
They make the world go round and long may they be protected. And as well as they have a nice looking a little pub area that they've got in there.
They've got this rather beautiful space outside. Quite a beer garden. Yeah, not bad a not a bad little master, is this?
Next little port of call then is in Connah's Quay.
A place that I have heard of a lot and I always like yeah, one day I'll go to Connah's Quay. I'm finally here. And stop number two then will be this.
This one then is Wepre Bar and Grill.
And it looks pretty darn cool from the outside. I would say family dining style place. There was Sunday carvery, that children's play area, large beer garden.
Getting the benches and stuff all ready for the summer at the moment as well.
But yeah, I like the I like the vibe of this. Let's go and see what it's like.
It is a very very smart, isn't it?
It's been been beautifully furnished.
And and definitely definitely a touch of class oozes throughout the throughout the way they've done it, so.
Looks it looks a lot nicer inside than than it does outside. I wasn't expecting a lot from the outside. But inside top job. Starting from the door, so I have just found out just been informed this is one of Gastro Taverns's places.
Red Lion in Penford that I did the other day. Yeah, Gastro Taverns are absolutely brilliant at what they do. So that thoroughly explains why it is so beautiful in here. So there's a little tap range.
This is the the bar space. But you see what I mean, don't you? Before uh when I said how nicely decked out it is.
And this is the the restaurant bit as well through in here. So, these guys, honestly, they seriously know their stuff.
And yeah, I wasn't I hadn't done much research today on what I was getting and where I was going. So, I didn't really know I was going to come across a gastro tavern's place. But as you can see, it is absolutely beautiful. And it's another one that does have, yeah, I said this huge great beer garden space out here as well.
Sticking with Connah's Quay. Apparently, there are seven pubs of Connah's Quay that are all together. So, the second of those is this one called The Broad Oak. And again, I'm very impressed with some of the beer gardens in this area. So, basically, Morrison's car park just there.
Come through the gates and you'll see the Broad Oak. But yeah, they've got some excellent beer garden spaces.
It's definitely a a great place to hang out in the summer and the sunshine, I would have guaranteed you. This guy here is the Broad Oak. What is on here on the bar? They've got Guinness on tap.
They've got Peroni, Guinness, Red Stripe, Carling, and stuff up there. But yeah, good little good little place to watch the sport. It's actually a It's actually a good little bar to be fair.
So, people people in for watching the Liverpool and Chelsea game. Dartboards, free function room hire and stuff as well. But it's rustic in here. Rustic. I quite I quite like the look of it.
Pretty cool looking little place with a lovely exposed brick wall and things as well. Pretty cool looking little place with a lovely exposed brick wall and things as well. But I'm still still very very impressed by that that garden space. But definitely a definitely a football pub. Great place to come and watch it.
There you go. So, this is the the function room bit as well. Actually quite a big space. So, it's actually bigger than the the main part of the pub itself. But this is quite a space to to hire out.
Yeah.
Very very decent.
Pub number four is one that belongs to my old mate.
Good old Humphrey Smith. It's called Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. So, basically this is going to be the majority of what we're going to be able to show you of this one because as we know, the miserable old sod will not allow filming and things particularly inside. So, I'll try and get you a tiny little view of it, maybe. But, that's basically it.
You know, that's all we can do for you.
From one of Humphrey's to one of my most recurring brands on the crawl for sure.
I'm sure you can all tell by the branding that that is a Craft Union that I'm talking about, of course. The Red Hall.
I mean, Red Hall, Red Hall. I mean, I would say Red Hall because I talk quite quickly and apparently that's the way they pronounce it round here. Anyway, Eddie grew up on this actual street. So, if anyone was going to know, it would be him. Let's go and see it.
The Red Hall. This This was described to me as being a proper boozer. And it is just a proper boozer. So, landlady is absolutely lovely. She's been here for about eight years. Apparently, Stonegate would have bought this around 10 years ago. So, They are what they are. They They don't make any bones about what they what their their clientele is, what their what their drinks range is.
Reasonably cheap prices like always.
Good place to watch the sport. Split into two sides. Show you what I can.
This is your bar right inside. Obviously, a Liverpool-Chelsea game is now half time.
Later on, but this is the This is the bar space. Dartboard in one corner. And I'm going to have a wander on through to the other side. But, one side.
Let's Let's head on uh head on through into the other bit. Got a low maintenance beer garden out to the rear and this this decent space in here as well. So it's a decent size and a decent version. The bar itself pretty good looking. Keep up my little run from the last few days of doing a social club at least one social club on every day.
The next up is this.
Deeside Naval Club.
Got a big social club.
