San Antonio's plan to fix its most neglected neighborhood
Added:A long-neglected community just west of downtown has the highest concentration of homeless people in the entire city.
The San Antonio Housing Trust says if the community works with them, they can turn that community around in the next year or in the few decades. You're taking a look at Cattleman Square, which runs from about UTSA Downtown Campus to Ruiz and Delgado. This is the area near Haven for Hope, the VIA Central Plaza, and the University Health Robert Green Building. It's being called Project DC or District of Cattleman. The Housing Trust has been meeting with businesses, homeowners, and stakeholders in that area for about a year now. This is the beginning, they say, of a long-term plan to give that area some new life.
>> What we are doing is establishing a plan and partnerships to make sure that we are setting a framework for what can happen with this area. But the vision is only as good as the input that we receive, right? This process.
>> They want to be very clear. This is going to take years, if not decades, to create. The San Antonio Housing Trust is a nonprofit created by the San Antonio City Council, but works independently to create affordable housing. The first thing they're going to tackle is finding a home for more than 110 unhoused people that live in the Cattleman's Square district. There's a community meeting that's happening this Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 at Tafolla Middle School.
There's also a meeting happening on Saturday, and there's an online survey that you can take. You can find information right now on ksat.com.
