The video game industry faces significant challenges when developers prioritize personal creative vision over market demand, as demonstrated by Bungie's financial struggles following Sony's $765 million impairment loss on their $3.6 billion acquisition, where the studio's niche extraction shooter Marathon failed to meet retention targets despite a $250 million budget, while Destiny 2 experienced declining player engagement since 2024.

Bungie, Marathon & Destiny Are FINISHED!Added:
Yo, what what is happening? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back once again to another video. Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are watching this video from.
So, guys, Bungie are in serious trouble.
I know I've made multiple videos, but let's just listen to what's happened recently. I know I'm not the first creator to make this video. However, I think I put a unique perspective on it because again, I'm not going to apologize to anybody for my views, and I say exactly what I think. I don't sit on the fence ever. So, based on the most recent financial reports from May 2026, I think this come out like a couple of days ago, Sony has officially revised Bungie's valuation downward by 765 million due to impairment losses. What impairment losses means, guys, is that basically Sony's own valuation of Bungie has dropped by that amount. So, basically, if you subtract, I don't know, write down from the original 3.6 billion purchase price, Bungie is currently valued at approximately 2.8 billion on Sony's books when they're doing all this financial reporting. And obviously, it's quite obvious if you want to kind of have a look at the breakdown of the value drop, two major things. Number one, Destiny 2. The player engagement and revenue have steadily declined since 2024. You can view that yourself online. It's no big secret. And then Marathon, guys, which I've talked about quite a few times, is that despite a massive development budget 250 million, the game was marched, sorry, launched in March, and it's barely got anybody playing, guys.
It's already lost 90% of its player base. So, obviously, its launch has failed to meet sales targets and even maintain a stable audience. Do you really think a game with that kind of a budget is going to continue long-term?
It's crazy, like and you've got to kind of note that these impairment losses actually represent Sony's own admission that Bungie is no longer worth what they originally paid for. You know, it's essentially adjusting the studio's asset value to reflect its actual current earnings potential. So, there's going to be a lot of people who have kind of listened to what I've just said at the beginning there thinking, "Well, I like the game. I like the game. It's the best game ever. I don't know why so many people aren't playing it." I've never said once in my video that if you enjoy Marathon, I'm unhappy for you. You know, ultimately, regardless of the videos I make or anybody else makes on this subject, if you're playing a video game and and you're having fun, you know, just tell everybody to go [ __ ] themselves.
Like, that that is ultimately all that matters. If you like the game, that's fine. All I'm doing is voicing the opinion of a lot of people who are upset, well, so these video game publishers, developers, whatever you want to refer to them as. There's not much difference in between them now. Um, they basically all work for the same publishers. They don't really make their own games anymore. They just work solely for, you know, set or given publishers within the market. Again, the big three publishers, you know, EA, Activision, and Ubisoft. There's not much in between those three um when it comes to, you know, these big AAA live service slot video games. And and and that's what they are. I think that Remember years ago when we used to complain about supply drops and, you know, map packs costing too much? I think anybody and their dog right now would give their left testicle or left breast if you're a female to actually have the old-fashioned microtransactions in video games and map packs because it's got that bad now. Fear of missing out mechanics, live service business models on a AAA 70-lb video game in some cases.
Yet, you get basically an empty shell on release and then you're expected to pay for further expansions and updates um to actually get the game to where it needs to be. Even though I enjoyed Diablo 4, guys, the business model for this game is toxic as [ __ ] Diablo 4 should have been released how it is now with the amount of content it's got now. I do like Diablo 4 what it's in its state right now, but you've ended up paying over £200 if you've got all the updates for a game what should have cost 50 quid and it should have had all this content in to begin with. But the problem with Marathon is and a lot of video games of late, there's lots of politics guys going on in the back. I'll try to find this tweet what somebody said earlier.