Decent size, isn't it?
I love these places. Honestly, good prices, always good people. That's the thing. They've They've been the heart of the communities for years and years on end and they must be protected at all costs.
Because you lose this, you lose part of the community and nobody wants that. So Deeside Naval Club, next stop.
They're a true British institution, no matter what way you look at it. Social club is something like ingrained in our our very fabric.
Our very fabric of our souls.
And anyone who sort of grew up in in the sort of areas like that I did like ours in the states and things like that. Like you you you know what social club was back in the day and things. You know, my dad used to take me over there, game of darts. He sent me sent me in with panda pop and a bag of crisps while he had a game of darts, you know? Hey, worked all right for Luke Littler, didn't it? Doing that. So So his dad took him to a few social clubs.
Cut us cut us snooker tables, good social sport, very cheap. There's your a line up. Pretty pretty social club-esque.
Yeah, two snooker tables and a and a big old space. Imagine some bingo or something going on in here like every every table for a little bit of live music up on the little stage up there. So good place to uh watch the football again as well. Big screens and things. Chilled out vibe.
They always are.
And then they put loads of things on.
Live singers, a country and western party DJs, all sorts going on. And this is their second room. I'm on on the back. This is where the uh the country and western night is going to be occurring tonight. So a bit of line dancing and all sorts going on. Decked out nicely, aren't they?
It's nice to see that they make an effort for the locals with with stuff they do as well. Yeah, any kind of country and western night, bit of line dancing. Be a great atmosphere in here later, I'm sure.
I love I honestly I do love a social club.
Yeah, I think this is a bit of a first.
I can't think of a time when I I have done a cricket club on the uh on the tour so far. Maybe I'm wrong. Someone will correct me, I'm sure, if I am, but here I am.
Connah's Quay Cricket Club.
So, it's got a bar. Apparently, it's a a bar open to the public, and I'm more than happy. It's going on there. There's a cricket match and stuff going on at the moment as well.
A community center opposite.
So, it may well be a first for the crawl. Let's go and see. It's got a It's a sweet little clubhouse. So, it's got a few uh keg beers and stuff. It's got a dartboard. It's got screens.
It's got a nice vibe.
I don't mind doing anything. So, they commented apparently when Eddie put out that we uh I was coming around.
Gave me a thumbs up to say uh come and see us. So, always more than happy to oblige.
Carlsberg and Kronenbourg on that side.
Pool table.
It's got the uh Southampton Middlesbrough playoff game on, but Guinness Stonewall IPA is and Estrella on around this side.
Little cricket club. You know what? If this is the vibe of a cricket club, I might come and do more.
And I mean, beer garden spaces.
Sitting along here on a sunny day, look.
Looking out of that.
Not too shabby, is it? Eddie says best beer garden in Deeside.
Yeah, I wouldn't wouldn't say he's wrong. Lovely little club, once again, that was, wasn't it?
And the next one is another social club.
This one, a Labour Club. Connah's Quay Labour Community Club. Sky Sports and stuff in there as well. So, so I'm going to walk around the front of the road where the front of it is, and there's another pub just down there past the town council office.
So, yeah, plenty to go at around here.
Although, along that road that we've come along, loads of pubs closed down, which is always a bit of a shame to see. So, let's go in this Labour Club.
It's another another decent-sized club.
Uh it's got pool table. It's got plenty of screens for the football and stuff.
Uh and it's got a very pleasant people running it. So, it is a I I I I don't Again, there's there's something about a social club that just fills my heart with joy.
And this is another really, really great atmosphere and a really, really great little club.
Old school, it looks old school. Pool table, as you would expect. There's a dart board over around this corner as well. So, I said, they just bring back memories, happy memories for me, social clubs.
Always a always a bit of happy memories with a place like this.
I get all the uh get all the local info.
You know, when you when you bring a local tour guide, you know all the stuff. So, apparently that Labour Club as well actually used to be owned by good old Humphrey Smith back in the day.
One that he actually uh sold on rather than just closed and left to rot. So, that's good. Not far to walk to the next one, either, about 150-200 yd.
And it's this. This is a flat-roofed sports bar called The Boathouse.
So, uh a bit of a Connah's Quay institution from what I hear.
Been here forever.
So, sports bars are always all right with me. Let's go inside The Boathouse.
They've got a got a decent space, pool table, a nice vibe. It's got a it's got a a a generic tap mix on like everywhere else, but, you know what, it feels like a a proper local space again for and there's even a a mural up on it which actually says what I was about to tell you. So, a local pub for local people, which is all which is all good. So, these are these are, at the end of the day, your bread and butter customers, the ones that keep you going all year round, uh especially at hard times, so not a not a bad little sports bar in the slightest. Hey, something you were saying before?
