This analysis brilliantly deconstructs the "underdog" pivot used by disgraced creators to weaponize audience psychology and platform migration. It reveals the uncomfortable truth that internet infamy is often just a rebranding away from renewed influence.

THE MOST DISGUSTING INFLUENCER OF ALL TIME...Añadido:
I'm sure they do, sweetheart. I'm sure they do. You know what else would help you? Getting another job. People lose their jobs every day. And you're white, pretty, and able-bodied. Why would I help you, >> bro? This is a really disturbed individual. I'm >> not helping you. I'm not helping you.
All you did was lost your job. Okay.
Welcome to the real world.
>> You like read between the lines. There are some people who are suffering. There are people dying. Kim, welcome to the real world. He went to Coachella on a private jet.
>> I stand behind what I said. 10 toes down. The reason I made that video yesterday though was a lot of people these days do not have the make it work mentality.
>> I think the name James Charles is a familiar name to all of us with him being one of the first male makeup vloggers who went viral back in 2016 to 2019. But his career has not been clean and he's been connected to dozens of controversies from the Totty Westbrook drama to connecting with different minors and now with new problematic actions popping up. It makes me want to ask how is James Charles still a content creator? How is he still actively selling products and making content? No, seriously, how does he still have followers? It is so bad, you guys. I still don't understand. Who is watching his videos? And how is somebody that has done so many horrific things still getting millions of views? In this video, I'll be exploring James' rise, all of the controversies he's been connected to, and how someone as disgusting as James can still live as a millionaire, get brand deals, and do collabs. And if you guys haven't already, make sure you like the video and subscribe down below. And if you want to join my exclusive Patreon community, it is $5. The link is down below. We just did a huge deep dive on lip combos. You guys don't want to miss that. Now, let's get into it. Back in 2018, James was basically one of the only male beauty vloggers in the YouTube space. People loved him for his personality, how funny he was, and for the classic late 2010s glam looks. He was doing collabs with famous YouTubers like Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson, appearing on Ellen, and securing deals that would then catapult him to becoming a millionaire. But like every single big YouTuber of the 2010s, he was not free from controversy. Back in 2017, James was already showing signs that he was already pretty problematic. And this started about 9 years ago. What is he still doing here? Let's make him go extinct. He was making racist tweets about Ebola. He was overpricing his tickets for his tours, which seemed to be some sort of like monkey show where he's bouncing around singing some sort of, I don't know, cover of Adele. and then saying things like influencer rep like he was part of some sort of like marginalized community. All of these things kind of made him a very polarizing individual. People kind of love or hated him.
>> But the real drama really started with Totty Westbrook. At the time when you clicked on YouTube and saw the buy sister video on your recommended page, you would have been floored. Like this was piping hot tea in its time, ladies and gentlemen. And everybody wanted to know how YouTube's golden boy, James Charles, was affiliated with any of it.
Well, Totti was another makeup artist and beauty guru on social media, who had previously collabed with James Charles in the past. But this all changed when in Coachella 2019, James posted a photo on Instagram promoting Sugar Bear Hair, a direct competitor to Totti Westbrook's hair vitamin called Halo Beauty. Tati said that she confronted him over text and their conversation did not go the way that she had hoped. at the time she saw that James was giving statements to YouTube drama channels about the hair care vitamin situation which prompted her to share the video. Tati also said that she was very uncomfortable by a lot of James' actions saying that he would often use his fame to coersse straight men into doing things with him fill in the blank doing things. She also said that James lied about details regarding the sponsored hair vitamin post. And like I mean at the time this was like the craziest tea you could have possibly imagined. I was on the edge of my seat.
I've loved Totty since I was like 14 years old, so you know, I was a ride or die. But I'm not going to lie, looking back at that video, you can see that Totty was clearly in the wrong there.
Like, it's as if she was throwing every little bit of dirt she had on James at the wall, hoping that it would stick and that people would just turn against him.
It also made everybody a little bit suspicious that she would only choose to cancel James after he would promote her competitor hair vitamin brand. Like, it couldn't get more YouTube influencer rabbit hole than this situation. What?
