Those bright companions are sun dogs or parhelia created when hexagonal ice crystals in high clouds bend sunlight at a specific angle. The side spots usually appear about 22° left and right of the real sun and can glow with reddish inner edges. They look like a glitch in reality, but they are really a clean geometric trick performed by airborne ice.