Dee side loopy juice on a on a on a keg stuff in here, so yeah, pool table over in the corner.
Machines, sports screens galore. [music] And uh yeah, they're very pleasant uh very pleasant chap running the place and uh very pleasant set of locals and things in here as well. Won one of 17 matches. It can't get any worse, can't it, Mick? It can. Mick McCarthy's famous quote.
Good little vibes. Little bit of sad news. Thought we'd uh Eddie said what I'm on putting it in the uh in a video.
Uh Patricio, uh a regular in here and a well-known figure around the area, passed away sadly on Monday, so nice little uh nice little tribute. Going to see his face up all around the town and things now, so rest in peace, sir.
That was that for Connors Quay. Connors Quay done and the next thing just along the road uh is called Shotton. So, the next uh next three, I think it is, are Shotton.
And the first of which for this is this one, Castle Inn. They're calling it Hendy's is what all the uh locals are referring to it as. It says on here car scales.
Who knows? It'll be a uh a first of the day bar in that Wainwright's in the uh the very first part of the first one so far today if they have Carry out your nights, live sports.
Castle Inn. Looks a good one.
It was true. They do have a couple of car scales and Hobgoblins.
Couple of them but they have one, very very good car scale.
One that I I absolutely adore, so that's nice to see.
I guess what I'm going to obviously have. Proper old school pub. Loads of old features, low ceilings, beams, things like that. Nice vibe.
But the best, one of the one of the best, one of the one of the the best car scales you will find. Pool table and screen again.
But a lovely little lovely little sort of maze with pillars and things like that and low ceilings.
So, uh some pretty good-looking cobs uh in there.
It's a decent reasonable reasonable little selection on there. A proper old-school looking little boozer.
They've also got a pretty extensive and excellent beer garden space.
And a burger van parked on the pub on the corner. Yeah, really a really good beer garden space.
Got badminton net and a basketball hoop and all sorts like that to keep the kids entertained, weren't it?
Excellent space to have a wander.
I'll tell you what, I'm uh glad that I'm with people who actually knew how the next one was supposed to be said cuz I definitely would have struggled with it again. But, fortunately, I know exactly what it's called and that would be the Clwyd.
That's how you say it. Proper old-school building and a second Craft Union pub of the day. Yes, Clwyd is apparently how you say that. So, hey, I am still learning and I am learning something new every single day.
So, second Craft Union of the day is the Clwyd. A large, high-ceilinged, proper old-school Craft Union. Again, landlady seems absolutely lovely. The uh the whole vibe in here it feel it feels proper old-school. This is definitely a an old former hotel.
Looks a little bit like something out of Wild West uh in its in its sort of layout and its style maybe, but it looks like sometimes they have cask ale on, but not one on today.
But, you know what?
I I quite like it. Beery tour.
Standard Craft Union style stuff. But, yeah, big high ceilings in here, look.
So, uh it's a good old old old place.
It's been uh reasonably well looked after, I would say.
Proper old-school looking.
Yeah, have a wonder on through. Sorry, gents, thank you.
Have a wonder the So, I got a spare room around this side and a third bar space, I believe, if I'm going the right way.
Will get me through another door and out into this side where there is a pool table and stuff like that.
And here as well.
From an old school Craft Union, we'll go straight down the road towards the station. So, this one's Shotton Station.
And it's time for the Spoons.
And here it's called the Central Hotel.
So, yeah, Shotton Station is literally just up that little alley bit up there.
And that is a proper, fully functioning Wetherspoons hotel, by all accounts. So, the Central Hotel is my 12th stop of the day so far. It is a decent size Spoons. Again, really big high ceilings. Feels like a proper old one that's been here maybe hundreds of years.
Guest ale wise, there's not that many on. I've actually found one from Woodford. So, it's not too not too shabby, but, you know, not not the biggest selection of ales for a pub this size. I would I would have expected them to have a few more on than what they've got. That is what I've gone for, Mad Hatter, a ruby ale.
So, about stout is the other one that I would have would have gone for, but that is literally it for the ales. They're the same on same on both sides. So, not that much choice in the grand scheme of things, really.
But, it's a it's a nice enough looking old place.
And they're clearly an old historic Wetherspoons building now. So, they're well maintaining these old buildings well. I just realized that I haven't updated my list. This is pub number 9,500 so far. So, cheers to that.
500 to go to the big milestone. So, 9,500 ticked off. So, 9,501, an unlucky for some, 13th of the day, this. It's called the Melrose Inn, but there is absolutely no signage up or whatsoever with a name on.
