Watch Sunny Hostin on Police Bodycam Video Play the "Harvard" and "TV Star" Card to Help Her Son

[00:00:00]When I first heard that Sunonny Host showed up at the scene of her h son in handcuffs to help him out, I thought, "What is the controversy? I would do this for my child, too. She's behaving like a mama bear." And you're lying if you say you wouldn't show up there to help your child being handcuffed if they called you. Especially if you're a lawyer, uh, like she is, and I am, too.

[00:00:25]I I I don't I do not begrudge her one second trying to help her son out in a tense and potentially scary moment. I do begrudge her dripping sanctimony and hypocrisy.

[00:00:38]No one's above the law and everyone other than Sunny Host is swimming in privilege that she's very pissed off about. She doesn't she doesn't love our country. She feels threatened and unsafe when she sees a neighborhood full of American flags because the country's been just so devastating to her. We made her a multi-millionaire. We funded her mansion in Westchester, which you could probably fit four of your homes in it.

[00:01:07]We'll show you the video yet again so you know what we're talking about. Um, did your child go to Harvard? Most people's kids didn't go to Harvard. Do you think her child got into Harvard completely on merit? Or do you think she might have played the Sunny Host View card to help him along? Not to mention the fact that her son being black is only a bonus to getting into an Ivy League university like that. Everybody knows that. So if there's any privilege, it's the one that she is immersed in day after day after day. But she won't acknowledge any of that. No, it's all about white privilege, which she talks about all the time on that show, and how I guess Trump is evil and his voters are white supremacists. That's her main talking points from the view. Well, what happened is recently her son, who's a Harvard grad, she'd really want you to know, and 24 years old, he's not a 16-year-old, um was running. And apparently he's an avid runner. She's made mention of this many times on the show and decided not to run like you or I would or anybody who's in training for a marathon or for a track team or what have you. on the road, on a track, on a path, in the woods, wherever. I I'm I've lived in Westchester. There tons of beautiful neighborhoods and lovely suburban roads where you could run easily and tons of high schools with unused tracks where you could potentially run in the off hours and tons of wise, you know, YWMCA or YMCA where you could go. Like, there's tons of facilities in Westchester. It's not like Manhattan where there's like Chelsea Pierce and that's all you have. Um, he decided to run on railroad tracks. And I'm sorry to break it to you, Sunny and Gabriel.

[00:03:03]That's the son. That's dangerous. Not just for you, but for riders of the trains. That's why it's criminal. That's why they've criminalized it. You're not allowed to do it. I, Newslash, as a white woman, I'm not allowed to do it either. Okay. Um, it doesn't matter if you went to Harvard or if you didn't go to college at all. The law applies the same. You know why, Sunny? Because no one is above the law. A concept with which you claimed to be familiar when we were talking about Donald Trump. What happened with that? I don't think there's a get out of jail free card if you went to Harvard. I don't think so.

[00:03:43]Pretty sure all all my years practicing law, I never saw that one. You don't have the law doesn't apply to you if you went to Harvard. Geez, the applications would be even more great in number than they are right now if that were the case. No.

[00:03:59]Working class, elite class, Harvard class, you're not allowed to trespass on the railroad tracks because it's dangerous. Not just for you, but for the people riding the trains and the people waiting for the trains and the people who live in the areas. If you don't believe me, here, take a listen to the US Department of Transportation on how long it takes trains to stop. Because while you might think they can stop on a dime if they happen to see somebody running down the track, you're wrong.

[00:04:32]>> An automobile traveling at 55 mph can stop in about 200 ft. A tractor trailer rig at the same speed will take about 300 ft, the length of a football field.

[00:04:43]The average freight [music] train at 55 mph, on the other hand, will need a mile or more to stop. That's 18 football fields. You should know that an oncoming train may be closer and moving [music] faster than it appears. It is easy to misjudge a train speed and distance from the crossing. Because of the train size and your perspective as it comes toward you, it appears to be moving much more slowly than [music] it actually is.