Like if he hadn't done that, she would have kept all of the things about how he coerces straight guys a secret. Like she would have never brought that up. But Totty's awful video was completely overshadowed by James' response.
Apparently it was titled Totty. I haven't seen that video in a very long time. But apparently it was so bad and so unserious to the point where he had so many hate comments he had to delete it. At this time tensions were rising.
Everyone in the community was beginning to blame James even though the Tatia allegations were lackluster at best.
That's when James went ahead and released a video called No More Lies. In it, he attempted to clear the air, saying that Tati's allegations really hurt his feelings. He went ahead and apologized for promoting her competitor's product, which I mean, like, unless you sign some sort of legal agreement, of course, it's not a cool thing to do to a friend, it would kind of be a given that if my best friend had some sort of a brand, I probably wouldn't partner with her team's product. But also, was there legal paperwork saying that he couldn't? I don't know, but it seems a little bit of a stretch. James also went ahead and addressed Tat's claims about his alleged behavior, saying, "I have never and will never use my fame, money, or my power to manipulate or get any actions from a guy that is disgusting." This video was very wellreceived, and things continue to go James' way when big celebrities like Jeffree Star were revealed to be making false accusations about James and also insulting him via Instagram DMs. Now, this entire story has shifted. We went from seeing James as a horrible villain to now everybody believing that he could be a victim and this ended up doing wonders for James' reputation. Jeffree Star would post his own video never doing this again saying he regretted making the hurtful comments towards James. Totty also went ahead and uploaded a second video called Why I Did It asking for all the hate against James to stop. Now I know what you're thinking. Okay, Leil, so what? Like you just briefed us on like some of the weirdest tea from 9 years ago. That story is so old news. It literally happened in 2019. who cares? And sure, that's true. But at this time, this was one of the first times any social media personality was cancelled online for their actions. James Charles basically paved the way for modern cancel culture.
And by the end of it, he was proven not guilty, and that really changed the way that people started to look at him. He lost millions of subs at the beginning of this controversy, but then skyrocketed millions more afterwards. He was the underdog who had false allegations piled against him, who was bullied by some of the biggest creators on YouTube, and yet he still won. So, as the years followed, James grew more and more. His viewers loved him. They became even more loyal after the whole Totty thing. But what I also find very interesting is all of the controversy that happened before the Totty thing, like these horrific Ebola comments, people just simply forgot about it.
Swept under the rug like it never happened before. It was like every single tweet that he made was slightly offensive. And then after the Tati drama, it all disappeared. And of course, you guys know there's a reason why this happens, by the way. It's something called narrative identity.
This is an internalized story that your brain uses to understand yourself and the people around you, and it can change the way that you understand others. With James, his narrative identity that the internet created for him before the Totty situation was largely made up of hate. He was positioned as a spoiled, rich influencer who always said offensive things. But after Tati, this narrative completely shifted. He turned somehow into this poor underdog that constantly gets bullied. And once that narrative shifts, the old narrative gets pushed out. And there are ways that this can be both good and bad. And for James, it wouldn't be long for him to be suffering from the negative end of narrative identity. Fast forward a couple years, now it's 2021. But in February, James was accused by one teenager of G, which James denies, saying that he flirted with the boy because he believed that he was 18 years old. And this honestly was one of the greatest mistakes that James could have ever made. He was saying that he was only messaging that kid because he misunderstood his age. Only for him to post another response video saying, "Holding myself accountable," where he completely contradicts the story. He says there were two incidents, one last year and one more recently where he came to be aware that the person that he was exchanging messages with was underage.
He also publicly apologized to the boys and said he would take time away from posting on social media to educate himself about these issues. This is where everyone's trust in him vanished.
the narrative identity that he was building for himself completely crumbled. And when he doubled down and completely changed the story right in front of our eyes, basically lying, that was completely unforgivable to his audience. It got so bad that YouTube demonetized his channel and the beauty brand Morphe, which James worked with in the past, severed ties with him. This just added more fuel to the fire and the allegations went from just petty drama to having lasting consequences on James' career. And once again, James' narrative identity has shifted. He was no longer seen as the underdog. He was the rich and famous celeb that could and control minors and a liar who changed the story just to make it seem like he didn't know their ages too. From here, James was never really able to fix things the way that he did with the Totty controversy.