Locally referred to as the Meli.
That's it. A old school, cash only. It's split into two sides. Quite noisy in the other side. The other side has got pool table and stuff in.
No cask, generic taps.
Big screens, darts.
It's It's social club vibes. You'll very much be able to see what I mean by by social club vibes. By the look of it, so the other room's got a pool table and stuff in.
But, there's a '68 European Cup Winners Cup there, which is quite cool.
There you have the Meli. Next one, closest one to there is this bad boy.
And this is one of the most recurring names on the crawl.
The Plough or the Plough Well, the Plough Inn, but the Plough is one of the most recurring names on the crawl for sure. Although, I feel like I haven't actually done one for quite a while.
This looks like it may well be a Marston's to me.
Time will tell. Let's go and find out.
Hey, I'm good at this, am I? It is a Marston's. Of course it is a Marston's.
It looks and feels very much like a Marston's. No cask ale at all. Stone Wall IPA.
Best of a best of a a poor bunch when it comes to Marston's. It's a bit It's It's a family eatery style one. It's split into two sides.
Pool table over there. And looks like they do carvery on a Sunday.
Standard Marston's taps. Says Stone Wall IPA, but nothing at all on the hand pull. Which is a bit of a shame.
Got one of those uh weird grabber machines.
They have lots of things on. DJs, karaoke, things like that. Party drinks, sort of drink deals. Says there's a pool table and stuff thrown there on the bar bit.
And a garden space out to the rear. So, apparently years ago, they had a Ian Van Dahl and uh the Ultrabeat, the ones who did Pretty Green Eyes. Apparently they uh actually played here out in this uh out in this garden space.
So, interesting little fact for you. Next one. So, out of Shotton and to a place called Ewloe, a little village E W L O E.
And next is this, The Running Hare. And yeah, guess what?
It is indeed another Marston's. This is one of those uh purpose-built family eatery style ones that I have done a thousand of already.
Let's make it a thousand one. I mean, it looks the same as every other one of these that I've ever done. Uh it's got carvery carvery on full I I assume full time, I must say 7 days a week, I would imagine.
So, obviously yeah, just it's they just aim at family diners, aren't they? That's what they do.
But that is their uh that is their carvery setup in here.
Few cakes as they are the puddings and things on. I've got a uh I've got a cask ale on, not even more than one.
Pedigree two, three, Pedigree, Hobgoblin, and Wainwright's.
Just a couple of minutes away to the next one. So, filling uh Yolo and the next stop is this. It is the Crown and Liver.
And it is another Marston's pub. Apparently, this is a Michael Owen's favorite pub.
So, I've been told. I mean, there are there are definitely photos that I've seen of Michael Owen here, so you know, could well be. Crown and Liver. I said I mean I've shown you quite a bit of the uh the Marston's ones so far, so they're doing one a a bit quick. Cask on but they were they had their Wainwright's on on uh there. So, pretty standard for Marston's stuff. Nice enough looking little pub, isn't it? But when you've done one Marston's and then you come and do several other Marston's, they'll feel a bit samey. Oh, one thing I will say for it is it has got a decent little outdoor space to the rear, decent garden, so I thought I'd might as well put that in the video for you.
Because it is a useful space out here as well.
So, yeah, they're just a bit I can't there's only so many Marston's pubs I can do uh in a single day. It's usually one.
But that is a that is this one. Next village along is called Hawarden.
But so they tell me but it's spelled like that.
Ha Hawarden, that's how you spell but they're all telling me it's Hawarden so I want to trust them and first of the two pubs here to do this. It's the Fox and Grapes and it's situated right next door like to I sadly lost one called the Bluebell.
So it would have been pretty cool wouldn't it like out of one straight into the other but now it stands alone on this side of the road just here. So it's a beautiful looking little village pub.
Fox and Grapes stop 17 I think for the day.
Timmy Taylor's landlord. First Timmy Taylor's landlord of the day. I really like this isn't it? This is beautiful.
So it's it's lovely for me outside but it's even then better on the inside.
It's a proper looking little village pub. It's dog friendly.
It's got good ale. It's got a really good menu.
And a really good vibe. So I'm a I'm a big big believer. Big fan of this one.
Absolutely. Timmy Taylor's landlord and it looks like they have a a second ale and signs as well.
They'll make sounds like Hollywood have been Hollywood have been happy with that.
Dog friendly. It's got a good outdoor space on the rear again. So we've seen quite a few really good beer gardens and things today.
Big screen out there on a on this bit as well.
But I'm a I'm a I love dogs. Hello sweetheart.
Hello.
