Sawyer Brown effectively distills the complexities of social cohesion into a nostalgic tribute to the moral clarity of small-town life. It’s a compelling look at how localized identity serves as a resilient anchor in an increasingly disconnected world.

You Know You’re From a Small Town If…追加:
Hey y'all. Welcome to this week's The Boys and Me podcast where we are talking all things small town.
>> You know what? Hello, Max.
>> Hi, you know, I think we should just do this episode. Just the two of us. Let's just do it. Let's just do it.
>> Wow.
>> You know what? there for a second. He honestly thought, "This is going to work for me."
>> Well, yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Assuming he was listening.
>> This is probably wasn't.
>> This is voluntary.
>> You make me do this.
>> Yeah. You volunte her into this gig.
>> 100%. Okay.
>> Are Are we ready to actually get going?
>> I am.
>> We got to do another podcast.
>> I want to. We're the good fans.
>> I want to do it.
>> Are you ready?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. How are y'all doing?
>> I'm great. I I'm so glad to hear that.
>> What What are we doing today? What's What is this?
>> Oh, what are we doing today? We are doing a small town USA episode >> because you guys have seen a small town or two.
>> Yep.
>> Yep.
>> You sure have.
>> Grew up in one.
>> Yep.
>> Funny you should say that. That's exactly where we're going to start.
>> Wow.
>> Yep. The Apka Boys.
>> Smooth segways >> right here. So, we're going to talk about what it was like to grow up in your small town of Apka, Florida, and what small town life still means to you.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. Okay. What is your most small town memory that you still laugh about?
>> Uh, I mean, we had no sidewalks, plenty of streets that weren't yet paved and >> dirt roads. I lived on a lived on a dirt road.
>> Yeah. And you just go riding your bike, whatever.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> And what was a Friday night like in your town?
>> Oh, goodness gracious.
>> You know, was it like the Friday night lights stereotype?
>> Yeah. Well, >> it could be.
>> The high school football game would be a big deal.
>> Yeah.
>> And then once we had a McDonald's >> Oh, goodness.
>> You know, you'd want to just go right around the parking lot >> and you would cruise.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> To the McDonald's parking lot.
>> Yeah. Well, the lap wasn't quite that big, but Yeah, it was. Yeah.
>> Um, was there a certain local spot that felt like the center of your universe?
The McDonald's.
>> It was McDonald's.
>> McDonald's, probably. Um, and also I mean literally football, even though we didn't necessarily always have great football teams, the whole town supported and we only had one high school field.
>> Yeah. Edwards Field.
>> Yep. Yeah.
>> And was it like the whole town came out?
>> Yeah, pretty much.
>> Yeah.
>> What small town value still shows up in Sawyer Brown?
Oh, I think everything we do, you know, all you >> none of us, every guy in the band is from a small town.
>> So, I just think the way we approach um life and our job, the what we do, >> hard work, the value of community and what that really means. None of us, I think, feel um entitled.
>> Yeah. No.
>> Yeah. At all.
>> Okay. Dovetailing off of that, what do you think small town life taught you about work ethic?
>> It was incredibly important. You saw everybody in that town worked hard at whatever their their gig was. It felt like to me. And I know even when we will be out on the road or whatever and we get tired and we're just, you know, we always just go think, well, all of our friends, most of our friends, our folks all grew up and worked very, very hard.
>> Mhm.
>> And probably weren't quite made the money that we were making.
>> Mhm.
>> And you're going, you know what? You can suck it up. Exactly.
>> You You may be tired, but you can suck it up.
>> And we love playing a small town for those very reasons. It's like I think sometimes, man, if we had ever been able to have a concert in Apka when we were kids, our minds would have been blown.
We wouldn't have been able to believe it.
>> So, we love that. We do. We love that.
>> Love it.
>> We treat that as um as a big a deal >> as playing an arena or stadium.
>> Yeah. Well, I think it was really cool in the documentary that Blake talked about uh Blake Shelton talked about his small town in Oklahoma that you guys came to play and like no one really came to play there and you know what an impact that had on him. Um and so I think that's something that's really cool about y'all's career and what you've been able to do is you have played every map dot.
>> Yeah. Yeah, we have.
>> You do not discriminate.