Now, every single time you think the name James Charles, you think of a group. And yet, he still wasn't deplatformed. His videos still rad in a pretty good number of views. He's been doing extraordinarily well on Tik Tok and he still manages to have tons of brand deals. So, what's up? How does James Charles still have a career after everything he's done and continues to do? There are many reasons why James seems to get away with everything. And I don't think that there's one single way that he avoids completely getting deplatformed. Still, his move onto Tik Tok was probably his biggest one. I think a big part of it is he migrated to Tik Tok and built a new audience that wasn't around for his initial scandals.
Yes, by catering to an audience that are similar in age to his victims. Bingo. We will be hearing about another minor eventually. Tik Tok is an algorithm that works for individuals with very low attention spans and kids who genuinely don't know who James Charles is or where he even came from. And once they kind of do, they just simply ignore it. I think it's upsetting to us because we grew up with these original content beauty creators on YouTube before Tik Tok was even a thing. We experienced him before we knew about what he does. Then we experienced the downfall, disappointment, and anger of what he did. Our generations that grew up watching him decided almost collectively to stop watching and supporting him. I know I was absolutely in that boat as well. It was just eventually you get to a point where enough things come up that you believe you simply cannot trust that person. And it got to a point where I felt he had very very bad intentions.
And going as far as to even watching a video, one singular view on that channel meant that I was supporting somebody that I do not support. The problem is Tik Tok moving platforms that also specialize in short form content. No more long talks about life or anything like that. So, it made him just appear to younger folks as any other beauty content creator. The younger generations weren't even on the internet when this was all happening. It just doesn't make sense though because if you heard someone has gone after minors, wouldn't anyone of any age bracket go, "Yeah, let's stop watching this man." And the way that Tik Tok works actively promotes this type of audience. Unlike YouTube, the way Tik Tok gets views is by plastering a video on your for you page.
You don't even have to click, you just have to keep watching. James Charles is very good at keeping people watching. I mean, how else do you think he got 25 million subscribers? And he's banking on the fact that the younger and newer generation isn't actually familiar with him. And the truth is that nobody's really going to stop him. He's already a millionaire. That wealth is not going to vanish overnight. Even if the internet chooses to disown him, the most he'll probably do is just lay low and come back in a couple years like he has done many times. But what disgusts me the most is the fact that he has always been problematic. People literally just tried to ignore it, which is what shot him to unbreakable heights. Ever since 2017, he's always been acting like an awful human being. He was kind of one of the creators that you could feel through the screen was not genuine, was not kind, not a girlfriend that you were like, "Oh, I could sit there with her and chat it up and we could be besties." The way I I've always felt about Totty Westbrook. I I never ever felt that from him. I never felt he really cared to be there. I never felt that he was that passionate. What I felt is that he was here for money and he was here to get what he wants. Still, people kept forgiving him. People kept siding with him. Like, if somebody's casually out here making racist comments and contacting children, I genuinely don't believe that they deserve a platform whatsoever. End of story. Now, because of us, because of his diehard fans, because of the people that fell for his narrative identity, he has gotten so big and famous that nothing can drag him down anymore. I mean, just look at the heinous stuff that he continues to do.
The James Charles current drama. I've never been a fan of James Charles, but I follow Kayla Malik on TikTok, and she went through some of the most terrible abuse by the hands of a man named Evan Johnson. There was information leaked that James Charles was housing Evan, sleeping with him, bailed him out of jail while being fully aware of the abuse. It's wild and so sad it's taking away from what poor Kayla went through and how brave she was to come forward and press charges. He was officially arrested today. Evan, I'm just curious if anybody else is following. James posted a 10-minute response video today.
I kept up with all of the Kayla Malik updates. I watched all of her videos.
Kayla was originally friends with James through making different types of content and Kayla even believed that they were friends. Throughout the controversy, he had made multiple passes at her boyfriend while they were in a relationship, her and this Evan guy. And almost immediately after she has the courage to break up with somebody that was completely using her, he then decided to sleep with Evan and house him at his place in LA. And we're talking this is a guy that nearly Kayla like literally like she's so lucky to be here. But we still for some reason have randos on the internet defending him because he's funny. Girl, how does he still have fans? You'd be surprised. I randomly get recommended his reels from Painted and the comments are all supportive. There was also that whole thing of people reviewing the Kardashian Chromebook cookies. People were commenting on his review video saying stuff like, "I'm tired of people pretending like James Charles isn't funny." With tens of thousands of likes.