I'll put this up on screen guys just so you know what I'm referencing. But this guy says on Twitter that keep stuffing your games with ugly women, turning characters gay out of nowhere, and adding a bunch of effeminate looking men into your shooters. It's working out really well. And this isn't just something what Bungie does. A lot of game developers do this. Like you cannot have a woman or should I say an attractive woman in a video game anymore if it's made by Western developers. If you look at the games made from the very very political Westernized developers and compare that to the opposite side of the world like the Far Eastern studios, it's night and day guys. It's night and day and they wonder why these games do [ __ ] It's pretty straightforward why they do [ __ ] And again the problem is they don't even listen to feedback. Like look at Hi-Rez God. Hi-Rez God's the best example I've ever seen of a video game studio just doing the most stupid design choices when it comes to a game.
They brought out their video game based on what they wanted to play not what the community wanted to play. And most of the marketing for Hi-Rez God was from the makers of Titanfall. So everybody gets excited thinking wow, we're going to get Titanfall cuz a lot of people want that game to come back because it's not the usual live service slot what we've had previously. It's not a a [ __ ] hero shooter or any [ __ ] like that what we get all the time. And then they come out with [ __ ] Hi-Rez God.
When Once we saw the gameplay we thought what the hell is this trash? And that was the problem. And again they were so defensive on social media like you know, again they've all been in their echo chamber. They've all got yes men and yes women around them just saying, "Oh, great game, guys. Great game. I love this. I love that." They've got loads of, you know, puppets, what we call, you know, corporate shills from YouTube and Twitch going, "Oh, this is a great game, guys. It's going to be one of the best games ever." They do not listen to the average casual gamer, and that's where it's all gone wrong for them. If they would have come out and made a Titanfall-like video game, again, they can't use the brand Titanfall, you know, they can't name it that specifically as a game. Again, they can use that in marketing like they did for IGN where the makers of Titanfall 2, but if they would have made a game similar to Titanfall 2, they would have made a lot of money.
They would. They would have made a lot of money cuz we don't get games like that anymore. So, because there's not much competition in the market, make a game like that and you'll actually get people playing your video game. It's not rocket science. Like, some of these smaller double-A developers, as I'm going to call them, I don't think they're quite indie level. I don't think they're that small, but they're not nowhere near triple-A. So, a double-A developer, for argument's sake, could easily make a game like, I don't know, one of the older Battlefield games, one of the older Call of Duty games, what we don't get anymore now, and they'd actually make a lot of money. A lot of these video game developers gaslight the community for not liking a game what they've made for themselves instead of making a game for their actual customers. You know, you're designing a video game where there's a demand in the market for people to play.
You're not designing a video game you want to play. You're designing a video game what other people want to play, and that's the problem with Marathon.
They've got carried away with it.
For some reason, Bungie, sorry, for some reason, Sony thought it was a good idea to spend billions, you know, on Bungie when their most recent game is a niche of a niche when it comes to Marathon cuz again, it's an extraction shooter, which is a niche. But then, you've also got the art design, which makes it even more of a niche video game. On the spin of that, they've got one of the most casual, you know, beloved games of the last, I don't know, 10 years or so with Destiny, and they've just stopped supporting it. And then, I know they've made bad choices over the years with Destiny when it's come to lore and things like that. Like the guy said earlier, just, you know, making people ugly, you know, turning people gay overnight, even though nobody cares about, you know, somebody's sexual orientation in a video game. And if you do care about somebody's sexual orientation in a video game, I'm going to say it right now, that's [ __ ] weird. So, let me know what you think, guys, as you always do, in the comment section. Thank you for watching. Enjoy your weekend. And again, thank you for your support, guys. Really appreciate it. Yeah, it's it's it's tough on YouTube when you're as outspoken as what I am. But ultimately, that's what I'm always going to be, guys. Outspoken. I speak my mind. Even And again, this does happen sometimes. Even sometimes me and subscribers don't agree with what I'm saying, but they still support me because they know they're getting exactly what I think. So, if you enjoy that type of content, guys, subscribe, leave a like, and yeah, just let me know your thoughts about Bungie and the whole situation when it comes to them paying stupid amounts of money when it comes to, yeah, Sony buying Bungie. All right, love you all, guys. Take it easy. Goodbye for now, my friends.