>> Um now what do big city people misunderstand about small towns in your opinion? that we're dumb >> backward.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I mean, honestly, even growing up, >> you are dumb. But >> you're from a big city.
>> Not everybody in our our hometown was as dumb as I am. Dumb as you are.
>> Yeah. There is that.
>> But we, believe me, people in Orlando and Winter Park when we were kids, I may be different now, >> definitely thought we were the bumpkins.
Mhm.
>> You know, we were the sticks.
>> Yeah.
>> Hey, but guess what? You guys have had two country stars.
>> Three if we count Hobie. Come out of aka >> Right out of Apka. That's right. Yeah.
>> Our buddy John Anderson.
>> Yeah. And >> right around the corner.
>> Yeah.
>> That was a pop. That wasn't Winter Park.
>> That was not Winter Park didn't give us that.
>> Okay. Who was the one person out of like, you know, y'all's friends in the small town that everyone knows. So if you're like, "Oh, I'm from a papa."
They're like, "Oh, do you know so and so?"
>> Greg Hathaway. Yeah.
>> Or Tommy Tomelli.
>> Yeah.
>> Either of those guys. Everybody would know.
>> Yeah. They would definitely know.
>> Not for, >> you know, even some policemen you might stop and ask would know both of those gentlemen. So, >> oh my goodness. Um, what does Apopka still mean to you guys? Now, >> when I hear the word home, that is what I think of. And I haven't lived there now in 46 years, >> but I still think of that place as home.
>> Oh, I get images in my head.
>> Yeah.
>> Of the Spanish moss.
>> Mhm.
>> You know, hanging off the trees.
>> Yeah. I see a little gator floating in the >> in in the the ponds and stuff. Yeah.
>> When we go to play Florida, when I wake up on the bus and I look out the window and see that moss, it is just like I know I'm home.
>> And smell the orange blossoms in that.
She's so great. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Now, what is something about small town life that you miss as time goes by >> now that you live up here in the big city?
>> Well, about our town is because of the growth of Orlando.
>> Mhm.
>> Our little town has kind of been engulfed.
>> Can't tell where Orlando stops anymore.
>> Yeah.
>> We when we were kids, you could feel those 10 miles that were between Apopka and Orlando. There was a big difference.
And you'd roll through stuff where nothing had been built yet.
>> And now it's just one sweeping metropolis.
>> Yeah. There's a lot of our little hometown that's not there anymore.
>> Yeah.
>> But a lot of >> a lot of it that is though. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, they have a Starbucks now.
>> Yeah.
>> So, >> well, our friends when we get to visit with our friends, >> we all go back there.
>> Oh, it's Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Mentally, we're still cruising McDonald's on a Friday night.
Now, we're going to talk about some small town unwritten rules. I'm going to give you guys a classic like small town unwritten rule, and you guys decide whether each one is real or total nonsense. And for this one, >> I am going to give you guys the paddle.
>> Oh, I was thinking it was going to be >> Okay, >> there you go. Mark, >> ready?
>> Yep.
>> First up, if somebody waves at you on a back road, you better wave back.
>> Yes.
>> Okay. I I'm glad you got that right.
>> Man would sooner drive his car into a tree than wave.
>> I He has point blank said that to I feel like that's a lie.
>> No, no, no. Here, but in our hometown.
Yes.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, wow. Wow. Okay. We're playing anybody here.
>> Oh, I know.
>> We know.
>> I know. If a town has one diner that everybody loves, you never publicly say it's overrated.
>> Oh. Oh, >> yeah. Never.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, if the high school football team is good, Friday night plans are already decided for the whole town.
>> Even if they're bad.
>> Even they're bad.
>> We were like 1 and 11.
>> Mhm.
>> And in our senior year and stands were packed still.
>> No one cared.
>> No.
>> Uh, if you're new to town, people know before you do. Oh yeah. Mhm. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Mark, could you slide yours and just It was just starting to cover Madison a little bit.
>> Joel, you need to quit yelling at me, man. Wow. Yeah.
>> Give me my spotlight, father.
>> Yeah.
>> Stop trying to hold me down.
>> Just so you guys know, >> Joel is just wearing me out.
>> Yeah. Sick of that, Joel. We need an episode where it's only Joel and Hunter.
>> Yes.
>> 100%.
>> Yeah.