[00:05:11]Railroad tracks, trestles, yards, [music] and equipment are private property. Walking or playing on them is illegal. Trespassers are subject to arrest and [music] fines.

[00:05:26]>> Even if they went to Harvard, here's what happened. He got stopped. He got cuffed. He called his mom. And it all played out on body cam footage.

[00:05:38]Here's her son explaining that his mother is a lawyer. And then you hear Sunonny Host on the phone with him. And listen to the instruction. This is from police body cam footage from June 16th 21.

[00:05:53]>> My mom's a lawyer, by the way.

[00:05:55]>> That's okay. What's your name?

[00:05:57]>> What's your name, sir? Nice to meet you.

[00:05:58]I'm Brian.

[00:05:58]>> Brian, is that your badge number? 2814.

[00:06:00]>> Yes. Yes. So, the reason we're stopping you, this is trespassing right here.

[00:06:03]>> Oh, I'm sorry. The the it was open over there. I was just walking on a run here.

[00:06:06]I'm sorry. I just looked open for me.

[00:06:08]So, I just walked in.

[00:06:09]>> So, this is considered trespassing. It's criminal trespass.

[00:06:12]>> Reason why it's such a big deal, people get hit by a train all the time. We want to prevent it, obviously. Do you have any ID on you?

[00:06:18]>> Uh, yes.

[00:06:19]>> Okay. Do you Where is it?

[00:06:20]>> It's It's in my phone. Uh, if you take off the case, >> tell them your mother is a federal prosecutor.

[00:06:25]>> Yes.

[00:06:26]>> Hey, Mom. How are you? This is Officer Gomez. Your son's final?

[00:06:29]>> Officer Gomez. This is This This is former federal prosecutor.

[00:06:35]>> That's my son. is a Harvard graduate.

[00:06:40]>> Okay. So, before she knows that the police officer is there and hearing everything and holding the phone, she tells him to lie. Tell them your mother's a federal prosecutor. No, you're not. You were once, but you're not. That was a long time ago, Sunny.

[00:06:57]And you shouldn't be advising your child to lie to the police. Then once the officer identifies himself and she knows he can hear her and he's got the phone, she says, "Former, former, right, correct, madam, you're already off on the wrong foot. Don't lie to police to get your son out of a jam. It's the wrong decision." The son says, "I didn't know." You know, he didn't see the sign.

[00:07:24]Okay, that that could be true. Um, I think most of us know you you're not allowed to run in a on the railroad tracks or next to the trains. I I think most of us know that's we don't own that property and it's a dangerous thing to do, but whatever. Um, my beef in this whole video is not with the son, it's with the mother. Um, she shows up to the scene as well. She's in person. Uh, and I believe this next sound bite shows that some of the exchanges on the phone and some of it is in person. Let's watch SA 23.

[00:07:56]>> Let's get my mom on the phone.

[00:07:57]>> Of course. Here, Miss Hass. This officer Gomez.

[00:08:00]>> Hi, Officer Gomez. I'm about 4 minutes away.

[00:08:03]>> Okay, that's fine. So, I just wanted to give you the heads up. So, I am going to be writing your son uh what's called an appearance ticket. I'm sure you know what that is cuz it is criminal trespass where he was. Thank you, >> officer. Is that really necessary? This is a kid that doesn't do anything. He's a Harvard graduate and a Yale researcher. He teaches geometry to >> I I understand that. Why would you put something on his record like this?

[00:08:25]>> No, no, it's it's not it's not even it's not anything criminal. He just has to appear. I'm dumbing it down to a violation. That's all it is. Without due respect, ma'am, I still have a job to do and we have to deter people from being on the tracks.

[00:08:38]>> Indeed, you do because uh trespassing is the leading cause of rail related deaths in the United States. Nationally, more than 500 trespass fatalities occur each year per the US Department of Transportation. More than 500 deaths occur as a result of trespass in and around the railroads and the tracks every year. So, they do have a job to do and it's part of keeping the community safe. Here [snorts] is the son, Gabriel, um asking if the cops can look the other way in S 23.