People defend him so much. so much that it can literally ruin their lives. I mean, that's it's what happened to Kayla. I'm pretty sure James Charles literally bailed her crazy ex-boyfriend out of jail. I mean, we have to understand that Kayla went ahead and chose to work with James in content. So, she chose to work with a and obviously he's a very awful person. And look what happens. Like, he stabs her in the back.
It's just a classic example when you go ahead and you ignore the signs. you see somebody who's a terrible person and you decide to make content with them because it's good for your brand or maybe because you want some clout or you need some clicks or followers. Why is nobody talking about the fact that Kayla chose to collab with him and keep in touch with him despite him having all of these previous issues? Obviously, that doesn't take away from any of the stuff that she's going through at all with her ex and I'm so happy she got justice. But why are we forgetting that she also chose to ignore his previous issues?
James even spoke with Kayla before all of this. She had come clean and said multiple things about how there was a lot of messed up stuff going on in her relationship and all he could say is, "Can I have him?" Can you imagine texting a friend that you broke up with your boyfriend and their immediate response is, "Can I have him now?"
Absolutely batshit crazy. And this is not even mentioning the current airline drama that he's associated with right now. Which when this all came up, I was like, why are we surprised? Why are we even listening? Why are we even allowing him to speak?
>> I just got a DM on here from a girl that said, "Good morning, James. I know you'll probably never see this, but if you could just take one minute to read, it would really mean a lot to me. I'm really struggling right now because Spirit Airlines just filed for bankruptcy and I have lost my job.
Here's a GoFundMe link. Any donations help.
Now, when we watch this first clip, what is wrong with this story? Spirit Airlines has now filed for bankruptcy and she has lost her job and she doesn't have an income. Maybe she's taking care of her family. This is a real reality for a lot of people across the world.
People that lose their jobs, people that don't have enough right now. She's simply sending him a GoFundMe. These are people who do have a lot of money, who flaunt their wealth on social media. I personally would never send anybody a link to pay me anything, but also because I'm not hurting for money. If I was in a terrible place right now, who knows what I'd be doing. This girl might need to feed her family. she might be really really desperate and just going, "Hey, maybe by a stroke of luck, he might sympathize with the fact that I'm going through a struggle and maybe he has money to donate because he was making an entire series about trying to pick the right car and buying the right Tesla." It's like, you're clearly not afraid to show off that you have so much. And when you have a level of excess, why wouldn't people come to you and say, "Would you be willing to donate?"
>> I'm sure they do, sweetheart. I'm sure they do. You know what else would help you? getting another job. Yeah, try that. Because in the time that it took you to copy and paste the same ass message to myself, who you don't follow by the way, and probably a hundred other influencers and celebrities, you could have applied for 100 other jobs, but you didn't cuz you're a lazy piece of and you're entitled and you think that influencers and celebrities should find >> Bro, she literally just said she lost her job. Like, you don't know anything about this individual. I think there is nothing wrong with seeing a message and if you don't feel comfortable donating to somebody that you don't know like swiping away but this he he literally is using it as content to absolutely on this woman who's lost her job saying well then go people are struggling to have jobs people are struggling to even get jobs what are we even talking about >> and you think that influencers and celebrities should fund your life for you why why would I ever help you not a fan you don't even follow me you've never supported me this is your first time DMing and you think that I'm gonna f send you money because you lost your job. Oh my god. Welcome to the real world, sweetheart. People lose their jobs every day. And you're white, pretty, and able-bodied. You're in a much better position than a lot of other people out here who are trying clearly much harder to make a better life for themselves. Why would Iing help you?
Aside, >> bro. This is a really disturbed individual. This is a really disturbed video. I don't know what he thought he was going to get out of this video. It's like target audience, bro. Who do you think is watching your content?
individuals who work 9 to5s, minimum wage jobs. Like maybe there's a chance he has a couple celeb followers. Who who is your main demographic that you make content for? And you're going to be saying these things that who is going to agree with you?