>> Make it Hunter. Write that episode.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. If there is a local parade, somebody you know is either in it or helping run it.
>> Oh yeah. Or throwing rotten oranges.
>> I mean, depending.
>> Yeah. Floats.
>> Story time.
>> Well, you remember the people we were mentioning earlier.
They enjoyed a good parade for whole different reasons.
>> I'm all of a sudden starting to realize where the love of pranks Yes. was developed.
>> Oh, it started early. Um, if somebody says, "Bless your heart," you need to listen to the tone before you decide if that was nice.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> If the county fair is in town, normal life pauses for a few days.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Oh, yeah. Because >> in every place we play, >> there will be places that we play that you can't get anything to eat. They'll close the like the old main street restaurants because it's >> you only you'll only be able to eat fair food because no restaurants in the town are open.
>> Oh, and sometimes those like church lady fair booths.
>> Yeah.
>> You know.
>> Yeah.
>> Fantastic. Incredible food.
>> Fantastic. You know what we need to bring back? This might be a passion project of mine. Bring back the church cookbook.
>> Right.
>> 100%.
>> Bring it back.
Um, if there is a town festival, somebody's uncle is in charge of the grill.
>> Oh, sure. Yeah, sure.
>> We had a foliage festival that happened every year. That was also a big deal in Apopka.
>> The foliage festival.
>> Foliage festival. Because we're the indoor foliage capital of the world.
>> What does that even mean?
>> Well, it's >> green houses.
>> Green houses. Indoor foliage.
>> Oh, >> miles and miles of green houses.
>> Incredible amount of that. Yeah.
>> Okay. So, you guys had a big festival.
Anybody growing up in Apopka at one time or another? You worked in a greenhouse?
>> Sure did.
>> Okay. Okay. So, Hobie, what greenhouse?
What was your foliage of choice?
>> I worked in ones where you picked podarpus berries. They're there. This tree that >> shrub has podarpus berries and you pick those off and you separate like the the seed part from what looks like a little piece of fruit.
>> Can I ask what does one do with a >> Well, you carpus. Py carpus. It's a big Well, it's bigger than a shrub. I mean, they grow so tall, but yeah.
>> What What do you What do you do with the berry?
>> The berry you just toss.
>> What What do you do with the seed?
>> The seed you plant from carpus.
>> Hey, >> I think you're making that up.
>> I am not that creative to be honest with you. And you know that.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Uh Mark, >> my first job was cleaning or weeding an overgrown greenhouse.
>> Mhm.
>> That had not been tended to for like two years.
And I'm deathly afraid of snakes.
>> And I bet there was a garden snake or two in there.
>> Well, and with in a popka, it could be more than a garden snake.
>> Yeah, >> cuz we'd have water moccasins.
>> Oh, goodness.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, you >> Yeah. How long did you keep that job, Dad?
>> Well, I cleaned out that greenhouse and then I decided maybe that wasn't the life that I wanted to live.
>> That wasn't like >> I knew that at 14.
>> Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wasn't there a story about some guard swans?
>> Oh, yeah. At Yes. Yes. the family I grew up with, the Nelson's, who had um Nelson's Florida Roses, this incredibly huge operation where they sold roses.
And instead of guard dogs, they they had guard geese. Those things were so mean that it was like you didn't go near that place at night because they just turned the geese loose.
>> For some reason, I really thought that those geese were part of him cleaning out the greenhouse.
>> Well, we can blend those together.
Man, those things are mean.
>> They were mean. Yeah.
>> Guard geese.
>> Guard geese.
>> Guard. You know what? I want some guard geese. If the weather gets bad, everybody suddenly becomes a meteorologist.
>> Yes.
>> Yes.
>> Yeah. Oh, for sure.
>> So, because you guys have seen your fair share of small towns in your 40 years of touring, we're going to play a small town superlative game. Okay.
>> Okay. So, I'm going to give you guys a category and you guys tell me what small town that you visited you think gets that superlative. Okay.
>> So, we'll start out easy with best small town for barbecue.
>> Oh, now you boy, you could offend some people on this, but >> that gas station in Corinth, Mississippi >> Yeah.
>> had some of the best barbecue I've ever had in my life and colelaw.
>> Yeah. Well, and we got to get bunions bunions in um in muscle shells.
>> In muscle shells.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> If you had to move to one small town outside of Tennessee or a popka, which one are you picking?
