Marie Maitland (c. 1548-1586) was a Scottish noblewoman who became her blind father's secretary and created the Maitland Quarto manuscript, containing approximately 33 anonymous poems, three of which are explicit lesbian love poems. Her poetry from the 1500s represents among the earliest known Sapphic verse in any European language since ancient Greece, making her a remarkable figure in both Scottish history and LGBT history.
