THE RIVER AND THE COFFEE MUG: Why Jocko Willink's Philosophy Cannot Be Stoic

[00:00:30]>> In working on this series, I came across this black ceramic coffee mug. You even know the type. White lettering. It had three words. Discipline equals freedom.

[00:00:41]The phrase is the title of a bestselling book. It's the brand name of a supplement company. And it's the slogan of a podcast that has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times.

[00:00:52]And the man who created all of this, I'm not joking when I say his name, Jaco Willink, retired Navy Seal commander, author of Extreme Ownership. He wakes up every morning at 4:30 a.m. He posts a photo of his watch on Twitter. As he does this, he takes a cold shower. He has an erection as big as his brow ridge. And if you've never seen him, picture him now. And the miracle is, whatever you thought of, you're wrong.

[00:01:20]But when you see it, you'll realize you were somehow right. Here he is with our friend Ryan Daily Stoic. They're buddies. So that's great.

[00:01:33][snorts and sighs] His mug makes a philosophical claim and it's the mug I'm going to focus on because he presents this stuff as a fixed eternal truth. All stoicism that the truth is durable. The truth is the same every day in every situation for every person. You can stamp it on a mug because mugs require principles that don't [ __ ] change. Just like guys named Joo. A principles the discipline.

[00:01:58]Discipline produces freedom. Equation is constant. Wake up at 4:30, take a cold shower, stay hard, and repeat forever and ever and ever. Repetition is the discipline. Discipline is the freedom.

[00:02:12]Freedom is what the repetition produces.

[00:02:16]If we were to go back a little bit though, I mean before really the Stoics, let's 6th centuryish BC, you might find yourself on the bank of a river in Aphysis, Eonia, uh that's a western coast of what's now called Turkey.

[00:02:31][snorts] There'd be this guy standing there maybe staring at the water. He'd be wealthy, aristocratic, deliberately eccentric, probably clinically depressed by our standards today. and his name would be Heracitis.

[00:02:45]He will write a book called On Nature, of which roughly 130 fragments of it still survive to this day. This book won't be a system. It's not quite there yet. It'll be aphoristic, deliberately obscure, and almost delic.

[00:03:04]Heracitus will be called the dark one by later Greeks and he's probably the most important prescratic philosopher for the Stoics who existed two to three centuries and more after his death. The fragment most people know is the river fragment. It's a famous line. Uh it goes something like on those who step into the same rivers different and different waters flow. It's awkward in its writing. I mean it's ancient Greek. What do you expect? But the popular version kind of gets it across. You can't step in the same river twice. We all know this. We've seen this version before.

[00:03:40]It's the philosophical core of everything he did. Heracitis made a metaphysical claim. Reality is a process. What appears stable is in fact constant transformation.

[00:03:55]The river is not the river that was there a moment ago. You are not the you that was there. a moment ago. That mug is not the mug that was there a moment ago. Everything flows.

[00:04:11]Maybe a a better way to say it, as I've taken to lately, is that there never was a same river for you to step into once.

[00:04:20]This is the substrate that the Stoics built on. They rejected the counterpart perminities this rival prescratic option who taught that change is an illusion and being is permanent and undifferentiated.

[00:04:34]The stoics picked Heracitis because the Stoa was ultimately a philosophy of process of attention to flux of accuracy to actual contingent situations in front of you. And there's no such thing as the same situation happening twice.

[00:04:53]But think of that mug again. I found it fascinating. The slogan doesn't survive heritian substrate at all. Discipline equals freedom is presented as a fixed equation. Heracletus would have asked which discipline whose discipline on what day of the week performed by which body? In what state? In what temperature? What the [ __ ] are you talking about? A cold shower at 4:30 a.m. is not going to be the same cold shower that it was yesterday. That's not possible. The body taking it is different. Water is different. Mind is different. Temperature gradients are different. Everything is different. The mind is different. Freedom produced, if any, there's not is different. The equation can't be stamped onto a mug because no instance of the equation is the same instance. The mug is a sign of a JCO level understanding so basic that it's invisible like it would be to anyone who drinks from that mug for the rest of their [ __ ] lives.

[00:05:56]Joo's discipline is real. I'm I'll say that clearly. He's [ __ ] nuts. The man wakes up at 4:30. The cold plunge he takes is genuine. His training is genuine. The corruption, it's not in the discipline itself. [snorts] The corruption is what the discipline is for, what it means, what he thinks it does.

[00:06:21]Joo sells discipline as the maintenance of an unchanging self against a world that is always changing.

[00:06:30]To him, a self is a fixed point. This world threatens to deform it. Discipline is the practice of holding the self steady while the world tries to bend it.