>> I was going to pick a popka. Um >> Zelwood because it's >> There we go. There we go.
>> Close to aka such a workaround.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I might say Astatula just because that's fun to say.
>> Oh my word. Okay. Zelwood, Florida.
>> Yeah. Zelwood. Oh, absolutely.
Absolutely.
>> Had a corn festival.
>> Sure did.
>> All the biggest tasks.
>> Oh, man.
>> Sure did.
>> We played it.
>> Yeah. Best sweet corn in the world.
>> Yeah, >> I know. Um, that is such a workound and I'm very disappointed in both of you.
>> Thank you.
>> Name a small town that feels like a hidden gem that people don't know about.
>> Could we say Missoula, Montana? Is that small?
>> I don't know if they I was thinking about that even when we talked about >> Would you guys consider that a small town?
>> Missoula.
>> Come on. Huh? Somewhere in that area there's there's other little small towns.
>> Oh, I know. Swan Valley, Idaho.
>> Oh, >> Swan Valley, Idaho.
>> Well, there you go.
>> Yeah. Mags for the win.
>> Yep.
>> Yep.
>> Yep.
>> Yep.
>> Uh best small town for a weekend getaway.
>> Oh. Um well, in this area, Gatlinburgg.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> That is not a small town.
>> Yeah, it is. It's tiny.
>> Gatlinburg.
>> Okay. Pigeon. Pigeon Forge.
Gatlinburg's tiny hunter. Look up.
>> Everyone goes to Gatlinburg. Look up the population.
>> It's like saying I like to go to this little place called Disney World.
>> It's only 3600 Genber.
>> There you go. There you go.
>> Thank you.
>> And what's Pigeon? What's Pigeon Forge?
>> Wrong.
>> What's Pigeon Forge?
>> 6,300. A little bigger.
>> See?
>> Wow.
>> See, someone was right.
>> Well, it's only 1300 if you take out the >> But that feels like a workaround.
>> Okay. Well, that feels like you want an alternate.
>> I want an alternate.
>> Um, that is a weekend getaway.
>> Mhm.
>> There's that place in uh Swany >> that or just Swany the people go to cabins?
>> Yes.
>> Yeah.
>> Does Gatlinburgg really only have >> the year round population?
>> The year round population. Wow.
>> Per Google. Yeah.
>> Okay. I'm surprised. I'm surprised Pigeon Forge is that big. Must have gotten bigger since Dolly.
>> Both Both of you apologize to me >> later.
>> I'm going to do Sorry.
>> Oh, sorry.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Name the best small town in America for southern food. There is a correct answer.
>> In Mississippi. Where is that place?
>> That's not the answer.
>> Oh, Laurel.
>> Laurel, Mississippi.
>> Laurel, Mississippi.
>> Yep.
>> Oh, man. I mean, >> yeah, >> the I I could weep thinking about those fried green tomatoes.
>> They were off the charts and everything was good. And it was like, "We're not going to be here long enough to eat all the food I want to eat."
>> You know who is from Laurel, Mississippi?
>> Who?
>> Landon says, >> this the southern Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> The southern Tik Tok personality that we love. He's from Laurel, >> but also they they film that um TV show.
>> They sure do.
>> Um My Hometown or something like that >> in Laurel.
>> I don't know. Yeah, it's HGTV.
>> They There's an HGTV show there, too.
>> Um, name >> I can't stop thinking about that food now.
>> Name a small town in America where you always knew the show was going to be good.
>> Small town.
>> Mhm.
>> Oh, I got it.
>> Where?
>> What?
>> Renro Valley.
>> Oh, well, yeah.
>> Oh, there you go. There you go.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, name a town with the wildest county fair tradition.
>> Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. What was the town that they have? It's out west.
>> The chuck wagon races. Uh >> the No, the the uh jumping on the the wild horse race.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Oh, no. That's at um I've seen that at uh Cheyenne Frontier Days.
>> No, but yeah, there is that. But there is one. Where is um Talent and Tara from?
>> St. Louis Abyspo. Yeah. California.
>> Yeah.
>> And there was one Are you >> talking about Indian relays? where there was no there was one where there was >> like it was typically dads and a kid and um you'd go in as a team to catch a grease pig which I thought was pretty epic.
