Greatness Through Serving – Wednesday, May 27, 2026Added:
May the peace of the Lord be with you all as we bring to you the readings of today's Holy Mass.
Let us now listen to the word of God.
May 27th, [music] 2026, Wednesday of the 8th week in ordinary time.
Today is Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, Wednesday of the 8th week in ordinary time.
The church reflects on the cost of redemption and the meaning of true greatness.
In the first letter of Peter, we are reminded that we were redeemed not with perishable things, but with the precious blood of Christ.
Psalm 147 praises God's care and guidance.
In the Gospel according to Mark, Jesus teaches that true greatness is found in service, not power.
The unifying theme is living a life shaped by Christ's sacrifice through humble service.
As we place ourselves in the presence of God [music] and open our hearts to his living word, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Lord our God, you have redeemed [music] us through the precious blood of your son.
Help us to live with gratitude and humility.
Teach us [music] to follow Christ by serving others with love and sincerity.
Remove from our hearts all pride and guide us to seek true greatness in your eyes.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Contextual insight to the [music] first reading.
The first letter of Peter speaks to early Christians about their identity [music] as a redeemed people.
It contrasts worldly values with the enduring truth of God's word.
Redemption through Christ's sacrifice is presented as the foundation of Christian life.
This passage emphasizes transformation and the call to live according to God's truth.
A reading from the first letter of St. Peter.
Knowing that you were redeemed with corruptible things such as gold or silver from your useless behavior received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, an immaculate and undefiled lamb foreknown indeed [music] before the foundation of the world, but made manifest in these latter times for your sake.
Through him you believe in God who raised him up from the dead and gave him glory so that your faith and hope would be in God.
So purify your souls in obedience to the truth, in fraternal charity, and love one another from a simple heart attentively.
For you have been born again, not from corruptible seed, but from incorruptible through the living and abiding word of God.
For all flesh is like grass and all its glory is like the flower of grass.
The grass has withered and its flower has fallen away.
But the word of the Lord remains in eternity.
And this is the word which has been evangelized to you.
The word of the Lord.
Contextual insight to the responsorial psalm.
Psalm 147 praises God for his care, provision, and guidance of his people.
It He a God who is both powerful and attentive to human needs.
The Psalm emphasizes God's word as a source of order and blessing.
It invites gratitude and trust.
Responsorial Psalm.
The response is Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.
Praise your God, O Zion.
For he has strengthened the bars of your gates.
He has blessed your sons within you.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.
He has stationed peace at your borders, and he fills you with the fat of the grain.
He sends forth his word to the earth.
His word runs swiftly.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.
He announces his word to Jacob, his [music] justices judgments to Israel.
He has not done such a thing for every nation, >> [music] >> and he has not made known his judgments to them.
Hallelujah.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem.
Contextual insight to the Gospel.
This Gospel [music] is the heart of the liturgy.
Mark 10 presents Jesus on the way to Jerusalem, where he foretells his passion while the disciples misunderstand his mission.
James and John seek positions of honor, revealing a desire for status.
Jesus responds by redefining greatness through service and sacrifice.
This teaching reveals that true leadership follows the example of Christ.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
The Son of Man came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.
Now they were on the way >> [music] >> ascending to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them.
And they were astonished.
And following they were afraid.
And again [music] taking aside the 12, he began to tell them the things that would happen to him. Behold, we are ascending to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will be handed over to the leaders of the priests [music] and to the scribes and elders.
And they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles.
And they will mock him and spit on [music] him and scourge him and kill him.
And on the third day he will rise again.
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, >> [music] >> drew near to him saying, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask."
But he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"
And they said, [music] "Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory."
But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking.
Are you able to drink the chalice that I drink >> [music] >> or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
But they said to him, "We are able."
Then Jesus said to them, "Indeed, you shall drink the chalice that I drink and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.
But to sit at my right or left is not mine to give to you, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
And the 10 upon hearing this began to be indignant toward James and John.
But Jesus calling them said to them, "You know that those who seem to be leaders of the Gentiles lord it over them >> [music] >> and their superiors exercise authority over them.
But it is not so among you.
Instead, whoever would become greater shall be your minister.
And whoever would be first among you shall be the servant of all.
For the Son of Man also has not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a redemption for many."
The Gospel of the Lord.
Reflection of today's liturgy.
Jesus speaks about his suffering, yet the disciples are focused on positions of honor.
This reveals a tension that still exists in us.
We want to follow Christ, but we also desire recognition, success, and control.
We are drawn to greatness, but we often misunderstand what it truly means.
There is an interior struggle between pride and humility.
Like James and John, we may seek importance or validation.
We may want to be seen, appreciated, or placed above others.
This desire can quietly shape our decisions, even in our spiritual life.
Jesus responds by revealing the heart of the Father.
True greatness is not about being above others, but about serving them.
Whoever would [music] be first among you shall be the servant of all.
This turns our understanding upside down.
Greatness is measured not by power, but by love expressed in service.
The first reading deepens [music] this truth.
We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ.
This means our lives are not our own. We are called to live differently.
Our identity is shaped not [music] by what we achieve, but by what Christ has done for us.
This leads to a call to conversion.
We are invited to examine our motivations.
Do we seek recognition or we willing to serve quietly?
To follow Christ means [music] to let go of the need to be first and to embrace a life of humility.
In daily life, this may mean serving without being noticed, helping others without expecting anything in return, or choosing humility over pride. [music] These are the places where true greatness is formed.
Jesus himself becomes the model.
He does not only teach about service, he lives it fully, even to the point of giving his life. [music] This reveals that love is not passive, but sacrificial.
Because the deeper truth is this, greatness in God's kingdom is not about rising above others, but about lowering ourselves in love.
And when we serve as Christ served, we begin to reflect the very heart of God.
Let's pray.
Lord Jesus, you have shown us that true greatness is found in service.
Help us to follow your example and to live with humility and love.
Remove from our hearts all pride and guide us to serve others with sincerity.
Teach us [music] to give ourselves generously, just as you have given yourself for us.
Jesus, we trust in you.
Amen.
Thank you for praying with a word today TV [music] on this Wednesday of the 8th week in ordinary time.
May we continue to grow in humility and serve others with love each day.
As we go forth called to serve in Christ's love, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
