And most people would rather protect the mask than face the mirror because masks are socially rewarded. Mirrors are psychologically dangerous. After enough disappointment, something inside you becomes quieter, not colder, more precise. You stop expecting emotional depth from people who survive through superficiality.

It costs self-respect. It costs inner peace. Most people pay that price forever because the fear of standing alone feels unbearable. But there is something even more unbearable than loneliness. becoming a stranger to yourself just to remain accepted by others.