[00:06:40]Stay hard.

[00:06:43]I know I'm not that mature. Sorry. The phrase makes sense in his metaphysics.

[00:06:48]It's not necessarily sexual. It is hardness is the resistance to deformation. Sometimes the self that has refused to be changed by what arrives has stayed hard. Now the actual stoic discipline descending from heracitian substrate is the cultivation of attention to a self that is itself changing in a world that is itself changing. The discipline is not maintenance. Discipline is responsiveness.

[00:07:18]No one would ever say a person is wise if they've never changed.

[00:07:23]A wise person is a person we see respond to things accurately calibrated to the actual situation. A situation that is itself never repeating which means the response can't be stamped onto a [ __ ] mug. Marcus Aurelius he wrote about the river constantly.

[00:07:43]Great passage for meditations. The universe is change. Our life is what our thoughts make it. Time is a sort of river of passing events. Strong is its current. Observe the movement of the stars as if you were running their courses with them.

[00:08:01]God, I love that [ __ ] Stoics could write. Meditations is structured by recognition that nothing ever returns.

[00:08:08]The exercise for a stoic must be performed today because today is not yesterday, tomorrow is not today. The fact that yesterday's exercise was performed has no purchase on anything that happens today. Tomorrow you can't put off because tomorrow's not today.

[00:08:27]You begin again this morning in this moment. You begin again every morning because this morning, this moment is new. You are new. Because the work begins again because this situation has begun again. It's always new. This is what the mug can't say.

[00:08:45]A mug requires a proposition that can be repeated. The mug's economic function is to be looked at every day on the shelf and produce the same impression every day. A philosophy of process can't be sold on a mug because a mug requires invariance in how it's manufactured.

[00:09:03]I've really, really looked up ways to do cool, clever mugs. That [ __ ] doesn't exist in the temperature. It's just not possible. It's stoic philosophy, my philosophy, all these good philosophies deny invariance.

[00:09:15]The mug is the sign that a philosophy has been replaced by fixed principle ideologies that a mug can house.

[00:09:24]When a contemporary figure sells you fixed principle as eternal wisdom, you're encountering this perminian translation of philosophy, not stoicism, not the Heracyian substrate that the Stoics built on. The test is whether the principle survives transcription onto an object designed for repetition.

[00:09:46]If the principle works on a mug, it's not a stoic principle. If the principal requires a mug to keep reminding you of it, well, and you haven't learned anything, the practice hasn't been transmitted. It's just a [ __ ] slogan.

[00:10:00]It's branding.

[00:10:02][clears throat] The river fragment cannot be put on a mug because the mug would be lying about the river the moment it was poured into.

[00:10:12]So, let me instead try to deliver what Joo has been selling around. Not because I demand that you always keep listening to me because practice done right does not need me. You need to know that you are whoever you are about to do something difficult. Maybe it's a cold shower at 4:30 a.m. I'd find that difficult. Maybe it's a hard conversation with a loved one or a boss or a co-orker, a piece of work that's been sitting on your desk for a week.

[00:10:44]Hold this situation in your mind.

[00:10:47]Jaco would come out of nowhere to tell you to apply discipline. This discipline would be the same discipline as yesterday. Principle of invariance. Stay hard. Repetition is strength. So you wake up at 4:30, you do the thing, and you do it again tomorrow.

[00:11:06]Heracitis would tell you something different that I think is more useful, but also wonderfully uncomfortable.

[00:11:14]That thing you're choosing that is in front of you is not this thing that was in front of you a moment ago or yesterday or the day before.

[00:11:23]The you that is talking about it, that is thinking about it, is not the you who saw it yesterday or considered it. The fatigue you carry is a different fatigue. The motivation has different texture and taste. Your body has a different state. This afternoon ahead of you contains different obligations and different people, even if they seem like they're the same. The work calibrated today is not identical to the work calibrated yesterday.

[00:11:51]This means the discipline is not the repetition. The discipline is about responsiveness. A cultivated attention to the state of this body in this situation, producing the response actually called for by the [ __ ] that's really happening. Some days that might just be a cold shower at 4:30 in the morning. Not for me. Good for you, Jo.

[00:12:17]Other days it definitely would be the wrong response no matter who you [ __ ] are. Because what your body might need is actually a nice warm bath. Maybe a [ __ ] rest. Maybe your testicles don't want to shrink again. The discipline of yesterday's principle is now blocking the discipline of today's perception.

[00:12:33]Don't do that. The maintenance of an unchanging self against a changing world is defensive, cowardly, scared. The stoic practice is the opposite. It goes out and it meets what is what is actually arriving.