>> Aside from that, 17,000 people lost their jobs airlines. Why do you think you need the GoFundMe? I can at least like 1% respect the mentality of closed mouths, don't get fed. Doesn't hurt to try. But honestly, it does hurt to try because now you pissed me off. Okay, I'm not the one. Go find Mr. Reese. This is literally his entire shtick. I'm sure the next YouTube video is literally going to be like, "I REHIRED ALL 17,000 OF THE SPIRIT AIRLINES EMPLOYEES and it's GOING TO BE THE REAL LIFE HUNGER GAMES. THE LAST ONE OF THEM TO leave the Spirit Airlines plane gets to be the CEO of the new company and gets a house AND A CAR AND $10 MILLION THAT EVERYBODY ELSE DIES." LIKE, GO FIND THAT VIDEO to compete in, baby. I'm not helping you.
I'm noting helping you. All you did was lost your job. Okay? Welcome to the real world. I could at least understand if you were like, "James, I'm a longtime fan. Here's a trillion years of DMs and and my support for you. I love you. I'm suffering with a really rare genetic disease that there is.
>> He's just it's all the comments. Right point, wrong choice of words. He has a point, but he didn't have to take it far. I understand that like you don't have to ask anybody for money, but the response just is so telling of him. Like what a sour and angry and unhappy individual he is. Oh, this is so much worse than I thought. But don't influencers copy and paste the same messages to big brands wanting money and calling it a brand deal.
>> Maybe I would help because I I love you and I appreciate you. This you lost your job. Oh.
Oh. Oh. What are we GOING TO DO?
NOTHING. I'M GOING TO DO NOTHING. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO? GO FIND a new one. Girl, put some effort into the workplace.
>> I think he's just so out to lunch and not even really there. He's literally in a robe midday at a desk. Like like do you know what I'm saying? Like he he doesn't know what it's like anymore. And it's just so he's he can't like read between the lines. There are some people who are suffering. There are people dying. Kim, >> I stand behind what I said. 10 toes down. The reason I made that video yesterday though was a lot of people these days do not have the make it work mentality. They have no desire to actually put in the effort to try to fix a problem and get themselves out of a situation. After James Charles deleted this viral video of a Spirit Airline employee who lost her job asking for him for money, he made this follow-up part two video the next morning, which he also apparently just deleted. If you haven't seen it, here it is in its entirety.
>> I ended up deleting the video that I posted yesterday talking about people who sent me GoFundMe links that have never followed, supported, DM me before, just begging for money. And most people were like enjoying the video, saying it was a valid point. But it definitely started causing some discourse in the comments. And a lot of people were just saying it was out of touch and insensitive. And they're right. It was definitely a harsh choice of words, maybe not my best video, and I deleted it. But of course, the internet is forever. And now a lot of content creators are using like the 5-second clip in the very beginning where I'm like, "You're a lazy piece of Get a new job to upload their cute little thing pieces being like, influencers are all so out of touch. This is so disgusting. You don't know.
>> Out of touch, bro. You're in bed midday.
Like, there are people who are up at 4:30 in the morning, like blue collar, like my father. Like, my dad is 65. He's still He's still on the pipes. He's still He's still working really hard.
What are you doing? You know what I mean? You make disgusting comments and you don't have any repercussions. They don't affect you at all. You do disgusting things and nobody cares. And you're saying, "Get another job." When was the last time you worked for anything? Everybody has completely forgiven you for everything that you've done. And now you're sitting here getting angry at somebody who's probably in desperate need of help. And instead of maybe scrolling away, you used it to just be a despicable individual asking for help like asking people to like and subscribe. Do you know what I'm saying?
I do it every single time. Like and subscribe. Like this. Have a little compassion. I stand by it. He deletes both videos. Yeah, cuz he doesn't. Yeah, cuz it was very distasteful. It's so hard in the job market these days. Give me an effing break. Do you know how blessed you are? This is somebody who does not understand how lucky they are and how grateful they should be for their life. This is dis like truly disgusting to me. And what the f does he know about the work mentality? All he does is make videos and makeup products.