>> Wait, where is that?
>> I can't remember. You have to forgive me. I'm old. But um yeah, I just remember thinking, "Oh man, that's that rocks."
>> So it's like a family effort.
>> It would be somewhere in Iowa, you know.
>> It's got to be Iowa.
>> Used to have a grease pig contest on on Labor Day. Can your breath?
>> Yeah, >> we used a fat dog.
>> Yeah.
>> Are you serious?
>> No, it was a grease pig.
>> You don't understand. You sometimes used to be a pitbull.
>> Yeah.
>> Labor Day was a big thing in Apopka.
There was a parade. There were fireworks. There was a grease pig. And then the groove killer was you knew, oh, when I go to bed tonight, I got to get up tomorrow and go to school because it was always the start of the school year.
Yeah.
>> But nothing welcomes in a school year like catching a grease pig.
>> Yeah.
>> Can we can we have that contest for Sawyer Brown this year?
>> Grease pig contest.
>> The band.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Oh, 100%.
>> Yeah, >> 100%.
>> Um, name a small town in the US with the coolest local music scene.
>> I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting.
I'm going to go ahead and say muscle shows >> because it Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> per capita.
>> Yes.
>> Everybody plays >> everyone plays something. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I have another one.
>> Uh Grun Hall in Texas.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> I was Yeah. Texas. I'll give you Texas because like some of those towns like you know Luke and there's like no one there but they have these incredible >> Bont Bont Texas >> because >> um Mark Chestnut >> and um >> I think Tracy Bird was from there. Um >> I think Clay was close to there.
>> I think I think you may be right. Yeah.
Yeah. Texas would have a bunch of pockets of that.
>> The population of Bowmont is 112,000.
Well, >> that's small, right?
>> Little bit.
Compared to what, Mark? Compared to New York City. Yeah, that's small. But >> exactly.
>> Oh my word. Okay, we're going to end on this one. I'm going to need y'all to put on your thinking caps.
>> Oh boy.
>> The small town that you think Sawyer Brown has passed through the most in their 40 plus years of touring.
>> Okay. It would be It would be >> pass through. Where was the Midpoint Cafe? What was the actual town?
>> You remember the Point Cafe?
>> I definitely know I've been there, but >> yeah, on Route 66. Yeah, they do have.
Um >> because if we didn't get to stop to eat at the Midpoint Cafe, we certainly drove through it >> a million times.
>> It may have been um >> it was the midpoint of Route 66, right, is the where it got the name. But um >> I love that y'all don't even know like what state it would be in because you just know the route that it was on.
>> Exactly. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. You know what? We'll take it. The Mid Cafe that cheeseburger tastes like.
>> Would it be Adrian, Texas?
>> Adrian, Texas. That's >> okay. The Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, Texas.
>> Thank you, Hunter.
>> Thank you, Hunter. Use your microphone.
>> Adrian, Texas.
>> Okay, we're going to move on.
>> Okay, >> we're going to move on from Adrian, Texas. Small town.
>> Um, we're going to talk about small town songs.
>> Oh, there's some good hall of fame because there are so many good songs about small towns. Yeah.
>> So, you guys have a handy dandy list.
>> And I Okay, so I'm going to give you guys three songs and out of those three, you have to name the one that you think deserves to be in the small town hall.
>> No, this can't this is not fair.
>> So, first up is round one, we have Small Town by John Melanchamp, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, and Sweet Home Alabama by Leonard Skannard. You may only pick one.

>> Oh. Oh, you don't think it qualifies, Mark?
>> I bet you Amarella is bigger than Bowmont, is it?
Come on.
>> How much money you got on it? Just so we know what what's at stake here. You going to buy or anything?
>> Twice. Twice the size of Bant.
>> Thank you.
>> It's a small town vibe song.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.

>> Oh, really?
>> Jay Booker, thank you. Wherever you are, because that is an alltime favorite song of mine.
>> He's from down there, though.

>> Okay.
>> This is going to be a guessing game.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. I'm going to give three clues about a celebrity from a small town. And you guys have to see who can guess it first. And because you've been so good, I'm going to give you the buzzers.
>> Oh, wait. So, we're guessing the celebrity or the town?
>> The celebrity.
>> Okay.
>> All right. Bring it.
>> We're going to start with our first celebrity.