[00:09:10]>> What happens if you didn't do it? Wait a minute. What happens if you're like, "Oh, we're going to write this."

[00:09:16]>> Well, you know, uh, >> we have cameras everywhere. You know, if if we didn't see you, somebody would have called it over.

[00:09:22]>> Correct.

[00:09:23]>> You know, and >> there was too many trains coming in and out of there to not >> I hate to say it's like my partner said, our hands are tied. It is what it is.

[00:09:30]Listen, >> again, I don't I don't care. That's That doesn't bother me. Have you ever been pulled over while driving your car? I mean, I don't think it's beyond the pale to say, "What if what happens if you don't write me a ticket? Please don't write me a ticket. I was going fast because of X. I mean, everyone's done that. That there's nothing wrong with that. It's the privilege card that people are revoling against. Here she is now on scene in S 24.

[00:10:02]>> Okay.

[00:10:02]>> On a run on a walk and gate was open. I was out.

[00:10:06]>> I see.

[00:10:07]>> Yeah. 47 on the phone with me.

[00:10:12]actually.

[00:10:14]>> I'm a former federal prosecutor. He knows he's a Harvard grad who teaches fourth grade geometry to South Bronx kids.

[00:10:21]>> This is not a kid who's >> in trouble. It's an innocent mistake. I understand you have to violation, but it's >> I think I was walking over there and there's some >> I had a big interview today talking about it.

[00:10:44]Okay, there it is.

[00:10:47]Why'd you mention your big interview today? We all know why. I'm a big star. I'm a former federal prosecutor. My boy went to Harvard. I'm on TV and I had a big interview today.

[00:11:02]Th This is disgusting. This is not normal. This is not something most of us would do. Trust me, I've been pulled over by the cops. I I can speed here or there just like anybody, though I don't make a habit out of it. And it the thought runs through your head. Do I mention in my case, unlike hers, I actually have cops backs on this show. And the thought runs through your head, do I tell him that? Hell no. I would just never play that card. I would never play that card.

[00:11:29]Never. And this is what she does. I'm a former federal prosecutor. I'm one of you. And on top of that, I had a big interview today. We're all talking about it. I'm a star. You know me. I'm a star.

[00:11:44]And my son went to Harvard and now is researching at Yale. We're not the kind of people who commit crimes. That's what she's saying. We're not like those dirty dirt under the nails, filthy workingclass losers who commit crime.

[00:12:02]We're from damn Harvard. Show some respect. It's disgusting.

[00:12:08]I'm on TV. I don't commit crime. I don't raise a son who would commit crime. We go to Harvard. Okay. Stupid dumbass cop who's inconvenienced me and my son. We could buy and sell your whole family, sir. That's what's happening there. It's disgusting. It is disgusting. I I would have had no problem if she had shown up there and said, "Guys, the he's never been in trouble. He's a good kid. Check his record. He didn't understand that this was private property because the the sign is not clear." I would not I I would be defending her. I would be I I would do the same for my child. I'm sure you would for yours as well. But the the Harvard Harvard Harvard, she mentions it at least three times. We we didn't show them all. um and Yale uh and her big interview and former federal prosecutor and all to what? To avoid a citation.

[00:13:07]He's not getting charged with a misdemeanor. Like the stakes are very low. We looked it up. He's facing a possible $500 fine. Did you see the house? Do I need to show you the video again? She can afford it. I'm sure he can afford it, too. This is ridiculous.

[00:13:22]Like, I'm sorry, but I I don't want to hear [snorts] her protestations about no one's above the law anymore as she plays every card she can possibly get her hands on. Former federal prosecutor, I'm on TV with a big interview. Harvard, Harvard, Harvard, Yale, Yale, Yale. No one is above the law. Oh, is that true or isn't it, Madam?

[00:13:45]I I'm It's disgusting. It's That's the reason people are recoiling in response to this. It's not because no one could make the wrong decision about a railroad or railways, etc. It's and it's not because of the sun either. It's because of her and her messaging on the air and the nerve to after non-stop white privilege, no one's above the law to show up to a scene and pull that Shame on you.