[00:12:51]There's a weird irony that Jono's entire brand, like he's selling all this experience in the Navy Seals for 20 years, all this [ __ ] repeating the same things over and over. We did it over and over. That's what we did in the core.

[00:13:04]Blah blah blah. That's what they do in the SEALs after all.

[00:13:08]But that's what anyone [ __ ] does when they want to learn to do a thing. The seals aren't that special. Great musicians repeat chords a billion [ __ ] times. The seals are like anything else. They and also the seals don't want someone who can only repeat [ __ ] It's weird how he's [ __ ] turned it all around. They The reason that they repeat that [ __ ] is so they'll have the skill to respond to whatever may be in front of them in a lot of different situations that they can't repeat. Don't don't confuse preparation for the life you're meant to be [ __ ] living like Jaco does because the repetition was never the [ __ ] point. A seal doesn't practice kicking in doors, right? They kick in at 10,000 doors. They do that so that way when they're out and an actual door has arrived with a real hinge, real wood, and an unknown on the other side, the body reacts in a way that can respond to what is actually there.

[00:14:11]A musician who runs the same scale a million times is not becoming a scale repeating machine.

[00:14:19]What they're doing through that is they're building the capacity to hear what phrases are actually needed when in the real world when performing with other musicians.

[00:14:28]The discipline of practice is a construction of a repertoire wide enough and deep enough that the contingent changing situation in front of you can find its answer with you rather than imposing last Tuesday's answer on whatever is happening today.

[00:14:49]Joo has confused discipline with life.

[00:14:54]And as he states it, it's a wall you put up against the world. [ __ ] me. Is there anything less stoic? It should be a vocabulary that you build so the world can speak to you in full sentences.

[00:15:08]And just like nobody would expect me to be able to like hold my breath underwater while in enemy territory, you should realize maybe a guy named Joo, who probably hasn't read any of this [ __ ] certainly not twice, and repeated reading these books over and over, he's never repeated this work. He's never done the same passage over and over and over until his eyes bled and he knew it without asking. It's a It's weird that that guy can't tell you a single thing worth hearing about discipline.

[00:15:41]I mean, he can he and his company that sells such a thing to corporations who have lots of money. He and his friends can tell you all about leadership, which is kind of weird given that he basically obeyed orders for 20 [ __ ] years.

[00:15:55]There's a stunning lack of cohesion with everything he claims. His name's [ __ ] Joo. Shocking. But I'm not the target market. That would be State Farm like a real seal.

[00:16:08]So instead, maybe forget Joo and his perversion of stoicism. Also this guy, [ __ ] Try the alternative. Tomorrow morning before performing any routine you have, examine things. What is my body's actual state? What is the day actually contained? What response is calibrated to that? Not to the principle. Sometimes the answer will be your routine. Great.

[00:16:35]Sometimes the answer will be a different routine. Sometimes it will be no routine at all. Discipline here is actually the examination.

[00:16:44]The result is not the discipline.

[00:16:48]And if you take a look at what this gives you, the same kind of work performed every morning on whatever is actually arrived. the contingent real thing that's coming at you, not what you keep expecting and have talked to yourself up in your head.

[00:17:03]You don't need new principles every day.

[00:17:05]You don't need new podcasts. There's no upgrade, no fresh content. The river is just in front of you again. You can step in it. Go do that. The work has the same shape because the structure of stepping in it hasn't changed in 2500 [ __ ] years.

[00:17:22]And in that 2500 years, you've been able to read most of this. You can read Heracitis's fragment in any decent translation in any public library probably in the [ __ ] world. Khan's commentary, I like it. It's in print.

[00:17:35]It's been since 1979. Long's essay on Heracitis and Stoicism, it's in Stoic Studies. You can find that. It's in print since like 1996. I have copies behind me if you ever want to see what it looks like. Uh Marcus' flux passages.

[00:17:50]I read a little bit from it. 43, 23, 19, all that fun stuff. It's in any edition of meditations. You should read the whole [ __ ] thing. You don't need this essay to be repeated, though. You do not need really the next [ __ ] essay. You do not need a coffee mug. I know I sell one. It's great. You don't need a podcast or a 4:30 [ __ ] alarm to remind you of what is in front of you.

[00:18:11]What is in front of you is the stuff that's in front of you. The river's a river. The work is to step in it today, knowing today is not yesterday, and that tomorrow you will step in it again, knowing that no two steps will ever be the same. If you can do that, the mug becomes [ __ ] embarrassing.

[00:18:33]And that, well, that's the good news.

[00:18:35]It's a sign the practice has actually been [ __ ] transmitted.