Like what the hell is real life? He says from his bed. I'm sure he would have helped him if it was an underage boy.
Exactly.
>> I am out of touch first and foremost.
Okay. I am never going to be one of those influencers that gets online and pretends to be poor so I can come across as relatable to my audience. I think it's tacky. I think it's annoying. And I also think it's quite insulting to the audience watching as if you guys are going to be fooled into thinking that.
You've been watching me for 10 years now. It's no secret that I have been able to find success doing what I've done. It didn't start that way, though.
I started from literally nothing and had a dream for myself and was determined to literally do anything to make it happen.
And luckily, I've been blessed to be able to do that and now call this my full-time job. The reason I made that video yesterday, though, was a lot of people these days do not have the make it work mentality. They have no desire to actually put in the effort to try to fix a problem and get themselves out of a situation. They immediately result in asking for help. And don't get >> How does he know the work mentality when he's never worked a job in his life? I'm pretty sure he started YouTube when he was like 17 and his mom was like helping to support him or something. Besties, let's call it for what it is.
Influencing and social media is not hard. It is hard to get to a certain place where you're able to make an income off of it. There is a level of a grind, but this is no harder than anybody else's job. That this is this is no hustle more than what my dad is doing waking up at 4:30 in the morning and going to a job for 12 hours. It is absolutely not the same. If anything, it is significantly easier and we are so blessed to be able to do this. Isn't he a PDF file? Yeah. Yeah. He can rot.
Anyone who supports him can, too. So, all he did after somebody asked for help was just get online and mock them to his millions of followers. So now this girl's lost her job. Uh she got laid off because Spirit Airlines went bankrupt and now she's getting made fun of to millions of people. This video was received so bad obviously that he's lost thousands of followers on Tik Tok and YouTube which just proves that his scheme of jumping from platform to platform is literally going to fail eventually. He really is this tonedeaf.
By the way, if there's anything that I want you to take away from this is disgusting individuals should not have a platform. Like he should be removed. And this very telling video popped up where he literally is only going to help people if he's pressured into it. So after James Charles publicly humiliated and cussed out that poor lady who lost her job, his PR team finally advised him to make a donation. And guess how much he donated? A measily $500. If that ain't the most here, damn kind of situation, I don't know what is. I've donated more than that to the people of Palestine and I'm a broke $500 to James is pocket change. He literally lives in a $7 million mansion and has a net worth of $22 million. If I had that kind of money, I'd turn into Mother Teresa. Could have easily cleared that lady's GoFundMe. But unfortunately for her, she's not a 16-year-old boy, so he doesn't really care. You think influencers and celebrities should fund your life as if we don't fund theirs?
Absolutely, bro. Like, do do us all a favor. If there's somebody you don't like, even if it's me, go ahead and just block because the thing is his stuff will keep popping up. It'll keep showing up. His disgusting behavior will continue. It has to be put to rest.
>> Do not have the make it work mentality.
Welcome to the real world. It's >> the real world, he says while posting shirtless from his bed in the middle of the day. But hey sisters, who doesn't want career advice from somebody whose job experience includes charging $500 for selfies and working part-time at a fro yo shop like 10 years ago? And of course, the James Charles apology machine is already in full effect because this guy basically has a PhD in backtracking.
>> Hi all, James here. James Charles here and today I'm going to be making a very important video. People always say that being a social media influencer is an easy job. If you are a fan of an ultra-wealthy influencer, I am begging you to wake up and gain some class consciousness.
>> How is he still famous? No, like how how is he still famous? Guys, let's let's do our thing. Like if you never followed him, pop off. James has always been shallow. We allow ourselves to turn the other way and ignore all of the messed up stuff that James has done, but he will continue to do it. And yes, James really is as disgusting as you think.
The important thing is that we stop allowing genuinely horrific people to get to the level that he's gotten to.
Thank you guys so much for watching. If you enjoyed it, throw it a big fat thumbs up and also subscribe down below if you're not already. And if you enjoyed this video, you can go ahead and click this playlist right here because I know you will absolutely love it. I hope you have an amazing day or night or whenever you're watching and I will see you very soon. Bye, guys.