I just think this is a this is a proper proper feeling village pub but the menu is exceptional as well.
Food that's coming out looks and smells delightful. This is the the restauranty side space to it and another little bit round here as well.
Sorry brother.
Yeah, really really really good pub.
Feels old. Old beams and stuff in.
Absolutely love that. So, that's from 1958.
Photo of this pub.
Love it when I've got stuff like that up on the walls in here. Yeah, absolutely top notch. Really impressed by this. All right, about 100 yd down the uh down the same road uh and across on the other side then is the other one that is still open in Harden.
And it is the Glynne Arms. And it is a a beauty. Old building, old stonework is absolutely a gorgeous. This one apparently is an independent. Uh the the last one which I thought was a fantastic pub is owned by Punch Taverns.
Which is always a shame, but you know, this is beautiful, that was beautiful.
Loving Harden so far. But yeah, look at the uh little place that we're in. Gorgeous round here. Absolutely gorgeous.
Glynne Arms, stop 18.
Mate, this is another one that I really, really like. This is quirky. It's got a lot of uh a lot of rooms, a lot of corridors, a lot of windy like hidey holes, things like that. And some really good ale. Four cask ales on offer. So, it is it's well worth having a little wander around, so I don't know seize the opportunity to do exactly that. And I'm going to take you with me cuz uh you can see it as well, really. Take you around uh this one end of the pub which is obviously all set up for the dining tonight. Food smells absolutely incredible.
But it's quite the building.
It really is impressive.
And I still haven't walked around any of these other bits yet, so I don't really know where I'm going. So, we'll go back this way cuz it doesn't look like I can get through that way anyway.
We'll head uh back through here and over to where the bar is.
So, four good cask ales, aren't they?
First Quencher from Spitting Feathers is what I've gone for.
And what's that one? Splendid Ale, our Rooster one. And if you come around this side, Wainwright's and Three Tuns Stout.
They've got little quirky rooms as well.
Another one on the side of the bar.
With some little comfy cozy seating and stuff in.
This is beautiful, this. Absolutely beautiful, this boozer.
So, it's got a a good outdoor bit onto it as well.
I'm yeah, I'm really really impressed by all this.
Good beer, guys. That's no surprise with the the quality of the ales and stuff that is on. But, yeah, I think it's an absolutely top-notch gaff. Right, two to go. Village of Mancott is where I am now. And there's only one pub in this village, which is actually this.
White Bear. And again, you know, it's a it's a pretty decent-looking little pub.
So, nice that the village has still got its pub, cuz there are plenty of villages around in the areas that have not got their village pub anymore. So, White Bear in Mancott, still standing, still looks to be doing well. So, that's 19 of the day.
Nice-looking place. It's split into two sides. They've got plenty of plenty of room and plenty of space. This side feels like it should be a dining room. But, I'm not sure they do food.
There's no menus or anything out. But, this side definitely strikes me as what used to be a dining room, anyway.
You get that, don't you?
You see what I mean? It feels Yeah, it feels like a a dining room at the side.
So, looks like they probably haven't got any cask on, cuz they've got Smooth and Wainwright's on on the kegs. So, let's go for the other side. Or, the more bar side with with football on.
Pool table, a jukebox, and all of that going on. So, and now, the end is near. The final pub of the day is going to be this. In the village of Sandycroft.
And it's the Bridge Inn.
Thus named, so cuz you just come across a little bridge, I assume.
And through gates. I don't know which which gates they're talking about.
But it looks like a a little sweet little looks like it might be a Robinson's to me. Who knows? Not a Robinson's pub. Lovely landlady. And another one with an absolutely whopping great big garden. So apparently Sandy Croft used to have four pubs in it. Now this is the only one that survives, which is such a shame. Such a shame for all these villages to have lost so much, but got a good space. This is a this is a nice little back room and stuff that I'm in. And the big garden is not out there now cuz it's the temperature is sort of dropping and and things like that, but it's a lovely old space. Yeah, just take you on one final tour for the day. This is a pretty gorgeous room in here at the back. Out here.
Looks absolutely uh lovely.
And then this is the uh your main bar space as well. So jukebox and things playing.
But final stop for the day on what's been a very enjoyable uh day. Have a good day, mate. Cheers, Eddie. Thanks, brother.
Well, a thoroughly enjoyable day. It's nice sometimes to do the crawls that are more spread out and see a little bit of different stuff in different areas. So I've had a good day.
Uh thank big thanks to Eddie for sorting the day out and for being a sponsor.
So it's been a been an enjoyable one.
That is me done on tour. Tomorrow a craft beer crawl of Nottingham and after New York.
See you later.
