In professional basketball leagues like the WNBA, teams make roster decisions based on player performance, team needs, and strategic considerations rather than solely on individual statistics; when the Connecticut Sun waived Hayley Van Lith despite her solid season performance (averaging 8 points per game with nearly 50% shooting efficiency), it demonstrates that roster moves involve complex trade-offs between player value, team chemistry, and future planning, and that even good players may be waived if they don't fit the team's specific needs or if other players are prioritized.

The Sun Just WAIVED Hailey Van Lith...Added:
So, yeah, this was a shock.
Hayley Van Lith has been waived by the Connecticut Sun.
In terms of like like-for-like, it um pretty much means um that they gain lose a point guard gain a point guard.
But like HVL's on a okay contract.
Um it is one of these things where like she's been good.
Like Hayley Van Lith has been good.
And Jantel Lavender Eepkins has been awful. Jantel Lavender Eepkins is making more money than HVL.
Like HVL is averaging eight points per game on the season.
And I think she's been pretty good.
Like she's not been an all-star or anything, but she's been good.
I get it, the Sun are trying to lose.
HVL's not going to win you games.
Neither is Jantel Lavender Eepkins, by the way.
HVL's not going to win you games.
HVL's a perfect tank tank commander.
She started a decent chunk of the year.
I understand, obviously, the better of the two players is Lecaon.
Like Marine Johannes is incredible.
Like she is of all like there's so many good young French guards, like Carla Leace, um Fotu, who's currently injured, but who's currently coming back from an ACL injury, but she'll be playing for the Liberty next year, um Pauline Astier, um like there's a lot of good young French guards. There are.
But Lecaon's the best of them by a lot, to be real.
Lecaon is the best by a lot. But like to say wave anyone to say they actually have to wave somebody, they're going to have to wave somebody, but I just thought it would be Eepkins.
Eepkins has barely looked like a WNBA player.
Like I'm getting Van Lith on a good salary.
Who's going to sign HBL? Merc, Phoenix, go sign her.
Go sign her. You need someone to dribble past the halfway line. Go sign her.
Um I'm being very serious here.
There's no reason for the Phoenix Mercury not to sign Haley Van Lith.
Um like who who are who would the Mercury have to cut?
Like even the Toronto Tempo, you're like maybe you go sign HBL.
But you look at the roster for the Mercury.
He might have to bring her on a dev deal.
You know she's on a Yeah, she's on a protected deal.
I'm like they really need a point guard.
They really really need a point guard.
Why is Sandy Brondello player picture for a coach? I heard Sylvia Fowles is the same actually. But um So who's who are the 12?
So who's on the dev deal?
Um Suárez is on a dev contract.
Shey Peddy, I'm guessing is on a dev contract. So Chey Carter or Chey Carter or whatever is um like is she on a full contract?
Is she on the full contract?
Has she played all this year?
She's hardly played.
Like Phoenix do need a backup point guard. Kia Nurse Williams isn't really a point guard.
So I think this isn't a bad shout for her to go there.
But like she probably doesn't suit the way the Phoenix Mercury want to play.
But she doesn't shoot the three ball that well.
But like even on the year, I think HBL's HBL's been in the closing lineup in multiple games.
Like she had 12 points and basically hit a hit what should have been a game winner against Portland. And Sarah Ashley Barker just came up clutch.
Um she's one of their better players.
Way better than Shey Peddy. Rivers.
I'll give you that and I understand why you keep Sydney Rivers.
Um Like I genuinely uh understand when it comes to like why you would not um like why you wouldn't be in this position.
But um yeah, it is it's one of those things where um you've now we have now got a player in HVL who's very decent.
The re-dedicated tank job. Like Nneka Ogwumike has been terrible. Not surprised given Layshia Clarendon is back.
I don't get like you have Layshia Clarendon Walker but I I don't know. No, she wasn't better than Layshia Clarendon Walker. She was not better than Layshia Clarendon Walker.
Again, defense is good but she was their most efficient player. She was like HVL was good.
She was really, really good. And this is the crazy thing is that the only positive thing is like I think most teams if you if you need a point guard, I sign HVL. I'd have no issue with it.
Like she did it on nearly 50% of the field, nearly 50% of three.
And there's not that many guards we have. She'd be she'd start point guard for Washington. I'll tell you that much.
She'd start point guard for Washington.
Like [ __ ] cut Georgia Amore and bring in HVL.
HVL is a lot better than Georgia Amore.
I'll say that for sure.
Um Would she fit in Portland?
No, I really like Alisha Clark.
I really, really like Alisha Clark as a backup and she's not as good as Karlie Samuelson. Um Tell me who's bad.
Who's bad?
That you're like, okay who could sign HVL because I'm going to assume after getting eight points on ridiculous efficiency you're probably going to be signed somewhere.
Do Minnesota?
They run their double points.
[ __ ] it, Minnesota might be a spot.
Cuz like they have their double points and that's it.
Like they they don't have that backup point guard off the bench if both of them are off the floor.
Like I've seen them I've seen Andia Coffee taking up the ball.
And like they've just cut Holmes over.
So maybe?
Maybe Minnesota might be a move cuz obviously Emma Chekova's out injured.
Um Hough, they cut Hough.
So that they could bring in um what's her name?
They cut Hough so that they could bring in um Jeez, I'm blanking on her name.
Tyra McCowan.
And then they I've seen Dolson play point guard and she's not a point guard. So I'm like maybe Minnesota?
Just as like a an option there.
New York? Nah, especially when Sab is back they don't need her even though Rebecca Gardner is currently playing point. LA Sparks?
With Wheeler there?
Sparks might sign a short-term.
They might Oh, they need the they don't have the money to sign a short-term really.
They're probably not going to cut anyone for Tempo, no. Chicago, no.
Seattle?
Mhm, >> [cough and clears throat] >> Seattle.
I think they got too many bucket getters and that's kind of what she does.
But um Atlanta maybe?
Like I actually [laughter] I think there are teams that you look at and you're like H B L as an 11th or 12th man does make your team better. So I assume she's going to be signed. I think she was really good.
I think she played really well.
And the choice was they weren't going to cut Reagan and Beers. I just assumed they were going to cut Jaelene Hinkle.
Um This does not make any sense here. Did you watch she's been very good this year.
That being said She'll probably land on her feet. She played well enough that she'll probably land on her feet. Um they obviously chose to keep Hinkle over her.
Um I don't see it to be honest, but sure look, that was their choice to make.
Anyway, see you guys.
