The top-down method is a systematic approach to stock analysis that begins by examining the broader market (such as the S&P 500) to determine its overall trend, then analyzes sector performance to identify which industries are bullish or bearish, and finally drills down to select individual stocks within the strongest sectors. This hierarchical approach helps traders understand market context before making specific investment decisions.

Use My Top Down Method Before Picking StocksAñadido:
One of the things that I teach inside of Power Traders University, which is I teach my students how to do what's called the top-down method, which is where you look at the broader market the S&P 500 and say is it in a bearish or a bullish trend? Then you go to the subsectors and say which sectors are in a bullish or bearish trend, and then you drill down to the individual stocks. Let me show you what I mean. So, when you look at the S&P 500, obviously you can just type the SPX.
You have the S&P 500. But do you know what stocks or what sector is causing the S&P 500 to be up today? Most of the time you don't, but with the power of list or sectors in the list, you can now sort by positive cash flow or just by clicking this change button right here.
So, you can say who's the biggest change positive for the day or who's the biggest change negative.
